Memo to Kenyon Martin: Put the cracks pipe down, you are hallucinating. Lebron and Paul George are not going to sign with the Knicks. April Fools day is long past, stop trolling Knick fans with this nonsense.

sounds very unlikely Michael Porter will get past Chicago — his agent is very tight with Bulls management, he’s staying in Chicago during the draft process, and had the Bulls’ physicians do his physical…

Wow, I never thought I’d live to see the day that Jud Buechler became a Knick.

that’s an eclectic group of assistants… all young too…. gives me hope that we’ll operate in a modern and open-minded way…. but for the first time in a long while there’s a lack of steady and long experience on the bench…

I think that’s a good approach with this particular group of players we have but I hope that we don’t start pulling some grizzled vets to fulfill that role of ‘experience’….

didn’t realize that… but it always seemed that we had some old lifer somewhere on the bench throughout all these tenures… woodson, rambis, brown, malone, jvg, wilkins, chaney etc….

    I guess smart approaches that…

@6 I think the Knicks finally have it figured out. I worry about Steve “let’s renounce Ron Baker just to make good and give him the full MLE and then give TH2 a 4 year/$70M deal” Mills around, but Scott Perry seems to be the de facto POBO with Mills getting the position through Doloyalty. I like having Michelle Obama’s brother around, I love the Fizdale hire (if he can make Marc Gasol take 400 3s he can make KP stick at center), and I thought the development and rehabilitation of Trey Burke was an excellent job. I like Dolan’s “never trade 1st round picks” policy that he had to pay somebody in 2013 to tell him was necessary, and I like that Dolan has largely been out of the way since Phil Jackson got hired. I wish Kanter would opt out already, but McDermott and Kanter were more useful pieces than Melo was this year, we landed the 36th pick in what might be a 50 prospect draft, and didn’t take back any salary.

What they do in this draft matters a lot. Yahoo is reporting that Boston is worried they may lose Kyrie Irving to the Knicks (lol), but that’s so far down the pipeline all that really matters is these next two drafts and the rehabiliation of Porzingis’ knee. I feel like we can trust Perry, Fizdale, the scouting department, and to a lesser extent Steve Mills and Dolan to not mess things up. New York is a city that should always have a good basketball program so long as we’re not paying the wrong players and trading 1st round picks. This is a very different decade if:

    1) We didn’t give Amar’e’s right knee $100M and
    2) We never traded the farm for Melo.

As long as we don’t invest $100M in bad knees and go full Billy King over DeMar DeRozan, we’re going to be fine.

I think we go for Mikal, but I hope we get one of these guys in the 2nd round: Omari Spellman, Jarred Vanderbilt, De’Anthony Melton.

    I guess smart approaches that…

Smart was the coach of the Warriors before Mark Jackson. I say that only as an interesting thing about Keith Smart. 🙂

” The Story of the Wife Who Defended Her Husband in a Way That Left Him Unemployed ”

Weird seeing the Times reporting it that way as that’s just BS. There’s no way that that was just Colangelo’s wife without him being involved.

Whoa, NBADraft updated their mock to have Orlando take Mikal at 6. Do they know something we don’t?

I looked to see if there was any buzz about Mikal and Orlando on Twitter, and found the following from a no-name on Twitter, “Key NBA sources tell me the Magic are “drooling and salivating” over Villanova foward Mikal Bridges. 3 more scouts I talked to today think Bridges will become the next James Worthy. Sitting at pick # 6, look for Orlando to pick Bridges and design the offense around him………..”

Like I said, the Twitter guy was a no-name, but that’s also a fairly odd thing to make up. It was followed pretty quickly by ESPN moving Bridges up to the Magic, ya know?

I don’t wanna jinx it, but I’m starting to think Trae Young might actually drop to us.

Well, let’s say that Chicago does go Porter and Orlando goes Mikal. Then does Cleveland really pass up Young to go with, say, Carter? Seems kind of unlikely, no? Young sort of slots into Cleveland pretty darn well.

