So if we have two roster spots left, I think one of them should be a big, maybe Nnaji or Diawara. We have Towns, Yabusele, Robinson and Hukporti on the roster. It’s a physical
Position and injuries happen. I think we need at least one more.
So let’s look at it another way:
Limited on offense rim-running rim-protecting bigs: Mitch, Huk
Limited on defense strong offense bigs: KAT, Yabu
All-offense/no-defense undersized lead guards: Brunson, Clarkson, Kolek
Big 3(+)-and-D wings: OG, Dadiet?
Small 3(+)-and-D wings: Mikal
Small Swiss army knife wings with limited offense: Hart, McCullar
Undersized defensive combo guards: Deuce
So, what else do we need? Some of the answer depends on whether any the young guys are actually playable.
-If Huk is not ready, you need another defensive big. Nnaji is too raw to be trusted here imho. Jock Landale, anyone?
-If Kolek is not ready, you can probably get away with Deuce and Clarkson as your backup PGs but it isn’t ideal. Westbrook, anyone? Brogdan? Delon?
-If Dadiet is not ready, you have a depth issue at the large wing spot but I I guess can use Yabu or Hart there in a pinch. I hope Diawara gets a look but Boucher would be an excellent pick-up for this role.
-If McCullar is not ready, you don’t have another player who does what Hart does, particularly rebound from the 3 spot. Westbrook, anyone? Payton?
Bottom line: it’s hard to know how to fill those final spots without knowing which (if any) of the young guys would be ready for prime time in a pinch.
Big names: Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Al Horford, Ben Simmons
Veteran lead guards: Malcolm Brogdon, Cameron Payne, Monte Morris, Delon Wright, Elfrid Payton, Jordan McLaughlin
Important veterans: Gary Payton II, Trey Lyles, Amir Coffey, De’Anthony Melton, Markelle Fultz, Malik Beasley
Young guys to take a chance on: Bol Bol, Bones Hyland, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Bryce McGowens, Wendell Moore Jr., EJ Liddell, JT Thor, Brandon Boston Jr., Jared Butler, Caleb Houstan
Mentors: Kyle Lowry, Patty Mills, Tristan Thompson, Taj Gibson, James Johnson, DeAndre Jordan
Big men: Chris Boucher, Thomas Bryant, Marvin Bagley, III, Moe Wagner, Jaxson Hayes, Bismack Biyombo, Alex Len, Kai Jones, Charles Bassey, Jock Landale
Plumlees and Zellers: Marshall, Miles, Cody, Tyler, Luke
2 spots left? Easy. Sign Wright and Tucker to vet min deals and let the chips fall where they may. The roster is already practically set. We are just waiting on Mike Brown to select his assistants now
Guys I’d be interested at the minimum:
Bigs: Horford, Wagner, Landale
Wings/shooters: Boucher, Burks, Walker IV, maaaybe Beasley (the gambling thing is ugly but not heinous, and the dude can light it up!)
Guards: Fultz, CP3, Lowry
“2 spots left? Easy. Sign Wright and Tucker to vet min deals”
I believe only one of the remaining spots can be used for a vet due to the hard cap. The other has to be for a “rookie.”
“Bottom line: it’s hard to know how to fill those final spots without knowing which (if any) of the young guys would be ready for prime time in a pinch.”
One of the side benefits of replacing Thibs. Good to have new sets of eyes evaluating the youngins’. And if one of those sets belongs to Borrego even better.
IMO Wright, Payne and Shamet are all somewhere between 2nd and 3rd string players. If they are your backups you might be looking for an upgrade (though I think Wright at his best is more), but If they are 3rd string, that’s actually pretty strong. I’m not sure how many veteran slots we have left and what these guys would cost. I’m also not sure if any of our young players is ready to play backup (Kolek?, Huk?) but who we add should probably be dependent on what the coaching staff thinks of the young players and what we need.
