2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks @ Sixers

The Knicks and their starting point guard, Derrick Rose, travel to Philadelphia for a very important game for the future of the team. The Sixers are not particularly good and the Chicago Bulls are playing without Jimmy Butler on Thursday, so the Knicks very well could win both of these games and be right back in the playoff hunt, which is good if you want them to get the #8 seed and not so good if you want the future of the team to not be not so, you know, bad.

Let’s go, Knicks!

  1. I expect a 30-point win from the Knicks, because that’s what the Knicks do.

    then a loss to Chicago.

  2. The season comes down to the next two games. Either the Tank express rolls on or the Knicks will end up figuring things out (for a while at least)

  3. we’re favored by 2 over philly going in to tonight…i’m not so sure about that…

man…this season has sure boiled down fast to damned if you lose, damned if you win…damn…

i guess, i’m hoping they get it together and win tonight???

  4. I’m watching this game aboard the SS Ntilikina, everyone’s invited.

    let’s go tank!

  5. So Rose wants $150 over 5. Isn’t $30,000 below the minimum NBA salary?

    … What?

    Million, not Thousand?

    He wants $150 MILLION?!?!?

    LOL ROFL!!!!

  6. That’s pretty much exactly what I figured he’d be looking for. It’s actually roughly $25 million under his max salary, which I guess is his “concession.”

  7. Rose ought to have starred in La La Land….

But he may make a fine tank commander tonight….

  8. he likes to share…he’s kind of got that greg oden thing going on where he’s 20 something looking like 40 something…

his usage is 36%…not sure exactly what that means – but, i have a feeling once the ball gets in his hands – he’s not thinking much about passing…

  9. Embiid might be a net minus right now (in a vacuum, not on the Sixers), but I can’t help but think he’s gonna be reeeeeeally fucking good

  10. We need to dig deep down in ourselves and find a way to lose this game

  11. @20

    hmm… maybe? hahaha

anything would be more enjoyable than watching Philadelphia play basketball.

  12. The Sixes aren’t going to score 30 in the first quarter – they must really suck. Don’t they know who they’re playing?

  13. I remember the good ol’ times when Sergio Rodriguez was swishing and dishing at the MSG.

    yeah, no.

  14. he played like 20 something games in D’Antoni’s first year, with that god-awful team that had Al Buckets, Chris Duhon, Lee, Gallo, Chandler and Jeffries.

it was the year the Knicks picked up McGrady, yes, to free up space for LeBron (and ending up with Amare)

then he went right back to Spain right after that.

  15. Seems like Derrick Rose is rejuvenated by mental breakdowns. Maybe he could quit on the team and disappear every other game

  16. Philadelphia is definitely the place to go to heal from your mental breakdowns, boys.

  17. with that god-awful team that had Al Buckets

the mouthguard gives me nightmares still

  18. Dario Saric ended up being one of the guys drafted with the picks that were sent out in the Melo trade.

    He stinks.

  19. I kinda miss Buckets, he was a terrible basketball player but I was a poor naive Knicks fan, and the only game I ever watched at MSG was a Knicks – Celtics game where he scored 30 points, I remember having a grand ol’ time there.

  20. It’s fair to say that the Sixers’ inability to score has little to do with the Knicks’ D. Open 3s, easy layups – a real team would be killing us.

  21. Porzingis is horrible when he has a mismatch. Half the time he winds up taking long fade away 2, which of course is worse than the shots he normally takes.

  22. with that god-awful team that had Al Buckets

he came and played for Sydney in the Australian league last season. He was pretty subpar and lasted about 12 games before being released. Or as we like to say when US imports don’t live up to expectation “agreed to mutually part ways”.

  23. This game shows how terrible the Sixers have been at finding value at lower rates / low picks.

outside from Embiid and Noel, the entire roster is pretty much made of D-Leaguers and washed up euros… there’s not a single player outside of the top picks that looks even remotely like a good prospect.

Richaun Holmes is probably the least terrible, but he’s getting no minutes because Ilyasova and Saric are inexplicably ahead of him in the rotation.

  24. I want to see all of our centers have 3 fouls each by the half.
    KP 2
    Willy 2
    KP 2
    Noah 3

  25. Saric is still a rookie, Simmons is on the way, and the Sixers are (smartly) going to add two lottery talents to this summer. They’re building a team with some semblance of forward thinking, can we relax with the hate?

  26. Rose has absolute tunnel vision in the paint. So many opportunities for a dish for a dunk but he throws up a floater. Luckily tonight they are going in.

