What an incredibly satisfying experience that game was. Time will tell whether the team has actually turned the corner, or if these last two games have just been the latest instances of High-Variance Theater from this squad. But damn, we destroyed one of the best defenses in the league.

My favorite moment was this one: https://bsky.app/profile/nbanewyork.bsky.social/post/3lchzsojwnc2k

    As Fred put it:

    ‪@fredkatz.bsky.social‬
Karl-Anthony Towns just invented a new type of hesi move, shrugging at a ref mid-dribble after not getting a call he wanted and then surprising Moe Wagner by spinning into a fadeaway when Wagner thought Towns wasn’t paying attention.

KAT is incredible on offense. And we are definitely nearing a “whole greater than the sum of the parts” effect on that end, where Brunson only occasionally has to go into superhero mode, because the starters and Deuce are all capable of scorching the nets.

All this garbage time is killing our SRS.

It all started with the Brunson/KAT PnR during the first quarter. This was the first time all season it felt like it lived up to the hype. The duo played methodically, knifing through the defense, until the damn burst and every Knick got everything they wanted on offense.

Brunson had 8pts & 3asts on 3-6 shooting and 2FTs in the 1st thanks to a couple devastating crossovers, a lethal fake pass to KAT, hitting Mikal for a cutting jumper after forcing rotations, and a couple pocket passes to KAT.

KAT finished with 9 screen assists for 19pts and enough razzle dazzle to audition for the next And1 Mixtape Tour.

    So it’s…

    1. Bucks
    4. Magic

    2. Knicks
    3. Hawks

    1. Thunder
    4. Mavs

    2. Rockets
    3. Warriors

3 of the 4 matchups are compelling, and then there’s Bucks-Magic.

The Hawks are frisky, having beaten Cleveland and Boston already.

You can make a logical argument that this team is better off avoiding the trip to Vegas and not adding an 83rd game to the schedule. I don’t actually want to make that argument, but I recognize its validity.

Seems like Josh Hart has pulled on okie doke on the hoops world when, during pre-season, he lamented that he did not know his role on the team to having his best season ever.

What’s crazy is that this team has been winning by methodically going through the offense, great passing and low turnovers, but last night we had 17 turnovers and it didn’t matter, still bulldozed the best defense in the east.

Great stuff, balanced scoring, and I’m personally hyped to get this group some early meaningful-ish games in the cup.

It’s one of the most insolent things I have ever seen on a basketball court.

Since I am married to a Greek, hubris hubris hubris, but I fucking loved that…

It’s one of the most insolent things I have ever seen on a basketball court.

I mean, he wasn’t wrong! Moe committed, at minimum, two fouls on that play without anything being called. The beauty of what KAT did is that he managed to simultaneously call out the ref about it while still making a brilliant basketball play. Moe clearly expected him to do what players often do in those situations: give up on the play and keep complaining. And KAT took advantage of that expectation to deke Moe out of his shoes and stick a pretty turnaround jumper. LOVE it.

Looks like ATL and MIL are settling in, someone’s winning streak getting broken tonight.

‘3 of the 4 matchups are compelling, and then there’s Bucks-Magic.’

You don’t think it’s compelling to see if Moe can get Giannis to punch him in the nose?

That was a very impressive performance on both sides of the ball last night. At its best this team can compete with anybody. They are rounding into form and I expect them to have a big December.

Talk about Jekyll and Hyde teams, Atlanta has beaten Boston and Cleveland (twice), but also lost to Washington twice.

    Forget 83rd game.

They not losing to Trae Young at the garden again and with Boston out, NYK must come out the east. Plus, its not like this fan base has grown immune to wining so raising this trophy is a no big deal for us.

They are rounding into form and I expect them to have a big December

    Facts.

    First 20, it was 12:8.
    Next 20, will be 15:5.

    That’s 55 win pace.

Then we get Mitch and Laundry back + another vet to give starters some rest. Thibs needs to chill out with this 8 man rotation.

Frankly I don’t get why the finals wouldn’t count in the standings for something. Maybe give the winner guaranteed home court in the firat 3 rounds of the playoffs and the loser first 2 rounds? Or automatic playoff berth if they get to the play-in? Or just make it the 82nd game with just another league-wide consolation game?

And the stats should definitely count.

Other than that, it’s kind of a glorified all-star game with same injury concerns. The meaninglessness of it is just embarrassing.

