Game Thread: New York Knicks vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

Maybe the Knicks will start a winning streak tonight!

For whatever reason, Fizdale says that while DSJ will continue to start, Mudiay will play significant minutes off of the bench in his return. Interesting. I suspect that they just feel bad for Mudiay clearly being on the outs with the organization in terms of their future plans.

Let’s go, Knicks! Go where? Hopefully not to a win, but go somewhere!

i don’t have any advanced stats on this, but, Rebecca Haarlow looks good tonight

I have to say that Kanter is showing up Porzingis. Kanter wanted out for a good reason — he wasn’t playing. He could have been pissed at the Knicks, but he had nothing but praise for the Knicks organization after he was traded. Porzingis, on thd other hand, doesn’t have a single good word for Knicks organization.

Porzingis, on the other hand, doesn’t have a single good word for Knicks organization.

it’s hard to not take that kind of stuff personal, until i realize i’m not actually part of the knicks organization…still – never a good practice to publicly bad mouth a previous employer…

I did a double take when I saw the starting lineup. Kornet and Jordan together, and Dotson also starting

i don’t have any advanced stats on this, but, Rebecca Haarlow looks good tonight

. It’s definitely a good eye test moment.

So um, we aint talking about Dotson out here starting the game off like en fuego Klay Thompson?

What a fun start to the game, Dotson is 5-5 with a 4 point play, absolutely unconscious. And that DSJ dunk was ferocious, beautiful to watch.

here’s a stat. Dotson’s 18 pts in the 1Q is the most first quarter points ever from a player that we aren’t going to be sure what the hell happened to him in 3 years. beating the prior record of 4, by Andy Rautins.

When I saw the line up, i actually thought “tanking?”. But Dotson is destroying the tank.

As my old grade school gym teacher used to say: “somebody ate their Wheaties this morning”.

Clyde saying Mudiay looks like he’s lost weight over 3 weeks is the equivalent of what my wife says when she’s trying to be nice.

Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!says:

Dotson is too good for this team. A defender that shoots 3s? He’s killing the tank. Trade him!

I think at this point I’m just talking to myself, but I legitimately did not realize Deng was still in the league

I liked Haarlow’s potential from the very beginning. You can go back into the threads and look it up.

Seems like.. I am quite jet lagged tonight

Knox seems to have sbosn some signs of coming out of his shooting slump

I think every time Knicks fans get excited and chant “Defense” the probability of the other team scoring goes up about 50%.

I think every time Knicks fans get excited and chant “Defense” the probability of the other team scoring goes up about 50%.

Seems accurate.

Mudiay was barely tolerable in this game, but not really when you see he only had 1 assist.

@ 31 at least from an offensive perspective I think Mitch really benefits from playing with Kadeem, they seem to have a lot of chemistry and it looked like there was no PG that played other than DSJ. Chalking that up to tank strategy.

Do the people defending Feinstein’s comments not understand scientists say we only have 11 years to address manmade climate change before it becomes irreversible or are they just such partisan sheep they’ll viscerally defend any milquetoast liberal politico no matter how inane their stance?

Unfortunately I think there are a lot of partisan sheep out there…we’re in a climate emergency.

@34

I mean, I understand why cynical self-serving politicians like Feinstein gaslight their own constituencies into accepting greater levels of exploitation. Her family’s made millions during her time in office and they’ll probably be protected upon whatever island, bunker, or satellite that’s been created for the top 1% by the time our oceans completely die off and flood the planet. But it’s the supposed liberals who support this grifter because of the D in front her name that really grind my gears. I can understand if you’re an anti-science climate denier because you’re actually stupid enough to believe the Trumpian line about manmade climate change being a Chinese hoax. But if you’re the type to pat yourself on the back for accepting the veracity of the expert scientific consensus then you have to know she’s actually telling grade school children that our civilization could very well collapse in their lifetimes from an accelerating environmental catastrophe. How do you defend this and actually look yourself in the mirror? I don’t get it. I really don’t.

