If Sasaki’s 9th inning today turns into a recurring thing, this is gonna be a short post-season for everybody else

It’s hard to tell because the Reds stink and are about as bad a postseason team as we’ve ever seen, but it has felt like the Dodgers have been playing possum all year. They remind me of the ’99 Yanks, who “only” won 98 games but then had as dominant a postseason as we’ve ever seen.

Ohtani starting game 1 in Philly is definitely going to be something to watch.

It’s hard to tell because Sasaki has thrown only 600 major league pitches in his life, and completed his 4 month rehab assignment just last week and had never pitched in relief before. But last night his 9th inning was: 11 pitches, 9 strikes, 4 outs (the catcher dropped a popup that would have ended the game). His 101 fastball and trap door splitter were drool inducing to Dodgers fans. It’s no secret that the Dodgers’ Achilles heel has been their accursed bullpen. If Sasaki is for real, Yanks/Red Sox today is just a consolation game.

Since I am in China, the Knicks game starts at midnight and the Yankees game starts at 8am tomorrow morning. That makes it hard to watch both and get sleep too. I’m choosing Knicks as my priority even though it is preseason for the Knicks versus win or go home post season for the Yanks.

Note that it is holiday here so neither game conflicts with work.

I have a multi-hour meeting right through the game, so I won’t be chatting about it online, sadly. I’m tempted to have it on in the background on the big screen anyway, but wondering if it will be reflected in my glasses…

I very much look forward to reading commentary afterward, and hopefully watching a replay. LFGK!

its national day golden week over there mao tsetung proclaimed china into being 76 years ago yesterday

Don’t you have to like, be in the lead first for your closer to matter

Mitchell Robinson is starting at center in the preseason opener, Mike Brown says. OG Anunoby is out with a sprained hand.Pacome Dadiet is starting in his place— Stefan Bondy (@SbondyNBA) October 2, 2025

    Thanks, I hate it.

(hopefully an overly cautious Dadiet showcase opportunity)

Pacome with the start is interesting. Either they really believe in him or they’re hyping his trade value.

Pacome with the start is interesting. Either they really believe in him or they’re hyping his trade value.

At least we get to see him with the starters.

Either they really believe in him or they’re hyping his trade value.

Or they want to get more data on whether they’re willing to move on from him just so they can keep both Brogdon and Shamet. Edwards did say that the team was impressed with all the work he did over the summer, which has made it harder for them to trade him. If he plays well during OG’s absence, maybe they decide to either forego both vets or accept dumping Kolek for nothing in return (or by paying a protected second).

All I know is that if Tanner Scott didn’t exist the Dodgers would have had the best record in baseball this year.

Even in SL, Dadiet looked much better than he did year 1. He was attacking the basket more often and generally looked more comfortable/fluid.

The biggest key for him right now is just hitting 3s. It gives him immediate value to a contending team that’s short on big forwards, which makes him difficult to trade.

Are Bondy and others suggesting that no team would take Kolek to free up a roster spot? Only Dadiet?

The implication has been that nobody would be willing to give us anything for Kolek. We might even have to pay a small amount (either cash or a second) to get someone to take him into whatever space or exception they have. And since this FO has generally been reluctant to just give guys away(*), they might decide they’d rather get something for a guy who likely wouldn’t play real minutes this year than get nothing (or pay something) for another guy who likely wouldn’t play real minutes this year. I think that’s a bad calculus, because even if we’re all-in this year, guys are getting older, and Dadiet could be helpful before the window gets narrower a couple of years from now. But we’ll see.

Thanks for the explanation. Yeah, it’s hard to imagine that a 2024 first-rounder is already a definitive bust. Interesting that the Knicks and no one else would value Kolek and a 2nd rounder more than Dadiet.. and this is all to keep Shamet and Brogdon. I think Shamet is the only one of the four whose production you can easily predict and it’s possible none of them will produce very much.

Love the Autumns when Knicks and NY baseball teams collide. My ultimate outcome for today in order (1) Yankees win (2) Knicks remain healthy after the game (3) Yankees remain healthy after the game, assuming they won (4) Dadiet has a great game, or at least good enough to halt the trade talk (5) Brogdon does not look washed. Possibly others but in last place is the Knicks winning.

    I think that’s a bad calculus

It’s alarming how bad the calculus is.

    A) There’s not that many minutes available behind Brunson, Bridges, Deuce, and Clarkson to begin with. If you add Brogdon, Kolek becomes the 6th guard, which is a complete waste of a roster spot.

    B) We have a bevy of near worthless 2nds, including the least favorable of ORL/DET/MIL this year & the 2nd & 3rd most favorable of IND/MIA/OKC/HOU next year.

Even if Dadiet turns out to be the next Maciej Lampe, it’s worth keeping him around.

If we like Brogdon so much (I’ll admit, I’m intrigued), trading Kolek and a 2nd is a fair price for him.

And lastly, it’s just fun to have two raw young French prospects at the end of the roster.

Mitch looking healthy is something we do like to see. Don’t know about anything else.

    1

nice to see the guys out there competing jalen changed his braids up too

mitch with 5 rebounds in first 6 minutes

Either they really believe in him or they’re hyping his trade value.

Or they want to get more data on whether they’re willing to move on from him just so they can keep both Brogdon and Shamet. What? Why aren’t they trying to win this game? Shouldn’t the starters be in for 38+ minutes?

Trying players out to see how they perform, I don’t even understand this sport anymore.

    1

Utterly shocked to find out Jordan Clarkson is not shy about getting them up.

Deuce sir, you have my attention.

Trading Deuce would be fucking stupid.

There is no player on his contract that is worth is value for a trade, it’s going to suck when he gets his bag somewhere else.

China recognizes Yom Kippur as a national holiday?

