2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. 76ers

Here we go, if they lose, they are locked into the #6 seed. If they win, and the Timberwolves lose to the Houston Rockets (which is fairly likely), then they are tied for the #6 seed with Minnesota (and then they will split the #6 and #7 ping pong balls with Minny and then a coin toss will determine who is officially #6 and who is officially #7).

This will be a fascinating game. Let’s hope that either the Knicks lose or the Timberwolves win!

Let’s? Go Knicks!

I appreciate Z-man and Frank being upfront about their misapplied optimism. But my question: Where the fuck is ruruland?

    Let’s go tank!

  2. geo

someone asked me today if i was excited about the nba playoffs starting…explained a bit of the old knickerbocker storyline this season to them…

anyone have any teams they’re pulling for in the playoffs?

hard for me to root for anyone in the east, the wizards and hawks series could be interesting…low key would like to see the rockets make it out of the west…

  3. Hugo Busto

im a sicko who wants to see lebron dominate the finals again. i think the second round matchups in the east will be cool.

would like to see the heat make it, but seems extremely unlikely.

rooting for Jazz to beat the clippers as well

  4. Bruno Almeida

I like watching the Jazz and the Spurs play, so Im rooting for both… am also curious and excited to see the Bucks and how Giannis will fare.

  5. thenoblefacehumper

At least Philly has no reason to lose.

The Magic are actually favored against Detroit tonight. If they win and Philly loses, Philly gets 4 and the Magic get 5. They might have an even bigger incentive than us to lose, sadly.

I appreciate Z-man and Frank being upfront about their misapplied optimism. But my question: Where the fuck is ruruland?

I hope he’s trying to convince the few remaining basketball people on earth that think Melo is an above average basketball player to give up some kind of reasonable asset to trade for him.

  7. Brian Cronin Post author

I dunno, I don’t think ruruland owes us anything. If he wants to post, cool. If he doesn’t, then cool. I don’t think it’s fair to nail the guy in absentia.

  8. GoNyGoNyGo

The Nets are sitting 6 tonight vs Bulls who can make the playoffs with a win. Scum move of the year.

  9. geo

Optimism is never misapplied, It is only unrewarded.

not sure if it’s true – but, i sure like the way that sounds :-)

  10. stratomatic

Melo will go for 40 tonight just to put the final dagger in our hearts. #lottery #6thpick #antitankwhenweneedatank

If the Pacers miss the playoffs, the Nets get their second rounder (and if either the Bulls or Heat lose, the Pacers get in). So isn’t that just like all of these other teams trying to lose to help their draft status?

  12. geehee

The Nets are sitting 6 tonight vs Bulls who can make the playoffs with a win. Scum move of the year.

    100% Agree.

  13. JK47

Zack Wheeler is painting the corners with his slider right now and running his fastball to the plate at 96. That’s way more important to me than the result of the Tankball Championships.

  14. Hugo Busto

I wonder if they would be better off having the pick convey in the future when the Pacers wont have Paul George. Would probably be a decent 2nd rounder at that point

  15. #firePhilJackson

want to see Harden take it all the way to WCF with his no non-sense defense :)
want Lebron to lose ECF to any team – that will keep him humble

  16. GoNyGoNyGo

So isn’t that just like all of these other teams trying to lose to help their draft status?

Yep, it’s just the most egregious of many scum moves.

  17. Brian Cronin Post author

I was thinking about that, as well. I think that they figure that A. this is a deep draft and B. this is the first year that teams will have 17 roster spots, so they figure it is best to collect second rounders this year, since they’ll have the extra space.

But yes, it probably isn’t a big deal if they just get it in the future.

  18. Donnie Walsh

So, it’s all come down to this again, huh? (Rooting for ping pong balls seems to never get old for the Knicks).

  19. Donnie Walsh

Wait, the Nets are tanking for mid-second round draft positioning?? (Wow, that takes pathetic joke of a franchise to a whole new level. Great job 5 boroughs of NY!)

Quick question: where was this amazing long term planning when they traded all of their lottery picks for a couple of 40 year olds?

  21. Brian Cronin Post author

Quick question: where was this amazing long term planning when they traded all of their lottery picks for a couple of 40 year olds?

That was precisely why they hired a forward-thinking GM to replace their old dumb GM. :)

  22. Cock Jowles, The Nostradumbass Who Still Beat Your Weak Preseason Picks

If there were a year that LeBron gets taken out in the ECF, this is the year. If he has one bad series, the Cavs will fail. Deron Williams is going to get 20 playoff MPG for a Finals team? I think not.