Another twist would be to make it so no player could play more than 20 minutes in the final game…that would make it so the scrubs who would benefit most from a win would actually have to earn it!

Our old friend Landry Fields really hit a home run by trading for 21yo Dyson Daniels plus picks for the vastly overrated DeJounte Murray. He’s similar to Suggs in that he can’t shoot a lick, but is a defensive menace. I was very impressed with the way he guarded Brunson when we lost to them. Now there is no longer competition for the ball so Trae can do his thing and they can throw lots of guys with defensive length at opponents.

They will probably be held back somewhat by Risacher and Daniels being too young and not having any real seasoning, but they shouldn’t be taken lightly on any given night, or even in a first round series. As mercurial as Trae is, he can win playoff games all by himself.

That was a FUN win. The KAT turn around baseline jumper had shades of Ewing and I AM HERE FOR IT.

We got a chance this month to rack up some wins, get Precious back, work on the defense and establish ourselves as one of the top teams in the league. Then hopefully incorporate Mitch in January and let’s go.

Fuck it. I want to win the cup. I know it’s meaningless but that half a million is not meaningless to Sims, Payne, McBride, and all the other dudes on the bench who are making the bare minimum compared to our starters. I loved what Brunson said about that, wanting to win it for them.

Just a very satisfying win. I’d say the best of the season so far.

Yeah, I think that was a great haul for Atlanta but to be fair, my verdict on DeJounte is still TBD. Clearly didn’t work with Trae, but he is only 4 games back from a broken hand.

“Mikal Bridges led the team in plus/minus for the second game in row and sank 8-of-13 from the field while playing strong defense.”

Line from Macri. I knew he played a decent game again, but hadn’t realized that good.

Watching Hart take on Suggs on a fast break was fun — irresistible force against immovable object. Hart lost, but always a good time watching the battle of titanic god-men. Plus they could be twins, right down to the headband. Sort of amazing that Josh is a much better shooter…

Line from Macri. I knew he played a decent game again, but hadn’t realized that good.

Small Sample Size Theatre: Over the last two games, Mikal is plus-73.

Why are we talking about the Knicks when RJ Barrett had such a good game last night? 😉

Seriously, the offense was already very good, but I think it’s starting to really hit stride now. There are going to be nights when we miss a bunch of 3s and will stink out the joint, but generally I think the offense is going to be a bit more consistent.

The defense is still a work in progress. I only screamed at the TV a few times last night. That’s progress.

“Yeah, I think that was a great haul for Atlanta but to be fair, my verdict on DeJounte is still TBD. Clearly didn’t work with Trae, but he is only 4 games back from a broken hand.”

He’s a good player, just a) not worth what ATL gave up for him (or what E thought we should give up to get him) and b) not nearly as good of a fit with Trae as they had hoped. To pivot and land a 21yo 6′ 8″ defensive wing with offensive upside plus decent picks is a real coup. That Lakers pick by itself could be really valuable!

The young long wing combo of Risacher-Johnson-Daniels is a solid core to build around, especially with the defensive issues inherent in having Trae on the floor. I wonder how long they stick with Trae, he’s only 26 and not earning a shit-ton of money, but maybe they can figure out a way to get some assets for him before he re-ups.

Just want to say a quick “thanks” to Leon for the gorgeous basketball he’s blessed us with

One thing I liked seeing last night was Mikal being a bit more assertive with the ball and trying to drive it a bit. He only took one FT and that was an and-1 on a fadeaway, but there were signs of progress in that area.

I guess the fact that Thibs gave Matt Ryan/Huk/Kolek/Dadiet a total of 15 minutes in a blowout win kind of tells us everything we need to know about how he feels about the Emirates Cup.

KAT also had two blocks last night and I haven’t heard anyone in the media mention that stupid and misleading stat about him lately. (Those blocks wouldn’t have helped him because they were more than 24 inches away from the rim.)

Trae and Murray never made any sense to me. That’s two guys playing a similar position that both do their best work with the ball in their hands. Sure, they can play together, but the idea is to have players that bring different things to the table, compliment each other and make each other better, not take turns doing the same things. The lineups with those two together were pretty bad. Putting DeJounte with Brunson would have been a bigger mistake after seeing the Murray/Trae combo not work out so well and Murray looking like he was slipping a bit defensively.

KAT’s blocks were the kind he tends to get…guys challenging him straight up in the post where he can use his verticality and not have to slide his feet. His issues are with anything requiring advanced lateral movement, footwork, and timing. He also keeps his hands down and reaches and swats too much. His body is often in an off-balance position. He is too often in no man’s land in drop coverage.