Then does Cleveland really pass up Young to go with, say, Carter? Seems kind of unlikely, no? Young sort of slots into Cleveland pretty darn well.

I take it you’re not a big Jordan Clarkson believer?

If Porter is letting every team in the top 10 see his medical reports and working out for all of them, then he’s going 5th overall to Dallas and maybe as high as #2 to Sacramento. That’s always been my fear; not that he was healthy, but that he would workout for everybody. Now, to update my mock draft:

    Ayton
    Doncic
    Bamba
    Bagley
    Porter Jr
    Young
    Carter Jr
    Sexton
    Mikal Bridges

Mikal Bridges worries me so much. He’s the one prospect that I want to feel good about but can’t because of a few things. For one, he is not an agile player. He has trouble sliding his feet and staying in front of guys, but he’s long as shit so he makes up for it there. However, guards with a tight handle can separate from him no problem so that may limit his positional versatility on defense. He’s not the best rebounder, either, so you really can’t play him anywhere but the 3 and he may only be able to defend the 2 and the 3 instead of 1-4 as pundits are lauding him. There’s a decent chance he’s Justin Holiday and not Robert Covington, and I hope the Knicks really do their homework on him.

I remember being surrounded by Syracuse fans when Keith Smart hit that shot to beat them in the finals.

    Good times.

someone is gonna fall… hopefully it’s carter… but hoping it’s not someone like bagley or bamba….

I can live with young and maybe porter….

“I think they’re scared. I think they’re scared and should be scared to some degree of Kyrie Irving walking in 2019. I know he had a great year, but you know there are people in Cleveland that will tell you that the Knicks should be considered a real threat for Kyrie Irving. Because Kyrie had talked about it, about playing with the Knicks with some players in that Cleveland locker room from what I was told.”

That’s from the Yahoo Sports report that Kyrie Irving may leave Boston for New York. Considering that Kyrie Irving’s father is from the Bronx and Kyrie Irving played alongside Iman Shumpert, JR Smith, Channing Frye, and a slew of other former Knicks that went to Cleveland, I want to take some time out to acknowledge the 3D Chess Phil Jackson was playing. How crazy would it be if the JR Smith/Iman Shumpert trade, who once said he believes everybody should experience being a New York Knick, is one of the reasons Kyrie Irving ends up in a Knicks jersey? I worry about those knees, but that would be serendipity at its finest.

I think Kyrie Irving is the one superstar dumb enough to leave this Celtics future situation because he wants somehow to go to the Knicks. If we got 2017-18 healthy Kyrie as a free agent, sign me up. I’m worried we would actually get the Amare Stoudemire version of Kyrie Irving.

On the draft, I think there’s just no way Cleveland doesn’t draft Young if he’s available. He would be the next Kyrie Irving to rebuild post-Lebron and the biggest name available to keep fans engaged after James leaves, and they desperately need guards. Specially if Mikal is gone, there’s no reason for them to look for a big man when Love and Thompson are presumably still there.

Bill Simmons’s trolling (at least I hope he’s just trolling since this is silly for everyone but Boston) idea is LeBron to Boston with Kyrie to the Knicks, and Knicks #9, Enes, Mudiay, Marcus Morris to Cleveland.

Bill Simmons’s trolling (at least I hope he’s just trolling since this is silly for everyone but Boston) idea is LeBron to Boston with Kyrie to the Knicks, and Knicks #9, Enes, Mudiay, Marcus Morris to Cleveland.

That doesn’t seem silly for the Knicks. I don’t think I’d do it, but even if, say, Young were available, you’re basically hoping he turns into Kyrie. If he does, then you have a (young)er version with healthy knees on a great salary. But if he doesn’t….then that’s actually in line with the odds for pick #9, and you got nothing.

It’s silly on at least 2 levels for the Knicks:
    1) there’s no KP next season, so the team will suck anyway
    2) Kyrie will be a free agent after next season, so we could just sign him then w/o giving up a pick. Also, he could just leave after the season once he gets a taste of Dolanville.

