2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks @ Nets

I don’t think even the most ardent supporter of the tank expects them to lose this game, as the Lin-less Nets are awwwwwwful.

But hey, ya never know! Still believe in the power of the tank and it might still surprise you!

Let’s go? Knicks!

  1. If the Knicks can figure out a way to lose this one (and it is very possible), the meltdown will be in full swing with almost no way to get out.

  2. I’ll be pounding beers and scouting Jonathan Isaac, but with the tank in spirit

  3. We need to lose this one for the tank, it would be so freakin’ awesome if we could lose to the worst team in the NBA…….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………

  4. You guys are such fans.

And you’re definitely not an automated spambot.

  5. Odds on Randy Foye having a career game? He is right up there with crumby guards that would be likely to light us up. The odds would be shorter if this were at MSG.

  6. The thing that’s kind of incredible about this Knicks team is that it has few truly horrible players. Even the worst players on the team are .050 WS48 type guys. There are a couple of guys who don’t get minutes like Lance and Sasha and Baker who have been very unproductive, but most of the guys who get major minutes are at least somewhat passable NBA players.

The problem they have nobody who is really that far above average, and a ton of guys who are just below average. This is such a balanced mediocre/bad roster.

  7. @15

not that great actually, but it’s something.

Kuz is playing too well, he needs to sit.

  8. There’s no way we’re not tanking if we’re running Sasha

  9. The first time all year that the Nets gave up less than 19 points in the first quarter.

  10. KP faking a three from the corner and then driving for an emphatic slam. All is not lost.

  11. I guess the key for the tank is that Phil Jackson has to first put together a team that he thinks can make the playoffs, then just hope that his incompetence leads to tanking glory.

  12. KP is not on board with the tank. Someone explain to him what it would be like playing with a good point guard…

  13. If we play Sasha every single minute for the rest of the season we can still finish second in the division.

  14. It’s time to take Sasha out he’s ruining the tank

Where’s Derrick and Lance when you need them most?

  15. Melo needs to “sprain his ankle” or develop a “hip pointer” or whatever it takes to get him out of there before he totally kills his trade value.

  16. Levert looks like he’s gonna be really good like the draft models said he would be

  17. Melo has to be better if his value is going to raise, come on… this might be a disaster win, a win with a terrible melo performance.

  18. Clyde: “I think that I could have an impact, Mike.”

Don’t stoop to playing with these guys, Clyde. You’re too good for that.

  19. I heard Waiters Island has a very liberal visa policy

  20. Quincy Acy is a Net?

Not only a Net, but he got a two-year deal from them! It was all to get closer to the salary floor, but still!

  21. What on earth are you guys worried about Melo for. After a bazillion minutes in the NBA you think the next 24 is going to make any difference in his perception around the league?

Horny… plz keep sasha, holiday, willy and kp as far from the floor as possible tonight

  22. I hope that Sasha is mentoring Baker some. He could learn a lot from him.

  23. What on earth are you guys worried about Melo for. After a bazillion minutes in the NBA you think the next 24 is going to make any difference in his perception around the league?

    Just joking around

  24. just overreacting cause there ain’t nothing to talk about what’s happening in the court, to be honest.

  25. Noah’s free throw shooting augments his overall game perfectly. Tank commander.

  26. Waiters and Dragic are destroying the Hawks too, how is this Miami team winning so much?

one less team for the lottery boys!!!

  27. This is going to be the worst loss of the season

Also how does KP manage to foul so much when he doesn’t even have to jump

  28. Guys..I know alot of us want the tank..but we are still Knicks fans, no? There is NO WAY IN HELL we should be losing to the Nets right now. But hey…bravo! We are managing to pull that off. This is when the season goes from the possible good fortune of a letdown to an embarrassment…a complete clusterfucky disaster of epic proportions.

  29. Melo is giving up on this team and waiving his NTC in slow motion tonight

  30. I can’t really understand how people can still root for Melo when he’s capable of games like this.

this is the epitome of why I’ll always hate this particular era of the Knicks.

the tank is literally the only joy I can take from this team, so that’s it.

  31. @76

then it’s his job to realize he’s got no legs and stop shooting, why does he have 22 shots when he’s “tired” and clearly not hitting anything?

