Rooting for KAT to empty his clip so that he can emotionally process that he’s worth less at 33 than he was at 29 & sign this extension. Lets GO!!!!
So according to Stefan Bondy (credit to Heavy’s Jayesh Pagar) Leon is trying to move Dadiet but “he has no value” and one can infer that Leon seems reluctant to attach draft capital to dump him.
Seems like a very likely outcome heading into the season is that Leon will relent and attach a second or two to dump him and then will sign two of the vets in camp plus Nickel to a rookie minimum deal. That would give him the leverage to work out a trade for a higher priced player prior to the February trade deadline when whoever he signs now becomes trade eligible.
Slow Friday (both here and at work) so I had my quant (“my quantitative!”) run Noble’s draft analysis with 82 game average VORP instead of cumulative VORP to negate the time bias.
The Knicks end up 15th with a mean 82-game VORP of .237.
They have a median 82-game of 0.00, so half of their picks have added value. That puts them in a 6-way tie for tenth. That’s pretty good, considering where they’ve drafted.
Nothing suggests they discovered a market inefficiency. But there is plenty of evidence that Immanuel Quickley is one of the best picks any front office has made this decade.
You know who has discovered something? The Miami Heat.
They rank 4th with just 6 picks between 15 & 44: Precious, Jovic, Jacques, Ware, Larsson, Jakucionis. And that doesn’t even count the 30+ VORP they got from Herro and Bam before the 2020 cutoff.
Hubert, that’s very interesting. I stand corrected, maybe Leon and his team are not as bad as I thought at drafting.
Love that you have your quant do Knicksy quant stuff on a slow Friday to keep the office busy. Instant classic Knickerblogger only post.
Was skimming thru some of the best games in the Leon Rose era on KFS and one crazy stat they mentioned during the Bridges game winner episode was last season 19 times a Knicks player played 40 mins during the regular season, the prior season it happened 99 times!
I have always felt that Leon & Co.’s approach to the draft was solid, but not spectacular. Their biggest blunder was taking Obi over Hali, something we all knew was a blunder at the time. But it seems like, as was pointed out yesterday, they were disproportionately focused on three things in a unique (and sometimes frustrating for fans looking for the jackpot pick) way: 1) cap considerations (e.g. later vs. earlier in the same draft, using picks to facilitate salary dumps), 2) drafting for high-floor over high-ceiling, 3) rolling over and stockpiling 2nds.
You could also say that they have been hyperfocused on a subset of players that they theoretically would pick at a given slot, but if they felt would be available later, would trade down and then draft the player. And if someone swooped in and took that coveted player, they would simply trade out and chase the next “value” guy who they felt was being overlooked. This tendency has been most frustrating to some folks here, who strongly felt that you don’t sacrifice draft position unless you get top dollar for doing so, which obviously has not been true in many cases.
In retrospect, one can quibble with specifics, but the overall grade of “solid but not spectacular” is, and has always been, the best way to characterize things. And I would suspect that had Haliburton been the pick instead of Obi, the VORP calculation would have moved the draft outcomes up the board. But it’s impossible to determine how reversing that early blunder would have panned out. We’ll just have to accept that all’s well that ends well.
If we draft Hali do we go after Brunson?
I think the biggest reason there’s a difference between this result and our perception is that we count all the picks they punted.
This is really “how good were the players they drafted.” Whereas someone like me was fixated on the players they didn’t think were worth drafting. There’s no ding in this analysis for letting OKC and PHX take Ajay Mitchell and Osh Ighodaro with your picks. It essentially never happened.
And there’s also some recency bias. We had the 3rd best rank in 2020 (close enough for a virtual tie for first). We were 14th in 2021. We probably don’t give them enough credit for that.
Swifty, that’s the rub. I think they do anyway due to the family ties and simple valuation. And I think it would work, just differently.
Anyway, now that I am a certified Hali Hater, it’s sort of poetic that the guy I really wanted Leon to draft, and who evolved into Reggie 2.0 and was instrumental in ending our last two playoff runs in excruciating fashion, was three-quarters of a remarkable game 7 upset over OKC from theoretically becoming as close to the national media darling that Brunson has become as one can get in a small market like Indiana. That our very own Captain Clutch has usurped that throne from him in the bitterest fashion possible really tickles my fancy. He’ll never live down that choke sign BS he pulled, as far as I’m concerned. Hearing how he and his shit-eating grin had to turn away from the TV in agony when the Knicks were being propelled to the promised land he came so close to really warmed my heart.
