Hollinger with a ranking of the 10 best players in the NBA for next season only. Not much meat in the article and as is typical, puts Jalen in at 9. But what struck me as I never thought about it before is when he slots Ant-Man at 6, he asks if he is the best American player in the NBA. And I can’t quibble with his top 5 (Wemby, Luka, Giannis, Shai, Jokic).

SITE NEWS:
OK so good news is that permalinks are working, but the bad news is the news bot isn’t.
What I need is someone who understands .htaccess esp. with how it reacts with WordPress/POST commands. If you know someone hit me up at mike at my last name .com. I’ll keep trying on my end, but I’m scared of tampering with the site working this close to the season start.
Well, feels like it’s time for a meta Question of the Day:
How much does everyone actually take advantage of the news links?
If people are just finding articles on their own anyway, and occasionally pasting them into the comments, is it really worth Mike’s time and effort to try to fix that issue, versus just having daily threads for us to argue about incinerated picks and Brian Cashman and whatnot?
Alan, good question. Can only speak for me, but I only rarely look over the news links, only when I’m super-bored and nobody’s been posting for a while and I’m all done looking for stuff on my own and I remember that they’re there. Partly because they’re mostly tiresome click-bait, partly because a lot of the links (e.g., Post, Daily News) block me from reading them anyway.
So I’d be fine if they never came back. At the same time, others often start a conversation thread based on what they read from one of the links, so they’re not entirely pointless.
1
The problem is generating those daily posts. Newsbot does it automatically. If not I have to do it manually.
RIP D’angelo. Just caught Pino and Blake Mills (and Chris Dave and Sam Gendel) just a couple miles from my house in war-torn Portland. Incredible concert, almost melted into my seat.
I really wanted to see that show in LA but man was that a tough ticket to get a hold of. Every muso in the city was there.
I did a session with Pino last year, had never met him before. Lovely guy. I asked him if there was any more D’Angelo music cooking, and whether they might tour again, and he answered with a kind of resigned “no.” At the time I took it to mean that D’Angelo was going to be taking another long hiatus but in retrospect it seems like he knew that D was very sick and didn’t have much time left.
Ah, now I get the for your enjoyment, daily post title, posted by you , etc. But I would second Raven’s take that if the news never came back, not a loss. So if there was a simpler solution to create a bot that generates a daily thread and that’s all it does, I would be very happy with that.

On an off-topic, as a Mariners fan, I’m not very pleased by what the Dodgers are doing right now. This Athletic headline says it well: “The Death Star Dodgers, backed by rotation’s unreal run, are 6 wins from another parade.”
Raven, the Dodger bullpen is so awful that I would give Seattle at minimum a punchers chance if the two teams meet in the WS. And I’ll be rooting for your guys. When the Yankees are out of it, I always cheer on the team that’s either never won before or hasn’t won in forever. (That’s why my ideal matchup is the increasingly improbable-looking Seattle v. Milwaukee, which would have a juicy added subplot about the Seattle Pilots.)
Russ is signing with Sacramento, per Shams.

Sorry, Raven, but this is fake news. The bullpen isn’t a problem anymore because all the excess starters (Sasaki, Sheehan, Kershaw, plus Glasnow/Ohtani on their throw days) have made the bullpen fine in the post season. Also, the starters don’t need relief.
The Dodger bullpen came real close to blowing game 1 because Sasaki couldn’t find the plate and his velo was down 2 MPH
It’s sort of hilarious that WordPress doesn’t have a function to post a daily thread automatically.
I wouldn’t miss the News Links either.

But they didn’t. If Sasaki’s goanna gift you Treinen you gotta hit that first-pitch meatball. That said, Sasaki pitched perfect 9th, 10th, and 11th innings to close out the Phillies, how many “closers” can give you that? if that’s the weak link in the bullpen that’s supposed to derail the train, I’ll take the over.

gotta be honest, I’m a bit jazzed that we can go in costumes now…although the naked bike ride thing up in portland sounded pretty cool too…
one positive of the moment thing about losing more voting rights: white folks (beyond basic bodily female rights) got skin in the game now…fuckers are bankrupting the country and messin’ with late night television…

Doogie, I wonder what it feels like to have less self-control, much less empathy and compassion, than my house cat (which started out feral and has no self control and wants us all dead).
It probably feels pretty good, to be honest, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that I find someone like that in my life, albeit online…
Thanks again Mike, whatever works best/easiest for you is good with me.