What happened to Mitch?

I think it mostly came down to the Wolves doing their homework and playing lockdown defense. They did a good job isolating Mitch from entry passes and boxing him out from rebounds even when they were playing small. He was also on the receiving end of a couple suspect foul calls.

I mean, I understand why cynical self-serving politicians like Feinstein gaslight their own constituencies into accepting greater levels of exploitation.

If you jump straight to corruption as your explanation then you really don’t understand. One, she probably doesn’t really believe we’re facing a catastrophe. Most people who accept climate science don’t really believe it’s a catastrophe, don’t really understand the scale of what we’re facing. Two, the old guard like Feinstein still believe strongly in there being a center they need to play to and that center only being willing to accept small incremental steps. She thinks her job is making those people happy, and that’s how she’s kept her job so long.

It’s pretty easy to find young progressives/liberals/whatever who think pushing for the Green New Deal and similar policies will freak out Americans and lead directly to 4 more years of Trump. You don’t have to reach for corruption as a reason why someone like Feinstein wouldn’t support it. The job is to convince them to support it, not turn them into your enemy.

Feinstein’s opponent in her Senate race last year was another Democrat, Kevin DeLeon. We have a “jungle primary” here, so the top two vote-getters in the primary move onto the general election, and the Republican Party is so moribund in California they could not field a candidate who could finish top 2.

DeLeon ran as a progressive, ran to Feinstein’s left. He’s a solid Bernie Sanders-style progressive. I thought he might do well. He got creamed, lost by almost ten points. DeLeon just didn’t have the name recognition to compete with DiFi. So when you see her acting the way she did to those kids, just remember she gives zero fucks. She just won re-election last year by mercilessly crushing a progressive opponent. She’ll be 91 when this term ends. She doesn’t even have to pretend to care about children or climate change or any of that. She can pretty much just run out the clock from here on out. She’s got her job at the Senate until she’s either dead or ancient.

Two, the old guard like Feinstein still believe strongly in there being a center they need to play to and that center only being willing to accept small incremental steps. She thinks her job is making those people happy, and that’s how she’s kept her job so long.

As you note, Pelosi plays to “the center” (a euphemism for her donors) because it’s in her political (and financial) benefit to make them happy. But the actual truth is that both she and this donor class of lobbyists are actually to the right of center of mainstream opinion on the issue since a majority on both sides of the aisle actually support a Green New Deal. In any truly representative democracy a politician of her rank would be tripping over herself to support this initiative because of its widespread bipartisan support. But this is America, the New York Knicks version of a developed nation, and we can’t have nice things here either because our executive level managers are also incentivized to pander to whatever narrow-minded and self-serving oligarch pays their check. Noam Chomsky actually has a brilliant description for the entire dynamic called “institutional stupidity.” Seemingly rational people like Pelosi end up promoting harmful long-term measures because the entire system rewards their selfish pursuit of short-term gains. She’s easy to figure out because it’s her own self-interest to side with the billionaire class that made her one of the richest politicians in the country and she ultimately knows all of this shit won’t hit the fan until after she’s long gone. What vexes me are the seemingly rational liberal supporters who understand the imminence of the looming catastrophe, liberal supporters who aren’t being bribed with millions of campaign cash, defending this shill of a political con-artist as she declares it impossible to save future generations from an uninhabitable planet.

Paul George throwing down a windmill dunk to tie the game with under three minutes to go in overtime is….well, it was pretty damn cool is what it was.

And then he wins the game with a floater in overtime! Man, the narrative is sure as fuck going to be helping George out come MVP time (he won’t win, but I bet he passes Harden, despite Harden having the better season).

@41

I never thought he had this type of a season in him but I like to think it’s karma rewarding him for not being a frontrunner, sticking with OKC and telling The LA Lebroners to fuck off.

JK47’s political analysis equal to his basketball chops.

