Football notes… I’m doing a 180 on Schoen & Daboll.
I still think it’s bad for a young QB to go through early regime changes. And I still think the chances of Mara getting the next hire right are low. But they fucking suck.
This article here was my final straw…
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6633198/2025/09/16/ny-giants-defense-shane-bowen-cowboys/?source=user_shared_article
It’s not just the part about Bowen.
Schoen gave real money to this Hudson guy. He was a disaster from day 1 in training camp. And the whole time Daboll was praising him for his “edge”. Sunday’s meltdown seems entirely predictable after reading it.
The roster sucks. No line, can’t stop the run. It looks like Schoen might have hit on two late picks: Skattebo and Mbow. But it’s too late.
I was more pro Daboll than Schoen but not after Sunday. I’m pulling hard for 2-15 and a clean house. There’s a ton of QBs at the top of this draft, and we might not need one, so it’s a great opportunity to land a major haul of draft picks.
So now that the training camp roster seems to be set, here’s my early hot take on the decisions for the non-guaranteed players:
Brogdon: solid, savvy PG with size and 2-way talent, but older with a checkered injury history and vaguely rumored locker room issues. I really like the signing. Unlike the Kemba Walker move, he is non-guaranteed, cost nothing to acquire, and is not being depended on for any critical rotation minutes. This is what you want from a vet’s minimum guy, and the fact that he’s non-guaranteed (essentially a team option to waive him cost-free) means that he actually has to earn that spot. This is a Mike Brown-friendly move and I think that if he comes to camp healthy and in shape he will stick as an emergency depth piece who plays around 500-800 regular season minutes.
Shamet: Sigh. I guess the fact that you don’t have to worry about him whining about strings of DNP-CDs and that he has demonstrated that he can get hot from 3 and give you 100% on D despite his physical limitations makes him ideal for a deep bench roster spot, as opposed to, say, Evan Fournier. I just think it will suck if we need to clear Kolek or Dadiet or (god forbid) Huk, to roster both him and Brogdon.
Alex Len, Garrison Matthers, Matt Ryan: Not even worth talking about.
I just can’t get outraged about the Kawhi Leonard stuff.
After having watched Darnold and Brown go on to be top ten quarterbacks elsewhere, I don’t need any more proof quarterbacks don’t actually matter.
Diawara: This is the kind of sleeper pick that I’ve been hoping for…a 20yo with intriguing size and skill who can bounce back and forth between G-League and NBA with a non-zero chance of giving us something here and there when our wings get nicked up.
Evbuomwan: Perfect 2-way guy. I really like his film, especially his ability to use his length/athleticism to finish with either hand. If the shot comes around, he might be a keeper in the case of a roster-depleting trade for you know who.
Jemison: Nice size and athleticism, probably better than the typical “veteran” defensive 2-way big, who tend to be plodding stiffs. I’d probably prefer Pate on this spot, but I guess an emergency big is a good way to go.
I suppose you can justify Ryan, Len, and Matthews as guys to run balls-out against the rooks, sophs, and 2-way guys. You probably wouldn’t want to risk one of the rotation players getting injured by an eager young player doing something stupid.
What is the assumption that Brogdon is cooked based on? That no one has been interested, so teams must know he’s not as good? Age? How poorly he shot (28% from three in 28 games) for Washington? To be sure, part of me is trying to rationalize that he might still be good but I would be curious in someone’s actual formulation.
Also, do you guys know Jesse Welles? Very Dylan-esque but writes protest songs about what’s happening right now.

He’s been injured a lot the last few seasons and he’s 32. It could be a blip and he’s past it and in a limited role, he’ll be great. Or he could be in decline. Who knows. But it’s a good, low cost high reward move for us.
I’m glad Shamet is back. And if Kolek is traded because Brogdon looks good to go, so be it.
We’re all in this season. Anything we can do to make our team even incrementally better we need to do.
Who is Brown?
My Daniel Jones prediction is off to a great start. If he turns out to be the next Sam Darnold like I think he will then that should be the nail in the Schoen/Daboll coffin.
Sometimes it’s not the QB. Sometimes it’s a rational fear of getting pummeled every time you drop back bc your line is absolute garbage.
Thanks! Although I’d say last 2 seasons, not 3. If we get a less streaky Cam Payne, I think that could be helpful.
Speaking of Cam, as far as I can tell he is sitting at home waiting for some team to invite him to training camp.
Vylan-esque.
I do think Shamet earned another shot, but I do have to say, Garrison “Garry Bird” Matthews has some outrageous deep ball highlights… like threes from the logo, off crazy motion, and buzzer beaters. No idea if he can do anything else, though.
The Raiders had a Pro Bowl tackle staring them in the face with the #6 pick, and they drafted a running back instead. Now they have that running back trying to run behind a truly hapless offensive line, and he often gets tackled right about the same time he receives the handoff. They have Geno Smith, generally a competent quarterback, running around for dear life randomly chucking the ball into clumps of football players hoping that the guy wearing the same jersey as him manages to catch the ball out of sheer chance.
