Bing Bong
Clearly, CLEARLY Bryson Warren is the missing ingredient:
https://gleague.nba.com/player/1641985/bryson-warren
doesnt seem like the optimal time for a bing bong those typically come when we are 1) playing well and 2) winning neither of which is going on right now decent chance we fall to #3 tonite with a loss to detroit and celts win over bulls in boston
What makes you the arbiter of such things? Just kidding.
To state the incredibly obvious a road win tonight would be a very welcome change of course.
Was literally listening to a podcast this morning about Pixar movies, and someone said Bing Bong’s death in Inside Out didn’t make them cry. (Because they are a monster)

Savage but worthy read in Macri’s newsletter today about the horrific recent defense by the Knicks, and (knowing this will send someone [looking at you Strat] into a flurry of follow-up posts) putting a significant amount of fault at the feet of El Capitan.
(1)
I have also made the connection to the cartoon elephant (Richard Kind characters just want to be loved like everyone else).and the Knicks’ rallying cry.
(2) Mike Brown used to babysit JB Bickerstaff

Almost as weird as Samuel Beckett driving Andre the Giant to school.
https://x.com/NBA_NewYork/status/2007972295483232554/photo/1 ESPN new system showing how much value a player adds on both offense and defense has Brunson as a bottom 5 defender and a top 5 offensive player .
Couple of random quotes from Macri for those not getting it:
Before Anunoby sat out for three weeks, the Knicks had a 106.4 defensive rating when he played and a 123.7 rating when he sat. That discrepancy was among the best in the NBA. Since he’s returned though, New York is giving up 115.3 points per 100 possessions with Anunoby on the court and 113.1 when he’s off according to NBA.com. If OG isn’t going to play at an All-Defense level, this whole operation falls apart.
and
Following this weekend’s games, New York’s defense is now an astounding 12.7 points per 100 possessions stingier when Brunson doesn’t play according to Cleaning the Glass. That is the eighth worst mark in the entire league, and the seven players below him have all played fewer than 400 total minutes. For further context, a negative 12.7-point differential is more than double Julius Randle’s worst number as a Knick.
And lastly:
Brunson, on the other hand, is a part of four different five-man lineups that have played at least 50 minutes. Three would rank 23rd or lower in the defensive rating rankings. Looking at two-man combos, of the seven pairings featuring Brunson and another rotation player for at least 300 minutes, six have the equivalent of a bottom-10 defense. The lone exception is Brunson and Deuce, which has allowed just 112.7 points per 100 possessions (a top-eight number) in 386 minutes.
We all love him on every level. They say “love is blind”. I’m not sure people realize how bad he is on defense some nights when he scores 30, hits 2 clutch 3s and has 7 assists. He’s the kind of guy that really needs a peak Mitch type C behind him, a couple of solid wings to help protect him and it always helps if Deuce is on the court to take POA responsibility so Mikal and OG can do what they are supossed to be doing on defense.
What Brunson also needs is a sidekick who doesn’t lumber into the lane with a flailing off arm (KAT), or who doesn’t avoid contact like the plague (Mikal), or who doesn’t cough up the ball whenever a double collapses on him in the paint (OG).
This is the same team as we were last year, with virtually the same record. Brown has masked certain problems and unmasked others. but at the end of the day, this is a mediocre defensive team that has vulnerabilities on offense as well. The math is simple:
Brunson + Towns < 16 wins in the playoffs
Here’s a quick advanced stats update:
Brunson’s Defense
Actual EPM (“Actual EPM” uses only numbers from this year) has Brunson in the 1st percentile for defense at -2.3. For comparison, Trae Young is at -1.6.
There’s only 12 players listed at or below -2.0. Of the non-Brunson players 3 are Pelicans, 3 are Jazz, 2 are Wizards, 1 is on Brooklyn (Cam Thomas), 1 is on Charlotte, and 1 is Jericho Sims (lol, Milwaukee is dumb).
Point is Brunson is the only bottom 12 player on a playoff team.
Hukporti’s Defense
Hukporti’s Actual DEPM is +1.9, which makes him tied for 20th best in the league (14th best in the non-OKC category).