Any person who thinks you can power a modern economy without nuclear power or natural gs has never spent a winter in Nee England. It’s a good goal setting exercise though and a great exercise in political public relations….

Paul George is the bomb.

He and Vonleh have both regressed. It’s good for the tank, but really painful to watch

Can’t believe I’m in the boat where im trying to convince myself that DSJ might be a player one day – damn you, Knicks! These are strange forms of torture…

That being said, I hope he becomes one. He’s got a lot of physical tools, but a lot of stuff to fix. I hope they get him working with a serious pg coach in the off-season. But at least now they can give up on the Mudiay Project.

When it comes to environmental policy, there’s only one question people need to answer: How many climate change predictions in the last 30 years were accurate and how many were wildly off-base? If you don’t know the answer, don’t embarrass yourself by pretending you either understand or care about science.

Mike

Luke Kornet’s game log showing a harsh regression.

5-31 last three games.

Let’s be honest though, every player has cold streaks, especially 3pt shooters. I definitely expected this to happen and been dreading to find out where he actually stacks up.

There is idealism and realism.

My experience is that as you get older you slowly realize that the idealism of your youth was actually a delusion that was incompatible with reality. Sometimes the way you see the world and the way you think it should logically work is not how the rest of the world sees it, thinks about it or would respond to what you think is a good idea. That doesn’t mean you should stop believing in a better world. It just means that the polices we implement should reflect reality instead the delusions of idealists (even I was one once).

Making the world a better place is a very slow process. It’s kind of like rebuilding through the draft. 🙂

It’s an interesting discussion for another forum. And not nearly as important as the state of Zion’s knee.

It just means that the polices we implement should reflect reality instead the delusions of idealists (even I was one once).

So… ignore the stats, go on gut?

So I guess we only have twelve years for the Knicks to win a championship in our lifetimes before the world comes to an end. Even more pressure to hit the lottery, get Zion, and sign at least Durant this offseason.

But does she believe that poll? Probably not. Even if she did, the poll is evidence that if she wants to achieve those goals she should separate herself from the name ‘green new deal’ and it’s backers: the policies have a better chance without them.

Just like in basketball! Speaking of which, let’s go Suns!

@49…I agree with you regarding the delusion of youth, which can be very powerful. I think of how many companies were started by people who just ignored all of the barriers and proceeded with reckless abandon. I believe (based on surveys) that most of the world’s population believes in climate change…I should say most of the developed world. There’s a big difference between the two.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_opinion_by_country

But it’s clearly complicated by all of the vested interests…How many industries, for example, are dependent on cheap oil and coal? A rhetorical question…It really touches every aspect of society, food, heating/cooling/construction/transportation etc…I think politicians respond to what will keep them in office and that is, to some degree, cheap goods…cheap gas, cheap milk and cheese, cheap beer, ~low heating and cooling costs. Imagine the outrage if these goods suddenly increased in price by 40%.

watching a little ufc, brazilian jiu jitsu guy against someone with a combat sambo background…so of course they’re mostly just standing –
punching and kicking each other…

for some reason it got me thinking about a fighter named ryan hall…another of the these grappling specialists who has this one unique “leg lock” technique that basically tears the opponents knee apart…his success rate is phenonemal…

needless to say the ufc has a challenge trying to match him up…i was wondering who on their roster other than maybe the champ khabib could stop that move, who would even want to take that chance…and then, I remembered – this is a basketball situation here…so, I started thinking about the knicks…

couple of games I’m looking forward to this weekend – one is the knicks are actually gonna get broadcast tomorrow on nbatv, that’s mighty generous of them, considering our situation…

i’m really curious to get a chance to see john jenkins play…it should be an interesting tell in to how our front office thinks, and, evaluates talent…

maybe this is his time to shine 🙂

So I guess we only have twelve years for the Knicks to win a championship in our lifetimes before the world comes to an end.