Benjy Ritholtz has elaborated on KAT’s defensive issues. He doesn’t sound optimistic that things will change much, feels that the intangibles just aren’t there. I tend to agree with him, but maybe he has some surprising late development, now that he isn’t turned off by Thibs. My more realistic hope is that a) Thibs & Co. (including his high-IQ teammates) can help him make marginal improvements, b) getting Precious and Mitch back will provide options against teams that are built to exploit his weaknesses, and c) continued team gelling on the defensive end, including Mikal rounding into form, will take some pressure off of him.

I guess the fact that Thibs gave Matt Ryan/Huk/Kolek/Dadiet a total of 15 minutes in a blowout win kind of tells us everything we need to know about how he feels about the Emirates Cup.

Or it tells us that he, like the maniac he always is, really cares about the Emirates Cup, and figured the team would have a better chance if the Celtics were knocked out of that field.

“Then we get Mitch and Laundry back + another vet to give starters some rest. Thibs needs to chill out with this 8 man rotation.”

It’s really just plain disrespectful to call the man…….or any man, really……. “Laundry.”

I think KATs issues with defense are primarily related to his slowish reaction time and lack of quickness. That was one reason I was talking about his weight at the very start of the season. I was thinking that if he dropped 10-15 pounds it might make him a little quicker on both sides the way getting fitter helped Jokic. Of course he’d probably lose a little strength and that seems to be coming in handy for him rebounding and finishing. I don’t think he’s going to be able to improve his reaction time and quickness much. He may be able to learn how to position himself better and raise his hands at times.

Hart is third on the team in both total rebound percentage and assist percentage.

Orlando had their starters in even later than we did to ensure they stayed in the cup, it’s at least possible Thibs puts in the kids earlier if it was a normal blowout

Seems to me like KAT is much better when trapping or just flat out switching the pnr instead of playing drop coverage.

I just appreciate screwing the Celtics.

Sweet little article on Cam Payne by Edwards in The Athletic. Seems teammates love him, despite his being a pain in the ass to other teams. My favorite bit:

“For the 15 minutes the Knicks take the floor as a team, all the way until the buzzer sounds for the national anthem, the veteran guard is dancing. Nonstop. He looks like a kid on a sugar rush. No matter the song, Payne is dancing. He gyrates around his teammates, he gets them involved.”

Vecenie’s Game Theory Podcast has a tailor made KB double feature of the Knicks defense, with a lot of OG praise, followed immediately with a segment praising RJ.

I recommend watching it on YouTube because there’s a lot of clips and I don’t know how that useful it would be in audio only.

He does find one PnR with Mikal on Franz that he doesn’t love. Mikal gets over the screen really well but fails to cutoff the passing lane, which screws over Towns with a 2-on-1. He worries what the defense looks like when we need to stop more than the 1 ball handler we can stick OG on.

Also, he really praises the rotations which are much better.

    https://www.youtube.com/live/YzIvjuHeo8k?si=58VP5Jen5B8lKPpm

Towns has terrible lateral movement. He’s sort of deceptively quick when moving forward but it doesn’t translate. I think he’s a tough guy to back down in the post but the rest of the time he’s mostly out of position.

I am interested to see how it looks with Mitch or even Precious out there, not that Precious is Hakeem.

Ultimately, I am on the ride and not getting off. Stylistically it’s not what I would have chosen but it’s hard to argue with the offensive output right now.

I am still disappointed Bridges missed that three after the amazing pass from KAT. Would have been an all-timer of a highlight.

I am still disappointed Bridges missed that three after the amazing pass from KAT. Would have been an all-timer of a highlight.

I’m still in awe of that pass. It was incredible by Towns. So mad at Mikal for missing it. Even the heave at the half didn’t make up for it.

“I think overall, I think the physicality of the game is changing. I think that’s good,” Tom Thibodeau said. “I think it’s good that there’s more of a balance to it. It’ll bring the best out in the competition. And that’s what I think people want to see. They want to see people compete.

“Karl’s a physical guy. As long as it’s consistent and it’s the same way for both teams, I don’t mind that at all. As a matter of fact, I like it.”

    Never change thibs…never change

The 2024-2025 Knicks already have an SRS that is one point higher than the 2023-2024 version of the team. It turns out a good offense can take you a long way.