Problem is that Hukporti has a -3.2 Actual OEPM, which is a huge improvement over his Expected EPM (the multi-year version) of -4.3 that’s tied for dead last in the league with Jericho Sims (seriously, lol) and Trey Jemison (we have a type).
Huk struggles with handing the ball off, let alone executing the more complex parts of Brown’s offense. If we run PnR for him the next month, maybe we can convince another team he can be an okay rim diver. Maybe he’ll turn out okay at it, but it’s not the offense we run.
The Towns Trade
KAT’s total Actual EPM is 3.3, due to KAT’s impressive 1.2 DEPM (idk, a lot of rebounding probably), which actually moves him ahead of Brunson, keeping in mind we’re only looking at this year and Brunson’s offense is 7th in the league and more than doubles KAT’s OEPM. The multi-year version outs Brunson around 7th too.
But I really wanted to get to our good friend Julius Randle who is at an even +3.0 (same as Brunson) total Actual EPM this year and Donte is at +2.0. Whose to say what would happen if they stayed in NY, but we effectively traded a +3.3 for a +3.0 & +2.0. Maybe not the best trade.
I’m not sure what happened, but Brunson’s defense has been markedly worse than in the last couple of years. Is it that teams are hunting him more systematically? It’s a big problem, especially with KAT as center behind him.
The thing that keeps me sane is when I look around the NBA its not loaded with great teams. Alot of these teams that are also considered contenders have flaws and similar season profiles as the Knicks. Even mighty OKC who people thought might break the wins record and go 74-8 already have 6 losses.
I’ll hold on to my belief that at least in the East I don’t believe there’s a team that can win 4 of 7 from the Knicks in a playoff series.
I don’t think there is a team in the NBA that is more dependent on a player than we are on Brunson, and opponents are probably game-planning to put as much stress on him as they can, on both ends of the court. They relentlessly target his shortcomings on defense and throw waves of handsy, physical athletic wings at him on offense. To Brunson’s credit, he takes on the challenges on both ends with a grit and relentlessness we all can be proud of. But he needs more help.
“I’ll hold on to my belief that at least in the East I don’t believe there’s a team that can win 4 of 7 from the Knicks in a playoff series.”
I am 100% in agreement…except for the Celtics, Sixers, Pistons, Hawks, Magic, or Heat.
Yeah Z-man I know you love all these mediocre teams in the East.
Super scared of the 17-20 negative point differential Hawks!
It’s not been their only (or even main) problem, but worth noting that in the 10 games since the Cup, Knicks opponents are 149-379 from deep (39.3%), which would be the worst 3P% allowed in the NBA over the whole season.
They have actually been better at limiting 3PAs over that stretch than earlier in the season (but that could be because opponents are having their way inside the paint).
“Yeah Z-man I know you love all these mediocre teams in the East.”
I left out the Bucks, Bulls, and Raptors, so there’s that!
Anyway, we all know your MO…smugly dub us unbeatable so you can justify going all doomsday in game threads when we are mysteriously losing against all odds.
Did you not see my new year’s resolution?!?!
bba is a generational kb poster in that he is a clearly a gen xer but can trash talk boomer style with zman yet post like a whiny millennial on game threads. also roughly 80% of this thread is wrong. no questions.
first time watching Inside Out hit me hard – all i could think was: wtf and I was not expecting this kind of deep stuff – in a kid’s movie…
youngest son liked it a lot…
Toy Story got a little deep at times too, Inside Out was just so incredibly imaginative in illustrating puberty and family dynamics…first time through was pretty surprised…
I’m on the younger side of Gen X but still definitely Gen X. I’ve leaned into the game thread shtick a bit extra this past year but my new years resolution on Knickerblogger is too no longer feed into that because honestly it’s not how I usually feel. I enjoy watching and rooting for the Knicks no matter how bad the game is going and I generally have a positive outlook for them because I’m a fan and no matter what I want them to win.
But I do believe sometimes we are overly critical of these Knicks when compared to the rest of the NBA. I messed with Z-man about the Hawks cause I think they’re a perfect example. We’ve heard for years here about Jalen Johnson and yes he’s become a beast and they look athletic as hell and theoretically should be a tough playoff matchup but they’re 17-20 with a negative point differential so honestly its ridiculous to think they’re anywhere near the Knicks level.