Criteria for filling that last vet roster spot:
-position of need
-good locker room/bench presence even if not playing
-can move into rotation as needed without killing the team, especially in playoffs
It’s hard to determine what position is most needed given our current situation, especially with a new coach (if Thibs was still here, it would be more moot since his rotations were so predictable)
strat, I think that if any of Kolek (24), Huk (23), or McCullar (24) are not ready to be at least playable 3rd stringers this year, they probably will never be. All have had a taste of the NBA and now have a full off-season to prepare, and all are old enough to not expect much more improvement. If they aren’t good enough to be better than what you can get at the vet’s minimum in any given year, I don’t see the point of dreaming on them.
Dadiet, Diawara, Nnaji and I guess Pate are all still young enough to dream on, although I don’t have much hope for the last two.
Just to be argumentative on this lovely holiday morning, I believe that older rookies have a bit longer runway that you’re giving them credit for because of their late access to top-level learning (e.g., the professional league) has come a bit later. It ain’t much, but I don’t think Kolek or Huk are anywhere near where they’ll wind up. I also think both are likely to be perfectly cromulent third-stringers this year (i.e., limited but playable for short bits in the right circumstances — Huk might be second string already, as with you, what I saw from him in those late games before the injury was impressive, if tiny sample size). Can’t pick McCullar out of lineup with a gun to my head, so whatever.
Also, for those who read this site and glaze over periodically when certain topics come up, Macri has a nice attempt at Caps and Aprons for Dummies today.
strat, I think that if any of Kolek (24), Huk (23), or McCullar (24) are not ready to be at least playable 3rd stringers this year, they probably will never be.
As far a Huk is concerned he seemingly had already reached Thibs exalted circle of trust.
He just turned 23 an missed an entire year from 9/21/22 with a torn Achilles, and then an additional 2 months when he tweaked a knee cartilage after achieving the circle of trust.
Hadn’t realized it was Subway Series time. The Mets apparently starting pitchers are Kolek, Huk, and McCullar. That should make it fun.
“It ain’t much, but I don’t think Kolek or Huk are anywhere near where they’ll wind up.”
I would modify this to say that what they showed last year isn’t necessarily anywhere near where they might wind up.
However, I strongly believe that 23-24 year olds in their second year are pretty much what they are going to be beyond that. Of course there are exceptions to that tendency, but in most cases that’s what happens.
I agree on Huk in that he showed brief flashes of excellent 2-way play, and his size-athleticism package is certainly in line with what a rim-running/protecting big needs. But it’s not rocket science, if he doesn’t show marked improvement in play-reading/decision-making/footwork/fouling this year, i.e. picking up where he left off pre-knee issue, he probably won’t ever be much of an asset. I have faith that he will, so long as he stays healthy.
As to Kolek, I definitely have my doubts. He needs to show me that he can defend at this level, and create shots for himself when guarded 1-on-1. TJ McConnell is an example of a guy who would not be in the league if he couldn’t do these two things. He showed he could do them very early on, and although he was advantaged by playing on the Hinkie Sixers in full tank mode, he likely would have shown that anywhere even in a smaller role because he was physically capable. And while his overall game has improved, he is still pretty much who he was in his second year, just doing the good things more and the bad things less. Same to a degree with Jose Alvarado. What I mean is, I need to see that Kolek is physically capable of playing significant minutes at this level if called upon to do so. If he doesn’t show that this year, I doubt that he ever will.
With McCullar, his health is the biggest issue, as he has a positive physical profile, plays good D, and has some limited offensive skill that needs a 3pt shot to round out. His limiting factors seem different than Kolek’s. But if he can’t hit a spot-up 3, he is a very poor man’s Josh Hart, i.e. a dime-a-dozen scrub you can pick up on the waiver wire any offseason.
“Hadn’t realized it was Subway Series time.”
Since both teams have been in freefall, should be fun!
Don’t disagree with you on Kolek. Frustrating that most of the data comes from the last two minutes of blowouts, when there’s like two shots to be taken by a bevy of overeager bench fodder in the first 1.5 minutes before the last 24 seconds of dribbling out the clock.