They spent a huge amount of draft capital on skill position players who have no chance to succeed because their offensive line is made up of guys who constantly rack up 45 PFF grades. They have the oldest coach in NFL history trying to do a “win now” strategy with a team that has clear bottom 10 personnel. In short, it’s a typical season.
This is the biggest black mark against the GM. He addressed the O line, but did it in an awful way which set the franchise back. He spent first, second and third round picks on Neal, JMS and Ezudu and from that, he gets a 30th ranked center in the NFL. Then he has to waste FA money to sign a LG and RT to make up for his draft busts.
His entire 2023 draft was useless with trading up to get first round bust CB Banks and Hyatt who can’t even get on the field for a single play against a defense the is handing out chunk plays like candy.
Then, Daboll uses Jones (who is getting the crap beaten out of him every other drop back) like a wishbone QB running him every third run to increase his pummeling and gets his neck injured seriously twice. The poor bastard had PTSD by the time he left the Giants.
Brogdon was basically injured his whole career and one can argue that body miles are very low going into his 10th season at age 32 so he could be just entering his basketball prime.
He never got into rhythm after his thumb surgery playing with kids in Washington and it clearly effected his shooting.
However, he shot 44% and 41% from 3 on ~5 attempts per game two season before this one and was 6MOY just 28 months ago.
I somewhat get any atheticism concerns (eventhough that has never been strength) but did he really forget how to shoot too? – He shot over 40% from 3 in his rookie year at 21 yrs old. Career 87% from FT. The man can shoot.
Not Brown, Jones of course. Hadn’t had coffee yet.
Just build a good offensive line. It’s not easy but few teams win without one.
I wasn’t really aware of what his specific injuries were.
If it’s things like thumb, shoulder, etc…that bodes far better than if he’s had knee injuries the last few years.
hubert im guessing that owen meant daniel jones when he inexplicably called him “brown” you have now already given your take on danny dimes
“basically injured his whole career” is perhaps not what you want when the whole point of the 10/11/12th man is someone you know will be there when one of your main guys is inevitably out. If Brunson is out — which he will be from time to time — and Brogdon is out, and Kolek has been salary-dumped(*), then our only point guards are Clarkson and Deuce, neither of whom is really a point guard.
(*) I’m getting at least a little nervous by how much certain media people seem convinced that Dadiet is the one who will get dumped, just because that gives us slightly more roster flexibility for the whole season. I know this is Our Year to Go For It and all that, but I’d really like to hang onto the 20 year old big wing who can potentially shoot and defend, you know?
Other than his sub-30% 3pt shooting last season, Brogdon’s numbers look pretty good. I could see him stealing the backup PG spot.
All I’m saying is that history tends to repeat itself. Won’t be the first time Brogdon was overlooked and had to prove the entire NBA wrong. He’s the only 2nd round pick I know that won The Rookie of the Year Award. Hope he balls out and does it again.
I just looked at his injury history and it is quite extensive! But I wasn’t able to really discern how much time he’s missed with each injury. But damn he’s had a lot of them in pretty much every part of the body an athlete can get injured in!
Maybe our new medical staff can keep him healthy!
It’s also worth reiterating that Brown’s offense in Sacramento relied heavily on shooting, especially Huerter off movement.
I think this makes a strong argument for Deuce getting a lot of minutes.
Any shooter who can hit shots coming off a screen could see their value increase under Brown.
Shamet & Matthews both seem like good bets. IDK, about Brogdon off motion but he’s a hell of a shooter.
Of course, this leads to questions about Hart’s role. On the other hand, Fox couldn’t shoot in Brown’s first year either. Plus, we could use someone to push the pace, also like Fox. Clarkson was probably acquired to play the Fox role for the 2nd unit.
OG is more of a standstill shooter (or at least I get worried when he tries anything much more complicated), but that’s not the end of the world, and his cutting should be devastating. He & Mikal cutting early in the year was a large part of our offense looking like a juggernaut.
Mikal looks capable of movement shooting, he’s able to stop and go up with seemingly good form. The ball just needs to go through the hoop a lot more for him this year.
I was pro Daboll heading into the season but I’m ambivalent now at best. I’m not buying his QB guru status any more after watching Jones bounce back in Indianapolis. And the team is an undisciplined mess.
I’d rather they go 2-15 and let Mara continue wearing his scarlet letter of shame.
It’s a QB heavy draft next year, and if we like Dart that means we can likely get franchise-changing amount of picks to move down 2 spots and grab the best non QB available.
EB, I really hope that the delta between players having to adjust to Brown’s style of play vs him to the players is at least 1:8. Meaning, if we change more than 12% then he may not have been the right fit.
I think the offensive change is going to be drastic, but that it says more about Thibs running an older style offense than it does about Brown.
Thibs’s offense suited the team 2 years ago, but I don’t think he adjusted well to having Mikal & KAT. The offense felt too Brunson centric and he made poor use of their shooting ability whereas letting Randle barrel his way to the basket fit his philosophy well.
