NY Post: Jericho Sims signing three-year deal with Knicks

From Zach Braziller:

An afterthought at this time last year, Jericho Sims now has a home with the Knicks.

The 58th pick in last year’s draft is signing a partially guaranteed three-year deal worth just shy of $6 million with the franchise after being on a two-way contract, The Post has confirmed.

The former Texas star appeared in 41 games last year and averaged 2.2 points and 4.1 rebounds. His playing time increased in the second half of the season, and the 6-foot-10 big man registered four double-digit rebounding games.

It’s uncertain if the Knicks will use part of their room mid-level exception for this deal. There is also the chance they could free up space if they work out a sign-and-trade with the Mavericks to land Jalen Brunson, who has agreed to a four-year, $104 million contract.

I’m a bit confused. Do the Knicks really not have enough cap room before using the room to give Sims less than $2 million a year? That seems hard to believe. In any event, this was a nice, low-cost signing that gives the Knicks some injury security in case Mitchell Robinson gets hurt (which is obviously not something that would shock you if it occurred). I was thrilled to see Sims develop late in the season when given a chance to play. I was okay with him being Mitch’s main backup this year, but hopefully he’ll still play a bit as the third-string center.

This is one of those moves that would be a good idea no matter what direction the Knicks were going in, so it’s nice to see.

Begley with several sign-and-trade options with the Mavs, including this one that keeps us over the cap:

If the Knicks acquire Brunson while remaining over the cap, they could exceed the cap to sign Robinson and could sign Hartenstein with part of the non-tax payer mid-level exception. In this scenario, they would have the remainder of the exception (roughly $2.7 million) and the bi-annual exception ($4.1 million) to use on other players. They could fit Sims’ deal into the non-tax payer mid-level exception. In this scenario, they’d be able to keep the $9.2 million trade exception they created in the Kemba Walker move. This scenario would likely involve a third team like Detroit getting involved. The Knicks would need to send out roughly $19 million in a sign-and-trade scenario if they are operating as a team over the cap. The easiest way to do this is to include the Pistons, who could acquire Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel as part of a three-team sign and trade. This would give the Knicks access to the Walker trade exception and the exceptions mentioned above. To entice Detroit, maybe Dallas would send a future pick to Detroit. (Remember, in this scenario, Dallas would receive a trade exception worth roughly $12 million.)

**If the Knicks or Pistons announce the Noel/Burks trade before the Knicks announce the Brunson signing, then this three-team option is off the table.

The Knicks and Mavericks could also engage in a two-team sign-and-trade, but it seems unlikely. In this scenario, the Knicks would have to send out a minimum of roughly $19 million. This would be expensive for the Mavs, who are already a tax team. In this instance, Dallas would also have to send the Knicks at least $3 million in salaries, which the club could absorb via the Walker trade exception. This deal, again, seems unlikely because of the salary implications for Dallas…

thanks bc, really nice write-up…

so many great films…can’t even really single one out, okay, maybe i can – el dorado, no, killer elite, yeah no – rollerball…you can just go on and on with his work…

Nice job, Brian! RIP James Caan.

I always rather liked Rollerball and thought it was a bit of an underrated film. I haven’t watched it in a long time, though, so maybe it hasn’t aged well. “Goal scored by number six, Jonathan E…”

Nice extension for Sims.

Less exciting squad heading into Summer League now that Obi and IQ have graduated and we have no first round pick. That said, am hoping Grimes looks too good for Vegas, and with Deuce, Sims, Keels, and Montero, we at least have some interesting guys whom we likely won’t see much during the actual season.

Great piece on Caan, Brian. I liked Misery a lot, back when horror movies was a thing. RIP James Caan!

Without waiving Taj, we cleared 32.1M in cap space. Brunson and Hart, with increasing contracts, come at 31.9M.

Any news on if Rokas is joining the Summer league squad?

No, he isn’t coming. Donatas Urbonas, a european journalist from BasketNews.com confirmed it last week.

Rokas will not play in summer league. I’ve forgotten if they said why when they announced this.

I liked Misery a lot, back when horror movies was a thing.

If you ever want to ease back into the genre with a gentle thrill, try Hereditary. Don’t look up anything about it. Just watch it and get back to me.

Co Sign Jowles such a memorable experience. Go in completely blind to it.

i was just talking with someone today reference the mini-series “The Stand”, how incredible it was when it first appeared, but – like a lot of stuff, didn’t age that well…when i first heard don’t fear the reaper playing towards the beginning of the show it gave me goose bumps…

it’s difficult for certain genres to age well, sci-fi and horror being two of the more challenging, so it seems…

recently watched THX 1138, have always been curious about the movie, i thought it held up well..

howdy z-man, been wondering how you were doing reference leveling up to retirement…

i think you mentioned you were still active though…

the last several years it’s been on my mind a bunch what would daily life be like without the time devoted to work…

it’s amazing, i’m going back in mid-August, but, since i started getting my shit together back in may, wow, so much effort that can be placed back in to your life, or, your family life, your home, health…

i imagine it might take you a while to adjust, curious though to hear what you think of it…

As long as we haven’t officially traded Kemba yet, we can stay over the cap.

There might be some other clever maneuvers Aller can pull out, but I’m pretty sure the Kemba trade is the linchpin.

We officially traded Kemba, EB. Trade was announced yesterday. Pistons needed to sign Duren so he could play for them in summer league.

