2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks @ Hawks

In this pathetic shitshow of a Conference, the New York Knicks are now just a game and a half back of the #7 seed. The Knicks are six games under .500 and yet they’re practically in the playoffs! This is pretty much the worst case scenario for this team. They’re a bad team that needs to blow the team up, but every other team in the Eastern Conference is also a bad team (and a few of them should also blow their team up – I’m looking at you, Indiana and Chicago). So the Knicks are very much in danger of doing just well enough against all of these other shitty teams that they’ll screw over any chance that they have to get into prime lottery position. Not only that, but does anyone really think Carmelo Anthony wants off of the team if they’re suddenly right smack in the playoff picture?

So, with all of that in mind, the Knicks really need to lose to an awful (and yet somehow the #4 seed in this awful, awful conference. This conference is the Carmelo Anthony No Trade Clause of conferences) Atlanta Hawks team.

Let’s go, Knicks?

Pregame expose on KP shows how MSG is already promoting the new era of Porzingis.

Melo’s big first quarter probably means a bad 4th quarter. But maybe Doc’s watching?

at the game. watching kuz guard dunleavy is like if cage played both characters in face off.

With the way Melo has been playing lately maybe the Cavs will trade LeBron for him.

KP looks like he was up late protesting at hartsfield. His reaction time is Eddie lee Wilkins wearing an oculus.

Nothing more automatic than the Knicks getting a double-digit lead then immediately allowing wide open 3pters. It’s uncanny.

Judging by the Atlanta announcers, the Hawks sound like they would give up a lot to have Melo.
They’re also suggesting this may be the last time they see Melo in Knicks’ colors.

In the modern game, KP is definitely a 5 on defense, but he’s not a very good defender at the 5 either. He’s not strong enough yet.

Other than rim protection (which is pretty nice, ok), KP looks positively Bargsy on D this year

watching kuz guard dunleavy is like if cage played both characters in face off.

ahahahahahahaha

melo with the understatement of the year: “we need to turn the defense up a notch” – ya think?

@35

It’s in memorial for Michael Goldburg who passed away a few days ago. They did it against Charlotte as well.

We’re imploding this is exactly what we need

If the knicks keep “showcasing” melo, the clippers will ask that porzingis, hernangomez and this year’s pick be included in the package.

I don’t care what we do with Carmelo Anthony so long as when we’re picking we’re in position to select Jonathan Isaac.

@17: y’know, that bring to mind what came to me yesterday:

Atlanta – we think of it as a meh sports town, but as a city, it’s hot and growing, as has grown exponentially as a media destination over the last, what, 5-10 years? Conceivably, it has all the resources that Melo and his wife would want. The Hawks are trying to retool while maintaining perennial playoff contention, they’ve got a young up and coming PG, a good coach off the Popovich tree, and their ownership – after years of discord – may have finally gotten its shit together. Atlanta should be a dark-horse candidate for Melo, or at least part of a chess-move leak to make the Clips and Cavs a bit antsy.

If any major, big-market city needs a Super Bowl win right now, it’s Atlanta.

THjr making up for those two games he won us in 2014-15

Willy only one minute? Maybe he’s part of the imminent trade? Baker and Rivers should be our SGs next year if we’re rebuilding.

Melo = tankalicious

The Knicks may have to sweeten the deal with Porzingis to get rid of Melo.

@BBA, that trade got us Rose! It’s basically the same as that Rafer Alston trade that got Houston Lowry, whom they traded for the pick that got them Harden.

Clips Melo = Olympics Melo >> Knicks melo

But Nigeria, Peru and Japan are not in the NBA!

Bow tie is a bold look, and can be pulled off, but I’d reserve it for when you’re 40-22 and you can do pretty much anything (except you, Blatt) and not get fired.

This quarter pretty much sums up everything I love and hate about this particular team.

If we start lucking into close games again that’ll be really fucking annoying

The Unicorn can’t rebound for shit. He’s either hurt or overrated.

I’m not going to make any projections, but he’s very overrated right now.

He’s a below average rebounder for his position.