I apologize to all and officially withdraw my Bing Bong.
If we want to survive this season, we will probably need another Mitch to share the rim protection load and put KAT at PF full time. I suppose Huk could do the job, despite his offensive issues, but someone like Danny Gafford would be better.
But then KAT at PF for 38 minutes gives us a minutes crunch at the swingman spots. OG and Mikal with Hart and Deuce off the bench is already a crunch without even mentioning Clarkson, Kolek, McCullar, Diawara, Shamet, etc.
Idk, I guess if it were me, I’d find another rim protector and dump Yabu and Clarkson, and that’s your team for the 2025-6 season.
Then deal with KAT/Mitch during the offseason.
truth be told – first time through bing bong reminded me more of pennywise than anything else…
You learn things on this blog … just not always what you expect
Loved Andre the Giant in Princess Bride.
I haven’t said it this last week, both because what Jalen does – get a good shot (and usually make it) at the end of games is a critical NBA skill – but swing the defense come together when he’s out, even with KAT in, made me think that yes, the right trade is Jalen for Giannis. We’d never do it, and I should be punched for saying it, but that would make us more solid.
Ack.
I don’t disagree on th4 Knicks being theoretically better than the Hawks, but I also think the Hawks can get better and that their record is not reflective of how good they can be if they are healthy and fully gelled in the playoffs. We know that KP and Trae are “theoretically” good, and we also know that Risacher is not playing as well as he did last year so there could be some upside there. So while we absolutely should beat them in a 7-game series even if all works out for them, I would definitely be concerned, because we are one tweak away from being severely compromised, and that tweak could be to any of a bunch of guys. More succinctly, our depth is mostly an illusion because even at full strength we are lacking in defense and overall size/athleticism.
“I don’t think there is a team in the NBA that is more dependent on a player than we are on Brunson”
the nuggies might want to have a word with you re nikola jokic

Don’t feel bad, rama. Any non-Knicks fan with any objectivity would call that an absolute no-brainer, and most objective Knicks fans would as well. Thing is, I don’t think the Bucks would do that trade even if Leon would do it, nor should they.
Look, we all adore Brunson and agree that he’s a second-team all-NBA type player. But Giannis is a perennial MVP candidate. If you traded Giannis straight up for Brunson and whatever was needed for filler (e.g. Mitch+Yabu+minimums), the Knicks are arguably the best team in the NBA.
“the nuggies might want to have a word with you re nikola jokic”
I get this in the sense that Jokic is the best player in the world, but everything the Knicks do is built around Brunson. the difference is that they could ham-and-egg it better without Brunson by changing the game plan than Denver can because when you lose Brunson, you also lose his flaws, which are far more egregious than Jokic’s.
ugh, just read through the basketball stuff on the thread…those are some fugly stats…thanks though raven and EB…wow…
jalen is worse for your defense than trae young…bing bong, truly…
Trae young has played in less games than Brunson. Trae might be worse than Brunson if he played in more games, but yeah both are bad
Brunson should be looked at like Lillard back in his Portland days . Elite offensive player who can carry your offense most of the time and a bad defender.
You’re looking at rear view mirrow. Jalen is younger than Giannis, has less miles on his body and makes less money. Also, his game will age much better than Giannis will.
Here is a three way trade that could work for all.
Wolves get: Deuce, Turner – save a lot of money & solve spacing for Ant
Bucks get: Gobert, OG, Hart + picks – stay relevant & make playoffs.
Knicks get: Giannis and DDV. – Leon pushes chips all in again.
Yeah but if you trade Jalen and Mikal for Giannis and bro, who’s your point guard? Deuce? Tyler? The ghost of Chris Paul??
Where are the picks coming from in that trade ? Bucks wouldn’t do it
https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/knicks-plus-minus-leaders
He’s 2nd according to this , but yeah
Brown isn’t just aware that McBride leads the team in plus-minus: he’s unsurprised by it. The coach told reporters on Friday that the numbers matched the eye test.
