As I tell Strat 5 or so days a week, if you speak vaguely enough any idea can sound reasonable.
In this context, being “not in favor of giving up on someone” means signing them to a contract. So to what contract would you sign Mudiay? He’s making $4.2M this year, does he deserve a raise?

Doncic had a night last night. And he only went 10-16 from the line. When he starts shooting 85% from the line rather than 74% he’ll really be cooking with gas.

If we were just worrying about Mudiay’s shooting and finishing, I’d be more apt to signing him and being patient with him. He has size, penetrates well, make plays, is not afraid and is improving. The problem is that he’s also a bad defender. Improving enough on both ends to become a good basketball player seems like a bit of a long shot. I would not pay much more than the kind of contract we are giving to Burke now. Both are NOT good basketball players. Even though Mudiay may be more likely to become one because he’s bigger and younger than Burke, unless we get either cheap, we’d be better off picking up someone else on the cheap as a filler backup next year.
IMO, Frank is definitely the better basketball prospect. He may not be the typical PG, but he’s younger than both of them and already a better defender. He may never have some of the handling and other offensive skills that Burke & Mudiay have, but Frank as a 3&D player that can be a secondary play maker is overall better than Mudiay or Burke is likely to be.
It may be more a matter of fit. The way this management is building the team, Frank may not have a role here. He might be better off helping a team oriented organization like the Spurs, Celtics, or Warriors win a future championship than having no good role on a team that’s tanking every year because it doesn’t value players correctly and plays an inefficient style.
I saw a weird poll on Twitter about who had the better stepback, Doncic or Harden. I mean, come on, Doncic is amazing. I love that guy, but Harden’s stepbacks are legendary. It’s not even close.
Lee is not hurting anything. He’ll probably be off the books before we are out of the lottery. The problem is Hardaway. He’s worse than Lee, makes significantly more, will be around longer, and management thinks he’s good.
As far as I can tell they aren’t even trying to move him because they don’t even know they should be.
Doncic’s got a bit of a mean streak, this is something most people who didn’t watch him at Europe will be surprised about. He’s very temperamental and emotional, which I’m sure will make up for a big media story one time when he blows up on a teammate or a coach when in fact it probably only means that he cares a lot about the game.
Why stop at just those teams? Let’s get every contender in on the Frank Ntilikina sweepstakes. No good team is crazy enough to pass up on the opportunity to add Frank Ntilikina. They all got to where they are now by stockpiling players like Frank Ntilikina.
In a more structured offense his TS% is a lock to go from .439 to .470 or so. Right now his BPM ranks 326th out of 342 players who have played 250+ MP, but in the right situation I could easily see him getting to 290th. Maybe even higher!
I wonder if Boston would consider including Tatum in a Ntilikina deal?
Honestly, not much of one. but for something like that or a little more I’d sign him. If some other team wants him for more, let him go. I was making a case he is a reasonable backup long term, nothing more.
If KP comes back and is healthy, Knox develops and we have Timmy, Ntilikina is probably better as the starter, because there will be enough scoring on the floor with him to let him be lousy on offense and still be ok.
You don’t think his $12M AAV salary comes with any opportunity cost? The Nets just got a first round pick for taking on one year of Kenneth Faried’s $13.7M salary.
Actually, you’ll have to excuse me as I forgot that Courtney Lee can be traded for a first round pick whenever we want.
I’m not arguing he’s a good overall player now. I’m arguing he’s almost half way there and still young enough to improve the other side by enough to become a solid player on a very good team that uses him correctly. I don’t think this team will be smart or patient enough to try to see that through or use him properly because they place too much value on shot creation and scoring. Other teams might.

I think given the direction we took under new management (which was to allow a few decent players to leave so we could bring in former lottery busts that still suck and accidentally tank even worse), Lee is a total waste on this team. The much graver error was using 20 million of cap space they were handed and giving it to Baker and Hardaway. Had they filled it competently (or rolled it over) and not made other mistakes, we might be good enough now to tempt a Durant or someone else like that to come here to fill out an already pretty good team.
But I’ve been saying this all along.
Rebuilding almost exclusively via draft instead of a combination of picks, free agents, trades, etc… is a 6-7 process IF you get LUCKY and IF you do it right. However, don’t expect any top free agents to come to your team until you are well into that process. We chose this path and executed it poorly.
I see why pundits would compare Doncic to Harden — they’re both “crafty” primary ball handlers with “questionable athleticism” who look for a stepback three or a layup, and can do either about thirty times a game if they want to.
But Doncic is 19, so it’s ridiculous to ask who’s better, even at a specific skill like stepvack 3d. Harden is the damn MVP and probably should play Rock Paper Scissors with Giannis for this year’s award. When we’re crowning Doncic league MVP in 2021 (which I’d probably bet on right now with decent odds), those hot-take artists can actually have the conversation in earnest.
Strat, if you took over the team in the summer of 2017 can you say specifically what you would have done? What team building method would have better utilized the skills of 32 year old Courtney Lee?