He’s a below average defender other than shot blocking.

He’s not a good play maker at all.

He’s a “plus” scorer, but not very plus.

He’s basically an average NBA player right now.

Hawk’s announcer on the Melo turnover: “again too much ball handling on the part of the Knicks, to o much isolation.”

KP is slightly above league average at the moment. I’m not too worried about it. If he doesn’t improve in year three though I’m getting very worried. If he remains average in year 4, I give up on him.

He’s been looking a lot like Bargs lately…

Complaining that a 21 year old Euro is average is so lame…so fucking lame.

I’m not going to make any projections, but he’s very overrated right now.

He’s also a skinny 20 year old most said was going to take at least 3-4 years to come on. He’s been playing average as of late since and around the time of his achillies injury, so I wouldn’t be writing him off just yet.

Trade Melo while the gettin is good people

The tank needs to go full steam ahead

@73: he’s shown the leap in the first third of this year. Even if he’s regressed a bit lately, I look fwd to the improvements he’ll make this summer.

It’d be nice if his defense would be at a level to elevate the team. I just think that’s too much to ask right now with as bad as perimeter defense we have.

He’s also a skinny 20 year old most said was going to take at least 3-4 years to come on. He’s been playing average as of late since and around the time of his achillies injury, so I wouldn’t be writing him off just yet.

I was clear I wasn’t making any projections, but he is WAY behind quite a few young big men in the league right now.

God damn Timmy can’t even ice the game out for us

I’ve managed to convince myself that if the knicks lose – we really win…and, if the knicks win – well, we win, no big deal…get to have a nice little buzz from my team actually winning a game, for a change…
I’m happy I’ve been able to reach this level of ambivalence at this point in the season without having to entirely tune out…

Melo makes two nice defensive plays down the stretch and hits a shot.
Credit where credit is due

All we need is to fail in overtime and all shall have been accomplished.

Look yal..we need Jennings to take over in OT. I like massive..err..Accident Tank’s idea of drafting Isaac from FSU if he’s available. Just imagine the possibilities of a Willy/KP/Isaac frontcourt with Lee and a better floor general than 25 in the backcourt. I like that alot

League officials have become oversensitive to the bullshit contact calls which crafty guards are drawing.

The Hawks are honestly bad. Their SRS is 17th and their Pythag is 23-24. The reason no one besides Brooklyn can “pull away” in the tankthon is because, as BC often points out, everyone sucks pretty equally.

hey man…hope everyone is having a good Sunday, and, if you out there working today, hope it goes quick and smooth…

up by 3, let’s see what happens…

Another airball off ISO Melo.
Good lord. There was no doubt all star was going to take a horrible shot

This team is just gonna win 35 games per year for like the next 50 years. The sooner we all embrace that, the better.

If they call this a jump ball I guess we all have to thank the refs for keeping the tank going. Clearly out on Howard.

clyde: “yeah, a, I don’t think that melo iso is a good thing”…no clyde – it really isn’t…

Theo, please go away. Nothing about Porzingis is like Bargnani. His defensive deficiencies are totally different. His offensive strengths are already much stronger. Please.

Don’t feed the trolls.

I think sometimes Theo’s comments are good. But this is str8 troll and not even attempting to be humorous.

Melo has missed iron twice, so no doubt he’s putting this up from where ever, however.

I am conflicted. I want us to lose but I also want ClutchMelo to up our trade bounty.

So much angst.

c’mon man, this is a new york knicks site…no one should be safe, porzaini is fumny as hell (i swear, there were times when bargnani would play and i would think – well, he looks like he has some skills)…at some point in the future, willy and baker are gonna have their’s coming too…

I meant this comment:

Clippers asking for 5 picks now. They no longer want Porziagni.

I hate rooting for the Knicks to lose but I hate the idea of 37 wins and the 13th pick even more

This is the worst double OT game I’ve ever seen

I’m just amazed the Hawks have the arena nearly filled…there are a lot of ny jerseys though…

Atlanta Hawks PR feed just tweeted this: We get it Melo. You’re good at basketball.