On the one hand, OG is not a good rebounder. That’s a ding to his value in the AIO metrics. A legitimate ding.

On the other hand, that’s a weakness that really does not hurt our team in particular, because we have the outlier Josh Hart playing alongside him most of the time, giving PF level rebounding out of the wing position. Our defensive rebounding as a team is quite good, and our offensive rebounding is average but irrelevant, as we are the #1 offense in the league and have an elite eFG%.

I expected our defense to hold up against Orlando minus Banchero and the fact they don’t shoot well. But I did not expect the offense to be so damn good against their defense. If that was our ceiling on offense, then we have no worries on that end. If we don’t reach that ceiling, we will still have a great offense. I just wish Mikal didn’t miss that 3 off that playground pass by KAT

I knew we had an easy schedule coming up. I didn’t realize it was this easy:

The Knicks have the league’s easiest December schedule regarding cumulative opponent winning percentage by a wide margin, with 10 of their 14 games against teams that have losing records through Tuesday. That includes two games each against the two teams — New Orleans and Washington — that rank in the bottom three on both ends of the floor. They began the month with a 33-point win over the Pelicans.

More here: https://www.nba.com/news/nba-storylines-strength-of-schedule-rankings-for-december Let’s start stacking those wins, fellas.

Bad stuff happens in games sometimes, but a 9-2 or at least 8-3 record is very doable in the next 11 games.

They should just win a lot now, because there are some brutal stretches ahead. For example, Feb 21st-Mar 10th:

    @Cavs
    @Celtics
    Sixers
    @Grizzlies
    @Heat
    Warriors
    @Lakers
    @Clippers
    @Kings

I know there’s been some concern about Mitch and Precious coming back and, while improving the defense, hurting the offense.

IMO, I think its a small sacrifice worth taking for the good of the team, especially in the playoffs. Neither are going to be starters, but for me I’m noticing that this team can basically destroy anyone if the offense is clicking but if the offense is not clicking or even if they have a slow quarter or half, then we can’t come back because we cannot get stops.

So being able to up the defense by having Mitch and Precious come in and help us get stops when we’re down…that’s going to be important in certain games. Cause so far we’ve seen games where the offense sucked for the first quarter or even half for whatever reason but then got it going later in the game but they just could not get stops.

Not sure if any of that makes sense but right now we seem like a very good front riding, fair weather team that does EXTREMELY well when things are going well but doesn’t necessarily handle being behind.

Bad stuff happens in games sometimes, but a 9-2 or at least 8-3 record is very doable in the next 11 games.

By my count we should have 13 more games in December

We definitely handle being behind, but we may not always handle it well.

By my count we should have 13 more games in December

I didn’t count the potential cup semifinal and final there, I should have made that clear (as we don’t know who the opponent will be).

After last night our DRtg is 21st, but only 1.2pts out of 15th.* Nothing makes you feel good about a defense like the 23rd, 26th, and 29th ranked offenses for 3 straight games. Of course, we gave up a 120 ORtg to the 25th offense in Utah a couple games before, so I’m calling this significant improvement.

*Per the more accurate NBA.com, by BKRef we’re doing even better

Mikal Bridges has the best +/- in the entire NBA.

    Mikal Bridges is washed.

OG’s rebounding was more significant coming into the season because we could live with a SF getting a little over 5 rebounds per game, but we were shifting him to PF and replacing Randle who is a very good rebounder for the PF position. So it was critical to make up that gap or rebounding could become a major issue. That’s where my screaming for Hart to start came in. The other thing I expected was Towns at C to rebound better for us than he did next to Gobert. But he’s rebounding like a demon. Instead of just getting back to where he was at C prior, he’s rebounding better than ever. And it’s not just that we have some weakneses there. He’s really good on the boards.

“I should have made that clear”

marechal, as the chief cup optimist I was half joking and promise to not hold it against you even if the cup is lifted!

+1 to Strat on Towns’ rebounding. He’s 2nd in the NBA in DRB% and 14th in ORB%. 2nd in TRB% to Nurkic by literally a tenth of a percentage point.

And it’s not empty calories rebounding, it’s helped us be an above average rebounding team with maybe the worst rebounding PF and guards in the league. Obviously Hart is a factor there but he’s rebounding at his usual rates. Towns has really stepped it up in this area.

Rebounding is still the area I think AIOs are at their wonkiest. On one hand, it is absolutely an important aspect of basketball. Ending possessions and/or creating new ones for your offense remains essential.

