For whatever reason, Fizdale says that while DSJ will continue to start, Mudiay will play significant minutes off of the bench in his return. Interesting. I suspect that they just feel bad for Mudiay clearly being on the outs with the organization in terms of their future plans.

He could have been pissed at the Knicks, but he had nothing but praise for the Knicks organization after he was traded. Porzingis, on thd other hand, doesn’t have a single good word for Knicks organization.

I mean, I understand why cynical self-serving politicians like Feinstein gaslight their own constituencies into accepting greater levels of exploitation. Her family’s made millions during her time in office and they’ll probably be protected upon whatever island, bunker, or satellite that’s been created for the top 1% by the time our oceans completely die off and flood the planet. But it’s the supposed liberals who support this grifter because of the D in front her name that really grind my gears. I can understand if you’re an anti-science climate denier because you’re actually stupid enough to believe the Trumpian line about manmade climate change being a Chinese hoax. I think it mostly came down to the Wolves doing their homework and playing lockdown defense. They did a good job isolating Mitch from entry passes and boxing him out from rebounds even when they were playing small. He was also on the receiving end of a couple suspect foul calls.
If you jump straight to corruption as your explanation then you really don’t understand. One, she probably doesn’t really believe we’re facing a catastrophe. Most people who accept climate science don’t really believe it’s a catastrophe, don’t really understand the scale of what we’re facing. Two, the old guard like Feinstein still believe strongly in there being a center they need to play to and that center only being willing to accept small incremental steps. She thinks her job is making those people happy, and that’s how she’s kept her job so long.
It’s pretty easy to find young progressives/liberals/whatever who think pushing for the Green New Deal and similar policies will freak out Americans and lead directly to 4 more years of Trump. You don’t have to reach for corruption as a reason why someone like Feinstein wouldn’t support it. The job is to convince them to support it, not turn them into your enemy.
Feinstein’s opponent in her Senate race last year was another Democrat, Kevin DeLeon. We have a “jungle primary” here, so the top two vote-getters in the primary move onto the general election, and the Republican Party is so moribund in California they could not field a candidate who could finish top 2.
DeLeon ran as a progressive, ran to Feinstein’s left. He’s a solid Bernie Sanders-style progressive. I thought he might do well. He got creamed, lost by almost ten points. DeLeon just didn’t have the name recognition to compete with DiFi. So when you see her acting the way she did to those kids, just remember she gives zero fucks. She just won re-election last year by mercilessly crushing a progressive opponent. She’ll be 91 when this term ends. She doesn’t even have to pretend to care about children or climate change or any of that. She can pretty much just run out the clock from here on out. She’s got her job at the Senate until she’s either dead or ancient.
As you note, Pelosi plays to “the center” (a euphemism for her donors) because it’s in her political (and financial) benefit to make them happy. But the actual truth is that both she and this donor class of lobbyists are actually to the right of center of mainstream opinion on the issue since a majority on both sides of the aisle actually support a Green New Deal. In any truly representative democracy a politician of her rank would be tripping over herself to support this initiative because of its widespread bipartisan support. But this is America, the New York Knicks version of a developed nation, and we can’t have nice things here either because our executive level managers are also incentivized to pander to whatever narrow-minded and self-serving oligarch pays their check. Noam Chomsky actually has a brilliant description for the entire dynamic called “institutional stupidity.” Seemingly rational people like Pelosi end up promoting harmful long-term measures because the entire system rewards their selfish pursuit of short-term gains. She’s easy to figure out because it’s her own self-interest to side with the billionaire class that made her one of the richest politicians in the country and she ultimately knows all of this shit won’t hit the fan until after she’s long gone. What vexes me are the seemingly rational liberal supporters who understand the imminence of the looming catastrophe, liberal supporters who aren’t being bribed with millions of campaign cash, defending this shill of a political con-artist as she declares it impossible to save future generations from an uninhabitable planet.

When it comes to environmental policy, there’s only one question people need to answer: How many climate change predictions in the last 30 years were accurate and how many were wildly off-base? There is idealism and realism.
My experience is that as you get older you slowly realize that the idealism of your youth was actually a delusion that was incompatible with reality. Sometimes the way you see the world and the way you think it should logically work is not how the rest of the world sees it, thinks about it or would respond to what you think is a good idea. That doesn’t mean you should stop believing in a better world. It just means that the polices we implement should reflect reality instead the delusions of idealists (even I was one once).
Making the world a better place is a very slow process. It’s kind of like rebuilding through the draft. 🙂

I believe (based on surveys) that most of the world’s population believes in climate change…I should say most of the developed world. There’s a big difference between the two.

But it’s clearly complicated by all of the vested interests…How many industries, for example, are dependent on cheap oil and coal? A rhetorical question…It really touches every aspect of society, food, heating/cooling/construction/transportation etc…I think politicians respond to what will keep them in office and that is, to some degree, cheap goods…cheap gas, cheap milk and cheese, cheap beer, ~low heating and cooling costs. Imagine the outrage if these goods suddenly increased in price by 40%.