The world won’t come to an “end” in 12 years, but, y’know, hypothetically, if “climate change” is to be “believed,” you’re going to be real upset when you see where the tens, if not hundreds of millions of displaced Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, Bangladeshi, Indonesian, Thai, Phillipine, Malaysian, Brazilian, Taiwanese and Burman citizens emigrate to. As you’re likely an avowed Republican who believes in the GOP’s tacit support of white Judeochristian Anglo-American supremacy, I’m sure you can imagine what that’s going to do to the GOP’s precious Aryan population.

Of course, half of the mouthbreathers sharing memes on Facebook about how rising sea levels are fake? They’ll be dead in the next 12 years from cardiovascular disease and diabetes complications. So they won’t be around to help you dry your tears when America becomes the actual melting pot I’ve heard so much about. So I’ll be happy to drink them as I help those new American citizens find the social services building for their voter IDs.

You probably have a family that loves you very much. Be sure to make a video for them where you state that climate change is fake so they know what ol’ grandpa was like back when 99% of scientists urged change and one of our nation’s major political parties sat back and called them liars. I’m sure the video will age well.

Don’t worry, everyone — it’s all fake! This will never, ever happen. Fox News said so!

When it comes to environmental policy, there’s only one question people need to answer: How many climate change predictions in the last 30 years were accurate and how many were wildly off-base? If you don’t know the answer, don’t embarrass yourself by pretending you either understand or care about science.

Every year, the actual climate turns out to be worse than forecast. This is not because of bad science, but because of human events, like more economic progress in China than anticipated.

How long before we get to “herp a derp it snowed yesterday global warming is so fake hurr durr”

Fuck Ntilikilla for the divisive politics grenades you constantly throw into here. You’re like Eris throwing golden apples into the fray to watch the discord. If you don’t fuck off and find a political forum for your bullshit I’m literally going to burn plastic bags so I can personally offset all your carbon offsets.

My experience is that as you get older you slowly realize that the idealism of your youth was actually a delusion that was incompatible with reality.

Sorry you’ve grown old and lame. I’m not young anymore, was ever an idealist, and I still find this statement to be a sad cop-out.

And, more to the NBA, I think if I was a ref I’d have a semi-conscious bid against Harden. He has a terrible body language out there.

Ntilakilla might be a GRU troll on the “divide and conquer” platoon.

But seriously, stop bring up climate change here. It’s like every other post. We have occasional explosions of political posts because the country is being “run” by an openly-bigoted white supremacist with the attention span, vocabulary, work ethic and moral compass of a 1st-grader who’s grown entirely on a diet of Doritos, lead paint chips and leather-belt beatings, but you really encourage it more than most. Stop. Like 80% of this board agrees with you and the other 20% don’t give a fuck because Breitbart told them not to. Stop.

@61

Yup, that’s it. I won’t even get into the concept of what people perceive as “the reality” they discover when they grow older, but that’s just a cop-out. There’s plenty of people who have lived their lives according a set of ideals they hold dear, and still do so as they grow older. You might think you found out what “real life” is like, but you’ve found that about your own life, not about every other person’s experiences. That’s just a lame excuse to paint everything you say about anything as “the truth”.

You always have to make it personal with your assumptions of who I am and include some kind of derogatory insult. I was going along with the theory of the world coming to an end due to climate change and having a little fun connecting to the Knicks situation, but you can’t leave it at that. I never stated climate change is fake nor do I believe that. I assure you I do not identify with Aryans nor would they include me in their sphere.

You seem like a very smart guy but you suffer from the same problem a lot of smart people do, they’re not as smart as they think they are.

I apologize that I failed to sense that there was no implicit mockery of the direness of climate change in that joke, so long as you can re-read your post and see how I could have come to that conclusion.

I don’t apologize for what I said about the GOP or anyone who chooses to support their fascist agenda.

watching duke and syracuse now, but, the other game I’m really looking forward to watching this weekend is lakers at pelicans…

I’m guess that should be deservedly weird…I still think the pels are making the right move, but, I can also see some justification if they had chose differently…

Btw I forgot to mention this—

Donnie, throw your scale out! The number means very little. Body composition is far more important, and that’s not easy to measure. Definitely not happening by measuring health via pounds.