On the other, unlike basically every other skill, at the individual player level it can be 100% mitigated by teammates. If you’re a bad shooter, that can be exploited even if your teammates are Steph Curry and Ray Allen. But if you’re a bad rebounder, as best I can tell, it’s pretty much a non-issue as long as you have teammates able to gobble them up. Maybe you cost your team a few rebounds at the margins, but I get the impression most AIOs are way too harsh on guys who just let their teammates get them, for either skill or scheme reasons.

OG’s impact on his team’s rebounding rate has never been anything more or less than marginal. The Knicks’ TRB% is all of 0.4% worse with him on the floor this year, but it was 2.5% better with him on the floor last year (and Toronto’s was 2.8% better with him on the floor last year). In all of his other seasons he’s made a very small positive or negative impact. It just doesn’t seem like a serious problem at all.

Mikal Bridges has the best +/- in the entire NBA.

    OG is 8th.

    I’m seeing SGA as #1. I’m using NBA.com

(Apologize in advance for the bad lining up below.)
I actually see SGA at #1 in plus/minus, and OG down at #9. Still pretty damn good!

    Plus-Minus
    1. gilgeous-alexan Okl 229
    2. tatum,jayson Bos 213
    3. mobley,evan Cle 192
    4. white,derrick Bos 188
    5. sengun,alperen Hou 164
    6. brooks,dillon Hou 160
    7. brown,jaylen Bos 158
    8. jokic,nikola Den 157
    9. anunoby,og NYK 153
    10. dort,luguentz Okl 152

Obviously, there are different ways of measuring this. The complex-to-navigate NBA.com stats pages have something a bit different.

For what it’s worth I think it was Alan who pronounced that Mikal had a +73 in his last two games, or something like that…

Sweet little article on Cam Payne by Edwards in The Athletic. Seems teammates love him, despite his being a pain in the ass to other teams. My favorite bit:

His over the top celebration in the 2nd quarter is exactly why I used to hate the guy (he did the same thing in a playoff game against when he was on the Sixers)

But now that he’s a Knick? I find it totally appropriate and justified and he should do it even more (-:

Mikal Bridges this season in home games is averaging 20.4 PPG on 64 TS% with a +20.6 net rating. On the road he is averaging 13.3 PPG on 48 TS% with a -1.1 net rating.

It’s not an accident that all the top plus minus guys are on teams with the best records in the NBA. Having good teammates helps your plus minus.

“It’s not an accident that all the top plus minus guys are on teams with the best records in the NBA. Having good teammates helps your plus minus.”

I couldn’t help but think the exact same thing as I perused the list. It seemed fairly obvious—OKC (2 guys), BOS (3), and HOU (2) dominate the list (which is what one would expect), and then throw in a CLE guy (although not one of the ones you’d expect), a DEN guy, and a Knick (again, not one of the players you’d expect). At least we have one guy on the list, so that’s gotta mean *something* good.

I got my +/- numbers on Bridges from here:

That link shows Bridges having played 13 games this season when he’s actually played 21. Statmuse has a tendency to hallucinate.

Good point, Pags. Most if not all of the guys on that list have a lower-than-actual games total. Maybe the list was perfectly correct 1.5 or 2 weeks ago, and they just haven’t updated it yet.

Good point, Pags. Most if not all of the guys on that list have a lower-than-actual games total. Maybe the list was perfectly correct 1.5 or 2 weeks ago, and they just haven’t updated it yet.

No, AIs are just dumb. Or, if we’re being nice, as Pags is by using the technical term, they hallucinate

The name “Brunson” went up 161 percent for dogs in 2024, according to Rover.com.

    Just sayin’…

Fun tidbit that is very likely a consequence of Precious and Mitch being unavailable:

We are currently the greatest FT shooting team in NBA history at 84.1%!

If only KAT didn’t get the reverse-Embiid treatment from the refs! I wonder if part of the reason for our high eFG% and low FT rate is that fouling us is a horrible proposition since it sets our Ortg for the possession to ~170.

No, AIs are just dumb. Or, if we’re being nice, as Pags is by using the technical term, they hallucinate

yep, everything is gonna work out just fine with the AI stuff…

Y’all may know this already, but I just glanced and the Knicks as a team are shooting 39.1% from three so far this year, even with Mikal at a still-subpar 33% (and Gravedigger at 25%…!). Only the Celtics are doing better (and not by much).