That’s why I wanted the NBA to have them in town for the ring ceremony. I hope someone in the front row at the next IND-NYK game at MSG wears a tee-shirt with a picture of the Knicks’ championship ring (or Brunson’s MVP trophy) with the caption “HEY HALI, CHOKE ON THIS!”
And look, just everyone who hated the Mikal trade says they’ve been vindicated by the title, I’m saying the same thing about this (even though I would love to have both those guys right now!)
Conventional wisdom, which I was firmly and loudly touting, suggests you must take swings in the draft. Just like it used to suggest you steal bases and sacrifice outs to move runners over.
Our front office determined that 29 other teams were underestimating the cost of swinging. And I thought that was fucking nuts. But it was borne out in the results.
Ironically the one time they swung is proving how they right they were about the cost of swinging: Pacome Dadiet has been wasting space for three years, and he’s preventing from us going to what they discovered is a much better well of market inefficiency than the draft: the vet min market.
It’s not as revolutionary as moneyball because it’s not like drafting players is bad. 29 other teams aren’t going to copy this and we’re not going to have a draft where nobody gets picked. But they did invent a new way to skin a cat.
“There’s no ding in this analysis for letting OKC and PHX take Ajay Mitchell and Osh Ighodaro with your picks.”
Each of the trade-downs brought something of value back in return. As I have continually pointed out, if Leon had just drafted Deuce (rumored to be the guy at #19) and Grimes with #19 and #21 without any trade-downs, no one would have made much of it in retrospect, since both turned into solid NBA rotation players and that’s a good outcome for those two slots. Yet they came away from the draft with those two, plus additional stuff (additional picks and substantial additional cap space) and you would have think they committed murder for doing so because they only got 80 cents on a dollar vs. $1.20. It was silly at the time, continues to be silly, and will always be silly. And what makes it even sillier is that the $1.20 on a dollar trades they made with the picks are ignored, as is the pining over players passed over that turned out to be utter scrubs. (Bones Hyland ring a bell? Keon Johnson?)
If folks can’t own up to being dead wrong about Leon “sucking at the draft” by now, it will probably never happen no matter if the analysis suggests that “solid but not spectacular” fits best.
Is the reason you’re named after the final letter because you’re the end of every pleasant conversation?
Fuck off and go to therapy already you old miserable cunt.
(Sorry, Doogie, in this case there’s no other word.)
I don’t think the Mikal Bridges trade can be compared in any way, shape, or form to any of the individual draft-day moves. There is a gaping chasm between selling a pick at a modest discount but getting more out of the draft that you went in with in a situation that is a crap shoot to begin with, than trading all of your tradable draft capital, i.e. five unprotected first round picks over seven years, for a non-all-star. That is a substantially higher price than was paid for either OG or KAT (unless someone thinks that RJ+IQ was worth 4 unprotected firsts, or that Randle+DDV were worth 4 unprotected firsts.) Our second apron problem wouldn’t be as extreme if we still had a couple of picks to burn.
But where the comparison is valid is in the underappreciation for Mikal. He is a very good player, certainly worth 2 or 3 firsts, yet he has been trashed here as the equivalent of a journeyman bum, with the crescendo being after game 3 vs. Atlanta. It’s one thing to say (fairly, imho) that it was a substantial overpay, and another to say that he’s a washed-up scrub.
It’s also the case that, like with the draft, the wins in trades and free agency outweigh the losses. The overpay for Mikal is balanced out by the vast underpays for Brunson, KAT, and to a lesser degree, Hart and OG. That they were able to pull off the KAT trade after dealing all of those picks for Mikal is second to only the Brunson maneuver in terms of importance in the march to a championship.
“Is the reason you’re named after the final letter because you’re the end of every pleasant conversation?

(Sorry, Doogie, in this case there’s no other word.)”
This is funny, considering that we’re mostly talking about the many raging tantrums you have thrown over the course of the Leon era. Where were those pleasant conversations prior to the championship, when you were incinerating thread after thread with you stupid, angry hot takes?