  23. Brian Cronin Post author

I think the Wizards have a legit shot to make the Finals (and get destroyed, but still). They have an interesting mix of players. Otto Porter can light it up.

  24. Donnie Walsh

That was precisely why they hired a forward-thinking GM to replace their old dumb GM. :)

I’ll take your word for it, but whoever this cat is that they hired, he has such a deep freakin’ hole to dig out of, he MUST be better off trying to actually win a game when the league is actually paying attention to him (aka, playoff implications)… “resting” players to secure ping pong balls is one thing, but to secure the 45th pick? That should be below any professional sports franchise. (At least Brook Lopez will be well rested for training camp 6 months from now, I guess).

  25. DRed

Wait, the Nets are tanking for mid-second round draft positioning?? (Wow, that takes pathetic joke of a franchise to a whole new level. Great job 5 boroughs of NY!)

The Nets actually tried to win this year, at least as much as they could, but why should they try to win tonight when it hurts their team?

  26. MSA

Wait, the Nets are tanking for mid-second round draft positioning?? (Wow, that takes pathetic joke of a franchise to a whole new level. Great job 5 boroughs of NY!)

Nets have 2 first round picks and 2nd (with the Pacers pick) this year.

Losing the first overall sucks but with the new GM the are slowly getting back on track.

I would bet that they will right the ship before us.

  27. Hugo Busto

I like the Raptors chances more than the Wiz IF Kyle Lowry is healthy.. PJ Tucker and Ibaka were great additions for their push.
I can’t really see the Celtics beating the Cavs, Wiz would have more of shot imo.
Definitely not a guarantee Cavs make it but favorites to do so

  28. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

Before it gets too late, I’d like to thank all of our players, coaches and management for a very entertaining season. Well done!

  29. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

Some of you may not be back but they can never take away the great bond that we formed.

  30. geo

Wait, the Nets are tanking for mid-second round draft positioning?? (Wow, that takes pathetic joke of a franchise to a whole new level. Great job 5 boroughs of NY!)

well, when you say it like that – it certainly doesn’t seem like that great a move…

  31. geo

Some of you may not be back but they can never take away the great bond that we formed.

Don’t bogart that joint my friend,
    Pass it over to me!

  32. thenoblefacehumper

Before it gets too late, I’d like to thank all of our players, coaches and management for a very entertaining season. Well done!

Not even exaggerating, I think this was the most miserable Knicks season I can remember. At least 2014-2015 had Bargnani.gifs to keep us going.

  33. Z-man

Wheeler loads the bases and Robles gives up the grand slam. So much for a relaxing baseball night.

  34. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

    The Garden is full tonight.
    The fans are all abuzz.
They can smell greatness in the air.
    It’s coming.

  35. stratomatic

I don’t think the Celtics have any chance to get to the finals. All you have to do is game plan to stop Isiah Thomas and they are done. They could go out in the second round.

I haven’t been much of a Raptor fan, but Ibaka and Tucker added some defense and depth. If Lowery can get to peak form they have a shot of beating the Cavs.

Washington is also OK, but I don’t think they are as good as a fully healthy Toronto.

  36. Philmelo

Anyone who thinks Melo will be a Knick after this game is clueless. This is such a final hurrah type game.

  37. stratomatic

Anyone who thinks Melo will be a Knick after this game is clueless. This is such a final hurrah type game.

The fact that he played tonight leads one to think that, but you still have to find a team that wants him, where he’s willing to play, and that’s willing to give us a minimum of expiring contracts.

  38. dtrickey

Pacers, Bulls and Heat both with comfortable leads in their games. Looks like that last spot in the east will be tight. So much for the nets tanking in the hopes of an Indiana loss.

  39. thenoblefacehumper

It’s quite possible that both Melo and the Knicks’ front office will want to part but won’t be able to make it work

  40. Philmelo

Wow, Mike and Clyde are really laying their cards on the table. Phil and Melo are getting thrown under the bus.

  41. JK47

Wheeler loads the bases and Robles gives up the grand slam. So much for a relaxing baseball night.

Wheeler looked real good for five innings though. Night and day difference from his first start.

