    “@Eurohoopsnet
Bayern Munich signs Rokas Jokubaitis through 2028”

Shame he didn’t pan out. We could use him this year in that last rookie spot.

Just to elaborate on my take that this is the last year I think Leon will give this iteration of the Knicks, my feeling is that this is the year that we can fully evaluate the potential of the Brunson-KAT pairing. Lots of folks here and elsewhere placed most of the blame on the ceiling they exhibited in the playoffs on Thibs. Whatever Brown is or isn’t, he’s very different than Thibs. So in my opinion, that’s where 100% of Leon’s focus should be, and that there is a real urgency to figure that out this year.

In that sense, I feel strongly that his year is the prime window for this group because it’s not going to get any easier. Teams like Miami, Atlanta, Orlando, and Detriot are not that far below us and have more maneuverability than we do. Indiana and Boston will likely come back strong in 2026-27. Cleveland is a move or two away from being clearly better than us and also has more flexibility.

And in the West, OKC isn’t going anywhere, and both Houston and San Antonio will be formidable going forward. Wemby could break out in 2026 and with a couple of moves, SAS totally disrupt the league.

Still keeping my fingers crossed on Vildoza, though…

Safe to say there will be alot of narratives about the Knicks after their 1st game of the season…

Eh yes and no. Stars are always ready to ask out, and Leon is surely monitoring stars across the league to pair with Brunson in case things go south next year.

KAT can be a team’s 1st or 2nd option for multiple years and OG/Mikal are the 2-way wings every team wants. Giannis is obviously the main attraction, but we can always reset age-wise with guys like Zion, Ja, Chet, LaMelo, Lauri, etc. Or hell, we could even do an LBJ-KAT swap for a year just for kicks.

So yes, it would be disappointing if this core doesn’t make progress under Brown (I think it will), but we will surely have decent options if it doesn’t.

ess, just to clarify, I am saying that this year is the last “jury is out” year for THIS core. I agree that there are moves that can be made to modify (improve) it. My point is that if we come up short this year and it’s obvious that it’s because there is a ceiling to the KAT-Brunson pairing, major moves should be made rather than another year of the same.

I should also say that there are potential unexpected developments that can change the calculus going forward. What if Dadiet turns into a Melo-like player, except with less selfish tendencies and more defense? What if Huk makes Mitch totally expendible, or if Diawara does the same for OG?

Looking at it differently, in 2026, if you can sign extend Mitch now and then put together a package of Mitch, OG, our 2033 pick, some swaps for Giannis, i.e. figure out a way to acquire Giannis without giving up KAT or too much depth because of development from the three kids, that would change the whole calculus.

(PS I’m just procrastinating before tackling a spark plug replacement on my Subaru with 230K miles on the originals…)

The first test is the toughest competition in the conference.

    Via NYPost:

The Knicks, fresh off their first conference finals in a quarter-century, open next season at home against the Cavaliers, the NBA announced Tuesday.

The contest is Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. and was announced as part of NBA’s opening week on ESPN.

Looks like Silver is predictably hyping the Knicks-Cavs narrative. We also will host the Mavs on MLK day.

Ah, being 0 and 1. Joy will be had in Mudsville.

Actually raised a question, though. Given a new coach, likely a new offensive system to some degree, and a new defensive system, so likely new roles and responsibilities for some of the players, how many games do we give Brown before we call for his head? I know the answer is one, because Knicks fans, but what SHOULD it be?

I am in full throated agreement that this is the prime year for this Knicks core. But I don’t think it’s the last year Leon will give them. If this team makes it to the finals and loses, I don’t expect him to break up the band bc other teams are coming. He’ll be slow to react. And when he runs it back the following year and the reality Z-Man described kicks in, that’s when I think (hope) he will make his move.

This reminds me a lot of ‘94 & ‘95. We had that brief window bc Jordan had retired and Shaq & Penny weren’t ready yet. We came close enough in ‘94 for it to be plausible to deny that was the end, and so we denied it. Riley knew it, though, and wanted to retool before it was too late. But we didn’t listen to him, and in ‘95 we lost major ground.

I see history repeating itself: a close loss in the NBA finals this year, followed by run-it-back next year, followed by “oops we shouldn’t have run it back.” And then hopefully a pivot before it’s too late.

The bellwether decision is going to be how we handle KAT’s extension. If we give him one, I think it’s a sure sign that we will not pivot and we will experience a long period of decline (with Brooklyn making out like bandits with our picks). If we don’t give him one, it will give me confidence that we plan to pivot and retool before it’s too late.

They are saying that Doncic lost a noticeable amount of weight and looks much faster. A little fat shaming and bruised ego may turn him into the MVP.

I still don’t trust the Lakers to be good, but I concede that historically they have often found a good path forward and may have done so again.

I wonder how much of Luka’s weight loss is just moving from Dallas to LA. Texas restaurants have the largest steaks and burgers you can find anywhere. LA has wheatgrass and Ozempic.

    FROM SHAMS:

Wyc Grousbeck will no longer stay on as governor as part of the Boston Celtics’ $6.1 billion sale to Bill Chisholm, sources tell me and @ramonashelburne. Plan had been for Grousbeck to remain through 2028. Chisholm assumes governor title and the transfer will be finalized soon.

I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that the new owners don’t want to leave the former owner in charge of the franchise for several more years.

“i like to think that he actually worked at it”

Got to think Luka, as a top athlete and competitor, chafed at the reports of not being in optimum shape. Got away with it in Dallas but not after the trade. Why Nico Harris didn’t threaten to fat-shame him with the beat writers is a mystery to me, since the trade accomplished that, but with Dallas in a worse position.

I’ve spent more time in Dallas than I’d like to have, and the food is no bigger or more “unhealthy” than in LA. If the reports of Luka liking his beer and hukah are true just cutting out the bread water alone will have enormous results. If he were to have upgraded from Scotty to LaForge in the engine room he could easily look way more healthy in very short order. I hope he has… reduced inflammation and nimbler feet will extend extend his career physically and mentally. Whether he’s training all that the universe has gifted him more effectively will play out on the court. He could be built like Ven Wallace on the outside and still not like the taste of brocolli or defense.