BPM is just the rate adjusted version of VORP, but I don’t like using it for this kind of thing because picks who played a negligible number of minutes can have extraordinarily high or low figures that skew everything badly. VORP/82 games will suffer from the same thing, since it’s just a Gerry rigged BPM. You need a minutes threshold at a minimum if you’re going to do it that way.
The Mikal we got from midway through the ATL series till the last game of the Finals was worth the pick cost. The Mikal we’ve gotten the rest of the time has not been.
You could theoretically account for the picks used in the analysis, discounting value from higher picks because of their higher expected value. There are pros and cons to that approach—you solve the “Wemby problem” of teams lucky enough to win the lottery in a no-brainer year grading out as drafting savants, but you also ding teams who made bold picks at high slots unfairly.
I think there’s a lot to be said for simply ranking every team’s total draft production over a period of time and using your own qualitative knowledge to make the necessary mental adjustments.
It’s also true that my approach doesn’t punish bad trade downs and the like, but it’s not really supposed to. It’s supposed to evaluate how good the players teams did draft are, and again, there’s nothing stopping anyone from keeping in mind trades in coming to a holistic view about a given team’s draft approach.
We also get some weird results from a guy like Trevor Keels who has a 0 VORP because he only played 8 minutes for us. He had a -13BPM.
The other issue is that teams who have made more picks in recent years are adversely affected compared to teams who made more picks 5 years ago since their young players haven’t had as much time to improve.
Still, it’s an interesting idea. Thanks for having your quant run the numbers.
I just got caught up on the last few days of threads and only have one question: what happened to the major project you have to start?
He probably started it already before today.
He’s having the quant do that too
The cost of the Mikal trade was probably less for this front office than for any of the others around the Association, once you account for the very likely possibility that Leon & Co. would have used few, if any, of those first round picks to, y’know, actually pick players in the first round.
Has Mikal been worth more than the combined pu pu platter of 2nd rounders, draft ‘n’ stashes, and cash considerations those five picks would likely have been converted to on draft day? That’s the lens through which the true cost of the trade should be evaluated.
Leon repurposed just about every draft pick he acquired upon taking over as POBO. I believe that every player on the championship roster except Mitch and Dadiet involved an initial pick being repurposed by Leon et. al. in some way, either as a trade-down (e.g. Kolek, Mo) or creating cap space (e.g. Brunson) or to trade for players, either as draft capital or former picks made that developed (e.g. IQ). Following the continuum and evaluating it in comparison to what other franchises did with their picks seems pretty complicated. But I appreciate the efforts concerning the picks actually made.
The lens through which the Bridges trade should be evaluated is the fact that he was an important player on a team that won the freaking NBA championship.
Fuck dem picks.
Unrelated/related topic.
If worst case scenario comes to pass and KAT and Leon can’t get on the same page, what would you do?
Do you trade KAT as soon as possible to try and repivot the team and move on? Do you ride him out for this full season in the hopes you win another title with him before he bolts (hopefully doing a sign and trade in the summer)?
And if he is traded, do you trade another one of the core guys to in order to really do a reset or do you hope you just get a good haul of useful guys for KAT and re-tool a team that doesn’t quite have the top end talent and your chances of winning a title are diminished but maybe your bench and picks are replenished a bit and you extend the window of this team being “very good.”
So far, the Nets have acquired Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf with two of the 5 picks, with 2027, 2029, and 2031 left to pick. There’s a pretty high probability that the 2027 pick will be well outside the top-20.
The Knicks also gave zero value in players back to the Nets, and actually negative value, since they dumped Bojan’s virtually worthless $20M in salary, which would probably cost at least a heavily protected first in a vacuum, let’s say the 2027 pick.
So the “functional” cost of acquiring Mikal (with the assumption that the Knicks would have acquired the same players in the draft) is Traore (or a top-18 protected pick), Saraf (or a top-25 protected pick), and the 2029 and 2031 picks. I would guess that there is a better than 50-50 chance that the 2029 pick conveys outside the lottery as well.
Seems like squinting thusly makes it seem less onerous, more like a slight overpay at worst.