  32. This is when the season goes from the possible good fortune of a letdown to an embarrassment…a complete clusterfucky disaster of epic proportions.

    Thanks, Phil!

I love the smell of losing in the morning…. you know that tankilicious smell…. it smells like…. victory!

  34. and the worst part of it all is that the Knicks might win this terrible fucking game.

  35. There’s no shame in winning.

Yes there is an incredible opportunity cost.

Please Horny sit willy and Holiday…. more Melo, Lee and Noah….

  36. Rooting against the Knicks in this game is like visiting a massage parlor…. you feel dirty and invigorated all at the same time…..

  37. Willy is really looking like a starting Center in the league.

and please bench Sasha, he’s doing too much.

  38. The good thing about this run is that this is the team I felt I could get behind from way back in that Wiz game a month ago (I think it was) when the second unit ran the court and shared the ball. Put a good PG with this crew and watch them win a lot of games. That was the game where I thought, yeah, burn it down, get rid of Melo, Lee, Rose, Jennings, bench Noah, load up with picks, watch this team become great in 2 or 3 years.

Feels like confirmation watching this now. SO MUCH BETTER THAN ISO MELO.

  39. I mean, Sasha still isn’t good, but he hustles and plays D. THAT’S ALL I’M ASKING FOR. I can root for that, win or lose.

Also, Willy’s supreme skill as an offensive force around the hoop, and KP’s potential as a game-changer on both sides of the floor.

For that matter, I hope we keep Holliday on a cheap contract – he’s a decent backup 2. Kuz, meh, but at least he hustles and tries to play within the team concept.

  40. this feels a lot like watching the nets lose to real madrid except there is no way in hell Brandon Jennings would make that team

  41. I agree kuz is fun and fine for the money but he is the kind of player who would get obliterated in the playoffs even against backups — he gets a lot of his offense off of opponent regular season laziness and he is not really an NBA defender

  42. I want them to lose here because they’ve already proved what they needed to prove (trade Melo etc), but that board and putback by Willy was just awesome.

  43. The old Jennings running off balance one hander off the top of the backboard for a Willy putback. Great play Horny.

  44. I am holding Horny personally responsible for this victory Willy 16 points 15 boards in 24 min

  45. The magic touch by KP.
Melo’s happy but he knows it’s not his team any more.

  46. Yikes – my heart was in my throat for a minute, expecting KP to dunk and come down on his back again. Phew.

  47. The Nets have obviously been given very specific tanking instructions.

  48. Melo’s happy but he knows it’s not his team any more.

I know his contract won’t allow it, but if Melo were to take an off the bench mentor role with the team I would be happy to have him around. I think he genuinely wants KP to do well, but unfortunately I don’t think that situation will happen. Lets just get some picks for him and move on. Give us yo picks Boston!!

  49. I can’t remember the last time I saw this many front of the rim brick shots. Three-pointers, mid range jumpers, free throws. These guys have been clanging the front of the rim all night long. They’ve got to be tired.

  50. KP really does look sick, though. And the players are so happy for the win, it shows how hard it is to tank for real. They want to compete and they like winning, that’s just how it is for anyone with enough work ethic and talent to get to this level. The only way to truly tank is to play Noah and Rose for as many minutes as possible.

  51. This one doesn’t really bug me because the odds were just too high that they would win the game. The Nets are just too, too bad.

  52. A win is fine Bob. Trade Melo and whatever it takes to get the Nets pick from Boston and “the Knicks are the beneficiaries.”

  53. Willy is freaking a awesome.
Offensively he has amazing post moves, good passer, and developing jumper.
He’s a freaking vacuum on the glass.
And defensively he just looks solid.

He honestly should be top 2-3 in ROY voting. Embiid and who else?

  54. Isn’t this more fun than losing?

You would honestly prefer to pick 16th rather than 5th and have the honor of being humiliated by Cleveland in 4 straight?

I’ve said it before, but it’s really up to the GM to tank. Very hard to ask players to not try and compete. Same for coaches as well, given their reputation is at stake as well.

  56. the worrying part is that Melo sucked, but meh, the Nets are so bad, this is an expected win.

the west teams coming up will be the real test of the tank armada.