Phil needs to retweet this to Doc.

The refs must’ve put A LOT of money on the Hawks

The Wizards will soon pass them, though, and the Wizards are a reasonable enough #4 seed at the moment.

If I was rooting for the Knicks I’d be furious about the officiating lol. Refs are either Hawks fans or smart Knicks fans.

I’m following on Gamecast. I feel like the Hawks haven’t realized yet that they should win this game.

At this rate it’ll go beyond boosting his trade value, Phil will be convinced he needs to fucking keep him and we’ll win 39 games

Officiating in the NBA is by far the worst of the major team sports and it’s not even close.

At this rate it’ll go beyond boosting his trade value, Phil will be convinced he needs to fucking keep him and we’ll win 39 games

That bridge has been burnt to a crisp.

Omfg no one wants to win this interminable shit show

I think the officials are really fixing it for us to tank. I have to thank them for this. They really care about out lottery place.

It would be the most Knicksian thing in the universe for us to win this game.

Time for our bench to show what it’s got.
Hawks now don’t know where the shot is coming from.

If we lose this it’s the backbreaking loss of the season

Please lose for the love of god

The most ambivalent cheer ever to s last-second game-tying 3. But I’m happy for Lee after that bizarre Wiz game.

I’m sorry but I don’t know how the fuck you can call yourself a Knicks fan and be watching this game rooting for them to lose.

I’m sorry but I don’t know how the fuck you can call yourself a Knicks fan and be watching this game rooting for them to lose.

Agreed
Very exciting.

Yeah, gotta root for the win here. What a gutsy performance on the road with pretty one-sided officiating going on.

@211

Because any real Knicks fan knows the moment we actual want to win the game is the moment we give up the game winning 3.

BBA, c’mon. You’re better than that. To each his or her own, but in the grand scheme of things this win would mean absolutely nothing while this loss could have great reverberations for our future. It’s just an objective truth. I don’t pass judgment on anyone’s “true fandom” and neither should you.

If we keep winning during this crucial pre trade deadline period we don’t trade Melo and we get the 14th pick in the draft and we don’t trade anyone and we’re mediocre forever

big blue al…ain’t no one reading these words that wouldn’t be rooting for the blue and orange (white and orange today I guess)…

Makes me happy I’m not watching the game then, so I can still root against them, I’m watching the pre-show for the Royal Rumble.

Clutch play from CLee.

But I gotta ask: if you’re Schroeder and you’re up 3 with the and1 opportunuty to make it a 4 pt game that late in the game, how do u miss that free throw?

life is a state of mind…live for the day…win, lose or draw (thank god there are no ties in basketball), knicks did well today…

Soon we’re gonna have to put Rambis and Hornacek on the court with all these foul outs

Millsap and Schroder figured out long ago that the refs will not call an offensive foul on them.

LOL the refs are just letting the Hawks get away with murder. I love it.

OK., now it’s really clear the refs are in on it.

It’d be nice if someone could at least hit the rim though.

Clyde and his broadcast partner are besides themselves at the officiating in this game.

There is absolutely no way the refs didn’t put money on the Hawks

Thank god for corruption

I hope Kuz remembers this game this summer when he’s working out to build some core body strength. Millsap just abusing him.

Embrace the tank, people. Once you release yourselves from the agony of desiring to win all shall be right.

Schroeder has been fucking terrible. Its just obscene how clueless he’s looked out there running the offense.

I’m rooting for a loss and am not in any less agony right now…

I’m rooting for a loss and am not in any less agony right now…

Release yourself of all desire.

Hawks have given up offensively. They have zero options out there. I actually think we’re going to win this. Horny will draw something nice up and we’ll get a good shot. Schroeder is just rattled and wants to go home. He’s throwing it away.

I hope you “real fans” are happy now when pick in the mid-rounds and don’t have shit to show for another worthless season.

If trade goes through (phil needs to surrender 5 picks), Clippers to give Melo a NLSC (no last shot clause)

LOL, I think we’re in a basketball Hell of never ending overtimes.