Trading the 9th overall pick, Enes Kanter, and Emmanuel Mudiay in order to get back Kyrie Irving? That isn’t even half silly. The only problem is how that knee would hold up, but man that would be a big win for everybody except Cleveland. How do you trade LeBron to Boston and not insist somebody takes JR Smith or Tristan Thompson’s contract?

@23 that makes sense, but what if Kristaps Porzingis is actually back by January?

    1) there’s no KP next season, so the team will suck anyway
    2) Kyrie will be a free agent after next season, so we could just sign him then w/o giving up a pick. Also, he could just leave after the season once he gets a taste of Dolanville.

These are not good reasons. Yes, possibly we could sign him next year, but on terms far worse than whoever has his rights. And even if you think the earth is flat, an extra $15 million (or whatever it is) probably still gets your attention enough to think that, you know, maybe I can play for the Knicks in my next contract….

The only reason I would be on the fence is that trading the 9 and getting Kyrie leaves us less poor in terms of assets, but still poor…and Kyrie’s knee might not hold up long enough for the team to get anywhere.

but what if Kristaps Porzingis is actually back by January?

Then he returned from his injury too soon.

    @25 – what 27 said.

If KP was healthy, you could maybe talk me into it after a few drinks. It would be fun at least for once.

so that trade basically has Bos trading an injured Kyree and a Morris for Lebon? Or….Cleveland basically trading Lebron for our 9th pick and some filler?

I think there’s a better chance that the Uncle Drew movie wins an oscar.

Actually, on that note…..who wins? Uncle Drew’s crew (I looked it up, it’s him, Shak, Chris Webber, Nate Robinson, Reggie Miller and Lesa Leslie) or our opening day roster?

If Irving’s knee is completely healthy, which is a pretty big if in a scenario where Ainge actively wants to trade him, Id do it. As much as I want this team to fully rebuild let’s be honest, they won’t, and if Kyrie manages to keep up his stats from this past season he is a 26 year old superstar which is better than anything we’ve had in the last decade or more.

I was against trading for him last year because I didn’t expect him to be so good after leaving the Cavs, but he did perform very very well. The 9th pick is not very valuable to be honest and getting rid of Enes and Mudiay might be an improvement after all. If Irving then leaves next year it’s the same as if Enes opted in and left anyway salary wise and we still have all our future picks and everything else to rebuild.

Like I said, the Twitter guy was a no-name, but that’s also a fairly odd thing to make up.

    It’s clearly John Hammond’s wife.

I don’t think Ainge is going to just allow Irving to walk. If Irving wants to come to NY we are going to have to trade for him somehow. Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem with doing that as long as we traded a future 1st round pick. We are too far away to trade away this year’s pick. However, if we had a young core of KP, Irving, Frank, Bridges (with Hardaway, Burke, Dotson, and O’Quinn on the bench), we’d need one more solid player to go to war with just about anyone in 2020/2021. The question would be KP and Kyrie’s knees.

    @35

But Ainge doesn’t have a choice in the matter, why would we have to trade something? Irving has one more year of contract then a player option for 2019-20, he’s a free agent if he wants after next season.

I understand you guys feel like he has magical powers, but contracts are contracts.

Lol did I just read that Enes Kanter (and his $25M option) and Emmanuel Mudiay would be significant pieces of a three-way trade of the best player in the league and a top-3 PG in the East? Ahahahahhahhahahahahhahahahahaha yeah no that’s not going to happen

Hey someone call Utah and see f they’ll give us Mitchell and Gobert for Noah and Timmy!

Here’s a video that might you feel a little better once we draft Miles Bridges. If Fizdale wants to have an uptempo ball-movement offense it’d help to have a wing who’s an above average passer.

“Defense, of course, that’s where I take my pride,’’ Bridges said. “Shooting the ball. I shoot the ball really well and transition and finishing. That’s my top three. Ball-handling and play-making, people say I need a lot of work. I know I do, but it’s better than people think.”