On the Knicks’ offense stuff from today… every time the offense has flourished (‘23, January ‘24, the first half of last year) we had a strong secondary ball handler (first Randle, then Hart for half of last year before he faded away).
I could have sworn that’s what we brought Bridges here to be. I’d love to see us come out of the get letting him handle the ball as much as Brunson for a month and see what happens.
I post Raiders stuff here because I see lots of parallels between the Raiders and Giants, two poorly run franchises. I just KNOW that the Raiders are going to stink up the joint all year then go 3-1 in their last four games and tank their draft position. May your Giants avoid the same fate. The Jets are bad in their own unique kind of way, but the Raiders and Giants are kind of doppelgängers for each other.
I grew up in a rabid pro-Jets household, but everybody also pulled for the Giants in the big games, so I have a bit of a vestigial Jets/Giants tail remaining.
With the Giants, I feel like the bikers in the bar in “A Bronx Tale” after Chazz Palminteri tells them, “Now youse can’t leave.” But repeat the scene and the beat-down for 13 straight years (or 56 years for the Jets fans).
I think it is a little rough to call the Giants a poorly run franchise who were perennially contenders in the 50’s and early 60’s with SB wins in 86, 90, 07, 11 and a SB loss in 00. How many are we entitled to win? They have been poorly managed for the last 8 years after being superlative run by the same ownership group for the previous 4 decades.
John Mara comes off as a putz, but comparing them to the Raiders is a bit of a stretch.
Jazzfunk, just watched that clip, pretty good beat down.
I took my dad to Dodgers Stadium last night. Ohtani gave up 0 hits and hit a home run, and the Dodgers found a way to totally waste all of it. The guy wearing the Charlie Kirk hat gave up 3 runs in the 9th, wasn’t sure whether to boo or cheer that one. Turns out bandwagoneering is harder than it looks. I thought I had it all figured out.
Raven, when Sonny’s crew emerges from the back room – it’s pretty good. Intellectually, Giants fans should be able to appreciate the winning seasons, Superbowls, ‘56 Championship, the hall of famers – and we do. The Giants have also wasted whole decades. Their ineptitude and move to the swamps of NJ drove thousands of fans to follow other teams – like the Cowboys, Packers, Niners, Dolphins, Steelers and Raiders. My dad gave up on them in 1974 and never looked back.
2016 was a good bounce back season, but the g-men started going south in 2012..
cool to see pau gasol on nba today…today…
Basically, the Giants were good from the period when the NFL forced Wellington Mara to hire George Young and stop interfering with the football product until John Mara decided to take an active role in running the team, sometime around the second Eli Super Bowl win. (Wyich was much flukier than the first one, IMO.) The Mara family are really bad at running a football team. And I fear no good will come back to the franchise until they’re all pushed out. Which the current NFL leadership will never do. So unless Tisch improbably decides he’s finally going to start throwing his weight around as half owner, we’re stuck.
It’s funny you mention that bc if you look at the Giants schedule, they have a murderers row for 13 weeks, a bye in week 14, and then finish with the four easiest games on the schedule (WAS, MIN, @LV, DAL).
My hope is that they’re 1-12 (or worse) heading into the bye and the disgust is so overwhelming Mara has to fire everyone, and then they just play out the string with scrubs.
But this is Mara we’re talking about. He’ll probably spend the bye week tying everyone’s job security to the final 4 games.
Giants @ Raiders week 17 will be a dandy.
not such a die hard large event activity person…did get a chance to see barry bonds play…his legacy hasn’t exactly shined – but was amazing to watch play…
Shohei is definitely a player to remember watching perform at a high level…
heard they had done a bunch of renovations the last few years at Chavez Ravine…isn’t it all corporate now?
Alan, you are 100% right. The Maras are awful owners who manage to carry off a whiff of historical competence, because outsiders see the trophies. No George Young, no forced Eli trade and we are the Jets.
The Giants have certainly been good more recently than the Raiders, but the current iteration… I mean it looks pretty Raiders-y
He’ll impress
As a Jet fan….comparing the Giants to the Raiders is apples and oranges…I would say the Raiders and the Jets are more comparable…the Giants have played in 4 super bowls in the last 25 yrs …their 2 wins were over the hated Bellicheat and Brady twice (once ruining a perfect season..like the Rangers cup in 94…that alone should last a lifetime)…
The Giants under Accorsi (appointed by the aforementioned George Young) & Coughlin (hired by Accorsi) were great. Since they’ve been gone it’s been as bad as any team out there. And as Alan pointed out, that’s exactly how it was under the Mara family before the NFL stepped in.
Basically Mara needs Roger Goodell to hire the next GM or we’re fucked.
I guess you have to give the Maras credit for letting Young and Accorsi cook. The NBA once tried to step in and help Dolan and he ended up pushing Donnie Walsh out.
Crazy part is the Giants won a playoff game as recently as January 2023.
Saquon should probably make the hall of fame just for that. It’s arguably more impressive than rushing for over 2,000 yards and carrying the Eagles to a SB.
yeah he should
