A well informed friend, someone who knows an owner and his associates, thinks Ballmer will be forced to sell.
Which I would find very surprising. But he knows more than I do for sure.
I’ll believe that when I see it, even after Pablo’s latest revelation. However mad other teams are at Ballmer for this, billionaire owners do not want to increase the number of precedents for their shiny toys to be taken away from them.
That said, it would be pretty incredible if ownership of the Clippers became a cursed position, like being the drummer of Spinal Tap or Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. The league was so relieved when Ballmer took over for Sterling, and now… this.
big news of the day: i have officially made it to the other side of the DayZ map…
only took me a few weeks to learn how to stay alive for the 10 mile or so journey, just “gearing up” and jogging from the east coast of the map, where you spawn, and making it across the map took pretty much about six hours…
there are vehicles in the game, but that’s higher level kind of stuff to use those, i’m just getting okay making fire and fishing…plus almost all the “good” gear is on the west side of the map…
I’m still (probably) not totally awake, because it took me to the 3rd paragraph to acknowledge you’re talking about a game, Geo. At first i thought you were out there in the wild, living the life. LOL
The league was so relieved when Ballmer took over for Sterling, and now… this.
I don’t think this is outrageous to the point of taking the team away from Ballmer. Can’t they issue a huge penalty? He tried to pay 20M that the rules didn’t allow him to do, if you make him pay 10 times that, i don’t think any of the other billionaires will engage in this. They have the money to do it, but they love money so much that i don’t think they’d risk having to pay such penalties.
The argument, Cyber, is that these rules are in place to keep someone like Ballmer — who’s as rich as all the other owners combined — from wildly outspending them. Part of the reason all these franchises are so valuable is that the Indiana Pacers are in theory on a level playing field with the Lakers. If the richest owners can apply their full financial might, then the value of the smaller market teams plummet. They can’t have that.
Yeah this is a tough one. I agree that Ballmer probably won’t have to sell the team. But he could get a year ban away from the team, a huge fine, and lose the team’s firsts between 2030 and 2035. Also, Kawhi’s agent will probably be banned from the NBA, and Kawhi could get a suspension (not sure how culpable he is here). I’m not sure if Silver would bother to void the contract because that might punish Kawhi too much.
Silver could also decide the Stepien Rule doesn’t apply in this case, and take away all the current picks that the Clips aren’t allowed to trade.
I’m not sure if Silver would bother to void the contract because that might punish Kawhi too much.
How much would it punish him? If he were a free agent next summer, would other teams give him the same contract he currently has with the Clips? On the one hand, he has the injury history. On the other, he’s Kawhi Leonard. Hmm.
Ballmer is so rich it’s a joke. He’s worth more than Gates.
I will believe that the NBA wants him out of the club when it happens.
It should happen sure, but money talks….
So according to Ian Begley, it looks like the Knicks will sign Diawara to a standard contract. I will be very happy if that happens.

Begley says that’s the plan heading into training camp. Things could change. If, for instance, they trade Kolek and not Dadiet, then we might be so tight against the apron that we just have 14 guys, and don’t bother with the rookie minimum.
I recall reading that the maximum fine the CBA allows for cap circumvention is $7.5M. That just wouldn’t be close to enough in this case.
On another note, I’m surprised McCullar hasn’t accepted his qualifying offer yet.
From what I’ve heard, stuff like this is done all the time. The Clippers may have just done it a higher level and then got caught. If that’s true, the other owners are not going to want to get investigated or set some kind of precedent. It’s probably going to be a fine, but picks would sting more than money in this case.
Masterclass by Crawford last night against Canelo. Crawford at +140 was one of the biggest overlays I’ve seen in sports in quite some time. He should have been a significant favorite. I guess Canelo is the bigger name and has a huge Mexican following and that impacted the odds. Both are great fighters, but Crawford belongs on the short list of all time greats in that weight range.
The formula for handicapping boxing is a lot easier than any other sport I’ve looked at. There just aren’t many opportunities unless you want to follow the sport at a very detailed level globally.

Damn, why aren’t we cap circumventing way more?
Canelo is a damn boxing genius, but even he has his limits. Crawford has been flawless at any weight (at 37!), but Canelo has finally lost a tiny step at age 35. That and a reach disadvantage made the difference. But most people I know were picking Crawford in this one.
Strat, I thought that was a reasonable line on Canelo/Crawford for one reason: it is very tough to get scorecards to go in your favor against Canelo. And indeed: two of the three judges had the fight even after ten rounds. Crawford needed to win each of the last two rounds to get that W on the scorecards.
He won it wider than that in reality, but the thumb on the scale for Canelo is a real thing.
Crawford’s performance itself was a marvel, and not just in his exquisite timing, boxing skills, and technique, although those were all impressive. The thing that makes him an otherworldly boxer is his incredible mental toughness. It is impossible to rattle him. If you land a few shots on him, he is going to come back at you with a fury so you can’t build up any momentum. He would not let Canelo take control of the optics of the fight. At most times it seemed like Crawford was in control.
The last two rounds turned out to be crucial, and Canelo was a beaten man by the time those last two rounds came around. He was demoralized. He was still winging big shots, but his technique was ragged and his body language had a lot of “quit” in it. Crawford has a competitive streak and a mean streak that is possessed only by the most elite of fighters. He is just not going to let himself lose. Beautiful fighter, and with the talent level of the sport continuing to wane, I don’t know if we’ll see the likes of him again.

