2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Wizards

The Wizards have been playing very well the last few months, as they really look like one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. So this is a very fortuitous matchup for the Knicks right now.

Let’s hope that they just take the L.

Let’s? Go Knicks!

  1. Plumlee is the 4th undrafted rookie to start a game this season. How great is that?

  2. we have been talking about building a “system and culture” for 3 years now. just saying

Actually the Knicks brass has been saying this. This board has mostly just wanted a new roster. But either way, since we actually have gotten an almost new roster every year under Jackson, it’s hard to see how a good system and culture could have actually happened. The team is starting to show signs of cohesion on both offense and defense in the last few games. I want to keep that around, so I am not in favor of wholesale roster changes this off season. Keep guys around who contribute to team ball if they are readonably priced. This means keeping Lee and tryin to re-sign Holiday to something reasonable. I have this weird goal compared to the rest of you in that I want Knick’s basketball that’s fun to watch first, and a shot at a title second. For that, we need team players, players who try hard and some sort of offensive system not dependant on isolations. I think that’s not so much to ask.

Agreed, the whole “building a system and culture” thing was always a bullshit platitude offered up by Jackson, while he actually tried to keep doing dumb quick fixes with the roster every year, while luckily being so bad at team-building that the team is going to end up with two top ten picks in three years. “Let’s improve the system and team culture…ooooh, and also let me trade some of our only assets for Derrick freakin’ Rose.”

It’s funny, looking back at the Rose trade, Jerian Grant was so Jordan Hill in the Jeffries trade, where the Rockets basically said, “Give us all your tradeable assets” and the Knicks had so few tradeable assets that the Rockets ended up taking Jordan Hill back despite clearly not even wanting him. Same thing with the Rose trade, the Knicks had so little to trade that the Bulls ended up with a guy they didn’t even want because he was one of the only tradeable assets the Knicks had. It was like, “Ugh, fine, I guess we’ll take Grant.”

  4. Baker already has 10 points. If he keeps this up the stats will catch up with the eye test.

  5. @2 – Agree, it’s hard to argue that turning over 75-80% of the roster EVERY year is the way to build a good team. Basketball is very much a team game and there is a huge advantage for teams that have been together for several seasons. See for example teams other the Knicks.

  6. But if you don’t turn the roster over each year, you can’t say, “Yeah, we’re not good now, but when we turn the roster over again, we will be good, so you can’t judge what I’ve done yet, because I’m still turning the roster over!”

  7. Plumlee is the 4th undrafted rookie to start a game this season. How great is that?

we have seven undrafted players on our roster (six that started the season on the team) – is that really a good thing ???

  8. Well, geo, when you’ve had so few high draft picks to work with what is the alternative???

  9. Can Horny tell our guys to miss more free throws already? We’re getting much too close.

  10. Ok how much weight are we putting into this recent cohesion on offense and defense?

  11. I’d be okay with some turnover, because there are guys on this team I never want to see in a Knicks uniform again. Keep Baker, Plumlee, Billy, KP, Randle, Ndour and 2 of Lee, OQuinn, Holliday and Kuz plus the probably unmovable Noah and baby you got continuity stew going

  12. @12 Why not keep all of them? We’d still have 4 roster spots available.

  13. Well, geo, when you’ve had so few high draft picks to work with what is the alternative???

i’ll be honest reub – if/when shit really hits the fan in life for me – i wanna talk to you…i have two people in my life that are stubbornly optimistic…both are aging much better than most other folks i know; and. definitely better than me – my older sister now looks like my younger sister :-(

there is definitely a method to your madness sir…

  14. Wtf is melo complaining about. The whole world knew he was so doing a step back 3 there. He proceeds to try to shoot and cones down withere ball and complains he gets called for travelling?. Please jeebus let him be gone after 3 more games. I’d take rivers and a 2096 #1.

  15. I was going to respond to KnickfaninNJ by pointing out the total hollowness of the Jackson regime’s dedication to building a “culture” but BC both beat me to it and put it better than I could.

  16. We can have a winning culture if we get rid of the selfish players. It means no more Rose and no more Melo. It means drafting guys who play a team-oriented brand of basketball on both ends of the court. That means looking at guys like Ball (who is a way better help defender than he gets credit for), Ntilikina, or Isaac.

  17. Thanks, geo. Your insight, charm and uncommon good sense in friends will propel you to centenarian status I do believe.

  18. Looking at Ball? I mean if we get a top 3 pick and he’s available it shouldn’t be a question. I sure hope we “look” at him.

And for one to speak about culture PHIL is the one who acquired Rose and gave Melo the ntc.

  19. Looking at Ball? I mean if we get a top 3 pick and he’s available it shouldn’t be a question. I sure hope we “look” at him.

