    1. Per Herring, Sasha is back practicing with the starters while Afflalo is out. Sigh. My least favorite of all the possibilities we discussed yesterday, even if Galloway and Grant both wind up playing more minutes than Sasha. Our defense opening games will be really not good.

Oh, and Afflalo is listed as day-to-day with the hamstring strain.

    2. I expect, maybe not in the beginning, for the best lineup to either be Lopez/KP/Melo/Grant/Galloway or O’Quinn/KP/Melo/Grant/Galloway. I know Afflalo and Calderon are vets and are paid pretty well, but can you imagine a lineup of Lopez/KP/Melo/Grant/Galloway with a 2nd team of O’Quinn/Williams/Afflalo/Vuj or Early/Calderon? It’ll never happen because Calderon is playing really well, but I imagine those are the lineups Fish is gonna try to use most often. In the triangle, that’s good balance. What Melo needs is a perimeter defender, and the 2nd unit needs a steady hand and calming influence running the show.

    3. As much as I like the second unit and I get Fisher’s thinking with starting Sasha while Affalo is injured. I’d really love to see a Grant, Affalo (when he’s healthy), Williams, Melo, Lopez starting 5 with Calderon, Gallo, Early, Zinger and Oquinn as the second unit.

Throw in Sasha and Seraphin when needed.

    4. Very sad. Well liked guy.

Agree about cancer. The word itself may be the most terrifying of all.

    5. I really like Flip Saunders..this is disheartening. I mean..he just found out 2 long ago. Cancer is a bully..biggest bully in the nation. A cure’s got to come up.

    6. This surprised me. I just read an article about him yesterday. Clearly he was a very sick man and they were saying he wouldn’t be back this year, but the tone did not make it seem like death was imminent.

    7. Back to the Knicks, Berman says: “Westchester expecting to have Thanasis, Trice, Saunders and Atkins to start season.”

That would make a pretty good D League squad. I like it

    9. One of my best friends has leukemia. Whenever I hear about someone (anyone) losing the battle, it ties my stomach in knots. Knock on wood, my friend has responded amazingly to the chemo. This news brings us down to earth. Sports takes our minds off of the awful truth about our short, misery filled lives for just a bit.