In so many of the Knicks’ games this year both teams so fucking obviously deserve the L. The East is terrible.

In so many of the Knicks’ games this year both teams so fucking obviously deserve the L. The East is terrible.

Pretty much. This is the #4 seed in the conference!!

not so sure how to define “real fans”…i am pretty sure though – my wants and desires have zero impact on what actually happens to the knicks…

except for the time when I listened to the full version of rappers delight (the song with the verse: ‘I got a color TV, so I can see, the knicks play basketball) – i’m pretty sure I had a direct and substantial impact on that particular game…

Willy 1 minute???? lmao

Dunleavy and their backup point guard on hawks need to be playing more

Hawks offensive has regressed to a two mad game between Shroeder and Milsap.

I’ve been quite for about a week.
But I just have to say this is the best f’n game of the season!

How these guys after all these minutes played still have the legs to make these 3pters is pretty incredible.

I guess it takes the Knicks an hour to warm up. Suddenly dudes are making shots.

Edit: except when they’re 2 feet away.

you see those knick folks holding the banner in the stands – that’s why you play the game – to win, for those fans in the stands…

There’s a shot that this could become the greatest regular season game in Knicks history.

I think Milsap ended up having a better game than Melo when it was all said and done.

We need to have a season where we trick the basketball gods into thinking we’re trying to tank when we’re actually not. We’d challenge the GSW record regardless of personnel.

I’ve been following the knicks since ’85…I still haven’t seen the greatest knick game – the one where they win the very last game of the season…

If we lose, Muslims and Christians will cheer hand-in-hand in New Jersey and everywhere else…

This can be the type of demoralizing loss which can break a team’s spirit. So the game’s tediousness was not in vain.

I think Milsap ended up having a better game than Melo when it was all said and done.

He did play almost 20 more mins.

He did play almost 20 more mins.

That’s why it was so great. It was 60 minutes of basketball and he was last man standing carrying his team on his back. Impressive as fuck.

Everyone’s happy. But you’re not. That sucks. Silver lining isn’t good enough tonight

This was a great game for us.

Melo dominated and looked elite.

We lost a demoralizing heartbreaking game.

Holy fuck there was like a 50-60% chance this game was going to 5 OT

Thank you Courtney

This was a great game for us.

Melo dominated and looked elite.

We lost a demoralizing heartbreaking game.

Indeed. Good for Melo’s trade value, good for encouraging both Melo and Phil to want to part ways, good for discouraging Phil from trying to go for the 8th seed.

All shall bow down before The Tank!

Nonbelievers shall be purged from Knicks Nation!

Yes!! Knicks lost!! Now they will wind up with the 12th pick instead of the 15th pick!! Woohoo!!

Yes!! Knicks lost!! Now they will wind up with the 12th pick instead of the 15th pick!! Woohoo!!

…that’s actually not insignificant, though.

Infidel! Blasphemer! You worship the False Idol of sub. 500 8th seed!

Man. I go to a meeting for an hour and see we end up going down in 4th OT.

Gotta feel for the players in a loss like that. Busted their asses for 4 OT’s still to come up short. Heartbreaking for players and non-KB fans. Joy for the tank advocates.

Knicks fans will get what they want a tank that ends in Phil picking a bust. Happy Tanking to all.

…that’s actually not insignificant, though.

It was only a bigger difference between us getting Seth Curry and Jordan Hill, but who cares as long as we can have the privilege of being swept by the Cavaliers in the first round?

Indeed. Good for Melo’s trade value, good for encouraging both Melo and Phil to want to part ways, good for discouraging Phil from trying to go for the 8th seed.

BOOM.

You know, I’d have a much harder (read: impossible) time rooting for losses if we had a young, exciting team. I will never get mad at a win fueled by KP or Willy, for example. This game though? You really want to tell me that there’s any value in a win fueled by guys we all agree should either never have been here in the first place, or shouldn’t be here in the near future?

I don’t pass judgment on anybody. Rooting for the Knicks to win is what comes naturally to me so this ain’t easy. But we know better than anybody what a meaningless win here and there can do. The Knicks fans on Earth 2 where Stephen Curry brought the Knicks back to relevance are not still sad about losing out the last 3 games of the 2008-2009 season.