I agree, but I have no problem telling his dad to shut the fuck up if he wants his kid to get any playing time. Honestly, if I were Phil Jackson, I’d tell him to go ahead and run his brand and also shut the fuck up.

    Why am I watching this?

Because you really, really want the L. Orlando is up 7 with 90 seconds left. This is a huge L. We need this.

  20. Jerian Grant alert:

15 points on 10 shots, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals in 31 minutes.

  21. Lonzo’s dad truly is a moron, no argument there. Will probably cost his son and family money.
They have already hired a agent who has zero experience. And their whole idea of the Big Baller brand clothing or whatever garbage is a joke and ugly as hell.

  22. Lonzo’s dad is just preparing Lonzo for his long career playing for the Knicks. It’s all good.

  23. Orlando held on for the W. We are down 12 in the 4th. Could be huge night for the tank.

  24. Lose this basketball game for the love of fucking god

  25. Come on now. How hard is it to miss a few foul shots? Who would know?

  26. Hero ball to the rescue! A great call off the timeout by Horny to clinch the loss.

  27. So we’re currently in the #6 spot, 2 games behind Orland and Philly, who are currently tied for 4/5. Here are the remaining 3 games for each team:

    Knicks: Memphis, Toronto, Philadelphia.
    Philly: Bucks, Pacers, Knicks
    Orlando: Pacers, Bulls, Pistons

I can’t see Orlando winning 2 of the next 3 but I can see us losing to Philly in the last game if we both go full tank. This means that if we want a shot at the 5 spot Philly will need to win against one of Milwaukee or Indiana as well as against us, while we need to lose every game here on out. Here’s to hoping.

  28. OKC beating Memphis was big because it took away any reason for Memphis to win that game. They probably will still beat the Knicks, but it would be better if they had a reason to win.

  29. Begley is reporting that the Knicks will be very careful with KP for the remaining games. I think he’s done for the year.

  30. I’m only nervous about picking behind Philly and Orlando because both need point guards who can shoot. I can see a situation where Orlando selects Jayson Tatum and Philly grabs Monk, but I’m not counting on it. I’m hoping for a situation where Dennis Smith Jr, De’Aaron Fox, and Frank Ntilikina are all on the board. I trust Clarence Gaines to make the right decision.

Get our point guard, be bad again next year (but more fun to watch without Melo and Rose), and then draft Hamidou Diallo.

  31. Hamidou Diallo I think you mean Luka Doncic :)

If they want a shot at a top pick, they have to first make sure that Jackson makes a bunch of moves to try to make them a playoff competitor next season. ;)

  32. “I trust Clarence Gaines to make the right decision.”

Ummm. Clarence Gaines doesn’t make the decisions.

  33. Why is Melo even playing?
Can’t we do tank mode alla Phoenix?
I’m also thinking who’s the better pg baker or ulis?
The prob with Knicks is they gave the second half minutes to sha sha while in phonix they let their guard play no matter what

  34. Why is Melo even playing?
Can’t we do tank mode alla Phoenix?

I really don’t know. It’s the same thing in Sacramento. They’re also trying to win for no reason. Thank goodness for Sacramento’s stupidity. It will be tough for Sacramento and/or Minnesota to catch the Knicks in the remaining games left, since they both lead the Knicks by two games with just three to play. Presuming the Knicks beat Philly, they’d still need to beat either Memphis or Toronto, and neither seem likely, while Minny and Sacramento would have to go 0-3, which also seems unlikely.

  35. It will be tough for Sacramento and/or Minnesota to catch the Knicks in the remaining games left, since they both lead the Knicks by two games

They’re leading by just 1 game. Memphis will rest everybody tomorrow, and Toronto isn’t likely to care if they’re 3rd seed of 4th. The dumb Knicks can easily win 2 in a raw and fall to 8th.

Oh, my bad, I saw that they each had two more losses than the Knicks, but I didn’t realize that they each have four games left, while the Knicks have three. But that still doesn’t make them just a game ahead of the Knicks. It’s a game and a half, but yes, just one in the all-important win column (when you start talking tanking, then wins are more important than losses).

Sacramento would be extremely hard pressed, though, to lose to both the Lakers and the Suns, so I still think that the Kings are mostly out of it. The Wolves have a real shot at going 1-3, though, which would mean that the Knicks would fall to a tie with them if the Knicks go 2-1, which is possible if Memphis really does rest their guys.

Toronto, though, very much does not want to be #4, as #4 gets the Cavs in the second round.

I think in the past this wasn’t always motivation enough for teams on the last 2-3 games. Let’s hope they start Baker, Randle, Ndour, Kuz and Plumlee tonight and give them all heavy minutes.
