2017-18 Game Thread: Knicks @ Spurs

This teams makes no sense sometimes, so honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them somehow pull off the upset in San Antonio. They have played well here in recent years, winning once and coming one rimmed out three by Calderon from winning again two years ago.

Plus, no Kawhi tonight for the Spurs.

So, hey, stranger things have happened!

Let’s go, Knicks!

the KOQ to McBuckets back cut pass for a 1950s layup is my favorite recurring character of this season

It just doesn’t matter

It just doesn’t matter

Porzingis: 4 points on 6 FGA
Lance Thomas: 0-1 from the floor in 6 minutes
Ron Baker: 4 minutes, 0 points, 0 assists, 0 rebounds, 0 steals
Frank Ntilikina: 8 minutes, 0 points
Willy Hernangomez: DNP-CD

That’s my Knicks!

Team was playing well, Frank was cooking, then KP comes back and promptly bricks a mid range turnaround jumper.

coming off a bad loss on a back to back that was a pretty well played and entertaining half of basketball

If for some reason he and the Spurs don’t want to stay together for 2-3 more years, I don’t think there’s a better fit for him in he league. He says he wants to play til he’s 40. Even in decline I just think he offers so much that we’re desperate for. It would be incredible for Frank. KP might actually get the ball in good positions. And I think there’s appeal for him (Tony), too. I don’t know if the MLE is enough to get it done, though

It’s another one of those games where all the starters have a negative +/- and all the bench guys are positive. So far.

Would Parker ever leave Pop?

Is this a philosophical question or are you asking if the Knicks should sign another ancient point guard to “run” the offense?

If the former, I think Parker would rather be dead than play for the Knicks. Like actually dead.

Frank has 6 assists and 0 turnovers, he and Beasley are kinda keeping this game alive.

Ron steals 2 points at the end of the quarter.

@18
Actually, it was a rhetorical question in response to posts 12 and 14.

@18 eye roll

Yeah let’s just stick with Jack and Sessions. Dude’s having a better season at 36 than any Knicks PG most of us have ever seen.

If I were Hornecek, I would fine anyone who takes a mid-range jumper instead of a 3-pointer. They need to start raining 3’s, especially down double figures.

that Courtney 3 was our 10th 3PA. The low for the year in the NBA is 12, done three times. Twice by us.

3 point shooting is a major part of the NBA today because of the amount of point guards that penetrate a defense. The year we had Felton we were able to rain threes because Felton could collapse a defense. We really need Trae Young.

you could place a land mine two feet inside the arc and Jarrett jack would say fuck it and take a dribble

@29

I heavily disagree.

Yes, a Point Guard penetrating obviously helps creating 3 point looks, but it’s far from the only element involved. An iso scorer who won’t pass out of double teams to open 3s like KP won’t help either. It’s on coaching and on the players.

How many times have we watched guys like Lee, Beasley or Jack for example dribbling inside the line to shoot a long 2 when they had a 3?

Silver Linings? A generally good game from Frank, and maybe someone will fork over a 2nd rounder for Beasley next month as he filled up the stat sheet, esp. in garbage time.

KP is getting better at passing out of double teams, but you really need a penetrating point guard in today’s game. And tonight KP made a great pass out of a double team to Frank for Frank to get cute and not shoot but instead turn it over on a pass to Beasley. There’s a reason D’Antoni always wanted the ball in a point guard’s hands instead of a guy who gets double teams like Stat, Melo, or even Kobe. Guard penetration and pick and roll action is the best way to get three point jumpers. Defenses need to collapse if you want good looking threes.

not quite sure what the heck is going on with my NBA app – but, still about seven and a half minutes in the game for me…

not an absolutely horrendous effort by the guys, just inconsistent – and, watching kp complain about calls without getting back on defense is becoming a thing…

horny is starting to do weird stuff with his rotations again – why no kanter?

just saw beasley’s numbers…having another good game…guess that’s why no kanter…

someone mentioned earlier today about kp being more active on offense…he really doesn’t do such a great job of making it in to the post…he keeps setting up about 2 or 3 feet inside the arc…

for better or worse – seems like it’s time for frank to start…

How many times have we watched guys like Lee, Beasley or Jack for example dribbling inside the line to shoot a long 2 when they had a 3?

Exactly!
The Knicks need to make it a point to chuck up a minimum of 5 threes every quarter. 10 would be better. The Knicks are dead last in 3pt attempts per game in the NBA (22.0) and shoot 36%. Note that the Rockets top the NBA (42.2) and shoot 37%

over 80% of 3s are assisted… you can’t just jack up 3point shots… you need folks who are willing and able to shoot them and folks who can get them those shots…. we don’t have either…..

But as Bruno said, the Knicks are passing up open three’s for two’s just inside the line.

You can definitely jack up 3 point shots. I can do that, I just don’t make very many. It’s not a question of what the ideal shot is, it’s a question of whether jacking up 3 pointers is better than what we normally do. I don’t have any of the numbers, but why the hell not try it when our offense is doo doo.

jack guarding tony Parker looked like someone chasing their grandson around the park

An actual lol….

Yeah, that’s the point.

If we had Eric Gordon or Ryan Anderson getting the type of looks Beasley, Jack, Lance or Lee get they would shoot like 14 threes every game. Those players, and KP to some extent, simply refuse to take 3s sometimes and the coach’s gameplan is not focused on creating such opportunities.

Breen has been talking for like 5 games about how Hornacek wants Lee to shoot more threes, for example. If we had an offense based on guys who can get to the rim or great post players that would be understandable, but that’s obviously not the case.

Checked in late, predictable road loss to a good team. The Knicks may be tanking whether they mean to or not.
