2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Bulls

The Knicks host the Butler/Mirotic-less Bulls tonight in a game that is a key game for the future of this squad. They’ve been losing some hard-luck games recently, which suggests that they’re probably a little better than this current streak shows, and, of course, being “a little better” is the worst thing for this team overall, so a win tonight could be very bad for them.

I’m attending the game. I presume they’ll win because they’re better off losing, so at least I’ll get to see the stupid Bulls lose. They’re so dumb. They’re like the mirror image Knicks, except they have a legit superstar on their team in Jimmy Butler (already – while KP is on his way).

EDITED TO ADD: Oh boy, I get no Butler AND no Porzingis. Awesome.

Let’s go, Knicks!

  1. line went from Knicks -3.5 before KP announced out, briefly dipped to -2.5 and now back to -3.5. Haters.

  2. Something tells me the Knicks are gonna pick 12th after all of the 5 PGs, Monk, Tatum, Isaac, Giles, and Anunoby are gone.

I really hate Josh Jackson as a prospect.

  3. So, according to the Ian Begley column, some of the veteran Knicks are upset with the team’s defensive schemes. The same article suggests the team was not thrilled when Fisher was fired and Rambis hired.

Rambis. The last vestige of the Triangle.
Still hanging around, still sucking. Phil’s little crony.

    Lame.

  4. Knicks are the ungrateful mistress we hate during the day but can’t resist at night.

    Why are we here? lol

i’m especially disappointed with the play we keep running where rose and courtney lee both run into screens and immediately freeze in place, as if tasered, and melo plants his feet like a cactus and goes for the don quixote tinder swipe block. damn Xs and Os.

  6. Charles Barkley just cracked me up: “there is no reason to watch this game” on national tv!

    Lol

  7. Who’s responsible for playing Porzingis extended minutes while Noah is babied at less that 20 minutes per game?

  8. it should go without saying, but given that it’s his achilles again we should be sitting porzingis until he can do swan lake on the pavement

  9. The Knicks could be in the Warriors position and Barkley would probably still find something to rag on the Knicks about ha ha

  10. here comes another god awful game without Butler and Zingis… it’s been hardly watchable so far

  11. howdy ptmilo…

i gots to know – what exactly does it mean if someone is or isn’t a “lever-pusher”?

ever since you wrote that i’ve been trying to piece that comment out…it’s now driving me crazy…i hate it when shit goes over and around my head…it does happen fairly frequently though…

  12. i gots to know – what exactly does it mean if someone is or isn’t a “lever-pusher”?

meaning devious or manipulative. trust me you don’t want to dive into the cavernous etymology. people never recover when they realize that skinner wasn’t the one training the rats.

  13. Yesterday the SS Ntilikina navigated succesfully around the Sixers Iceberg… now comes the biggest challenge so far, navigating around the non-Butler Bulls.

  14. man, Wade is so done as a top player… and the only PG lazier than Rose on D might be Rondo.

  15. Scoring only 22 points in the first quarter against the Knick defense is pathetic.

    They’re out-tanking us!

  16. it’s a nice touch that they’ve asked brandon jennings to do some in game t-shirt cannon passes for the crowd

  17. right on ptmilo…well, this thread has been a success for me and i can now rest easily with that mystery resolved…

nice, so you wuz just basically saying rose ain’t the sharpest tool in the chest (lacking the capacity to really be deceptive at all)…i like it, i’m gonna steal that one at some point ;-)

is writing a part of your work (i do a bunch of correspondence, but it’s all real basic with an emphasis on simple, plain, boring syntax for clarity = not a whole lot of fun); or, are you just a serious book nerd?

  18. Alright, they’re up by 8. Slump is over — back in cham’n’ship form.

  19. nice try geo. i won’t allow myself to be unmasked until i can at least parlay ‘the phil files’ into an adult comic book. or a podcast. please, just a podcast.

  20. don’t look now but the justin holiday revenge game is about to become the jerian grant revenge game

  21. Is Lance Thomas signed for more than 10 days? If so, Jackson should be fired.

  22. Who the hell is Paul Zipser?

And Jerian Grant – solid bet for a career game?

    I can’t wait for halftime

  23. I remember vaguely hearing about Zipser last year because he was excellent in a camp for young euros going to the draft… but frankly I didn’t even remember that he was with the Bulls.

  24. Michael Carter-Williams would be a great guard to have in our tank effort.

I’m actually upset that Tony Wroten got cut. He would have been the perfect guard right now.