Getting better information there, along with the great joy of seeing how polarizing Clarkson will be this year, especially on this site, are two of my favorite upcoming narratives for the season.
Z-man
I agree with you.
I have a bit of an emotional attachment or extra rooting interest in Kolek because I’d love to see those passing skills on the court more. But he if can’t defend or score efficiently then he’s not an NBA player. He has to show some kind of improvement this year.
I also like Huk. He shows flashes of things I like.
The others I haven’t seen enough of to have any opinion.
BTW another PG who peaked at age 24 was Jeremy Lin…
Getting better information there, along with the great joy of seeing how polarizing Clarkson will be this year, especially on this site, are two of my favorite upcoming narratives for the season.
I’m going to lay off the Clarkson criticism. I was hard on Payne when we first signed him because he’s not my type of player, but he grew on me. Clarkson deserves the same chance even though I feel the same way about him right now. Plus Z-man is probably right about the injury being a problem last year.
please please please do not give tucker a roster spot this is our perfect opportunity to end the cycle of having wasted roster spots for guys who are literally never going to see the floor nothing against pj but please let us use all of roster spots on guys who will at least get on the floor when we are up by 25 with 5 minutes remaining
if we can keep delon then keep delon if not then give nnaji a try preferably both

happy beach day sir clarence
Important veterans: Gary Payton II, Trey Lyles, Amir Coffey, De’Anthony Melton, Markelle Fultz, Malik Beasley
Melton is a solid player, but not sure how much sense he makes now. Beasley would be an incredible steal if he gets cleared.
howdy clarence 😊

soooooooo, have you watched Mobland yet?
got another one for ya – Smoke…so often a show is defined by the “bad guy” in the show, Smoke has 2 good ones so far…
if beasley gets cleared i would think the pistons would keep him
Even if he is cleared and you could get him, the issue with Beasley is that he doesn’t seem like the kind of player would be okay with being out of the rotation. So who does he replace? Clarkson?
Tell you what, though…a second unit of Deuce, Clarkson, Beasley, Hart, and Yabu could wreak havoc on other benches for 5-10mpg…or you could keep Hart with the starters and throw Mitch in there…
But unless it’s a no-brainer (and Beasley is another no-D type, so he’s not) I would use that spot on a situational player. The only way I’d tinker with the top-9 right now is via trade, unless something crazy happened like the Lakers waiving LeBron.
I’d be absolutely shocked and disgusted if they brought PJ back in any capacity other than deputy assistant coach. He’s more cooked than my poor hydrangeas.
Bol Bol has been fairly decent the last few years despite playing in shitshow Phoenix. He needs a lot of polish, but I think he could eventually become a nice bench piece.
“Frustrating that most of the data comes from the last two minutes of blowouts, when there’s like two shots to be taken by a bevy of overeager bench fodder in the first 1.5 minutes before the last 24 seconds of dribbling out the clock.”
I wish he had spent more time in the G-League, where although the skill level is much lower, there are a lot of players with NBA size and speed, i.e. athletic wings who can’t shoot, scrappy but undersized PGs, one-dimensional rim protectors, etc. He should have regularly dominated down there instead of spending most of the season racking up DNP-CDs on the bench.
I’d be fine with Bol Bol, although is seems like he is an injury waiting to happen.
Beasley can shoot and would def help get the Knicks attempts up. Beasley shot 42% from 3 last season, had a 59 TS last season and a 60 TS the season before that. He could play the Donte role on this team offensively. It would’ve been nice to give him some of Josh Harts minutes last season .
Deuce, Clarkson, Beasley, Hart, and Yabu
That 5 could certainly do damage against opposing bench units
Fun with Tiny Sample Sizes:
Kolek 4 Game G-League Good Stuff:
36 minutes per, 4.8 rebs, 10 assts, 18 ppg.
Kolek 4 Game G-League Not So Good Stuff:
.394 FG%, .292 3P%, TS% .518.
Will the real Tyler Kolek please stand up, please stand up…
Kolek is a really good passer, not sure anything else on offense translates.