Just in: After nine NBA seasons, New York Knicks guard Malcolm Brogdon has decided to retire from basketball, he tells ESPN. Brogdon became the 2017 Rookie of the Year and 2023 Sixth Man of the Year after being drafted No. 36 in 2016. pic.twitter.com/nablWsQ9mu— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) October 15, 2025
We hardly knew ye!
Kinda weird, but he wasn’t exactly lighting it up in preseason. Evil Novak it is.
Nice of Malcolm to answer the question I asked yesterday
slightly disappointed but it clears things up a little bit wonder if he just didnt feel healthy/like he had it anymore maybe he just lost the desire after so many rehab stints a la andrew luck
Did not see that coming…
okay, let get to what really matters:
I’m okay going in to the season with: jalen, deuce, and clarkson manning the point…not too concerned with either kolek or brogdon…
feels like we’re covered well at the 2 and 3…hopefully KAT and yabu stay healthy, seems though like we need another power forward…see dadiet playing more at the 3 than 4…
would like to see us carry a 3rd center…mitch, huk and let’s give ol’ trey jemison the 3rd a shot…
Very difficult to know when to hang them up. ( see eg. The Answer). Kudos to Malcom.
I believe I noted at the time that, much like Kemba Walker, when Malcolm Brogdon was willing to take a non-guaranteed minimum contract, it was a huge red flag that there was something not fully right about the guy, so this makes a lot of sense, honestly.
He figured he’d give it one last shot, it didn’t click, he’s retiring. Good for him, I say.
And it really is funny that i was JUST saying to someone yesterday, “Wait, is Russ really not signed yet?” What a weird free agency for him.
I knew something was up with Brogdon after watching him start and move awkwardly against Washington. He just doesn’t have it anymore, sadly. Does this mean we get to keep Kolek? Or are we still trying to keep 2 vets? Mathews has been a revelation of sorts. Or maybe McCullar stays too?
Brogdon was probably told he was the odd man out and took the opportunity to retire instead of getting cut.
I’m not happy about this.
It’s not that he retired or would have gotten cut. He looked really slow last game and I got concerned he was pretty much done. The coaching staff knows more than I do. So he probably is done. The problem is that our defense was already highly suspect. Not that he was ever a top defender, but he played defense.
IMO, this is not a good development.
We are swapping Payne/Precious for Clarkson/Yabu. That swap may be a net upgrade, but imo it’s a defensive downgrade. Clarkson or Kolek as backup PG may actually be a defensive downgrade from Brunson (is that even possible?). At least with a healthy Brogdon I could envision someone trying to play defense.
Now they are also talking about giving Mitch games off and managing his minutes when I was hoping he might be in good enough shape to play more minutes this year and protect the 2nd unit at times.
I think the last game was a good look at what our 2nd unit defense is going to be like….non existent.

