2014-15 Game Thread: Knicks @ Bulls

Remember the days when you’d be sort of pumped up to see the Knicks play another good team on a nationally televised game? It was just two years ago that the Knicks were in such a state. Heck, forget the legitimately good 2012-13 team, I was cool with the 2010-11 team, where we could at least sort of hope for a good game from the team. It’s a long ways away from the 1990s, where the Knicks could legitimately win every game they played, no matter who the opponent was, but it was something.

Now? Well, now I look to these matchups with good teams and say, “At least it’s an easy loss to help their chances for a good draft pick.”

Pragmatic? Of course.

Sad, though? I’d say yes.

Then again, Cole is starting tonight. Maybe they will surprise us (they won’t)!

  1. Six months ago, would have been hard pressed to name the sport, let alone the team, given the following information:

First possession turnover off of Travis Wear’s face.

  2. You could stick Calderon into a high school game and he would efficiently disappear. And also get beat off the dribble.

  3. I love how Barkley trashes the knicks. . . . He’s right!

Say what you want about the man, whether you like or dislike him…but when it comes to the Knicks, I agree. He’s not wrong. Poor Patrick Ewing

  4. Well, Charles is right, all people from NY want to talk about is how great the Knicks are.

    What a freakin’ a-hole.

  5. What a freakin’ a-hole.

Well…when you get upset when he says the Knicks suck, he’s kinda right.

  6. Cole with a jump/hook pass to no one. He must like the bench. Only Dalembert, Smith, and Amar’e can do things like that.

  7. @17 No, I get upset when he claims people from NY talk about how great the Knicks are, which no one does. Read my post.

  8. Shots fired!

    @PhilJackson11
do I have to mute this game? Chuck just remember your fundamental…key to ????

  9. Well, Charles is right, all people from NY want to talk about is how great the Knicks are.

    What a freakin’ a-hole.

Barkley tells it like it is. People think free agents are going to want to come here. Keep dreaming.

  10. It’s not like Shump could shut down Jimmy Butler, but holy shit are we completely helpless on the perimeter without him.

  11. Yeah, but Jimmy is awesome, so that’s not a big knock. This shooting would get you a first. He’s on fire from three against a team that does not like to let people get on fire from three.

  12. It better be that Cole is just so out of shape that he can’t play more minutes, or else Fisher is just being dumb here.

  13. I would have given Jimmy the max last year. Bulls fucked themselves on those negotiations

What they do with Jimmy will be fascinating. He’s clearly a max player, but do they do that? I think they will, because the cap is going up so they won’t be in the luxury tax for long.

  14. Part of it is that his options are so shitty, but boy, this game sure does look like it’s going to turn on how long Fisher left Prigs and the D-Squad out there while the game was getting out of hand.

  15. Cole got 11 points and 7 boards in 21 minutes against the Bulls. Garbage time production

It’s only against back of the bench guys like Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol.

  16. “Why can’t New York play like this every game?”

Maybe if they played their best center a little bit more…

  17. Holy shit, STAT, what the fuck were you doing!?!? And after an amazing shot by him, making it even more painful!

  18. It is just so Knicks that THJ got a cramp on that last possession and thus really couldn’t shoot.

  19. “Why can’t New York play like this every game?”

Maybe if they played their best center a little bit more…

Well it is not like they are not close like this in most of their other games and in their other games they usually have a defensive breakdown late

  20. “This is a good win by the Bulls”?!?!? Chuck, seriously? That didn’t even seem like he was trolling. He sounded like he really meant it!

  21. The only important development that came from this game is WE NEED TO PLAY COLE ALDRICH EVEN THOUGH WE ALREADY KNEW THAT.

  22. The only important development that came from this game is WE NEED TO PLAY COLE ALDRICH EVEN THOUGH WE ALREADY KNEW THAT.

    “We” didn’t include Fisher.

Also, Wear should play more if only because if they’re going to suck, shouldn’t they suck with a young guy who might actually be on the team in two years?

  23. Weird, Chuck and Miller should be lambasting the Bulls for allowing Knicks to be in this game, given how bad they feel this team is….

  24. You know, I was about to sort of give up on Cole because he had been kinda underwhelming when he actually got to play this season, and because he was fouling to the tune of 7.3 per 36 minutes. But this game is the first time he’s actually gotten to play real minutes all season, and there he is, 13 points on 8 FGA and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes. How’s about letting him play 25 minutes for the next 10 games or so and see what he can do?

Don’t look at the shot chart for this game, because it will make you cry. Most of the Bulls shots are from 3PT or in the paint. Most of the Knicks’ shots are 15-20 foot jumpers.

  25. Weird, Chuck and Miller should be lambasting the Bulls for allowing Knicks to be in this game, given how bad they feel this team is….

Yeah, that’s exactly why I was particularly irked to see Barkley call it a good win for them. I’m fine with him trolling the Knicks, but that was just plain dumb.

  26. In all fairness, this team plays really well in losses.

So what you’re saying is, the team plays really well all the time?

  27. I actually missed most of Cole’s breakout performance because I was busy watching the Duke game and making goo goo eyes at Jahlil.

  28. In all fairness, this team plays really well in losses.

So what you’re saying is, the team plays really well all the time?

I understand a team is only as good as it’s record. That, notwithstanding, they play really well in a lot of games, but have lapses. Still, they play just well enough to lose close games. They don’t know how to close. They don’t know how win.
If you watched this entire season without knowing the score of any of the games, you’d have to guess this team is at least .500. . . which is what they should be.

  29. Still, they play just well enough to lose close games. They don’t know how to close. They don’t know how win.

They don’t know how to defend. They’re 27th in the league in defensive rating. They’re the worst defensive rebounding team in the NBA, they foul incessantly and they’re one of the worst teams in the NBA at defending the three-point line. It’s not that they “don’t know how to win,” although that is true. The problem is that they flat out suck on defense. And the offense is below average too– in fact the Knicks are below average in all four of the Four Factors on offense.

This team is horrible in just about every facet of basketball, which is why they have a .179 winning percentage and are on pace to win about 15 games.

  30. Think about if we had drafted Jimmy Butler in 2011 instead of Shumpert. With all due respect to Shump, this team’s future would look a whole lot brighter. (And yes, I know, we would have traded him before he became a star)

  31. After watching GS v OKC (and GS v MEM, and MEM v SAS), I am thinking that they shouldn’t ever have a playoffs in the east. Just a western bracket, and whoever comes out of it is the champ. It’s like they are playing a different sport on that side of the Mississippi. One that is fun, beautiful, and thrilling.

  32. And to think that 34th St and 7th Avenue was once the mecca of basketball. Maybe in the 2056 Olympics, they’ll be talking about how the Europeans dominate basketball.