  42. geo

Clyde just used the word “bogarting”…wonder if ‘ol walt is 420 friendly…

remember growing up listening to phil and bill calling yanks games – channel 11, wpix :-)…i think clyde and mike might just be my second favorite team all time…

  43. geo

ya gotta think melo has a strong feeling this could be his last game ras…

it’ll be interesting to see how big an affect, if any, the brooklyn situation will have…it’s going to get a lot of play in the media…

  44. djphan

i think melo to the wiz might happen… i think that’s the most logical destination atm…

securing the 6th slot is huge… it gives us a great chance at one of the pgs…

  45. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

Horny with what might be his best substitution of the year sitting OQuinn for Plumlee.

  46. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

    Who else should be back?
O’Quinn, Justin, Courtney, Ron, Maurice, Marshall, Kuz, obviously Willy and KP. That’s ten, which leaves us plenty of room for newcomers.

  47. Z-man

The only thing I can see as a positive is that the fans who actually paid for tickets are rooting for a win, and sadly, I have to defer to them, misguided as they may be.

  48. JK47

The Knicks are just a perfect storm. They’re the most exquisitely annoying team to root for. You just can’t make shit like this up.

  49. JK47

There it is: the meaningless Maurice Ndour jumper that goes in.

All that’s left now is for the team one slot ahead of us to win the lottery.

  50. DRed

Love that even Mike Breen seems to want Knicks to lose.

That’s because only a child or a troll would be rooting for them to win.

  51. Philmelo

LOL, this is such a Knicksian game. A meaningless win cheered on by an arena full of morons that our GM is secretly hoping we lose.

  52. rama

I don’t know what we could have done. The last few baskets were Holliday, Plumlee, Baker, and NDour. I mean, we didn’t have any lower to go.

  53. JK47

“With the first pick in the 2017 NBA draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select Markelle Fultz…”

  54. djphan

well if minny or us doesn’t jump into the top 3 then it’s a coin flip…. which i guess if we win no harm no foul… but ugh….

  55. MSA

I don’t know what we could have done. The last few baskets were Holliday, Plumlee, Baker, and NDour. I mean, we didn’t have any lower to go.

    Plumlee didn’t shot any 3!

    Splitter had 3, Madsen 7!

    That’s how you tank…

  56. Z-man

Well, as Mary Chestnut wrote after the burning of Atlanta, “That agony is over…no hope, we will try to have no fear.”

  57. Silky Johnson, Fleet Admiral of the Tank Armada

So does Plumlee or Holiday get this year’s Tim Hardaway Jr. Award for fucking up the tank?

  58. DRed

I don’t know what we could have done. The last few baskets were Holliday, Plumlee, Baker, and NDour. I mean, we didn’t have any lower to go.

Call time out-remind your players that they should not make a fucking basket and Uncle Jimmy will find a way to make them good on the hush hush. It’s not complicated.

  59. thenoblefacehumper

There’s a perfectly feasible situation in which we’re choosing between Ntilikina, Monk, and Tatum.

And that’s assuming no one jumps us.

  60. dtrickey

In fairness, we were trying to out tank the team that wrote the book on it. Plus who would have picked a career night for Plumlee? Super frustrating outcome, but we aren’t out of that 6th seed yet. Having flashes of TH2 all over again though is giving me a migraine.

Also, not going to lambast the fans at MSG who spent hard earned cash to enjoy themselves at the basketball. Yes we should have lost, but us KB’s are a different type of fan from those who just want to enjoy watching their team win. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

  61. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

This win will have no bearing on the draft for us. We’re 6.5 instead of 6. Deal with it. We won!

  62. Z-man

Really, there is nothing more they could have done. If you want to blame this on something, think of beating the Bulls and Heat, who actually had a reason to win. The game came down to a Ndour fallaway 15-footer.

  63. JK47

This isn’t basketball, this is performance art. The sheer regularity with which the Sisyphean boulder continues to come crashing down on us fans is just remarkable.

  64. GoNyGoNyGo

This team is rotten to the core. When you have men like Dolan and Jackson at the top, it trickles down.

  65. DRed

All they had to do was not make a couple baskets, but you know, there was nothing they could do.

  66. chrisconley

    1. That Ndour shot was so ugly. Terrible shot.

    2. Really Houston? An 8 man playoff rotation instead of resting up? Westbrook is even resting. They’re that worried about Hardens MVP? He will definitely win. No MVP has ever come from anywhere near as low as a 6 seed. Rest your fucking players! I hope the thunder beat them.

  67. Philmelo

BTW, the morons cheering this win perfectly embody the stupid cluelessness of the Knicks fanbase. Leslie Jones celebrating like a blithering idiot as if we won game 7 of the NBA Finals captures everything I loathe about the dummies who pay to watch this farce.