The Rangers traded Zuccarello to Dallas for a couple of picks. The second is a third round pick in 2020, that turns into a first round 2020 pick if Zuccarello signs with Dallas this summer (he’s on the last year of his contract and is a free agent). The first pick is conditional as well, turning from a 2019 2nd rounder into a first if he plays enough and the Stars advance far enough into the playoffs.
Is this sort of thing even possible in the NBA? Could the Lakers conceivably do a ‘if Davis doesn’t resign with us that extra second reverts back to us’ kind of thing?

This Bulls team is going to be a HANDFUL in the not so distant future. They’ve been hurt all year, but with the addition of Porter and the good young pieces they already have, they are turning the corner quickly. I’m very bullish on the Bulls.
I think we’re good. The worst and second worst records have the exact same odds at the top 4 picks. The only difference is being about 20% more likely to pick 5th rather that 6th.

The biggest issue is that this seems like a 2 or 3 player draft. It’s Zion way ahead of everyone, then Morant and Barrett, then everyone else. Guaranteeing the best possible odds for a top 3 pick is still very valuable in such a draft, the absolute worst case scenario would be dropping to 4th. I’m not a fan of Barrett and Morant has issues, but losing on even them to pick up whoever rises from the Culvert / Reddish / Langford etc group would be a disgrace.
I knew Kevin Love would help, but not this much. Phoenix needs to put some shit together. Hopefully some heroball from Devin Booker bails them out. Circle March 6th. Might be the only game either of the teams win for the rest of the season.
I’m a lot higher on Barrett now than I was a month ago, when it seemed like he was having 5-19’s on the regular. The bad start *could* have been an unfortunate case of having your worst stretch at the beginning. We’ll see. His numbers are improving and could end up being much better than I anticipated.
What would be fascinating is if he leads Duke to a title while Zion is out injured. Of course that shouldn’t impact anything but it would probably lead to some debate and could open up the door for a team with young bigs like Phoenix or Chicago to consider Barrett over Zion if they landed the top pick.

Yeah, if Zion doesn’t play the tournament and Barrett is terrific, there will be a heavy debate about it. The Anthony Bennett comparisons will come back, people questioning whether Zion loves the game and all of that.
The Suns have the 8th easiest schedule remaining, (the Knicks are 13th), but they’re truly unbelievably bad and that doesn’t matter much when you can’t beat anyone. Ending up with the 2nd worst record is still fine tho, the real possible disaster, which would be the 4th or 5th worst record, is pretty much guaranteed to not happen.

I can’t see into Senator Feinstein’s soul. (I mistakenly called her Pelosi because it was late and both are high ranking white female Democrats in Congress from Congress who raise lots of lobby cash). All I can do is make determinations based on the data and it says she is on the minority right of the issue. What I do know is that politicians will find few initiatives in Congress with so much overwhelming bipartisan support. Usually those policies are rather progressive like Medicare expansion, socialized public college education, reduction of foreign wars, etc. And yet politicians like Senator Feinstein always find reasons not to implement them despite belonging to a party that lost 1,000 seats – federal and state level – between 2009 and 2018.
The Green New Deal isn’t even really a set of prescribed policies – that part is still being negotiated. What separates the imitative isn’t the how but the when. It’s about meeting goals for the decarbonization of our economy according to the scientific timetable set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Those who support the GND want to meet those timetables, Feinstein doesn’t seem to believe that is a priority.

Years ago a certain insurance company I was invested in was “cherry picking” customers in a certain state because it was very focused on profits. Well intentioned politicians decided to change the laws to make cherry picking like that illegal. They fully expected to help their constituency and make for a better insurance market. I laughed my ass off because I knew what would happen. I was right. The company simply left the state. They decided it was better to not do any business in that state than to lose money there. That left the former customers with worse insurance at a higher price and the state with even bigger bills for risky customers.
It’s not enough to want to help people and make the world a better place. You have to understand how people with different values and goals think and behave in the real world or you might make the world a worse place by accident. No easy solutions

US interests want to make sure US companies are getting a piece of the action in Venezuela instead of China or especially Russia. For that they have to install a US friendly leader to replace Maduro.
We still compete economically and politically with China and especially Russia. IMO, we’d be way better off working with them and creating stronger economic and business ties with them, but that’s another story. Instead, we allow the press, war mongers, and oil barons to turn them into feared boogie men so we can justify higher military spending, more wars, and more interference as having a moral motive when we just want the oil and money and don’t give a shit about the people.
To be clear, I think the people of Venezuela would be way better off if they rejected anything and everything even close to socialism, but it’s not our place to decide what’s best for other people.
IMO, the neocons with the president’s ear right now (and several other presidents before him) are among the worst human beings earth has ever produced.

These things are remarkably popular, when they are divorced from specific proposals and from specific politicians/parties. The ideas behind the GND are very popular, but if you refer to it as the GND that popularity drops fast on all sides. It’s one of the things folks like Feinstein have to deal with. The GND will not pass this Senate, no matter how popular it is. Just because we really need to do these things does not mean it’s possible to do these things. Maybe in two years, if we are extremely lucky.
This isn’t a defense of Feinstein per se, but just like we need people and politicians pulling us towards the right path, we need folks who are focused on practicalities of what’s actually possible given the strange and dysfunctional nature of US politics.