  27. @47

    oh, no doubt about it.

they are an awful basketball team but they do have a bright future… if Simmons is the real deal, they could go forward with a Fultz or Ball / Simmons / Embiid core that will be reeeeeally scary in a couple of years.

and for all their awfulness, they are kinda keeping up with the Knicks after all.

  28. After tonight, the Knicks can package Rose and OQ for whatever they want! Rubio AND a 1st round pick!
    :-)

  29. KP picks up the third foul because he had to cover for a Knicks guard who got beat. Where have I heard that before…

  30. Looks like Hornacek has not shaved. Could this be one of those “I won’t shave until we trade Derrick Rose” kind of deals??

  31. Ilyasova is an elf who’s somehow infiltrated the NBA to defeat the evil lord Adam Silver, who is actually a vampire

  32. If Jackson’s plan is to play Rose 35 MPG and let him have a few solid volume scoring games before trading him at his highest value, he might be smarter than I’d thought. But he is not smarter than I’d thought.

  33. @56

man, we really need imgur support on this board, this will be the season of Knicks memes.

  34. this is probably the sloppiest, most awful game of basketball I watched in a very long time.

  35. Wow Melo literally didn’t cross half court because he was complaining

  36. @63

I was about to just write that Silky… I mean, as much as I hate Rose, Carmelo always comes back and snatches the title of most irritating player.

0 effort, 0 teamplay, 0 defense, just an overrated chucker doing what he does best.

  37. to be any worse, this game would have to end with a Rose 17-footer to win the game at the buzzer.

  38. We need Rose back in to guide our tanker through these choppy waters

  39. Yeah, this is some crappy basketball

Embiid’s tools are droolworthy. I wonder if he ever puts it together.

Great rebound by Noah to keep that possession alive for Rose to line drive that jumper in. He has very little arc on his jumper. Still, you gotta hand it to him, quite the deadcat bounce here.

  40. It is absolutely astonishing that they let the Sixers get back into this game. Goodness me, they are so bad.

  41. T.J. McConnell just kept the S.S. Ntilikina afloat

seriously though, look at Melo after that shot falls… how does he not ask for a trade by the end of the month

  42. Porzingis did tickle the twine there.

And to lose to a guy who looks like the owner’s son. Seriously, I can’t believe TJ McConnell is actually an NBA player.

  43. I had written off getting a lottery pick a month ago. Now we’re looking at a high lottery pick.

  44. @108

well, he’s only an NBA player because the Sixers are a NBA team lol.

burn this thing down, let’s get the Ball Cruiser on the water!

  45. wow, just got home in time to catch the end…why o why did I have to pick up nba league pass…

burn baby burn…burn this motherfucker down, cuz – what we got going on now sure ain’t working out so well…

can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store for us…

  46. This is so freaking weird! lol

We can’t say they are not entertaining, even if only in a *very* perverse sort of way!

    Wow!

  47. Ship still sinking fellas!

I wish KP was playing better but THE SHIP IS STILL SINKING

  48. I’m watching the PHI feed and they keep showing video of their nerd owner having a happiness meltdown and failing to accurately high five his rich white pals after the game

  49. @121 i saw him stretching his Achilles while on the bench. Not good at all. They may shut him down for the season and trade everyone

  50. For the record, I literally laughed in an audible fashion when that shot dropped through

I let go of a crazed laugh and a “they lost” and clapping and my girlfriend thought I’d lost my god damn mind. Then I told her about the SS Ntilikina and what a beautiful ship she is.

  51. I’m with Silky, forget Ntikilina, I’m about that SS Ball after yet another shipwreck

  52. Must say I never lost the faith – got my forbidden reward with less than a second left on the clock!

Btw, it was Rose that tipped the rebound into Philly’s hands….lol..he is a one-man tank machine!

  53. Tanking and selling at the trade deadline is great but do we really trust Phil and Mills to do it properly??

  54. Yeah if this Achilles is still bothering KP (it is) you nail his ass to the bench. Securing KP’s long term health ought to come before literally any other goal that the Knicks organization has.

  55. @121 i saw him stretching his Achilles while on the bench. Not good at all. They may shut him down for the season and trade everyone

    Shut it down..

  56. My only fear is that sitting KP makes Willy Hernangomez and Kyle O’Quinn play more and they’ve been more productive with their minutes than KP.

  57. You guys think the Achilles is still hurting KP or is it that he’s been relegated to a position of 3 point shooter in this offense?

  58. If the Blazers and Magic somehow win tonight we move to the 11th worst record!

    Keep losing guys!

  59. @135

Because they have played less minutes. Give them more minutes and you’ll see the difference.