Barrett’s just a good basketball player. He provides plus value on the boards and as a passer, and he’s starting to understand he doesn’t have to throw up every shot (but watching this year’s Duke team I sorta understand why he felt that way).

I really wish Cam Reddish was already a 40% shooter from deep. That kid is an All NBA defender in a couple seasons.

The Rangers traded Zuccarello to Dallas for a couple of picks. The second is a third round pick in 2020, that turns into a first round 2020 pick if Zuccarello signs with Dallas this summer (he’s on the last year of his contract and is a free agent). The first pick is conditional as well, turning from a 2019 2nd rounder into a first if he plays enough and the Stars advance far enough into the playoffs.

Is this sort of thing even possible in the NBA? Could the Lakers conceivably do a ‘if Davis doesn’t resign with us that extra second reverts back to us’ kind of thing?

Man, when a tank competitor like the Bulls beats the Celtics, that’s just double the sweetness

LaVine looked like a man possessed tonight against a legit nba defense… maybe there’s hope for our scrubs??

Yeah, it was a very fun NBA night. Celtics and Lakers losing to inferior teams, Warriors and Grizzlies losing, Kings winning.

I believe so, yes. I don’t think the CBA restricts teams from putting strange conditions on picks if both teams agree to it. However, the fact that no one has ever actually done it does certainly give me pause about me being correct here. 🙂

Man, when a tank competitor like the Bulls

the bulls seemed to go off the tank track a while back when some of their young guys started getting healthy, their old coach turned in to a new coach, and, the new coach is a bit more like their old old coach…

then made that odd(?) trade for porter jr…seems like they’re doing something else these days…

the suns though – full tank ahead…

i don’t give the cavs too much worry or concern – i assume they’ll get the number one pick…if they don’t, I may feel like they got robbed…

Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!says:

Lessons from last night.

1. Houston – defense and play making is underrated.

2. Brooklyn – you have to give young players a chance to develop

3. Chicago – Dolan should have allowed Phil to trade KP for a good young player and draft pick and then drafted Markkanen with the pick like he was considering

His last eight:
30 PTS, 9 REB
30 PTS, 10 REB
31 PTS, 18 REB
20 PTS, 11 REB
20 PTS, 17 REB
21 PTS, 9 REB
25 PTS, 11 REB
35 PTS, 15 REB

This Bulls team is going to be a HANDFUL in the not so distant future. They’ve been hurt all year, but with the addition of Porter and the good young pieces they already have, they are turning the corner quickly. I’m very bullish on the Bulls.

It’s officially a 2 team tank race now.

I think we’re good. The worst and second worst records have the exact same odds at the top 4 picks. The only difference is being about 20% more likely to pick 5th rather that 6th.

Free Mitch. I want to see some 30 minute games the rest of the season.

The biggest issue is that this seems like a 2 or 3 player draft. It’s Zion way ahead of everyone, then Morant and Barrett, then everyone else. Guaranteeing the best possible odds for a top 3 pick is still very valuable in such a draft, the absolute worst case scenario would be dropping to 4th. I’m not a fan of Barrett and Morant has issues, but losing on even them to pick up whoever rises from the Culvert / Reddish / Langford etc group would be a disgrace.

I knew Kevin Love would help, but not this much. Phoenix needs to put some shit together. Hopefully some heroball from Devin Booker bails them out. Circle March 6th. Might be the only game either of the teams win for the rest of the season.

I’m a lot higher on Barrett now than I was a month ago, when it seemed like he was having 5-19’s on the regular. The bad start *could* have been an unfortunate case of having your worst stretch at the beginning. We’ll see. His numbers are improving and could end up being much better than I anticipated.