There is one thing I do believe in, even when I’m rational (and there is data to support this): bad players of a certain age can get good bc the age matters more than the number of minutes played.
Bad age 19 and 20 seasons don’t say as much about a player as bad age 23 and 24 seasons. Bargs was too old for anyone to have thought he could have become a better player by being used as a pick-and-pop specialist, and in retrospect I’m embarrassed I did the mental gymnastics required to believe that. But regardless of how many thousand minutes of terrible basketball he accumulates, I’m not writing off Frank until I see his age 21 and 22 seasons.
These are idiotic discussions because it’s impossible for me or anyone else to know who was available and willing to sign in NY at that time.
What I can tell you is that I would have signed you for 20m for 1 year over signing Hardaway to his deal. So if there was no one that I wanted willing to come, I’d get another look 1 year later.
So let’s say any free agent other than the top-15 players or so would’ve come to NY on the same contract they actually signed. Then who?

I’m still hoping that soon Knox, Robinson, Frank, and Trier can all play together a bunch. Of course they’ll suck, but just see what happens since all are under contract for next year. Work them with Dotson, Kornet or Vonleh.
If we’re actually trying to win the two best solutions would be to get Mitchell healthy and back on the court and to bench Knox, who is fucking terrible. But we should keep playing Knox and we absolutely should not be trying to win games. We should be losing with our young players and maybe giving some time to Courtney so we can at least try to trade him. Sit Timmy down with plantar fascitis for a while and play Dotson and Frank.

Honestly we should spend the rest of the year trying to get the kids on the team to learn how to make a fucking pass. Lee is the only wing player on the team averaging more assists than Luke Kornet. Dotson and Knox don’t passs at all and Trier is as likely to turn it over as he is to get an assist.
Again, these are nonsensical questions. If you were in management at the time, you’d know who was available and who would have considered coming to NY. We do not. There may have been better opportunities or there may not have. We do not know. What we can do is evaluate what they did. I am saying that what they did was so bad I would have signed “stratomatic” or “thenoblefacehumper” to a 1 year contract for 20m instead. If I did that, some people might call me an idiot for wasting time and space on a old “has been” like “stratomatic”, but given the available options that might have been the least bad move possible.

Whether it was intentional or not (and it wasn’t), we are “all in” on the double dip tank this year. So just play the kids and get some development out of them while we see what kind of pick we get this year. We would be in year 3 of the rebuild (1 year we had no 1st rounder), but the KP injury and some moves we’ve made, made us worse.
Year 1 – Porzingis
Year 2 – No Pick
Year 3 – Frank
Year 4 – Knox, Robinson, Trier
If we stay on the all draft path and get some development we should be good in 3-5 years. We can build quicker if we can get someone good to be crazy enough to sign here.
That only frees up an extra $5 million for the Knicks this offseason.

Frank is only a better prospect than Mudiay because he’s younger and hasn’t amassed as many execrably bad minutes as Mudiay. Neither of them are really “prospects” any more than any other random young point guards floating around as the 13-15th men on the rosters of crummy teams. Arguing about which of these guys is the better prospect is like arguing about which member of O-Town is going to have the best solo career.
You know exactly who the free agents were during this time. You know what contracts they signed. You know what trades were made. You know what picks were made. So on, so forth.
Which one of them should the Knicks have made instead of tanking? List a single one!

with a general target/aim accuracy of 10% in the game – i’m guessing though i’ve got other issues going on…just bought some joystick “extenders” for my ps4 controller off amazon – before today, i didn’t even know that was a thing…also, need to look at figuring out the sweet spot for adjusting my controller’s movement and aiming sensitivity…guess i’ll also be spending time watching some sypher vids…
playing since last spring – been playing more lately…not sure how it’s possible – but, i think i’m actually getting worse…that, coupled with watching my 7 year old godson get progressively better is causing me quiet a bit of angst…