Swifty, I think you ride KAT out for the season rather than trade him at the deadline (unless it’s an absolute home run, of course.) If he opts out and accepts a substantially higher offer in free agency (meaning something over $55M AAV) then at least you got three prime years out of him. But maybe he compromises then rather than now, especially if the offers are from teams with not much upside in his remaining prime and/or in places he’d rather not relocate to.
You need to go to confession for that one my friend, but that doesn’t mean I’m not putting it in my rolodex for future reference. 🙂
Z-Man you’ve had as many stupid takes as anyone. You’re just the only one keeping score since Jowles left to get a deep v and glutes of steel.
No one brings up your stupid takes because there is no bigger L in the world than coming to the comments section with bookmarked threads from years ago and a scorecard of everything everyone else has been wrong about.
The least surprising thing in the world is that you have gout. Your whole persona is a buildup of uric acid, and I’m like the 8th person to go off on you this summer. How many people have to tell you you’re toxic before you get the message?
This is why I thought both total VORP and VORP per draftee were relevant. The total figure doesn’t punish Leon for Keels, but he’s a denominator in the per draftee one.
All things considered, I think the 5th (per draftee) and 8th (total) rankings are a better measurement of Leon’s body of work than the VORP/game figure of 15th, but it’s also fair to say that the trade downs, notable misses, etc. push him out of the top 10.
What an incredibly weird way to learn that Jowles left KB some time ago…
The Nets’ kids should look much better in year 2 with actual adults on the team.
That was the “time bias” I was trying to solve for.
I don’t think my method was any more complete than Noble’s, and the Keels issue is valid, too.
I just figured you can’t look at something like this and determine we drafted better than Portland:
Obi Toppin – 5.4 VORP (6 seasons)
Donovan Clingan – 3.2 VORP (2 seasons)
Overall I think a negative characterization of Leon’s draft chops is still pretty fair. That’s not something I think I got wrong.
What I did get wrong (and I wrote this earlier) is how much weight I assigned to his negative draft chops. I gave it the biggest weight in my assessment of him. It should have had the lowest.
If I were looking at this from Leon’s POV, I wouldn’t say “actually I’ve been good at the draft.” I’d say “I successfully identified that I could get more value from guys like Cam Payne and Landry Shamet and Jordan Clarkson than I could from draft picks and I valued my roster spots accordingly.”
What’s funny, Hubert, is that we actually have an experiment on this. During Lent, there is very little of this kind of dialogue. Gee, I wonder why.
And since you got personal, take a good look at your own life. If my life turned out like yours, I’d be in a deep depression.
And another thing I learned from this… the Immanuel Quickley pick really was an extraordinary piece of work. He alone accounts for more than half of the front office’s VORP. If Leon makes just an ordinary pick there, we don’t get OG. Or maybe we do get OG but it costs us something that we needed for KAT or Mikal and we don’t get one of them. Either way, that pick was a critical moment in Knicks history.
Begley just reported that KAT has shown up to the facility before training camp and everything seems cool and discussions are ongoing but have been friendly. Both sides want KAT here for a long time.
It sounds like yesterday’s report was a nothingburger.
The Mikal trade should not be discussed any further.
1. It’s a 100% certainly they overpaid.
2. It’s a 100% certainly they knew they overpaid.
3. It’s a 100% certainty they were willing to overpay because they thought he was a major piece needed to put a serious contender on the floor.
4. It’s a 100% certainty they were right.
The issue with Mikal was, is and probably will continue to be that he’s capable of more than his role on the Knicks. We have so much talent, at various times one of either KAT, Mikal, OG or Hart will be doing less because one or two of the others is in a grove or has a great matchup. That’s a blessing. The idea is to ignore boxscore and AIO metrics and just watch what each player is capable of doing when it’s his turn or he has the right matchup. All 4 of our non Brunson starters are solid and capable of doing more than what they average when Brunson is passing and moving the ball.
I like the efforts to measure our draft success a LOT.
However, again, I think they were also thinking about LONG TERM cap considerations and specific players and not just about adding the best young player they could get. They were thinking “We eventually want to add veteran player A, B or C and we will need $ money to do it. How can move around in the draft, get a decnt player or roll out or accumulate picks so we can eventually make that move?”.
I feel like Miss Piggy on stage trying to sing my heart out while Statler and Waldorf scream insults at each other in louder and louder voices from the balcony (the mezzanine?).