On another note, I’m surprised McCullar hasn’t accepted his qualifying offer yet.
Maybe he was holding out hope that he could win an NBA spot in training camp, which has to be completely dead now.
Crawford’s performance vs Spence was the most impressive I’ve seen by a boxer in years. I wasn’t sure if the jump in weight classes would be too much for him vs Canelo but he looked great last night.
If another team offers McCullar a regular NBA slot, can he go take it? Or do the Knicks have his exclusive rights? I doubt someone would, based on his injury history and flawed game, but I’m curious.
Giants had a 60 yard KO return and 120 yards of offense on their first drive and somehow ended up with 3 points. Hudson broke an NFL record for 4 penalties in one quarter.
Wilson has 153 yards passing in the first quarter…

Same rules as Restricted Free Agents… I’m pretty sure. So another team could offer him a contract up to the max and we would have the option to match or let him walk.
But yeah no idea who’d take him. Maybe some teams didn’t want his dead first year but are interested? We can’t match a minimum right now unless we’re giving up on Shamet/Brogdon, so it’s not like it takes much to steal him away.
Meanwhile the Mets strand five runners in the first two innings.

I haven’t watched an NFL regular season game in at least 3 years. Mostly because I don’t like American Football very much; also because I’m as fair weather of a Giants fan as they come.
The first drive was like somebody described all the reasons I find football hard to watch and manifested them in real-time. But it was also kinda funny! Like, what the actual fuck? They threw so many flags on one play late in a Dallas drive that a zebra ended up tossing his hat.
You can see that the Giants have some good young talent – that Nabers catch was awesome. But the number of dumb penalties was breathtaking. (And within that, the number of “that’s a penalty?” penalties was a subtle reminder that there are other sports on TV today)
I don’t know if the Giants are any good, probably aren’t, but I can watch Skattebro and Nabers for a season and be content. It’s…something, after a long time in the wilderness.
whatcha doin’ suh?
been living that gamer life since about ’79 Cyber 🙂
my friend sharon’s folks’ had that pong game down in the basement…in the computer lab in high school we had these computers that had this lunar landing game on them, you’d get one of those reel printout sheets kind of showing you what’s happening…
didn’t start my own stuff ’til nintendo and the legend of zelda…ha, it’s funny, right now on this chernarus map (about 225 sq km) i’m using a strategy i learned from zelda: riding the edge of the map…
visiting the svyatoy roman ski resort at the moment, staying alive…it’s seems useful to learn some russian/czech words and cyrillic script, finally found a gps receiver a bit ago, along with a tourist map, a compass and you’re pretty much set to get around by foot…
time to log out and head to the “y” with the youngest, just got one of my sons today, that’s like parenting easy mode 🙂
Wink must be laughing his ass off watching how pathetic Bowen’s Giants defense is even with all their talent upfront.
That fucking catch
Kickers can make 64 yard FGs now? That thing would have been good from 70.
In a few years dudes will just be kicking 99s huh?
That kick would have been good from 70 yards
Yeah, don’t generally watch the Giants but this was a good day to tune in. Never seen a kick like that.
Kinda want Dallas to try a 77 yard FG here.
I don’t know if the Giants are any good, probably aren’t, but I can watch Skattebro and Nabers for a season and be content. It’s…something, after a long time in the wilderness.
I’m also satisfied with the incremental progress but the noise around this team is ridiculous. Mara and the season-ticket holders want 9 wins or a regime change.
And next week they have to find a way to keep Chris Jones off their QB. At least Mbow plugged the gaping hole at LT (save the pressure on Wilson’s horrid interception).
Sports were a mistake.
It does seem like Schoen sucks. I just think it would be incredibly dumb to let Daboll draft a QB and then fire him a year later and hand Dart over to another Pat Shurmer or Joe Judge. I would fire the GM and keep the coach but that rarely happens.
Its crazy that the team I currently trust the most are the Knicks. Yankees are insanely talented and that alone ensures they’re still gonna win a ton of games but the only team I root for who I expect to win close games are the Knicks mainly thanks to having Brunson of course.
Hey, at least they scored points this week
Looks like I’ll get to opt out of the NFL once again this year. Thanks, Bears.
That was a great fight last night. Shocked that they had it close going into the 11th – I had Crawford very solidly ahead. I mean, it wasn’t close. It seemed clear that if Canelo didn’t knock him down in the last few rounds, he was done – but I guess the judges saw a different fight.
I mean, really, that wasn’t close! Crawford totally handled him. His counters were amazing.
Looks like we’re working out DSJ who wants to make an nba comeback. I say why not.
Looks like we’re working out DSJ who wants to make an nba comeback. I say why not.
Why not? Because he’s bloody awful and shoots 29.8% from 3 over 908 career attempts and a .479 career TS%.
Yeah but he’s got that dawg in him!
up late, sadly thinking knicks…if we subtract kolek and add both landry and malcom, who are our usable bigs out of the 15:
KAT
mitch
yabu
huk
that doesn’t seem enough for a season plus playoffs, even adding in OG at the 4 for some minutes…seems like shallow depth in the bigs department…