What’s your favorite memory of the Malcolm Brogdon era?
1
Well, Shamet is now a lock for the roster. Question is whether the FO values having both Shamet and Matthews to the same degree it values having Shamet and Brogdon, or if this saves Dadiet.
No knock on Matthews, but do we really need both Matthews and Shamet?
One or both may almost never play.
IMO, now we Kolek because if we have injuries at PG, someone has to play that position. Kolek was more expendable when Brogdon was in the picture.
what’s weird about Russell Westbrook is that even after 18 seasons and the inability to shoot a basketball well – there will be a lot of kings’ games this season where he’ll be a key contributor to them getting to 30 something wins…
hmmm, saw their season win total prediction at around 33 or 34…they may not even win 30 games…
id rather have mathews and tosan evbuomwan or even mathews and jemison than keep shamet around
He figured he’d give it one last shot, it didn’t click, he’s retiring. Good for him, I say.
He had a nice career, made 130 million dollars, why risk getting hurt again at this point?
remember when we used to have guys on the roster just cuz they cheered well from the bench…
glad to not be that team anymore – oh wait, forgot about pj tucker already…not so far removed from that i guess…
I am skeptical about this development as it’s been portrayed. I don’t see any benefit to Brogdon announcing a “retirement” vs. just asking to be released from his non-guaranteed contract. Sure, he looked slow but he didn’t look completely washed to the point of retirement at 32 years old. I’m guessing it was a (very unnecessary) face-saving out after he was informed that he would not be in the rotation unless or until there was an injury. He had stated definitively in a recent interview that he expected to be in the rotation, when it should have been pretty clear from the start that he wouldn’t be. He would be at best the 11th man (I think even Huk is ahead of him) and would most likely be in for long strings of DNP-CDs. And after the ass-kicking on Monday, where Brown effectively blamed the starters, and Kolek may have actually crept ahead of him on the depth chart, he might have just read the writing on the wall.
There are other possibilities as well. He might have been hiding an injury, or tweaked something, or not in shape, or had a falling out with a player or a coach (he’s a weird guy). Or maybe he demanded a salary guarantee for the year. Or maybe things were triggered by there being no market for Kolek or Dadiet and the team didn’t want to add sweetener to a deal. But he looked like he still could play in a deep bench role, with this team or elsewhere, if he wanted to.
In any case, retirement or faux-retirement, I am glad it happened now instead of later. I hope this means that we are keeping both kids and one of Shamet or Matthews (I don’t really care which one.) I really don’t see any harm in waiting a while before picking up a minimum guy who shakes loose later on. Lots of cuts are going to be happening in the next few days. Maybe Leon heard something about a better fit than Brogdon.
shamet doesn’t really shrink in the moment…useful for the end of the season…
plus he’s already in their team media profiles…keeper for sure…
Yeah, I agree that Shamet is a sure thing, and now it’s all about whether they make a trade to go with another vet.
i think dadiet and diawara are both gone and shamet is hanging on by a thread based on his prior experience with the team kolek likely saved his job with that last game at least for a little while well keep two of mathews tosan mccullar and jemison most likely mccullar and mathews

Malcolm Brogdon: Add him to the list of players we got ten years too late
Raven, the Dodger bullpen is so awful that I would give Seattle at minimum a punchers chance if the two teams meet in the WS. And I’ll be rooting for your guys.
Not me. I’m still angry at Seattle for chanting “Donnie Strikeout” in the 1995 ALDS. To me, and perhaps me only, losing the Sonics was righteous karma. Sorry Raven, I hope you only find joy in basketball this year.
Crazy news about Brogdon. I think a lot of it had to do with pre-empting Leon Rose having to play a forced hand.
The news feed is a “nice to have”. I think I speak for the majority when I say that the discussion and fan analysis is what we all care about.
I’ve got this for a roster:
PG Jalen Brunson / Miles McBride / Tyler Kolek
SG Mikael Bridges / Jordan Clarkson / Garrison Mathews
SF OG Ananoby / Josh Hart / Landry Shamet
PF Carl Anthony-Towns / Guerschon Yabusele / Pacome Dadiet
C Mitchell Robinson / Ariel Hakporti / Alex Len
With a 14 man limit, Len is out.
I would love to see Brown devise a system where the rookies get to play some. Minor roster concern is a lack of bigs.
Bring back original content?
Gnygnyg, that roster is not possible. If we keep both Shamet and Matthews, a trade needs to happen.
I think people overstate Kolek’s defensive troubles. He isn’t big and that is a limitation but he has good athleticism, was a good defender in college, and hasn’t looked bad defensively thus far. His main problem so far is his shot hasn’t translated and he hasn’t adjusted to the speed of the game, so his passing and court vision hasn’t really translated either.
He might never be useful but I don’t think he is terrible from either a defensive or athleticism standpoint.
Doggie I think that has no chance of happening. McCullar is an excellent 2-way deal guy so he’s not going anywhere.
Sorry I meant doogie
I think Kolek is fine as the 3rd string PG, he looks alot better when he’s playing with the real 2nd unit along with some starters mixed in as well like he did towards end of last season when both Brunson and Payne were out.
Deuce and Clarkson playing PG filling in for Brunson or just as the backup PG is also more than fine. Having a healthy, closer to his prime version of Brogdon would’ve been great but honestly this news does nothing to change the outlook of the Knicks for this season.
wow having shamet at sf and dadiet at pf would be very very undersized
I don’t think Kolek has shown much on either end, but I’m good with him being afforded every chance. He’s got some swag and yeah, moxie. Coach Brown said he has to sacrifice his body more, and I’d go a step further and say he has to play a little dirty. I think he has to emulate John Stockton’s game, meaning if he doesn’t have a facial bruise he isn’t playing hard enough.
Dadiet is only an emergency player. I wouldn’t worry much about his size.
No point in moving a young player for 2 SGs. The appeal of Brogdon was his ability to play PG if needed. Stand pat unless someone interesting gets cut. Shamet & Diawara get the last 2 spots (or Matthews & Diawara).
To remind everyone our current 2-way deals are:
* Tosan
* McCullar
* Jemison
We don’t need to make any moves to either keep or lose them. They can play up to 50 games.
Even if it were possible, Mathews is 6’6″ and Shamet is 6’4″ so you’d want to switch those around in terms of SG and SF. Also Dadiet may be 6’9″ but he’s about as strong as Twiggy (reference for those Knicks fans for 40+ yrs). Not a PF, not for a long time, maybe ever.
Not that this really matters, though, as minutes-wise Towns is the backup center. And so on. (e.g., our middle bench guards, Clarkson and Deuce, are both PG and SG, depending on who else is out there.) And I sincerely hope Alex Len doesn’t make the cut. Watching him play basketball is like watching paint dry, if more violent.
Len ain’t happening.
Again, why would they trade Dadiet or Kolek now? There is zero reason for it.
raven i agree with you about dadiet at pf and was a little bit surprised to see that bbref says he played at that position 31 percent of the time in his rookie season obviously small sample size though
hmmm, saw their season win total prediction at around 33 or 34…they may not even win 30 games…
I would bet the over on thirty games