10/1 is China’s Fourth of July.

Folks… they aren’t moving Dadiet to make room for a 15 man on the roster. If he’s part of a substantial trade, so be it.

Yabu’s transition frequency last year was middling, but he was legitimately one of the best players in the league in terms of efficiency on those shots (96th percentile). Would be cool to get him out there as much as we can to see if that’s a real thing we can weaponize.

I won’t call it a “post move,” but that was something other than an open dunk from Mitch!

eric gordon still alive and kicking wow mikal with 2 free throws is that more times than he went to the line all last season anyway he missed both not great 13 rebounds in 16 minutes for mitch and 4 assists for jalen both very nice

The Knicks shot 21% on threes which was much better than the 76ers 5% (1 for 20)

but dont know if i love mitch playing 18 minutes in the first half of an exhibition game hopefully hell sit a lot of the second half want to see huk diawara brogdon mathews

Both teams three point shooting looks like they are jet lagged (except Deuce)

i can see reasons to start deuce and other reasons to start mitch they both gave the knicks a boost at the beginning of the game maybe mike brown will use different starters situationally which could be both good or bad depending on how often he changes it up id rather he use substitution patterns situationally but keep the same starters for the most part

Trading Deuce to roster Shamet is prima facie terrible idea because unlike Dadiet & Kolek, he’s good at basketball today.

huk 6 points and 6 rebounds in 6 minutes mathews looks good as i expected better than shamet 1 rebound 2 steals 1 block 2 assists for broggy

dadier looked like he was trying to be aggressive as a starter in his 14 minutes with mixed results mostly bad (1-for-6) but one had to like the effort he was putting forth

    https://x.com/NBA_NewYork/status/1973811539854668285

This sprinting to the left corner is what I was talking about last week. No reason for KAT to stop at the left break and force the ball carrier into a tough contested finish.

Assuming KAT will contest ~5 threes a game playing PF & 3 result in long misses there is at least 1 open corner shot he will earn every game, if he runs all 5X.

    My two observations:

    – how lucky are we to have Clyde still doing commentary? He can make even meaningless pre-season games immensely entertaining

    – if Matt Ryan and Alex Len are ever allowed to run a pick-and-roll again, the Knicks should be stripped of their franchise

    Cliffs notes on game:

1… Much improved global ball movement.
2… Much more individual intensity defensively.

dadier looked like he was trying to be aggressive as a starter in his 14 minutes with mixed results mostly bad (1-for-6) but one had to like the effort he was putting forth

    If Dadiet can shoot 35% from 3, then it’s 9pts on 6 shots & 3 FTs. That’s a pretty solid line.

In a game overseas where Philly shot 8.6% from 3, I think it’s okay to brush over him going 0-5 from deep. Jet lag is a real thing.

Watched the first quarter so far. Not impressed with Clarkson’s decision-making, especially in terms of forced shots.

Any clue what happened to Josh?

Boxscore stat replays are up on NBA.com of people want to check those out.

Looking at Dadiet’s shots, the thing you love to see is how he moves into space when the defender swivels his head. It creates a wide open 3 with little effort. Of course, he has to actually make those at some point.

Now wrapping up quarter 2, Deuce and Mikal look really good, Yabu is enormously stumpy, Mitch doing consistently good Mitch things, and Maxey is just really damn good. And cheerful.

i dont remember mikal looking particularly good at any point and especially not really good hopefully yabu has a better showing soon anyone else impressed with mathews other than me

mitch looks like: if the other team does not have an answer for his size and activity around the basket – they are going to get crushed on the boards…mitch looks like one of the most dominant physical players in the league around the basket…

man, for those of you whom have already traveled along the estate planning process/journey, big kudos for manning/womanning up and getting that shit done…

i’ve literally consciously procrastinated on this for years, avoided doing most of “the work” the last few weeks…i don’t know, maybe about 14 hours or so of actual research/drafting so far this week…

sort of grim shit, but whatever…

“crafting” my obituary now, hmmm, maybe i’ll shout out to KB 😛

on a very very positive note – breaking again from therapy…using that mindset that it’s important to take what you’ve learned

honestly though – i mostly just hate talking about this shit with another person, not even crazy about contemplating it while “meditating”, when it’ll surface and somewhat be resolved…what sealed the deal on that was digging in to childhood a bit today…

Third quarter in, bunch of no-names; Matthews can shoot from deep like light’s out, Huk up and down but more up (beautiful floater, nice running dunk, tons of rebounds, a bunch of bad fouls), Brogdon’s a definite maybe, Shamet is not making a name for himself. Good defense and hustle all around.

    1

Fourth quarter wrapping up, even more no-names; McCullar and Diawara completely unimpressive, so was Ryan and Kolek (sigh) although he came on a bit at the end with some nice driving scores (I guess he can only do things in the last four minutes of any game), Len is an absolute utter stiff. I refuse to acknowledge Jemison in any way. Things got ugly and sluggish, but true for both teams.

Overall Dadiet moved well but only shot 1-6 (0-5 from three). Mitch had 16 rebounds in 18 minutes and was clearly just a lot larger than anyone else. Co-MVP of the game with Mitch was clearly Deuce.

And Doogie, in the 2nd Mikal made a few shots, stole the ball at least once, dove into the stands to save a possession, and was all over the place in a good way. Sorry you missed all that.

    On to the next one.

i missed that from mikal too glad he had some good moments just wish hed hit his free throws for good measure

mikal had a couple of finishes where he moved beneath the basket and finished on the opposite side…

    didn’t know OG had a hand issue…

well, time to strap in for some early post-season high stakes major league baseball featuring many’s fave team the new york yankees…

here’s hoping giancarlo can hit the ball somewhere other than directly to the shortstop each at bat…

oh shit – the game not for another couple of hours…