No market for 24 ppg on 58 TS
@Fullcourtpass
There is no market for Cam Thomas, per @JakeLFischer
Cam Thomas and Bones Hyland are cut from the same cloth. The Enes Kanters of shooting guards. They’ll get picked up by someone after all other options are gone…unless they want statues of themselves in China.
“Beasley can shoot and would def help get the Knicks attempts up. Beasley shot 42% from 3 last season, had a 59 TS last season and a 60 TS the season before that.”
Unfortunately, it is very likely Beasley won’t get cleared. A read of his financial woes and it is textbook behaviour for either a serious drug or gambling habit. He plays way to well for it to be drugs. And since there is an investigation on unusual betting activity on his in game performance, it does not look good. At all. Sad.
Happy beach day!
Just came off a nice hour walk along the beach in Fire Island (Saltaire). Perfect day… sunny, 76F and a gentle zephyr at about 8mph. A great day to be alive!

Looks like Mo and Melton are gone. Beal might get bought out. Not that interested.
Nice, Bob!
Melton is still on the market, but seems like the Lukas are front runners to get him.
Cam Thomas and Bones Hyland are cut from the same cloth. The Enes Kanters of shooting guards. They’ll get picked up by someone after all other options are gone…unless they want statues of themselves in China.
Am I taking crazy pills? Thomas ranked 14th in OEPM last year, right between Jayson Tatum and Devin Booker.
He’s only a little worse defensively than Booker, or Brunson for that matter.
Kanter was fool’s gold because he was terrible defensively and his no-spacing offense didn’t provide as much value as it seemed. This isn’t the same thing.
Cam Thomas would be an intriguing longshot bet for the 2026 scoring title. Not like there’s anyone else on that Nets team who is going to be shooting.
There’s a reason no one wants him. The answer seems pretty simple to me. You figure it out.
maybe it is his 108 offensive rating and 118 defensive rating
Jalen Brunson’s 4yr DRAPM is -1.5.
He’s 738th in the league.
A godawful defender.
Cam Thomas is at -3.5.
He’s 902nd out of 918.
“No one wants him” seems like kind of a stretch. He might not get a big contract but somebody’s going to sign him.
If truly nobody wants him, sign me up for Cam Thomas on the vet min anytime. He can have Dink Pate’s minutes
Melton is a solid player, but not sure how much sense he makes now. Beasley would be an incredible steal if he gets cleared.
I think Melton would be the absolute best possible scenario but it seems he is most likely going to the Lakers. If he hadn’t had health issues the past two seasons he’d probably be looking at a $15-20 million dollar a year contract. He is an solid-enough scorer, a good passer and rebounder, a top 10-15 POA defender, and has never averaged less than 2.1 stls per 36. He can also guard 1-3 and can switch up if needed. I’d take him over Beasley in a second.
Plus if Beasley gets cleared he’s signing for much more than the vet minimum.
Yeah, probably a low blow by me to lump Cam in with Bones, he’s a legitimate volume scorer who could definitely help a team off a bench. Does seem that he has a b-ball IQ problem that might be turning teams off. Worth more than the minimum…maybe 3/$24M or so, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he made either more or less than that.
Nice competitive opener to the Yanks-Mets series, lots of dingers!
Someone posted on twitter a good point about the Knicks interviewing MIN’s Micah Nori – they had the opp to pick his brain about how to best utilise KAT and get some of that MIN intel
As noted, Beasley’s not getting cleared, so best not to even think about him.
Beasley was awful in the Knicks series. Kinda makes one wonder at this point.
Geo, I thought there were some very compelling casting choices and while I like Guy Ritchie in theory it’s not always my cup of tea. Very good at what he does though.

fwiw Clarkson struggled with plantar fasciitis last year, and had a season-ending procedure. Maybe that should be included in judging the dropoff in his performance, particularly in attacking the rim for dunks. Maybe not.

Nice, Bob!
Melton is still on the market, but seems like the Lukas are front runners to get him.

Sounds lovely, Bob.
East river giving everything it has tonight.