  57. A win is fine Bob. Trade Melo and whatever it takes to get the Nets pick from Boston and “the Knicks are the beneficiaries.”

I am not sure how to enact the second clause in the second sentence. They win is costly just as the wins at the end of 2014 cost us likely the best player in the draft, Just fucking stupid.

  58. Idk if Embiid counts as a rookie technically

But Willy is a top 4 first year along with Embiid, Brogdon, and Juan Hernangomez

If Embiid doesn’t count Willy would be my choice for ROY and definitely so if he keeps this pace up

  59. Embiid will be considered a rookie for voting purposes as far as I know.

and yeah, every win hurts because this is the Knicks, history is not on our side, but there’s so many teams in the same situation that anything can happen really.

  60. The starters other than Porzingis were 11-42.

At least Jennings got some assists and steals, but that is ug-lee.

Bob, complaining that we didn’t lose to the worst team in the league in February…I don’t know what to tell you. If that upsets you, it’s going to be a tough couple months.

  61. I like how Trevor Booker torched us in the first half and then was promptly benched for the rest of the game like Atkinson and Davis wanted to tank so Boston could have a better pick

  62. Knicks should tell Boston that if they don’t trade the net Nets pick they will give the Nets Rose, O’Quinn, Jennings, and Kuz and let the Nets win every game remaining between the teams to ruin the pick.

  63. I agree that it was fun to watch a young, hungry, agile team out there plus Sasha who knows triangles. What more can one ask for?

  64. Bob, complaining that we didn’t lose to the worst team in the league in February…I don’t know what to tell you. If that upsets you, it’s going to be a tough couple months.

The only thing this win accomplished is making our draft position a little worse. Nothing else. We already know KP can play and Willy was a complete steal…. now maximize our draft position in this stacked draft and liquidate the older players for picks, plz…. we need to have a well thought out plan and execute it as well as possible.

There was nothing wrong with trying to assemble a decent playoff team with Melo, Rose, Lee, etc… but when that strategy obviously is full of fail, half assed, half measures is just folly.

  65. If we could just trade Melo we’d be better both short term and long term.I think we’re all wishing for that.

  66. Good thread folks.

Losing to the Nets is a lot to ask for but it would have been glorious. I am happy Porzingis gave a good account of himself at least and Wily’s line is impressive. He actually reminds me a little bit of DLee in his sophomore season, although Wily hasn’t shown that kind of ultra – efficiency yet.

I am sure the Knicks will tell him to start shooting jumpers next year and ruin him.

  67. So everyone got their rocks off winning a completely meaningless game tonight. Whoopie!

The 69-70 Knicks were assembled over 5 years of elite drafting. Cazzie (first overall) Bradley (2nd overall) Clyde (5th overall) Willis (gasp second round) Stallworth (5th overall) and 2 trades Dave D (for HOF Walt Bellamy #1 overall pick in 61 draft) and Dick Barnett ( traded for Bob Boozer#1 overall pick in 59)

You make great teams with high draft choices.

  68. I think everyone gets why the team needs to be losing, but I don’t think you can fault fans enjoying a win.

  69. You need to have an exceptionally high pain threshold to remain a Knicks fan. They’ve had losing seasons in 13 of the past 16 years, and almost all of those were POINTLESS losing seasons. You have to tip your hat in a way. It’s sort of a twisted kind of achievement to be that bad for that long yet still fail to ever parlay any of it into any kind of decent nucleus.

What will happen this year? The Knicks will probably hold onto their talent for too long, win a handful of meaningless games that redefine the term “Pyrrhic Victory,” then watch the teams 2 and 3 slots ahead of them in the draft select the Steph Currys and Karl-Anthony Townses of tomorrow, while the Knicks select a latter-day Channing Frye. It’s pre-ordained. I have seen this movie a million times.

The one thing you can count on from this franchise is that it will continue to fuck things up in the most irritating way humanly possible. You have to enjoy the team on that kind of level. Farce. Performance Art. Something like that.

  70. Has anyone ever made three 4 pt plays in one game? We need to get this for Sasha

I heard on ESPN that it was the first time in the league history that a player had two 4-point plays in the same game (I would easily say that Jamal Crawford had had multiple games like this, but nope). Good way to appear on the NBA records book, Sasha :)
