The Athletic:
“The Pacers lost their 13th straight game last night. It’s a franchise record.”
great news to wake up to
“hubert says:
January 6, 2026 at 19:26
according to his agent all seven teams with head coaching vacancies did exactly that within 45 minutes of the announcement that he was out in baltimore
It must have been really awkward when the Ravens called.
Knicks 2025 says:
January 6, 2026 at 19:33
thats pretty funny hubert i reported it the way that it was reported but i should have picked up on that”
i sleuthed out the disconnect on this its not “all seven teams with head coaching vacancies” its actually “seven teams whether they have known coaching vacancies or not” an example would be the miami dolphins by the way its up to nine teams who have reportedly asked after harbaugh now
Giants fans probably don’t want to read this article.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6942819/2026/01/05/ny-giants-joe-schoen-ownership-no-standards/
I read it anyway.
if a team in any sport fires its head coach and then within 15 hours after that announcement that fired head coach has 9 job offers does that inherently make the initial firing a bad move i say probably so
My kids need to get into college, so they had me buy the $19.99 monthly membership to ChapGPT, presumably to cheat on their homework, which I am fine with, except for the $19.99 a month part. To get my money’s worth, I started asking it loaded questions, which I knew the answers to already, like “is Shakira a good singer”,
if you bought into this you haven’t been reading the last 15 years of kb after dark in the donniverse. that $19.99 is definitely being funneled toward universalizing switzerland’s prohibition on keeping singular guinea pigs while donnie’s kids take turns manning the #gptchats-computers-brains slack channel they made for him.

Not to be overly dramatic, but could this game tonight be the most important one of the season so far?
We already won the NBA Cup, it may have been the single biggest game in Knick history. Our lack of a banner will hang forever.
The 37th game of an NBA season only has outsized importance if you bet on the game. The only thing that matters is how the team is playing for the first game of the playoffs. The team is talented enough to have a 99% chance of making the playoffs and the entire regular season is about setting the team up for April-June. It is a glorified exhibition season and should be looked at appropriately.
It’s incredibly important for our emotional well being. But it is actually a pretty meaningless game.
I do find my optimism waning today, but it’s not because of us. It’s because I’ve just woken up to how good the Celtics are. If Jayson Tatum comes back (and it seems like he will), we are not the best team in the East. I’m as impressed as I’m annoyed.
A couple of random call backs that I bet Big Blue Al will remember because I think we were same kid in the 90’s…
1. The shellacking Detroit gave us reminded me of this classic regular season Knicks game (the first time we played the Bulls after they eliminated us in the 1992 playoffs): https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/199211280NYK.html
2. We’re playing Sacramento on Jan 14th and if I’m Mike Brown I’m diverting the plane to Reno like Pat Riley did in Feb ’94. This team needs to bond.
They lost Luke Kornet, Big Al, KP, Tatum, and Jrue Holiday but somehow find themselves at our heels.
If Brad Stevens knows that JT is coming back, he will make a trade to bolster the roster with some size too. It won’t be just Jason Tatum returning and we go back to needing luck, having to exceed expectations & beat a more talented team to get to the finals.
That game Hubert wasn’t on national TV but I remember how excited I was seeing the highlights on Sportscenter! Knicks lost to the Bulls on Christmas night that season but won the next 2 matchups in the regular season with MJ being suspended for one of the games after getting into a fight with Reggie Miller.
Knicks sure looked like they were bonding pretty well when they were celebrating in Vegas after winning the Cup…
Great until they end up with the #1 pick
“They lost Luke Kornet, Big Al, KP, Tatum, and Jrue Holiday but somehow find themselves at our heels.”
ummmmmmm…….theyre not at our heels theyre ahead of us and have been for a couple of days now
It will be funny if Tatum comes back and then Boston plays worse.
Celtics have found a way to hide Anfernee Simons defense and turn him into a winning player.
And Neemias Queta the starting Center seems to filling in a big hole in the frontcourt
“It will be funny if Tatum comes back and then Boston plays worse.”
its not actually that funny because were going to end up having to hope for that odd outcome
Sometimes its annoying how analytical y’all are, lol.
Of course one regular season game is ultimately “meaningless.”
I’m talking about narratives! Emotions! Vibes! Feelings!
Are you all juts a bunch of robots?
in the south its y’all juts i think i resent being called a juts
STFU Knicks 2025.
Born in the south.
JUTS is a typo.
Why are you like this?