  25. At least Melo can still put Paul Zipser in his place. Although anyone who says he doesn’t get a good whistle should have seen that last call

  26. a zipser sounds like some kind of gimmicky footwear fad that becomes inexplicably popular for 10 months. like heely’s or lit-up la gears.

  27. how can anyone argue that the trade with the Bulls was not obviously in their favor after watching the 2nd quarter of this game…

  28. how can anyone argue that the trade with the Bulls was not obviously in their favor after watching the 2nd quarter of this game…

not if the knicks get something good with the rose money and the second round pick and Holiday keep working out.

  29. if I couldn’t despise Rose enough, he comes out shooting efficiently to try to sink the tanking ship.

  30. I am so sure this team will end with the 13th pick.

sometimes I wish I was more optimistic.

  31. The revisionist tank narrative that emerges when Phil’s win-now moves fail is among my favorite KBer tropes.

  32. The revisionist tank narrative that emerges when Phil’s win-now moves fail is among my favorite KBer tropes.

In general, I agree, but I don’t think anyone is doing that anymore. Everyone knows that this season was not a stealth tank. In the past, yes, people made that claim, but not anymore.

  33. can Hoiberg fucking take Carter-Williams out of the team already?

    he’s severely hurting our chances.

  34. this is so horrible.

aside from having to watch Michael Carter-Williams and Derrick Rose go at each other, the Knicks are also going to win a game that should be a loss because of blind injury luck.

even rooting for the Knicks to lose is frustrating.

  35. This is a home game against a team that isn’t very good to begin with and is missing its .200+ WS48 player. Don’t worry, we still suck.

  36. When anyone defers to the expertise of paid talent-evaluation professionals in the NBA, remember that Michael Carter-Williams has played for three different NBA teams, and for a total of 6472 minutes.

  37. MCW has a ts% of .425.

    point four twenty five!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and he still averages 21 minutes a game.

  38. Time for the emotional flip after this heroic apparent victory over a terrible team. Looks like we’ll only be a half game out of the 9th seed after this game… Noah played well. Melo showed fire and desire. Holiday is as knockdown a shooter as they come. I think we could contend with the Raptors for that conference finals slot. Pretty surprising for a team that just came off losing 9 of 10, but that’s ancient history after a victory like this.

  39. lance does not have a double digit gamescore this season. is he the only player in the league you can say that about with at least 500 minutes?

  40. I don’t know if Lance is the only one, but he’s probably the only one who received a four year contract

  41. @dred, yeah MCW is just dreadful. The have no spacing whatsoever, so the Knicks’ defensive strategy of not running out to guard three pointers doesn’t matter. They should have played more Portis, and they just need to get rid of Rondo already. God, I think I would be just as embittered about the Bulls’ front office if I rooted for them as I am about the Knicks’.

  42. Pointless fucking win. There can’t be a more pointless fucking franchise than the Knicks. Trying to win games when they should be losing them with players who shouldn’t even be playing for them by the end of the season. Yawn.

  43. A win is a win is a win is a win…and I don’t wanna come off as a stick in the mud- but it’s easy for Melo to say “we gave a complete effort for 48 minutes” when the team you just beat is without their top 10 player. I’m not sure if that’s a thing a leader would say to keep the troops rolling, but this was a game that we not only had to win- but should have won. Last night was inexcusable, but I’m not sure that we shouldn’t be reminded that it was inexcusable. It’s like we have a team of nice guys. Even Allan Houston showed fire more consistently than this bunch. Nice is fine, but I’d like to see the team take the court with a bloodthirsty (figuratively of course) mindset more often. Am I nitpicking?

In any case, #25, Melo, No-er (Clyde voice), Kuz, and KOQ were outstanding. I wish we could bottle that effort and take a swig every time the guys get a little complacent. Sucks about KP, though. The staff needs to step up and shut him down until his Achilles recovers- this is getting scary.

  44. Thomas is also averaging 43.8% from 3, and is one of our best perimeter defenders. Possibly our best on ball defender. He doesn’t take a lot of 3’s, but still. It’s not a horrible contract for what he provides. Lance Thomas is very very far from being the problem with this team.

  45. Don’t give up on Lance. He’s been playing through plantar fascitis all season. He’s a candidate to improve.

  46. Thomas is also averaging 43.8% from 3, and is one of our best perimeter defenders. Possibly our best on ball defender. He doesn’t take a lot of 3’s, but still. It’s not a horrible contract for what he provides. Lance Thomas is very very far from being the problem with this team.

“Lance Thomas is one of their best perimeter defenders and possibly their best on ball defender.” “How to have an awful defense, Alex?”