“He’s a baller, man. Defensively, really good getting into the ball … he helps kind of nullify our opponents’ pick-and-roll game when he’s out there, which helps a ton because the NBA is all about pick-and-roll,” the coach said of the former second-round pick. “And then, you know, he can score, he can shoot it. If you leave him open, he’s probably going to make it. If you close out too hard, he’s got a chance to blow by you. He can get to his middy or spray it. He’s a baller, it doesn’t surprise me that his net rating is high.”
Would that extrapolate to more than the 26.9 minutes he’s averaged per game in 24 appearances? His skillset certainly helps address New York’s two biggest problems this season, especially according to his coach. If the Knicks keep struggling defensively and against physicality on both ends, elevating McBride to the starting lineup could be a worthwhile experiment.
https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-defensive-baller-miles-mcbride-starting-case
Full rebuild is NOT an option. Write now their pick in June is going to Atlanta. They dont have their picks + Silver will flatten odds a little more in 2027 to discourage tanking.
Rudy, OG, Hart, Rollins and KPjr will get them to playoffs every year. That’s the best case scenerio for Milwakee.
Lol the Raiders fired Pete Carroll? Sorry, JK, but that team needs to be contracted.
-Our defense has only been affirmatively good with Brunson on the court for one of his seasons here (2023-2024, 114.5 with him on, thanks iHart), but this year it’s worse than it’s ever been. Part of that is of course personnel turnover, but that doesn’t explain why it’s substantially worse than last season. We have had some more games missed by key guys due to injury this year than we did last, so that accounts for some of it, but I also buy that Brunson himself has taken a step back from an already very-far-back place.
-Regarding our recent slide, I will keep banging the “Josh Hart is a lot more crucial to our offensive success than people myopically focused on shooting realize” drum. It has shown up in the relevant numbers ever since he got here–across his entire tenure here our PTS/100 is much better with him, as is our AST%, at-rim FG%, and even our 3PT%, not to mention, obviously, every rebounding stat known to man. We simply don’t employ anyone else who can consistently create easy baskets for themselves. Our ORTG is 119.4 since he went down, which is still very good, but with our defensive flaws that’s simply not enough. We have to be in the running for #1.
-Mitch’s impact this year feels kind of bizarro world–our best offense comes when we surround him with good shooters and let him rebound all the misses, but we’re fine without him defensively (better, by the numbers anyway). Slightly off-topic, but I think his agent worked out some kind of deal with the Knicks related to his pending free agency in which we do not call obvious injuries “injuries,” so we get stupid nonsense like him missing 3 consecutive games due to “injury management.” It’s annoying, because it makes it very hard for us to know where he stands physically.
I don’t think it matters as much as what we’d gain with Giannis. You have Deuce/Kolek/Mikal take the ball up, then you let Giannis initiate the offense. KAT/OG/Deuce/Mikal around him, how do you pack the paint?
I’m a NO on Brunson for Giannis. He’s our captain, let’s ride with him.
Unfortunately he has been missing some shots he usually makes at the end of games, but all the problems on defense being Brunson, come on!!
Everybody is playing a lot worse than before, OG, Mikal, Mitch… i won’t say KAT because he always plays like this, some games great, some games very far from what we expect from a max player. But hey, let’s hope they are more themselves tonight. Regular season is like this, there’s ups and downs.
write now is not great for us but come on we were due for a slump lets just hope it lets up and doesnt extend into detroit and our upcoming western road trip
My comment is not slump related. It’s been more obvious lately because there’s less of a black hole behind JB, but it’s a difficult to resolve issue when his defense is this bad.
– KAT is not a good enough #2… silly, ineffective offense and defensive lapses… doesn’t hedge effectively, his help defense / rotation instinct is awful… he will backup under the basket defensively and its an easy floater. He can’t jump. Sure he gets rebounds by default, but he doesn’t get the crucial ones as much as I think he should for being such a big wide body. Think Z-bo… positioning… instinct
– Good teams can overcome defensive mismatches for 1 player, doing it for 2 is mostly insurmountable…
– Hart is sorely missed because we lack alphas and he can take on that alpha role in at least 2 aspects of the game we all know about… 1) leading the break (AND finishing) and 2) attacking the glass from the guard position… no one else has proven capable of doing this for stretches… I was hoping for more of an impact from McBride when it comes to those things and I don’t see it… Maybe it’s happening more quietly… either way it hasn’t translated.