And Robtachi, nobody knows why Jowles has gone mute, he had some pretty big life changes the last few years and he may have just decided to grow up and do adult things (I’d say we’re all grownups here, but boy does today prove that wrong…). Jowles inserted an occasional comment the last few months, e.g., during the playoffs, but damn do I miss his regular acerbic wit.
So if you’re just quiet, Jowles, think about more posts. Maybe not today, though…
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am getting super pumped for this season. Aside from defending our title, there are so many improved teams and interesting stories, I can’t wait to watch a lot of the rest of the games too.
I’ll reiterate that Deuce is amazing by RAPM. It could be a lot of noise. But if RAPM is accurately describing Deuce’s impact, then he’s a massive plus in the Leon draft assessment.
It took me 2 minutes of clicking on random threads in Lent find you starting a fight with someone.
And that was you on vacation!
You’re such a fucking loser that you spent your vacation starting a fight on the internet… with someone you like!
I also recall you went to a Santana concert with your daughter this summer and spent the whole night logging in to fight with E and remind Noble that he once called the front office a rudderless mess.
I mean it, dude. Get therapy. You’re not well, and reminding all of us of the things we got wrong is not making you better.
I would love to tell you what it’s like here on the days you go away but you haven’t taken a day off in 15 years. You just make everyone else go away.
Sure, Hubert, I’m gonna get some therapy so I can become a mentally healthy guy like you whose life is so wonderful and who always contribute positively to this blog.
Can’t wait till the baseball playoffs when you start ranting about a team that you didn’t even watch the entire year in protest. What a guy!
I’m still working on it. And it’s been extremely unpleasant. So that dumb MFer picked the wrong day to fuck with someone.
Alas, I know this means I need to log off now and exercise. Bitch slapping ignorant trolls like Z-Man feels good but isn’t actually healthy.
(And yes, Bob, I’m going to confess this.)
Fun part of finding that old BBA fight I just found…
he put all your stupid takes in it!
Not only were you the staunchest and dumbest Thibs acolyte of all time, you had the worst KAT take on the blog and you wouldn’t shut up about it for two years. And you kept telling everyone we were gonna lose in the first round.
And who comes here every day to throws that in your face? Who has bookmarks of all the things you said that didn’t age well? No one! Because it’s pathetic.
I’m curious to see how I react this season in game threads…
Guys, a video of Mitch draining practice jumpers just dropped and it’s pretty bittersweet….
Actually, I think my KAT takes were pretty much aligned with yours! And I stand behind one of my Thibs takes. I also wish I had a nickel for every time that BBA wished that it was Lent.
And by the way, I have admitted to being totally wrong about KAT. Have you ever admitted to being totally wrong about anything?
All you’re doing is exposing how emotionally fragile you are and calling me names like a middle schooler. In fact, you’re a lot like a middle schooler, allowed angry know at all who actually knows nothing.
I would like to send you all to… therapy !!! 🙂
😢
I thought maybe your major project was to correlate uric acid and the art of flame war.
The nice thing about gout is that it clears up. Sadly, Hubert‘s disorder is permanent.
The only major project I care about is Alan’s rebuttal to the NYT’’s release of its top 100 tv shows of the 21st century
Although Pete Alonso had a 471 foot project today
You’re calling me names like a middle schooler in this post. Truly astonishing ignorance.
I wrote a little about it today, Owen: https://www.whatsalanwatching.com/friday-check-in-ah-youth/
TL;DR: 1)the methodology they used is not the methodology I would use, 2)at some point later this fall, I’ll do my own attempt at this. Maybe not 100, but something substantial.
Maybe he is planning on going full Hal Greer/Don Kojis and shoot jumpers from the free throw line… https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1o0iblf/highlights_the_jump_shot_free_throw_don_kojis_and/
Did you even look at what you wrote about me before you posted that? You even had to apologize to Doogie for calling me the C word. Before that point, all I did was characterize your posts, accurately, I believe. But that’s your MO. When you can’t defend the bullshit that you’re posting against my rebuttals, you get personal. That’s what middle schoolers do. You wear that hat quite well.
That’s not a rebuttal. That’s you being an asshole.
And an idiot, because it was literally my analysis that suggested it was solid but not spectacular.
