I got nothing basketball-wise today. But I do have an observation, which I offer to the hive as possible eye strain on my part. I haven’t watched many full baseball games these days, but I often cue into MLB.com’s highlights for a few teams I am loosely following, where they show the big plays, usually people getting runs across.

So what is it with players being unable to throw home even sort of accurately? And I don’t mean just outfielders, but cut-off men too. If a second baseman or shortstop can throw accurately to first base, why can’t he throw home accurately? The percent of “way off the line” throws seems nearly pandemic.

I don’t know, they get paid an awful lot, seems a thing they should be able to do. But maybe it’s just me.

Endeth the bitch. Off to go whale-watching, hope all your Saturdays are lovely.

Ohtani might play some right field in the playoffs if he’s used as a closer, so look for accurate throws home from the warning track.

Outfield assists are trending downward for a number of reasons. Over time teams have gotten less likely to send runners aggressively, since the math just doesn’t pencil out. There are also fewer batted balls in play, so fewer opportunities for runners to advance on batted balls to the outfield.

As a result, the outfield arm tool has become less valued, and teams are more likely to stick guys in the outfield who have strong hitting and fielding tools. Of course you prefer to have outfielders with strong arms, and they’re still out there— Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ronald Acuna, Oneil Cruz, and others. But overall the big booming throw from the outfield has been in decline for a while now.

On what excites him about Mike Brown’s new system:
“I’ve talked to [Brown] a lot, and I think the big thing is just going to be a lot of player movement. He’s giving us the foundation, and we’re just going to work off of it. So I’m really excited to see all our creativity with each other that we’ve been working on these last couple months. Really excited to see where it takes us.”

I’m interested to see this new offense.

Facts. – Leon had that Towns trade on ice for months while he was trying to find a longe term solution at center first… – then last minute he went to plan B, – included DDV and closed.

Not one local beat reporter from neither Minnesota or NY, NBA analyst, TV/Radio personality, league insider, national, traditional or new media got the inside scoop…

That’s because Minnesota hid their willingness to trade KAT. Everyone in the NBA knew Leon was trying to get Towns from the first day he took the job.

Everyone also knew he was trying to acquire OG (bc CAA) and Bridges (bc Nova). Neither acquisition was a shock to anyone except the few of you guys who formed an echo chamber around the idea of Toronto and Brooklyn not wanting to trade with us.

I literally told you and Swifty dozens of times before it happened that Howard Beck, Bill Simmons, and Zach Lowe were all discussing Leon’s well known desire to make a Bridges trade and it was clear to everyone following the NBA that Brooklyn had no problem trading with the Knicks if they were the highest bidder.

In addition to the long list of moves everyone saw coming, there’s also tons of moves Leon tried to make that were not well hidden, either:

    – he tried to trade for Mitchell
    – he tried to trade to Kessler
    – he wanted to draft Chris Duarte in 2021
    – he was shopping Mitch last year

And we all know the names of about 20 NBA head coaches and assistant coaches he wanted to interview.

The guy moves as quietly as a bull in a china shop.

And I don’t mean just outfielders, but cut-off men too. If a second baseman or shortstop can throw accurately to first base, why can’t he throw home accurately?

Purely anecdotal, but as a 8 time slow-pitch softball champion, I can say relay throws to home are harder because home plate is behind you on a relay. When you field a grounder, you’re just turning a few degrees to your left to throw. Even a grounder to your right, it’s not a big angle.

But when you’re running out towards the OF for a relay, even if you catch it on the side, your head is making a (somewhat) 180 degree pivot. You’re also less sure of your place on the field. When you get a grounder hit to you, you could probably close your eyes and point to first pretty accurately based on how many steps you had to take in X direction.

That said I had a pretty good record throwing people out at the plate, both as an OF and a relay thrower. Pretty much because it was more important at the level I played at to make an accurate throw than a strong one. I’m guessing MLB isn’t as lenient.

The Knicks are on of four teams starting the preseason a week early because they play exhibition games in Abu Dhabi. I think this is an advantage for them because they can evaluate their new additions and the progress of their young players earlier and longer than other teams. If some of those guys really show out, the Knicks might do a trade because of redundancies.

If Mike Brown gets us running an innovative offense I, uh, am going to be more surprised than most.

Worried it’s going to be OJ Anderson, three yards and a cloud of dust style….

Regarding outfielder arms, I didn’t realize how good an arm Cody Bellinger has. He might not have lived up to the expectations he created with how great he was in his first 3 years but he’s still a very good all around player, hope Yankees keep him after this season.