This isn’t me telling anyone else how they should feel. We all want what’s best for the Knicks in the end. Some of us have different ideas of what constitutes that and that’s okay.

Refs won this for the tank.
In 4OTs, Knicks get 4 calls to 14 for Hawks.
Lee’s 2 FTs in third OT were only Knicks FTs in all 4 OTs.
Hawks went 9/14 from the line in the 4OTs.

The main thing I feel about the Knicks these days is apathy. There is really not a lot to get excited about with this bunch. They’ll fart around the rest of the season, win their usual 35 games, then end up with like TJ Leaf or Ivan Rabb or something. Wake me up when Phil’s contract expires. This shit is boring.

I mostly agree, but if we trade off some useful guys we’re in a great position in the race to the bottom. I don’t regard it as likely, but is there something better to root for right now?

Great point and 100 percent agree. The same people complaining about how Phil couldn’t put together a team want to see it win games. They don’t believe the team is any good or that it will ever be any better but they somehow are upset when the quickest means of rebuilding occurs.

Melo’s commitment to being traded to LA is pretty impressive. He’s lighted it up since the trade talk began. He’s on a real mission to leave.

It’s normal to want a win when you’re watching your team.

It’s smart to want a loss when you know it’s the best way to build for the future.

Tough loss.

You know we’re only 5 games ahead of the 29th place Phoenix Suns? I’m gonna go watch and read as much content as I can on Jonathan Isaac.

I like Jonathan Isaac a lot. There are three blue chip prospects in this draft, and he’s one of them.

He’ll be on the Heat or Celtics or something.

You know we’re only 5 games ahead of the 29th place Phoenix Suns?

Yep. Isn’t it great? We can really sink low if we continue to play shitty basketball.

It was a fun game to watch. It wasn’t a well-played game, but it was a fun game to watch. I mean, it was almost a quintuple overtime game! How can you not get a kick out of that?

I agree with JK47, don’t really get any joy out of wins at this point.

The last 4 games leading up to the deadline will likely decide this teams future. At home against the Clippers, Den, Spurs and on the road against OKC. I could see us being 11 games under .500 at that point.

He’ll be on the Heat or Celtics or something.

Don’t look now, but the Heat have won 7 in a row and are only 3 games behind us

Imagine if instead of opening up the vault for Derrick Rose we just signed Seth Curry…

We can really do this. One 3 team trade with OKC and LAC to move O’Quinn, Kuzminskas, Lee, and Melo and we’ll be top 5 in no time.

I didn’t see much of the game today but, wow, Melo has probably greatly increased his value today. This is heartening for all Knick fans, tankers and non-tankers alike.

@349

He was spectacular. On another plane of consciousness. He keeps that up we won’t lose many games but we’ll get a trade bonanza.

I’m reading that the Celtics may be back in the hunt in some way and that we had a scout at their game. I wonder if Kevin Love might be back in the mix from the Cavs? The Celtics have so many assets!

@351

Yeah, but the Celtics sites have them thinking Ainge will get Melo cheap and not for the Nets pick we want. That’s some bullshit.

I honestly believe that the Celtics don’t want Melo at all. But they would kill for Love. If the Cavs would take Melo plus Lee and/or Jennings for Love we would have the basis of a great three team deal here.

@353

Yes we would definitely get that pick from Boston or some other suitor in a three way trade. But the Cavaliers management doesn’t seem like they want to trade Love for Melo. Thankfully, we still have the Clippers being so desperate to seriously contend right now.

Melo plus Lee plus Jennings to LAC

Blake to Boston

Rivers, Brice Johnson, Boston #1 to NY

Would the Clippers and Celtics do it?

@355

That’s enticing. Its as good a deal as we can hope to get. The Celtics would definitely do it but I don’t see how the Clippers losing Griffin is going to make them any better. If they pull that deal it means Melo was on fiyah for a month of basketball and they’re at the bottom of the playoff race in the WC.