  68. dtrickey

Really, there is nothing more they could have done. If you want to blame this on something, think of beating the Bulls and Heat, who actually had a reason to win. The game came down to a Ndour fallaway 15-footer.

I would be happy to bet against an N’dour jumper going in everytime.

Every franchise in sports has those fans. Fans who think as in depth about the game as people on this blog do are in the minority I have found. Should they realise a loss was way more valuable? Probably. That said, I don’t think you can slam the average joe for enjoying a win. That’s why we have this blog to vent.

  71. Brian Cronin Post author

    when does the cointoss happen?

I believe it actually happens very soon. Like, as in tomorrow or Friday.

  72. TheOakmanCometh

It’s not all about the coin flip. That only breaks the tie if neither team moves up. But that Ndour shot already reduced our chance at a Top 3 pick by 15%.

  73. chrisconley

I don’t blame fans that root for a win. It’s not their fault. I’m actually glad some folks are getting joy from this team. They just have different values than most on this site. And that’s ok. A short term victory is more important than an additional 6% shot at a top spot to them. They might regret it later, but they might not. I was pissed when we dropped to 4 two years ago but I’m thankful now that we don’t have okafor.

  74. JK47

Mathematics tells me that the Knicks have a 50% chance of winning the coin flip.
Life itself tells me that the Knicks have a 0% chance of winning the coin flip.

  76. Philmelo

I blame every fan who pays money to watch this monstrosity. Every red cent they contribute only keeps it functioning in perennial sub-mediocrity.

  77. Hugo Busto

    Phil and MAgic Johnson.

cant believe the lakers have won so many in a row.

i pray that they fall out of the top 3 and lose two first rounders just for the lols

  78. Cock Jowles, The Nostradumbass Who Still Beat Your Weak Preseason Picks

I blame every fan who pays money to watch this monstrosity. Every red cent they contribute only keeps it functioning in perennial sub-mediocrity.

Knicks were #4 in attendance (total, not %) in 2014-15. It’s NYC. People are going to go to the game.

  79. Brian Cronin Post author

i pray that they fall out of the top 3 and lose two first rounders just for the lols

It kills me that I can’t root for that to happen, because it would help the Sixers so much. There’s a very good chance that they end up with a Top 3 pick and then also the #4 pick!! That would be bad for the Knicks, so I have to root for the Lakers to end up in the Top 3.

  80. chrisconley

No, I don’t think it’s about self control. I think some Knicks fans just prefer one marshmallow now. Is that objectively worse? I’m a pretty miserable Knicks fan that wishes I found joy in that win. I don’t get satisfaction any more by “knowing” im superior to dumb knick fans.

  81. Early Bird

The 76ers have spent the last few years perfecting losing, we just do it by accident. Of course we won.

  82. chrisconley

@Philmelo. You make a really good point. Market forces can’t do their job if fans line up to overpay for an inferior product. I take back my defense of dumb knick fans. Its hurting my experience.

  83. Brian Cronin Post author

There’s people who loved Return of the Jedi for the Ewoks. If fans want to enjoy a win even if it hurts the franchise long term, I have no problem with it. It’s when that sort of mentality drives the front office that I have a problem with it.

And as Jowles noted, the Knicks are gonna sell tickets. It’s New York City and it’s Midtown. They will sell tickets.

  84. TheOakmanCometh

Dolan’s basketball monopoly is as ironclad as his cable monopoly. Fans will keep showing up at the Garden and pouring money into his pockets no matter how ineptly the franchise is run.

  85. Early Bird

Ironically, being in the “best market” results in the worst product. There’s a handful of informed fans and 20 million people who don’t know or don’t care.

  86. Philmelo

Which, to further develop your Star Wars analogy, is the reason we got Jar Jar Bink. Morons bought those teddy bears as merchandise and Lucas went nuts the next time around.

Yep, pretty much. The franchise’s value has increased dramatically since he took over the team. Ugh.

  88. TheOakmanCometh

Just get Melo out of here. I don’t know what I’ll do if he starts another season on this team. I’m so disgusted with this god damn franchise right now.

Can’t win right. Can’t lose right. Can’t do anything right.

  89. Brian Cronin Post author

Which, to further develop your Star Wars analogy, is the reason we got Jar Jar Bink. Morons bought those teddy bears as merchandise and Lucas went nuts the next time around.

Oh sure, definitely. That’s where the problem comes from. When Lucas/the front office does things with that mentality. They’re supposed to be smarter than the dumb fans.