“It will be funny if Tatum comes back and then Boston plays worse.”
Yeah…Jason Tatum is not Trae Young.
Not a fan of the NFL or the Giants, but as it’s a topic that comes up here fairly often, I turn your attention to The Athletic’s article delightfully titled, “Giants’ decision to bring back Joe Schoen makes it clear: They have no standards anymore.”
Back then I mostly listened to Clyde and Breen on the radio. My parents didn’t have cable tv. But for big games my dad would take me to the local Knights of Columbus chapter to watch in their game room. And this was one of them. This game might actually have been the happiest moment of my young Knicks fandom. It felt so good to smack them down.
(I saw a lot of huge games in that room! I remember making my dad take me there after the 6th inning of Jim Abbot’s no-hitter.)
Anyway this Pistons team reminds me of us back then. They think they want us. They think they can take us. But I don’t think their confidence is likely to be rewarded. I trust our experience (and Brunson) to beat them.
The Celtics, though… I really don’t want to play them.
Well this sucks. It’s last year all over again — we looked pretty good until a single point where we the league figured us out and we instantly collapsed from “plausible contender” to “slightly above average team.” Last year we stayed that way for the rest of the season, and it’s hard to see why that won’t happen again this year.
As I predicted, DET has clearly surpassed us now and will only get better from here. BOS will gain an MVP candidate this Spring, and they won’t have KP’s corpse to drag them down. We are very unlikely to beat the playoff opponents we beat last season, where we had a 95th percentile outcome up to G1 against Indiana.
We need a change. Brunson & Towns just can’t work. Towns is fool’s gold as a stretch 5 because he can be guarded with a wing. A godfather offer for Giannis is the only way out, and we don’t have one to make, so a slow decline into Brunson’s dotage is our most likely fate.
Once again we are about the 8th best team in the NBA. I guess we’ll always have the cup.
Y’all is superior as it clearly denotes that you are using the plural ‘you’ instead of the singular ‘you’, providing more clarity to readers and listeners.
Hard to imagine anything will be more crushing than getting annihilated by one of our biggest competitors who were missing 2 starters while simultaneously falling behind the Celtics who weren’t supposed to be serious competition.
If we fall behind Toronto, who is 1.5 games back, it’ll also feel bad.
Pags has lost some zip on his fastball.
Btw everyone knows we were 23-9 when Al gave up complaining and have gone 0-4 since he announced his resolution, right?
Quitter’s Day is Friday against the Suns. The universe is really testing him.
Win or lose tonight I’m dragging my Robot ass out to see that new park Chan wook flick no other choice.
I complained during the Spurs game then gave up complaining the next day so technically Knicks are 0-3 since I’ve decided to be more positive.
Did you call the Spurs game the worst loss of the season? Because I think that’s the key factor
We are the best Week 18 team in NFL history, though.
I thought Harbaugh getting fired might be a break but I think he’s too smart to hitch his wagon to a team that brings back Joe Schoen.
i was there in the stadium…i remember i was bored…sitting around the apartment and since I lived right by a 6 train stop and had nothing to do…just went up to the stadium…and they sucked so it was easy to get a ticket…I moved down right on the dugout baseline for the 9th inning…i kept my abbott rookie card in mint condition ever since that day…
This line from that Athletic article is brutal:
A slightly above average team that somehow still managed to get to the ECF and beat the defending champs who were a 60 win team last year.
If the Giants are gonna Giant, Steve Spagnuolo might be the best option.
I’m 100% in favor of Hannah Gadsby’s statement: “Y’all? Yes please! Because y’all is the best, most inclusive, second-person plural pronoun in the English-speaking world!”
Y’all means all.
No, Swiftie, y’all means “you (makes big circle with hand) all”
Yes, hence my statement that our postseason last year was our 95th percentile outcome. Sometimes slightly above average teams even make the finals, as we did in 1999 and MIA did in 2023.
Even with that level of luck, the season ended in 3 minutes in G1 of the ECF and we never had a real shot at the title.