  60. My only fear is that sitting KP makes Willy Hernangomez and Kyle O’Quinn play more and they’ve been more productive with their minutes than KP.

I’m OK with that, the Knicks’ ceiling is a lot lower without KP on the floor. They are not beating any good teams without him.

  61. KP needing to be shut down is the worst information of all. It will be the second season straight we’ve done this and leads us to question what his long-term development/durability will be. I’d rather that he were just in funk or being shut out on offense at this pace.

  62. You have to think Jackson’s job was on the line with this season. He hasn’t made any serious investments in the Knicks’ future. Even getting Hernangomez cost him two future 2nds. If you don’t make a play for the future, and after 3+ seasons, the team has yet to surpass the win total the team put up the year before you arrived, that’s pretty freakin’ bad.

And if Jackson is gonna be let go, and the team is gonna make wholesale moves at the deadline, you have to think that they will let Jackson go before the deadline so the new GM can have maximum flexibility.

  63. KP needing to be shut down is the worst information of all. It will be the second season straight we’ve done this and leads us to question what his long-term development/durability will be. I’d rather that he were just in funk or being shut out on offense at this pace.

Why did they shut him down last season again? I checked out after the all star break.

  64. Dolan has a hard-on for Ujiri after he fleeced him twice over

Please please please poach Ujiri in the offseason, Jim.

  65. We were up 10 with 2:20 to play,

KP air balls a wide open 3.

Perennial All Star TJ McConnell hits a turn around J at the buzzer.

You can’t make this stuff up.

  66. You don’t have to shut Kristaps down for the whole season if his hammy is barking, but give him a couple weeks on the shelf for sure.

  67. I legit felt bad after the game because I screamed in happiness when Philly’s shot went in.

then I remembered Rose, Melo, Dolan, Phil… and I’m fine.

  68. It’s gotta be Houston, Zeke, or Ujiri that’s our next GM. I think Mills is tainted by association and will be relegated to interim status.

Please for the love of all that is holy let it be Ujiri.

  69. This is so awesome right now. I have so grown to hate the people involved with this franchise that I am welcoming their day of reckoning more than I despise our losing. Melo, Rose, Dolan and Phil are all going to be on that hotseat and they won’t have anymore excuses to fall back upon.

  70. I just finished on DVR. Add me to the spontaneous lol crew. The Knicks had a great final possession, but KP airballed it. The Sixers possession looked hideous but … Knicks. Melo not lifting his hands above his waist didn’t help. But as Er noted “top five pck” is still possible.

  71. Didn’t Ujiri sign a multiyear deal with the Raptors last season? Why would he want to come to this shithole?

  72. Didn’t Ujiri sign a multiyear deal with the Raptors last season? Why would he want to come to this shithole?

Fuck, you’re right. So, can anyone tell me what Alan Houston thinks about the Bargnani trade, or if he has any pending sexual harassment lawsuits?

  73. I still want Phil to stick around for one more draft. I like Clarence Gaines’ eye for talent. He can help set us up for the future with a high pick in this upcoming draft.

  74. I left for lunch and we were up 10 with two minutes to go. Classic Knicks.

Gotta say I was happy to give the team the benefit of the doubt through the first half of the season, but I am pretty happy to clean house. Usually I throw in the towel by the All-Star break, but this is a PB.

We didn’t even make it to #ThirtyGames. What a time to be alive.

  76. We didn’t even make it to #ThirtyGames. What a time to be alive.

It’s been a special year for sure. Big question is whether there will be a sequel to “We”ll Always have Linsanity”?

In all honesty though, would not be surprised if the team goes on a big tear and still makes the playoffs. Only because Knicks and who doesn’t want to be a 1st round patsy for Cleveland?

  77. Tanking and putting Melo, Rose, and Noah on the market are so obviously the correct thing to do, if they don’t do it, you have question their basketball sense. You go to Melo and explain that he has no chance whatsoever to contend in NY while he’s still got anything left given the state of the team and that it will take several more years to turn it around. If he’s too thick to understand that (which is possible) then make him miserable until he asks out. I’m not sure if we can even move Rose or Noah, but we could buy Rose out to accelerate the tank. If we get a good lottery pick, have KP, maybe pick up a young player or pick via a trade, then you go from there.

  78. It’d be nice to trade Rose, but we probably can’t and it doesn’t really matter since he’s off the books anyhow. I imagine we’re stuck with Noah. Its imperative to deal Courtney Lee while we still might be able to. He’s not making huge money, but he’s completely useless on a team going nowhere fast