  90. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

It’s sour grapes on your part. Those fans are joyous and happy. Look at you.

There’s at least a chance that he will actually leave! Hold on to that chance as long as you can!

  92. djphan

i actually don’t think it’s too bad… i think the priority was getting one of the top 3 pg’s… and if minny jumps ahead of us for 6 i doubt they pick a pg…. altho if they did it would suck…

if the sixers grab the lakers pick i think that’s actually good for us since i’m pretty sure they pick monk with one of their picks…

assuming the teams don’t change orders in front of us if we want a chance at ball, smith or fox then we’ll need one out of the sixers, magic, or lakers passing up a pg… which could happen..

  93. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

Melo will agree to leave tomorrow at his exit meeting. But will anyone want him?

  94. thenoblefacehumper

If Isaac is on the board when the Wolves pick I’m fairly certain they’ll take him. That sucks, because it removes one more outcome I’d be very happy with for the Knicks. It’s pretty much the main reason I wanted to fall behind them. Alas, we are not allowed to have nice things.

  95. dtrickey

i actually don’t think it’s too bad… i think the priority was getting one of the top 3 pg’s… and if minny jumps ahead of us for 6 i doubt they pick a pg…. altho if they did it would suck

Let’s not forget the Ricky Rubio/Johnny Flynn draft debacle. Wouldn’t put it past the Wolves.

  96. Z-man

A while ago when we first went into tank mode, I predicted 32 wins. We won only 31, so on balance, things wound up better than I had expected. Point of interest: we went 2-2 vs. the Sixers, and all 4 games came down to a final possession, and were decided by a total of 6 points. The Sixers are not the reason we might not picking in the top 6.

  97. Z-man

Also, let’s be thankful that Sacramento figured out a way to beat Phoenix last night. Otherwise it might have been a 3-way tie.

  98. Z-man

I like that you get his name right each time. :)

Hard to believe it’s so hard for some. I mean, it’s not Antetokounmpo or anything.

    (btw…I misspelled Mary Chesnut‘s name)

  99. djphan

i think as long as we don’t move down to #8 we are fine … there are 7 great prospects in this draft…

  100. JK47

i think as long as we don’t move down to #8 we are fine … there are 7 great prospects in this draft…

Lose the coin flip, then have one team pass us in the lotto, and VOILA! There’s your #8 pick.

    #BecauseKnicks

  101. djphan

well i’m not all THAT worried because i’m sure someone falls in love with monk or somebody and nba gms are dumb… i just hope that dumb gm isn’t phil…

  102. Bruno Almeida

this went… well, exactly as I expected.

the Knicks manage to potentially fuck up their future a little bit more.

this is honestly reaching “will we ever stop tripping on ourselves?” levels.

pray for the lotto is all that remains…

  103. Silky Johnson, Fleet Admiral of the Tank Armada

I still think there’s a decent chance we get Fox if we stay at 6. With Simmons playing PG and Hinkie out of town I think Philly’s going to be drafting for need after getting what seems like a poor return for Noel. Payton playing better for Orlando also helps our chances. It’s basically a coin flip whether or not Orlando wants Tatum or Fox imo.

    I think it goes:
    Boston Fultz
    Phoenix Ball
    Lakers Jackson
    76ers Monk
    Magic Tatum
Knicks Fox (Frank if Fox is taken)
    Minnesota Isaac

If we come out with Fox, I’m very happy. Still would be happy with Frank or Isaac (which I think are p much guaranteed for us unless we pick at 8.) Would be ecstatic with Ball/Fultz/Jackson in that order.

  104. Bruno Almeida

I’m not even scared that the Knicks won’t be able to draft a good prospect, it’s very likely they will be able to choose at least between Ntilikina or Isaac.

it’s the fact that these fucking stupid irritating wins take away ping pong balls from a potential lucky break, which would probably never happen anyway because Knicks.

  105. Donnie Walsh

i think as long as we don’t move down to #8 we are fine … there are 7 great prospects in this draft…

Last time we ended up with #8, Steph Curry went #7…

  106. nicos

My worry is Phil thinks Melo’s going to go and drafts Tatum (which is bad enough already) and then Melo does an about face and refuses to waive his no-trade clause.

  107. Reub On Our Way To Greatness

There are more than 8 great prospects in this draft. I’d really like 2 of them.

  108. Grocer

And as Jowles noted, the Knicks are gonna sell tickets. It’s New York City and it’s Midtown. They will sell tickets.
