Former #2 pick and former Knick Derrick Williams is a free agent?? There’s your backup power forward right there…

We should totally sign him to a 1+1 deal where the second year is a player option!

Can’t risk it. It may not be enough. Leon should give DW the Ron Baker treatment. A no trade clause with a 15% kicker must be added.

And Luka just got tossed. For all his genius with the basketball, he is not someone who is great at keeping his emotions in check.

And Luka just got tossed. For all his genius with the basketball, he is not someone who is great at keeping his emotions in check.

There’s a reason I’ve been downplaying his obvious talent/skills for the last couple of years. I watch a LOT of Dallas basketball. There’s more to winning at the highest level than the boxscore.

Somehow Germany overcame a 9 point on 26 shots performance by Dennis Schroder…they were -20 in his 30 minutes as he went 4-26 overall, including 2-9 in the last 6 minutes.

And Luka just got tossed. For all his genius with the basketball, he is not someone who is great at keeping his emotions in check.

Guessing Brooks had something to do with him getting pissed off, seems like the upside to having him on your team

But Dort & Brooks might be the best tandem to throw at Luka in the whole tournament. Pretty close between that duo and Mikal/Cam Johnson

Watched the first couple episodes of Ahsoka with a friend last night. It was good!

The show reminds me of the original Star Wars movies than any other show they have running. Something about the pacing, dedication to the 70s sci-fi aesthetic, and so on.

Having forgotten a lot of the Rebels story I was a bit lost, my friend reminded me of it a bit, but I didnt think it took away a lot. It just adds a bit of mystery.

    Brooks & Dort
    My personal injury lawyer?

I was thinking they were a country music duo gone dirty.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, though: time proved Mills right about that Hardaway contract. Not only did he play up to it, but he earned the exact same money four years later.

I have to comment on this one.

Dallas has practically been trying to trade Hardaway ever since the ink dried on the contract they gave him. He’s a streaky offensive player that can wins games, but overall he’s a negative player.

Getting rid of him was the right idea. Bringing him back at the salary Mills gave him was a huge error. It cost us a pick (or protection on the ones we got) in the Porzingis deal because no one wanted him and Mills wanted to create space for Durant (lol). And Dallas still can’t rid of him.

I certainly don’t want to start a re-litigation thread about the KP trade, but there were so many aspects and assets involved, I think attributing a specific “value” to THJ’s inclusion is suspect. I could easily argue the opposite–that his inclusion gained us a pick or lesser protection–but I won’t because I cannot back it up.

RJ’s stat line looks similar to so many of his games as a Knick – 24 points on 22 shots, 1-6 from 3.

I wanna believe in the kid, but I think he is what he is – an OK scorer who doesn’t do much else to fill up the box score. I guess his best hope for improvement would be to up his 3 point %, but I don’t see that happening based on 4 years of data.

once i realized how poorly RJ was playing on defense, I was out…

some good offensive moments won’t make up for that…

plus, he seems so duplicative of julius…julius is a much better player though…

i believe everyone has the opportunity to improve…there have been games where he’s helped the team be successful – but way too often he’s the worst player in our rotation for the game…

the good thing about continously discussing RJ, it does help to clarify my reasoning for wanting him out of our rotation…

Edit: goodness gracious, had to really go through my post to make sure no errors – doogie might be lurking…

    doogie doogie doogie…

Tim Hardaway Jr turned out to be slightly overpaid. I don’t understand why Mills wanted him, but that one did not turn out to be a blunder.

Mills record in asset and player acquisition is surprisingly good. And don’t forget that if Dolan didn’t intervene we would have stolen Kyle Lowry from Toronto right before his career took off.

He hired David Fizdale, though, and he drafted Kevin Knox. Those were his blunders and they were big enough to sink him.

I don’t pine for Steve Mills & Scott Perry but hindsight has been kind to them. Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, and RJ Barrett are Mills & Perry guys. The draft picks we used to select Immanuel Quickley and Quentin Grimes were acquired by them, too. We still have another Dallas pick in the arsenal.

They weren’t great but they should not be on the list of bad executives.

Fizdale and Knox were pretty amazingly horrific (and unforced) errors, I must say.

Fiz vies for worst coach in my book. Might not get #1 just because his damage was quite limited, but it made me sweaty just watching him cluelessly fumble around on the sidelines. Like watching a bad comic bomb. I was shocked he got another job, albeit down in the ranks. Perhaps it was just a textbook case of the Peter Principle.

Drafting Kevin “3-on-3” Knox is just such a massive screw up to me that it’s hard to overlook. He’s barely an NBA player, if he’s one at all, and we all knew it. And it wasn’t that he just missed, it was that he missed and that these were the next 5 guys:

    – Mikal Bridges
    – SGA
    – Miles Bridges (He’s good to great as far as on court stuff goes)
    – Jerome Robinson
    – Michael Porter, Jr

Minus Jerome, that’s a crapload of talent taken immediately after Knox.

I mostly attribute this to Perry though, Mills was fired because he didn’t want to trade Morris on an expiring deal for the IQ pick, that’s just plain dumb and mirrors some of the stupid moves he made prior to hiring Perry.

No one is suggesting you should overlook their blunders. I am suggesting that we overlook a lot of good moves because of those blunders.

I want to go on record as saying Mills was the worst basketball executive in the history of the universe. I say universe just in case they play basketball on some planet outside our solar system and they are the ones sending those nifty UAPs to collect data on earthlings and scout our teams.

Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, and RJ Barrett are Mills & Perry guys. The draft picks we used to select Immanuel Quickley and Quentin Grimes were acquired by them, too. We still have another Dallas pick in the arsenal.

^ he left a nice bag of goodies for Leon. Can’t think of any other execs who did the same.

Hubert retconning Perry/Mills into good executives is one of the more perplexing positions I’ve seen here

I mean, it was just hit after hit – and not a one of us could have predicted any of those things going wrong. Not a one…

Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, and RJ Barrett are Mills & Perry guys. The draft picks we used to select Immanuel Quickley and Quentin Grimes were acquired by them, too. We still have another Dallas pick in the arsenal.

I’ll just keep posting it til you or Strat can make a coherent argument.

I’m sorry for being amusing, Hubert, but that list is a pretty goddam good argument.

Also, RJ Barrett sucks, and we’d be better off if we had traded down and taken Garland and Clarke, as Jowles and I and others advocated.

And hey, we got a couple low draft picks that the current regime, which you denigrate, turned into players that far exceed the expected outcome of those slots.

It’s not close. $15mil for one season of Portis offsets Julius. Knox offsets frankly everything else, but at least Mitch.

Fizdale offsets … Hell, it was a terrible regime that got lucky with one dart and by trawling for every available forward pulled in another good player along the way.

Strat ignoring shit like Luka taking a pretty mid Dallas team to the WCF because he doesn’t like his vibes is one of the best long running bits on Knickerblogger

Mills was pretty awful, but I will always believe that he came a torn achilles away from landing Durant and Irving. Fizdale wanted Knox, but other than that all he did was tank in a year they were supposed to tank. I don’t blame him for that. Perry was a mixed bag to me. I give him credit for bringing in Mitch, and got things going in the right direction, but he struck out on too many reclamation projects. Fournier and Reddish probably cost him his job.

The problem with Mills (and Isiah, and Jackson, and Layden) is that a monkey sitting at a desk eating a banana during all the decision-making meetings would have had a better success rate just by virtue of doing nothing. If the franchise had just been put on No Trade/Autodraft mode for those 20 years, the team would have been so much better.

So you’re saying we’re not currently benefiting from Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, Quentin Grimes and the Dallas pick because we overpaid for Bobby Portis and drafted Kevin Knox. That makes sense.

The problem with Mills (and Isiah, and Jackson, and Layden) is that a monkey sitting at a desk eating a banana during all the decision-making meetings would have had a better success rate just by virtue of doing nothing. If the team had just been out on No Trade/Autodraft mode for those 20 years, the team would have been so much better.

The exits of Melo and Porzingis were not easy to manage. I’m pretty sure a monkey would have ended up giving Kristaps the supermax he was looking for and we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Now that I have thought about it for a moment, minus some goofy draft day reshuffling acts, Leon Rose has effectively been the monkey sitting at a desk eating a banana with the franchise safely in No Trade/Autodraft mode. And look at the results: he’s not in the worst POBO in franchise history discussion at all!

Leon is number 1 with a bullet, and he’s made his share of blunders.

    I’d probably go:

    Good:

    1. Leon

    Decent:

    2. Grunwald

    Mixed bags:

    3. Mills/Perry
    4. Walsh

    Hideous abominations:

    5. Phil
    6. Layden
    7. Isiah

Yeah, Grunwald did a great job except for the Lin & Bargnani fiascos but even those didn’t seem like they were his choice

THJ averaged 17-3-3 with a ~56% TS for the four years Mills signed him to, and he was very durable during that time.

It wasn’t a good contract and Mills wasn’t a good GM, but it wouldn’t have been one of Phil Jackson’s 5-10 worst moves. It was just kind of blandly mediocre.

The thing about the THJ signing is that Mills totaly bidded against himself. No team would have offered him even close to that amount. It left me feeling that the guy had very little grasp of either the salary cap or player valuation.

It’s also hard to know how much say Mills had during the Jacksonian Era. Or during the Isiah era. He certainly wasn’t a firewall, to say the least.

At the end of the day, it’s just glorious to not have the shitty-ass FO’s reputation stinking up even the better years. Leon just keeps his mouth shut and keeps incrementally improving the team and getting results on the court. That could change, but for now, it’s a welcome change from the decades of clown show that preceded him

The three top men’s seeds made it to the US open semifinals along with unseeded Ben Shelton. That’s pretty good company for Shelton

The thing about the THJ signing is that Mills totaly bidded against himself. No team would have offered him even close to that amount.

I think he was a restricted free agent, so Mills had to outbid whatever Atlanta valued him at. Restricted free agency always results in an overpay.

Donnie, we all know that’s true, but in this case, the offer was obscenely above anything that the Hawks would have matched. Here’s an article to refresh your recollection:

The Knicks appear to have severely outbid the competition for Hardaway. According to ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz, the Hawks’ intended offer was, well, much lower.

    —Kevin Arnovitz (@kevinarnovitz) July 7, 2017

Likewise, ESPN’s Zach Lowe, who called the contract “ludicrous,” reported the Hawks were planning to offer a much lower deal.

“The Hawks were willing to offer Hardaway a four-year deal in the $48 million range, league sources said,” Lowe wrote. “The Knicks blew that out of the water with a four-year, $71 million monstrosity .”