Rolling a natural 20 doesn’t make it any more likely you’ll roll another on your next throw. We are a first or second round exit this year with 90%+ confidence.
thanks hubie, thanks pepper…your stories made me smile a bunch…
okay pags, good to have you back…hope you are finding a reason to dance vigorously each and every day…
just wondering if you still remember the first type character which you played (class and alignment), and did you ever host as a dungeon master?
as much as I’d prefer to not wallow in pity – I too am also a bit upset concerning the very very short lived demise of the boston celtics…
I didn’t think they’d be bad (despite replacing their whole front court and missing a top 10 player), i didn’t think they would be this good either…
Edit:
– first toon was a chaotic neutral berserker (had no idea how anything else worked)
– never hosted (may have filled in a bit)
– switched to pc gaming (pools of radiance) a few years later for d&d stuff
whats the deal with josh when he got hurt it really didnt look that bad at all thought hed miss one game or maybe two tops:
Expected Lineup
PG Jalen Brunson
SG Mikal Bridges
SF OG Anunoby
PF K. Towns
C M. Robinson
MAY NOT PLAY
F Josh Hart Out
G L. Shamet Out
Until the next incredibly important game for our emotional well being a week from next Tuesday. 🙂 Maybe for the fans emotional well being. Do you think guys making 25 M a year plus give a single fuck about this next particular meaningless game?
These men have earned the position of being self contained companies and worry about what is in their best individual long term interest. Period.
Bob, one of the principal aspects of narcissism is not being able to understand or believe in (or give credence to) any position other than your own.
I might have mentioned this but when I was a kid I thought cats were the girls and dogs were the boys. I still think that.
Most everyone did at one point, Clarence. That’s because cats are small, graceful, untrainable, and can draw blood if you’re not careful. Dogs are mostly bigger, stupid, and potentially very dangerous.
Good to see you again, geo.
TBH despite otherwise impeccable nerd credentials, I’ve never played D&D! I grew up with a NES instead of a computer, and while I do like CRPGs, I never had enough friends as nerdy as me to play an actual tabletop RPG.
I was devastated to learn recently that the coming remake of the incredible early 21st century CRPG, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was based on the Star Wars D20 ruleset, is going to discard that aspect in favor of the same generic action-oriented gameplay that everything has now…
Please tell me what is so smashingly important about tonights game…. I’ll wait. Maybe a peek in the mirror would be appropriate.
I am fairly certain the sky will not fall if the Knicks happen to lose, or even lay another egg today.
get in where you fit in pags…
honestly, that was a pretty brief period when I ever sat down with a group of folks (other than family and to eat) to do any kind of group activity with “friends”…actually they were a small group of friends that I was interjecting myself in to…
I’m built for solo gaming…
played poker once with some work “friends”, it was weird and tortuous…
but Bob – what about our feelings?!?!
Now it all makes sense, the team was worried something happened to Pags and started losing to see if he was still alive… now that we know that he is alive, we’ll be back to winning… starting tonight!
Good one, cyber!
But we haven’t heard from E yet…
LOL!
He’s probably busy telling everybody on Raptorsblogger how RJ is the most important player on the team.
Is Clyde available for tonight’s game? Swift was talking about our well being, and in that case having Clyde on the broadcast definitely helps a lot.
What a weird response by Bob. The our in “our emotional wellbeing” was clearly about our mood here at KB, and he goes off on a rant as if I suggested Jalen Brunson might need therapy if the Knicks lose.
Washington is 3 wins out of 8th place in the East. Maybe there’s still a chance the Knicks can get their pick?
Part of me thinks they are trading for Trae because they are worried about winning too many games with CJ McCollum.
Imagine your team moving on from max contracts for Bradley Beal and John Wall only to trade for Trae Young.
This is how horror movies start. Clearly a motif at this point. When I look in the mirror I see fucking sex and nerd. How does that help.
You’ll have to excuse me that I found it strange working adults would find their emotional well being somehow tied to the out come of game 37 sans a really huge wager. Really? Your emotional welling is tied to the results of tonight’s game. A touch melodramatic?
f-ing sex as opposed to what other kind of sex
That tantric shit
sting and trudie style got it
There are cheap AI chatbots that have better understanding of idiom and tone than Bob.
Have you considered that fandom is inherently whimsical and hyperbolic?
Does spending your time telling us not to care so much really make you the adult in the room in comparison? Shouldn’t you be maximizing some sort of rational utility function instead?
You got me excited for a second but Washington’s actually 5.5 games out of 10th.
But who really has had to sacrifice the most? That’s what I wanna fucking know. Cmon Bob, the drama.
My complaint with Bob was actually about his statement that I took to mean that basketball professionals who make 25 m a year only care about their brand.
Not that they don’t care about their brand, and likely a few might only care about it. But most are hugely competitive, highly driven characters that can’t help but care about an otherwise middle-of-the-season game.