Depending on what site you believe, the league average is still hovering around 36%…

The 76ers will be without both Paul George and Joel Embiid for Wednesday night’s game against the Magic, the team announced.

Have they actually played together in any games yet? Embiid has only played in four games, and PG-13 has played in 10.

Only the Celtics are doing better (and not by much).

Wtf? The Celtics are 8th in the league at .375, though they lead in attempts by a mile. CLE is #1 at .402.

What’s the the fugazi stats today, Raven? Have you…. have you been an AI this whole time!?

Guilty as charged, Pags! (Although I think this is my first disreputable stat of the day…)

I went back after your swat and found all KINDS of different rankings depending on site. Many of them seem to have us second, though, which I suppose was my point.

I did find a site that had Celtics 8th, as you point out. Which actually surprises me, but fuck the Celtics.

I guess it’s too much to ask for various sites to all use the same calculations for a given metric, which is ridiculous.

not sure if this is really you or not raven, but just wanted to share one of my all time fave dream jobs: being a zookeeper, in particular caring for the rhinos…

give me a funky zookeeper hat/uniform and a shovel, post me up by the rhinos, i’d be good for a while i believe…

whether you really are in to it or not – do you have a favorite zoo creature raven?

Have they actually played together in any games yet? Embiid has only played in four games, and PG-13 has played in 10.

one i believe, the last one embiid got injured in…actually, make that: more injured…

The Knicks are currently the best free throw shooting team in history
After going 20/20 last night from the FT line, the Knicks are now shooting 84.08% (338/402) from the charity stripe. Their top 5 in FTA (Brunson, KAT, OG, Hart, McBride) are all shooting at least 83%, including 86.4% from Hart which is by far a career high (was only shooting 74.8% before this year).

This beats the current record holders over an entire season, the 2021 Clippers, who shot 83.9% on 1387 FTAs.

84.08% is higher than the career averages of guys like Oscar Robertson, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, John Stockton, and Shaquille O’Neal.

Hopefully it keeps up for the entire season. Even as a fan, never expected this level of offensive efficiency from them.

LOL at them trying to sneak Shaq in there.

[DJAceNBA] Karl-Anthony Towns has reduced his turnover percentage from 14.1% last season to 10.6% this season. According to @The_BBall_Index, he also leads the NBA in largest decrease in turnovers per 75 possessions compared to last season among players with at least 600 minutes played.

The Hawks are frisky, having beaten Cleveland and Boston already.

    And the Knicks.

Have they actually played together in any games yet?

    Yes, against the Knicks.

Oh geo, flushing me out, are you? Anonymity is such a blessing…

Well, since Bo knows… (anyone still remember those ads…?) And since half the posters have admitted their profession: Not a zookeeper. My gig is saving wildlife in the wild. 24 protected area notches on my belt so far (22 IUCN Category VI community managed PAs, 2 national parks). Although all of them were somewhat accidental results from working with locals over the years to help them save their stuff.

So never shoveled a stall. Worked for zoos, but out of their wildlife conservation departments, and largely (but not entirely) overseas.

As for my favorite, I love all my children equally. Tigers to mice, and I’ve worked on both. My favorite is the completed jigsaw puzzle, not any one piece. And so I try to keep it all together.

    It’s a job.

ps — ‘Raven’ was chosen not because it’s a cool bird, which it is, but because it was my son’s nature camp nickname and stealing it from him made him furious. Which was pleasing.

It’s not an accident that all the top plus minus guys are on teams with the best records in the NBA. Having good teammates helps your plus minus.

IMO, on/off is much better, but even that has a lot of noise in it because on/off is dependent on strength of team, lineup issues, whether you are a starter/bench player, whether either the starting unit or bench unit are especially good/bad, whether the other players at your position are expecially good or bad and so on. The thing is, if you look at it over multiple years it starts to make a lot more sense and imo tends to capture signals about the player’s defense and other attributes that are not in the boxscore. I’d say it’s a good starting point that then requires some subjective analysis.

Mikal Bridges this season in home games is averaging 20.4 PPG on 64 TS% with a +20.6 net rating. On the road he is averaging 13.3 PPG on 48 TS% with a -1.1 net rating.

That’s an enormous difference. I heard him say in a post game interview that he loves playing in MSG, but there has to be some randomness in that data.

I did not realize that the Knicks were on the cover of this week’s New Yorker. Nice.

Geo, I appreciate your disappointment that you’ve never shoveled rhino poop, but as bucket list items go, I feel it’s an attainable dream….