@alan, yeah that’s what I was saying in the last thread. But the math just isn’t adding up for us to be over the cap like Begley says we can be. So that’s what’s throwing me off.

Maybe I messed up, but I’m not seeing it right now.

Yeah I’m not seeing many paths to the Knicks staying above the cap at this point. If there’s an S&T, I think it’ll be into our space and we’ll either dump someone we don’t want very much on Dallas or extract a small asset for the favor to them if they get a TPE.

FWIW, I still very much see a role for Fournier on this team if the goal is to “compete” next year. Macri’s newsletter today got me excited for the possibility of Hartenstein getting him good looks from three, and I bet we’d be able to get a couple of seconds for him at the deadline if we feel compelled to dump him. So if we’re going the salary dump route, I hope it’s Randle for many, many reasons.

I think Fournier, despite his contract, is a tradeable asset, many teams will talk themselves into a 40% 3 point shooter for thr right price. My worry is still Randle because I truly have no idea what to do with him. The risk of him having a terrible first half of the season and becoming truly untradeable is real, and the opportunity cost if that happens is high, but at the same time I don’t see an easy, realistic way to just dump him now, nor do I think Rose wants to do it.

I honestly don’t expect any more moves this off-season and I’m ok with it, but I’ll be scared if Randle starts the season poorly and starts to pout.

Closing the deal with Detroit and Dallas to sign Brunson isn’t complete which suggests they are working on a sign and trade. But I can’t figure out what we are going to get back and, honestly, think the sign and trade may just not happen.

Thanks as always for ghe kind thoughts and words, geo. It’s still pretty surreal, I’ve been overwhelmed and busy enough to just put off thinking about after Sept 1 when things become official. I’ve been shredding a bunch of my files to make way for my AP who will be taking over, and each thing I put into the shredder has memories attached to it. Its truly bittersweet and disorienting.

If you want to know more about what I’m leaving behind, you can look up The Computer School. I’ve been blessed with the greatest gig a middle school educator could ever want…great school, great location, great colleagues, great mix of kids and families. I truly owe so much to so many. It’s nice to leave with a strong sense that I’ve been part of a continuum, that I was handed a brilliantly established progressive school community by my predecessors and can now pass the torch to my AP who is a much more gifted educator and person with far fewer flaws.

I truly appreciate that in the midst of personal struggles you show such genuine, heartfelt concern for folks that you only know through the lens of this blog. You are the ballast that keeps things real around here. Please know that your willingness to share your struggles resonates with many of us and adds a priceless dimension to the conversation here. We have your back, bro!

wow, what a legacy to be a part of, i mean, many of us are fortunate to establish and build a “legacy” through our family, to also do so with an institution that plays such a meaningful role in the lives of so many is really extraordinary…

i liked the stories from 2018, that’s special to be ready for a moment like that and really seize that opportunity to make a statement, or more aptly – show others a better way forward…

i can’t wait to check in on sept 1 2023 z-man…most certainly not wasted effort in your profession, i am excited though to hear about your time beyond your work…the small, but super important, things that you’ll have the opportunity for…

30 years is a good bit of your life…i wonder how long it might take for you to begin to unwind…

i wish i had something to share so you might get an idea of my appearance – having seen your photo now, beware sir, should we meet be in store for a big ‘ol hug 🙂

I learned about Z-Man before KB from this article and remember my discussion with my colleagues that that man had huge cajones.

Z-Man, you will have ample choices for your next step. Certainly, mentoring young principals* is one, if David Banks is wise. Be sure to take some time for yourself to recharge and savor what you have accomplished.
* Having worked in the DoE and the private sector allows me to understand that being an NYC DoE principal is one of the most stressful and difficult leadership jobs. Serving three constituencies is quite difficult.

Z-man Congrats on what the next phase of your life brings! You’re a real one!

Thanks Jowles, will do. 😉

Son just finished up his journey through the NYC public schools. ElRo by way of PS87 and Booker T Middle School. Thanks for your service, Z-Man and good luck in your next chapter.

Z-Man, looks like you did much much more than mission accomplished, you should be very proud of your career. 🙂 And best of luck on the next step you choose to take. 😉

Congrats again, Z-man

And E, is PS 87 the one between 77th and 78th streets nearAmsterdam? I did go there for a year (a long time ago of course)

Thanks folks, this last year has been especially grueling, partly because the kids were off-kilter post pandemic and partly because of the counting the days thing. I didn’t have it nearly as hard as the teachers did, though, or my AP. I owe more to them than I can ever repay.

Anyway, what the heck is going on with the Brunson deal?!

I would guess that we have crossed paths on 77th many times! All very highly-regarded schools and ElRo is a great landing spot, especially given the uncertainty of the HS admissions process. Hope all continues to go well!

Today I learned:

1) Z-Man was almost my middle school principal

2) We agree on the important (read: non-Knicks related) stuff

E, that’s pretty similar to my path! Was 199 to Delta/BTW to Stuy.

“1) Z-Man was almost my middle school principal”

That would have been something!

2) We agree on the important (read: non-Knicks related) stuff

I sensed that, and appreciate it.* Your path through the NYCDOE gives you a unique window into those issues. Things are improving somewhat (imo, many would say the opposite, including some of my colleagues), but lots more to be done.

* I think we actually agree on most Knicks-related stuff too. On that note, I’ll concede that there’s no stronger indictment of the hybrid method than in the realm of school desegregation.