-It’s a frustrating team to watch when you see a lot of teams with jumpstart younger energizer bunnies flying all over the court… We remain, long, lean and/or slow. If we’re gonna be that way we need to be a little bit tougher, have more of an edge and that’s just not happening. We have a sometimes brutish OG, who can also disappear into the bush a’la Homer Simpson…he does this way too often… Mikal who is likely dodging any and all contact as he walks the halls of Little Caesers while I type this… and there’s KAT, who is physical, but only offensively and unfortunately just too out of control… His physicality and out of ‘controlness’ run parallel. We have guys making big $s that are far from total packages and they disappear ALOT… if Brunson isnt scoring we can be 30 point losers on a nightly basis… its a problem… This all happening in a year where our bench actually plays and gives good rest to our starters, yet they cant capitalize on getting those few extra minutes of rest… it hasnt translated into more energy or toughness or edge as the game winds down… ok im done…
The Knicks were 23-9 and had a 19pt lead in San Antonio before the wheels came off. Hopefully they’ll bounce back tonight since for the first time in forever they have the rest advantage and even though they have a west coast trip coming up with a back to back during the trip they also will have 2 days off in a row which they haven’t had since before the Cup Final.
This is a ridiculous take. Brunson is probably the best player in the league (outside of Jokic, SGA, Donic…which would never happen) that The Bucks could get for Giannis if they were looking for a superstar to keep the seats filled and keep them relevant.
The Knicks have made the 2nd round of the playoffs twice and the ECF once since Brunson became a Knick, which is better than what the Bucks have done the last 3 seasons with Giannis.
If the Bucks got Brunson for Giannis they would get a top 10 NBA player who is several years younger than Giannis on a ridiculously affordable contract and a player who is the ultimate team first player with an impeccable character.
Honestly, Z-Man, you should be banned for this comment. I’m joking but seriously, WTF?
Now if we offered this trade the Bucks may not do it because they might just want a boatload of picks for Giannis. But if they were looking for a star to replace Giannis, they could do a whole hell of a lot worse than Jalen Brunson.
Also, EVERY freaking team has adversity and losing streaks like this in the NBA. the schedule has gotten tougher. We’ve had key guys in and out of the line ups, cup hang over, etc.
Hot take. This losing streak is GOOD for our team. We are not a perfectly built sure thing finals contender, so we need the adversity and we need to find out what it is, exactly, we need to do to get better. Both internally with the players and coach we have but also, externally for Leon to know what he needs to do to tweak the roster before the trade deadline.
Swifty, you clearly see the world through orange and blue-colored glasses.
I do believe this current group after making the Conference Finals last season and winning the Cup less than a month ago probably isn’t as motivated right now to grind it out during the regular season in January.
I’m pretty sure they’re also nowhere near as worried about themselves and their flaws as we are right now, they seem like a pretty confident group that has built up some equity over the past year.
I know we like to talk about theoretical trades, but I’d have to estimate the chances of us trading Brunson at close to 1/10th of 1%. So we probably shouldn’t waste too much time on it.
We should probably be asking what’s the best way to build around him given his defensive deficiencies.
I don’t think Towns is the aswer.
Originally, I thought OG, Mikal and Hart would be sufficient enough on the perimeter to make up for Towns/Brunson. That went against my “you can’t have two negative defenders on the court rule”. So I probably should have known better. I gave up on that idea early last year when we couldn’t defend POA and either Towns was not up to the job or Thib’s strategy for Towns was wrong.
Then I was hoping the Mitch/Towns combo would work well enough to get the job done, but IMO Towns is better on offense at C and part time Mitch at less than peak hasn’t wowed me on defense consistently.
That’s why I keep coming back to Towns.
I like him a lot. I think he’s a fairly large plus player overall. I just think he’s also a tough guy to build around and not really the type of #2 option we necessarily want even though he scores like one. He’s a little too up and down depending on the matchup. We need someone that can step up a little more consistently (unless Mikal does it).
How, when or if Leon would try to move Towns (and for who) is over my pay grade. I don’t have any bright ideas. But I think it might have to be done eventually unless Leon has another solution or Brown comes up with a way to improve the defense. It may have to wait until they see what happens in the playoffs this year.