Asked about his “3 and D’’ branding, Bridges said, “I take pride in defense more than anything. So I’d rather people say I’m a defensive guy.’’

“I have a lot of work to do,’’ Bridges said. “I’m not close to being a finished product. I’m not going to stop until I’m the best basketball player I can be. I got a lot of things to work on [things] I thought I was really good at, but not close.”

    Music to my ears.

Here’s a really good video on Mikal Bridges’ defense. I think it sums up my apprehensions well.

I think you can make a reel of any player’s defensive lapses.
On the other side of the ball, offensive highlight reels can be very misleading. Look at Lonnie Walker’s youtube highlights and you’d think he should be #1 pick overall.

I listened to a Dunc’d On podcast that discussed Bagley. It scared the hell out of me. It started out by saying that maybe Bagley is the sort of player that is good at things the NBA doesn’t value much anymore. When it came to discussing his defense, it seemed it was anot issue. I came away thinking, maybe he’s going to drop in the draft and be available for the Knicks and I don’t want that to happen. If we have to pick player with poor defense, I want it to be someone like Young

If Ainge sees the handwriting on the wall he’ll try to make a move sooner. But you are right. If Irving is determined to come to NY, willing to wait, willing to sacrifice a lot of money, and NY has the cap space, it’s going to be hard for Ainge to get anything.

Kyle O’quinn sitting behind home plate eating French fries! Lol!

I’d tell Danny Ainge to go fuck himself if he offered us that deal. Kyrie has one year left on his contract and is coming off what, his 4th knee surgery? He’s a wonderful offensive player when he’s healthy, which is not that often, but we don’t need a great point guard next year because we’re going to suck anyhow, and after that Kyrie is going to want to get big money and I don’t want to give big money to a guy who can’t stay healthy. He’s 3/7 for in terms of being reasonably healthy for the entire season.

    @43

Yeah, I’m hoping sorta against reason that this front office has learned from watching the mistakes with the Carmelo Anthony trade and won’t force something similar so Kyrie gets his money. If he wants to come it’s great, but it can’t be another Amare / Melo situation with Porzingis + Irving.

The thing that worries me about miles bridges is he’s pretty good at a bunch of things but he doesn’t seem to have any elite skills. Pretty good offensive player, pretty good rebounder, can pass pretty well for a forward.

No thanks on trading for Kyrie. No skipping steps this time around. Let’s build this from the ground up.

The Cavs are getting swept, but think about how ridiculous giving the finals MVP to anyone not named Lebron James is. He’s going to average something like 36-8-8 against one of the best basketball teams every assembled.

Anyone listen to Charles Oakley on the Simmons podcast? If you’re an old like me it’s really worth a listen. He was talking about how the big teams in his era were deep like the Warriors and then described the Cavs as Lebron ‘playing with 4 guys who work for the city.’

Yeah that Oakley interview reminded me of like 20 different fake brawls I’d forgotten about. Brad Miller was pretty fortunate that he happened to have two of the tougher guys in NBA history on the floor with him when Shaq decided to attempt homicide.

The chances we build this team exclusively from the ground up are quite low. The only way you can do that is to get extraordinarily lucky in the draft or to have injuries that allow you to draft higher than you should in multiple years (like the 76ers). Sooner or later we are going to have to sign a star free agent or roll up up a couple of picks and/or players into one.

You can argue that Kyrie is not that guy because of injuries, but he’s only 26 and he IS that kind of talent. Not everyone on the team has to be 22 or younger.

If the Knicks traded for Kyrie he would end up eating Vaseline on YouTube

Kyrie may not be the brightest bulb in the room, but he’s a terrific player. As everyone noted, his knees are the issue.

I don’t think Stephon was stupid at all, he was just in a heavy depression. Kyrie on the other hand seems to be pretty stupid to be honest.

As I’m one of the only defenders of the “Stephon was actually better than people give him credit for” argument, Kyrie would still be the best PG we’ve had since forever though. It just scares me he would come and be Amare 2.0, have some really nice moments and then the injuries catch up and he’s overpaid and done.