As for the rest of us, you clearly aren’t reading the game threads, much less the next day’s threads. Almost every play has catastrophic implications. Hell, that’s one of the reasons I’m here — to share in the hysteria. It’s way more fun burning witches as a mob.
She turned me into a newt.
And Donnie, thanks for accusing me of being the third or fourth funniest guy on the blog last night. Reason being is that despite taking a few stats classes, I am an enfeebled idiot in that regard, while my basketball acumen is largely focused on cheering for pet bench players, which does have the advantage of enraging Hubert, so there’s that.
I mean, if Washington finishes 8th, there’s a 40% chance the Knicks get that pick, which are much better odds than we would have given it two months ago.
that’s funny clarence, that refrain MB kept saying about individual player sacrifice after all the wins is sounding a bit hollow now…
the team is probably just not spraying well enough at the moment…
You’ll have to excuse me that I found it strange working adults would find their emotional well being somehow tied to the out come of game 37 sans a really huge wager. Really? Your emotional welling is tied to the results of tonight’s game. A touch melodramatic?
local man perplexed that blog of diehard sportsteam fans care about sports games. not all tears are an evil, bob. one must imagine Sisyphus happy.
I’m happy when my team wins, sad when it loses, and usually angry at the refs either way. This strikes me as pretty common human behavior.
But not every emotion is crippling. We feel them, they go away or sometimes they’ll linger as a minor annoyance in the back of your mind like wondering if you turned the oven off.
If I felt no emotion from a game, I doubt I’d watch it.
Anyway, there will be a lot of overreacting, venting, and hyperbole if the Knicks lose tonight, in what is hopefully a short term trend.
I’m sure the page reads like we’re all mentally unstable but it probably helps to plop everything onto the digital page rather than keep it in. Or so Robin Williams would have me believe in Goodwill Hunting.
Whatever the Mormons do before marriage. I think ear stuff.
Interesting that Carmelo Anthony is questioning who our 2nd scoring option is (see NY Daily News). I asked the same question the other day in a mild criticism of Towns. On average, Towns scores like a high level 2nd option, but depending on the defense/matchup and what Brunson is doing, he often vanishes. If he’s the 2nd option, then it’s on Brunson and Brown to get him the ball when and where he can be effective. He’s 7′. He’s not some guard or wing that we want creating off the dribble all the time. Either he has to start posting up lower when he has a mismatch (like KP) and/or they have to start running plays to get him open. If that can’t be done, it’s up to Mikal to demand the ball from Brunson more often and to get aggressive.
We should tank the hell out of our two games against Washington.
one thing i know for myself is that losses hurt a bit until the next win so yeah its been too long right now
Strangest (Sports) Headline in a While:
Sources: Hawks’ Trae Young has Wizards as top trade destination
Sisyphus never had to watch the Knicks turn Lamarcus Aldridge & Joakim Noah into Eddy Curry
We have some actual Knicks news today. Tosan Evbuomwan was waived. His contract was about to be fully guaranteed.
Well, maybe news is generous.
EB, today was the deadline for cutting players whose salary would become guaranteed after January 10th. They have to clear waivers by the 10th, so the practical cut date is 48 hours earlier. Evbuoman’s salary didn’t count against the cap because he was on a two way contract, so the move doesn’t give more cap flexibility. But it does give them a little bit more roster flexibility in that now they have an open two way roster spot. Hukporti will also become guaranteed on the 10th, but they clearly need him.
See the middle of this article for a discussion of this.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6942978/2026/01/06/nba-65-game-rule-awards-consequences/
Note that the article is mostly about how the 65 game rule for all NBA isn’t working and is worth a read.
That’s not it al all. “local man” is a fan of the team amd has watched them with regularity since 1960. “local man” understands the meaning of the word fan. “local man” cannot imagine any sane fellow’s emotional well being in the balance over the out come of tonight’s game.
Local Man watches pro basketball as performance art of ballet among giants and finds the game pleasing even if his local team loses. It is an artful game.
Tosan Evbuomwan’s last name just looks like someone scrambled it.
I can’t help trying to unscramble it every time I see it. But coming up with a good replacement keeps going too many or too few letters. Movebowman. Wombnave.
At least I can stop now…
How ’bout Local Man lightens up a little?
Bum On Wave
Speaking of bingo cards, did not have Precious Achiuwa as #1 on the Top Ten plays from yesterday…
And nice one, EB…
Local man looks in mirror and the mirror looks back at him.
deuce starting instead of mitch mbrown gets it