Yeah, it totally makes sense that we’ve got the worst record in the Eastern Conference. Depressing, but what’s new? We’re Knick fans.

Zman,
I do but I think your statement is wildly pessimistic as far as how the league values Brunson especially on his contract.
He’s several years younger than Giannis, less injury prone, on an amazing value contract and has impeccable character. If The Bucks wanted a superstar in return for Giannis, Brunson would be one of the best ones they could get (if we made him available).
I agree with Swift – yeah, we need to throw in a bit of salary, but it wouldn’t take a great player – they’d want a few picks, though. Off-season we could give one, plus some seconds…
Either way, I love watching Brunson play and am glad he’s not going anywhere. From a pure team-construction POV, though, heartless AF, that would be the move. That team would be VERY difficult to score on, and would have lots of ways to score on you. Top 5 on both ends, maybe top 3, as opposed to top 3 and #15 on D.
No pressure! 😛
That’s nuts.
If you wouldn’t trade Brunson for Maxey… well…. I don’t know what to tell you. He does everything Brunson does only 5 years younger and slightly better, with much better defense.
Who puts games on fucking peacock.
Guess I’ll see you guys tomorrow…
Seriously, what bullshit. There’s literally no other way to watch this game??
If you have YouTube TV the game is on NBC Sports Network.
Of course 1st Pistons possession is a Duncan Robinson And1 3pter over Brunson…
Then Stewart buries a corner 3pter…
Maybe I don’t want to watch this after all…
I hate starting Mitch and KAT together.
The team is so lost right now. Mitch isos, losing back cutters. WTF.
Bad vibes right now….we need one of our other “stars” to step up…don’t see it….also…wtf happened to OG…he can’t shoot anymore
Cade getting whatever he wants
Cade is abusing OG
WTF is this 1st quarter lineup? McCullar at PF?
BRING BACK THIBS!!
Okay, maybe I’ll stick around and just read the thread, cuz it’s pretty funny…
Actually not a bad start for the Knicks, only down 2 with 3 mins left in 1st quarter.
I mean seriously Ivey pulling up from 28 ft to drill a 3 in Mitch’s face is some bullshit.
some guys go an entire career without workshopping as many different moves as jalen hit in that quarter
Here i am… let’s gooooo Knicks! 🧡💙
I mean c’mon Knicks almost have a steal but it leads to another bullshit late clock 3pter by one of the worst 3pt shooting teams in the NBA.
Pathetic first six minutes, much improved energy the rest of the way after the time out when the reserves came in. We climbed back and will be in good shape IF they decide to play with some brains and energy defensively. I don’t trust them though.
Game thread on the injury list?
Of course Detroit is 5-6 from deep.
The NBA seems to have the hack- drive into the paint off the Knicks guard and either score or dish for a dunk. JB and Kolek both getting hunted
Nice, when the Knicks have a great offensive team, the NBA changes the rules and you can defend with a lot more aggressiveness now.
It’s insane how much the pistons get away with
It’s not the refs, and it’s not our offense. It’s our defensive holes. Lot’s and lots.
Yeah after that Duncan Robinson putback think it might be time to watch Monday Night Raw.
Can’t recall a player who avoids contact on a drive more than bridges….if he is remotely challenged on a drive…he defaults to fade away immediately
no peacock, so I’m just gonna pretend like this game never happened…
Heading toward another 60+ half. Another opponent having an offensive party on us. Isn’t that nice?
Well, i guess we’re still not on our best days, but let’s try to grind it out.
Team is a mess.
Spurs game increasingly looks like the OKC game last season.
These guys sound like a Pistons broadcast
I miss Clyde, losing is bad, losing without Clyde feels like a punishment
13 Stocks for Pistons, 3 for Knicks. Duncan getting O rebound off of Mitch, good times
Towns is a confusing player….it’s like he no shows half the time…
Lol, Peacock 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
Desperate times….gonna switch to the hapless rangers game
We’re shooting 57% from 3 and 54% overall and losing by 10
What’s wrong with this picture?
This does not look like a finals team. Or a team that is a Josh Hart away from the finals.
Once again we like the slower, shorter, less athletic team.