It was obvious for the last 6 years and you were too stupid to see it. You bitched and moaned about it and sesame every fucking draft night, and all the nights in between.. you are a phony bitch with no core. The irony here is that it’s your own analysis that is refuting every damn opinion you had about the draftin the past.
Yesterday yesterday yesterday yesterday
It was actually just yesterday when he said something about Leon sucking at the draft. But I suppose that having the memory of a goldfish is critical with a personality like yours.
YES!
That’s exactly what I did!
The only irony here is that you’ve been spending the whole day claiming I can’t admit when I’m wrong because you couldn’t comprehend that I started the day by suggesting I’ve been wrong.
So on top of being a relentless asshole, you’re also an astonishing idiot.
Yeah, never mind that I tried to tell you that for the last six years and all I got in return was anger and condescension. But hey, welcome to reality! It’s never too late!
Baloney. All you’ve been doing for the past 6 years is posting stupid shit like this slop you wrote today:
That’s the slop you’ve been slinging for 6 years… a ridiculous mischaracterization of everyone else’s opinion, combined with a series of baseless claims that make no sense, finished off with an air of self congratulatory condescension because somehow you’re actually really proud of coming up with this.
You think people don’t respond to this because it’s good?
Guys, can I once again very strongly suggest, for the sake of the rest of the group, that you each act like the other doesn’t exist? Don’t respond to each other’s posts. Don’t reference each other or their posts. There are lots of other Knickerbloggerites with whom you can each engage!
Nobody cares which of you is in the right at this point. It just sucks to see swaths of entire days taken up by you two swapping insults, regardless of who allegedly started it.
Please?
Never mind that it is 100% accurate. Always has been. Always will be. But you go right on spinning away in your cappuccino-fueled rants.
Sorry Alan. Next time Hubert comes here admitting that the sun sets in the west after six years of angry condescending insistence that it sets in the east, I’ll let it go.
I really enjoyed the draft part of today’s discussion and Hubert and TNFHs analyses. Hubert ended with this result:
A median VORP of zero is much better than it appears. The words “value over replacement player” suggest that this means half the players we drafted are better than G-League quality. But actually, the median VORP in the NBA is zero, so actually this means half the players we drafted were one of the top seven or eighty players on the team and comfortably in the regular rotation. Given where we typically draft, that is a very good result.
Alan I’ve been doing that all summer while this ignorant MFer has replied to pretty much every single post I’ve written since the finals trying to pick a fight.
Today he got his wish.
Tomorrow I’ll go back to ignoring him.
And please. Don’t act like I’m the first person to call out Z-Man this summer. He’s the common denominator in every single problem.
So if you want to clean up the blog, start with that son of a bitch.
KFNINJ, thank you. I appreciate that someone realized I was giving the front office a lot of credit. Not just there but at multiple points throughout today.
Good night.
Not a great start, Z-Man!
Come after me, motherfuckers. Nobody messes with the Raven.
Jalen Brunson is… is.. overrated. There. I said it.
Speaking of some of the other posts in today’s discussion, I think the country ought to start appreciating politeness more. Too many people of every political persuasion seem to think that because it’s not illegal to be rude, therefore they should exercise their legal right and be rude. It has never been illegal to be rude and shouldn’t be either, but politeness is still a virtue that improves communication and makes life more pleasant for everyone..
“Today he got his wish.”
Actually I wished that the Pope would declare that Lent should be observed year around. Alas…
we’re all a little crazy here – but we are not that crazy…
“Come after me, motherfuckers. Nobody messes with the Raven.
Jalen Brunson is… is.. overrated. There. I said it.”
That’s really funny!
There’s that old saying about how no matter how rich or poor or good or bad your life is, you will always be as happy or sad as you were before. So if you’re a depressed person who wins the lottery, after you adjust to your new life of wealth, you’ll go back to being just as depressed as before. Alternatively, if you’re a positive and happy person and you become paralyzed, acte you adjust to your new status as a paralyzed person, you’ll still be a happy person.
I’ve been thinking about this often recently with this blog and Zman and Hubs in regards to the Knicks winning a title.
Shams
If I remember correctly it was TNFH who came up with the great VORP analysis, Hubert just suggested a modification. Otherwise today’s Z vs. H fight was so silly it made me chuckle a couple of times.
The one I’m really worried about is DRed.