What would be fascinating is if he leads Duke to a title while Zion is out injured. Of course that shouldn’t impact anything but it would probably lead to some debate and could open up the door for a team with young bigs like Phoenix or Chicago to consider Barrett over Zion if they landed the top pick.

probability and statistics, while humbling (I had the joy of getting to take that wonderful and enlightening class twice), is not disgraceful…

we committed to tanking/”player development” and we have 11 wins for the effort…

the numbers are what they are…will “deserve” whatever pick we get…

looks like we may have missed on our last 2 first round picks…hopefully if we don’t get lucky with where we pick, we’ll get lucky with who we pick…

although to be honest, not sure I can ever recall putting the word luck and knicks together in the same sentence before…

Barrett is definitely coming around. His numbers are actually starting to look much better. Still overrated for a consensus top three pick I think.

Zion’s statistical dominance is pretty striking. He is indeed on his own tier. Call it the All-NBA tier.

Yeah, if Zion doesn’t play the tournament and Barrett is terrific, there will be a heavy debate about it. The Anthony Bennett comparisons will come back, people questioning whether Zion loves the game and all of that.

The Suns have the 8th easiest schedule remaining, (the Knicks are 13th), but they’re truly unbelievably bad and that doesn’t matter much when you can’t beat anyone. Ending up with the 2nd worst record is still fine tho, the real possible disaster, which would be the 4th or 5th worst record, is pretty much guaranteed to not happen.

Ending up with the 2nd worst record is still fine tho, the real possible disaster, which would be the 4th or 5th worst record, is pretty much guaranteed to not happen.

Yeah, we’re locked in pretty well. I’m not going to have to much problem rooting for some wins here and there. Aside from the fact that we’re horrible and won’t win anyway, of course. That’ll still be a problem.

Skip the post if you don’t wanna talk about it. I respect the thoughtful posts. If you love your kids you want the Maldives around, ya know? We can talk about it…. Best hot takes on the web about whatever.

Knicks can’t beat Wolves without Karl Townes. Or even get close. Just wow. Venezuela, anyone?

Well I don’t think their top priority was to beat the Wolves, otherwise they would have played Kadeem.

Skip the post if you don’t wanna talk about it. I respect the thoughtful posts. If you love your kids you want the Maldives around, ya know? We can talk about it…. Best hot takes on the web about whatever.

Yeah, “Diane Feinstein is a decrepit old wench”, “fuck amazon”, and “Republicans are fat, diabetic mouth breathers” were some really thoughtful posts. Totally up to the level of discourse we usually sustain here.

I can and do skip posts. But how many contributors from the silent majority of nonpartisan people do you want to drive away from the forum with the same inane bullshit that’s ruined countless vibrant forums?

But does she believe that poll? Probably not.

I can’t see into Senator Feinstein’s soul. (I mistakenly called her Pelosi because it was late and both are high ranking white female Democrats in Congress from Congress who raise lots of lobby cash). All I can do is make determinations based on the data and it says she is on the minority right of the issue. What I do know is that politicians will find few initiatives in Congress with so much overwhelming bipartisan support. Usually those policies are rather progressive like Medicare expansion, socialized public college education, reduction of foreign wars, etc. And yet politicians like Senator Feinstein always find reasons not to implement them despite belonging to a party that lost 1,000 seats – federal and state level – between 2009 and 2018.

Even if she did, the poll is evidence that if she wants to achieve those goals she should separate herself from the name ‘green new deal’ and it’s backers: the policies have a better chance without them.

The Green New Deal isn’t even really a set of prescribed policies – that part is still being negotiated. What separates the imitative isn’t the how but the when. It’s about meeting goals for the decarbonization of our economy according to the scientific timetable set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Those who support the GND want to meet those timetables, Feinstein doesn’t seem to believe that is a priority.

Rude. It was early Saturday morning and I find the interlocutors here far more intelligent than one finds in an echo-chamber political forum.