Malcolm Brogdon: Add him to the list of players we got ten years too late
A neat trick, since he only played 9 seasons.
Is it fair to say that Dadiet and Matthews are playing for that last roster spot on Friday?
Is it fair to say that Dadiet and Matthews are playing for that last roster spot on Friday?
Probably not.
We sure Russell Westbrook wasn’t the right guy to sign for the vet min this whole time? If you want someone to handle the ball and create inefficient offense when Brunson sits, he’s been better at it than Jordan Clarkson his whole life.
Just b-refed a head-to-head from last year and man that’s some fugly basketball those two guys played.
Just the thought of Westbrook and Josh Hart taking turns racing full court to the rim and then taking turns bricking threes is something I can never unthink.
I think you need a certain amount of humility to be the 12th man. Doesn’t sound like Russ. I would have been fine with it though.
I’d say Matthews over Shamet? I’m kinda thinking Cam Payne would’ve been better than either tbh, guess he’s probably making the Pacers though 🤷🏾♂️
I think you need a certain amount of humility to be the 12th man.
“Wait, I’m the what?!? Like, as in the dozenth man?? I don’t even have the fingers to count that high. Fuck all a y’alls. You know who I am, man? I’m Malcolm Fucking Brogdon. I was rookie of the year AND 6th man of the year. You know who else can say that? Just me and Ben Gordon man, that’s it, that’s the whole list. 12th man, shee. I’ll tell you this: no one puts Brogdon at the end of a bench, down there with the Nevitts and the Butlers. No one. I quit. No, better yet, I retire. That’s right, quit for good. How you like me now mothafuckas!”
The Clippers’ approach of just signing every useful old player is fascinating to me. They actually look really good in the EXTREMELY short term.

hmmm, saw their season win total prediction at around 33 or 34…they may not even win 30 games…
id rather have mathews and tosan evbuomwan or even mathews and jemison than keep shamet around
Malcolm Brogdon: Add him to the list of players we got ten years too late
pg: brunson mcbride kolek
sg: bridges clarkson mathews shamet
sf: anunoby hart mccullar
pf: towns yabusele
c: robinson hukporti
* Tosan
* McCullar
* Jemison
I would bet the over on thirty games
A neat trick, since he only played 9 seasons.
Is it fair to say that Dadiet and Matthews are playing for that last roster spot on Friday?