Yeah, “Diane Feinstein is a decrepit old wench”, “fuck amazon”, and “Republicans are fat, diabetic mouth breathers” were some really thoughtful posts. Totally up to the level of discourse we usually sustain here.

If that was your interpretation of my posts you’re not engaging with my arguments. And if you’re just strawmanning my argument then you’re being intellectually dishonest. Neither option is a sign of good faith discourse.

Venezuela, anyone?

I am no particular fan of Maduro’s policies but I find the entire ordeal to be one of the most naked instances of U.S. imperial intervention in the Latin America since the 2004 Haitian coup. The London Bank is actually freezing Venezuela’s international account with 1.2 billion dollars of its government’s own money while Bolton talks about sending millions of humanitarian aid. Total joke. All of it is a pretext to send in weapons to opposition forces within the country to overthrow the government.

YES! This the imperial “we know best” America. Its fucking disgusting

YES! This the imperial “we know best” America. Its fucking disgusting

It really is. Consider the hypocrisy of a country where the mainstream media has launched a two year probe into Russian collusion during its 2016 presidential election now working with Colombia to forcefully install an unknown, unelected puppet as Venezuela’s new head of government. It would be as if the Russians worked with Mexico to appoint Jill Stein as U.S. President. The only reason no one is in uproar about it here in the U.S. is because of imperial condescension to our own backyard.

Maduro is an incompetent buffoon, but anyone who believes Donald Trump, Elliot Abrams, and John Bolton have the best interests of the Venezuelan people in mind is dumber than Phil Jackson.

Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!says:

I hate to say it, but in business and economics trying to model human behavior doesn’t work very well either. That’s why most economists are lousy investors and typically don’t do a very good job of making predictions. They have high IQs and advanced degrees, but use broken models.

Going on gut isn’t the solution.

Understanding how the world actually works and how other people think helps.

Years ago a certain insurance company I was invested in was “cherry picking” customers in a certain state because it was very focused on profits. Well intentioned politicians decided to change the laws to make cherry picking like that illegal. They fully expected to help their constituency and make for a better insurance market. I laughed my ass off because I knew what would happen. I was right. The company simply left the state. They decided it was better to not do any business in that state than to lose money there. That left the former customers with worse insurance at a higher price and the state with even bigger bills for risky customers.

It’s not enough to want to help people and make the world a better place. You have to understand how people with different values and goals think and behave in the real world or you might make the world a worse place by accident. No easy solutions

Stratomatic "I'm tired of the Knicks paying lip service to DEFENSE. Get defenders & two-way players. Then play them!says:

The US government cares about one thing and only one thing in Venezuela.

The OIL!

US interests want to make sure US companies are getting a piece of the action in Venezuela instead of China or especially Russia. For that they have to install a US friendly leader to replace Maduro.

We still compete economically and politically with China and especially Russia. IMO, we’d be way better off working with them and creating stronger economic and business ties with them, but that’s another story. Instead, we allow the press, war mongers, and oil barons to turn them into feared boogie men so we can justify higher military spending, more wars, and more interference as having a moral motive when we just want the oil and money and don’t give a shit about the people.

To be clear, I think the people of Venezuela would be way better off if they rejected anything and everything even close to socialism, but it’s not our place to decide what’s best for other people.

IMO, the neocons with the president’s ear right now (and several other presidents before him) are among the worst human beings earth has ever produced.

These things are remarkably popular, when they are divorced from specific proposals and from specific politicians/parties. The ideas behind the GND are very popular, but if you refer to it as the GND that popularity drops fast on all sides. It’s one of the things folks like Feinstein have to deal with. The GND will not pass this Senate, no matter how popular it is. Just because we really need to do these things does not mean it’s possible to do these things. Maybe in two years, if we are extremely lucky.

This isn’t a defense of Feinstein per se, but just like we need people and politicians pulling us towards the right path, we need folks who are focused on practicalities of what’s actually possible given the strange and dysfunctional nature of US politics.
