Could be a 2023 record for most daily minutes with no comments. So I volunteer to halt the rot.

Availability is difficult to include when assessing a player’s value outside of the extremes. Is Luka given a boost versus Joel because he will play more back to backs? With this in mind, who will be the most valuable next season: Zion, Ja, or RJ?

Availability is huge when evaluating good players. When the player is at or near replacement level it’s not at all important because you can swap them out for the next guy up without losing much of anything.

EPM has an estimated wins added stat. In 23 games Zion added 5.3 wins and in 73 games RJ added 2.3 wins. RJ is just that bad by the metrics.

I’d love to spend two minutes in RJ’s head. Do we think he’s shielded from all the criticism regarding his atrocious metrics? Does he spend all his time in clubs reveling in the adulation of ignorant fandom, or is he well aware that he sucks?

That’s a bit harsh — that he’s mid, as Little Raven might say.

I don’t know how the term exclusively used for “shitty-but-smokable weed” became Gen Z’s catch-all for “of poor quality”

In more important news, the seminal Replacements album Tim has been re-released, and it’s not just a cash-grab of a “remaster” job. The entire thing has been remixed, stripped of the weirdly-monaural and cheaply-80s gated-reverb aesthetic, and holy shit does it sound GOOD.

    Really, really fucking good.

This. When your player is basically treading 25-57 water, having him for 3,000 minutes doesn’t mean a damn thing.

seems most of us are out on RJ…there are still some holding out hope…maybe even one or two who truly believe he can become a plus player at some point in his career…

i wonder though how the knick front office and coaching staff REALLY feel about him…

maybe bringing on hart and DDV are their answer…

although, those acquisitions could have also been done in case of quik’s departure…

very hard though for me to imagine quik playing in another uni…

if we kept mitch, we gotta keep quik too, right?

I think Rose and Thibs know where RJ’s game is now but are willing to be patient with his development. As long as he’s inching forward they’ll be OK with him, but they’d certainly include him in a major trade if one came up.

Word is Donovan Mitchell isn’t going to sign an extension with the Cavs. I have a feeling that’s who we are going to wind up with because he clearly wants to be in NY. I didn’t like the Brunson/Mitchell backcourt defensively the first time and I still don’t like it. That goes double with Randle’s inconsistent but mostly bad defense. But if that’s what happens next off season, at least it will probably be cheaper than last time and we’ll be less gutted because of the other moves we made.

RJ being in that deal makes the most sense.

Jowles, yeah, I always felt that something was off with Tim. Great songs, but a muddy mix, etc. From what I’ve heard of the remixed “Left of the Dial,” it sounds much better.

Even so, I listened the crap out of Tim and Pleased to Meet Me back then…

I don’t know how the term exclusively used for “shitty-but-smokable weed” became Gen Z’s catch-all for “of poor quality”

I’m out of the loop, what’s the term?

    “mid”

And yeah, I loved and still love Tim for all its production flaws. This new mix sounds like a goddamn rock band, though.

I’d love to spend two minutes in RJ’s head. Do we think he’s shielded from all the criticism regarding his atrocious metrics? Does he spend all his time in clubs reveling in the adulation of ignorant fandom, or is he well aware that he sucks?

It’s definitely “I’m Keith Hernandez” up in there.

It appears that the poorly illustrated graphic novel describing my mis-spent youth is entitled, “Mid.”

    Who knew.

A better question is what do you think RJ’s “I’m Keith Hernandez” thoughts are?

Keith had “I won the MVP in ’79, I can do whatever I want to.”

RJ’s be like… “I was named to the MaxPreps Freshman All American team at Monteverde Baptist Academy, yeah I should take this pull up 20 footer with 18 seconds left on the shot clock”… or “I scored 25 points in the Geico National Boys Championship Game, I can totally drive at those two bigs under the basket”

Confirmation bias is a hell of a drug, though. I encounter so many online Knicks fans (on Macri’s Substack, social media, etc) who remain convinced that RJ is not just going to become an efficient player, but a star, and who take offense at the suggestion of trading him for anything short of an All-NBA talent. All because we drafted him high, he talked about being built for New York, etc.

This kind of reaction is actually further evidence that you can rebuild in New York. The fans irrationally love RJ, Obi, IQ, etc. Build a largely homegrown roster, and they will gladly cheer for multiple bad seasons.

(Which isn’t to say the team should be rebuilding now. Just that in the past they have largely refused to rebuild because of that fallacy about the fanbase.)

Re: “Tim”, the Stasium mix is interesting, but hindsight is definitely 20/20.
This new stuff rocks hard and is a lot more crisp, but when something like “Tim”, which defines an era so much, goes through the ringer like that, it feels a bit like dressing Jack Nicholson head-to-toe in Off White a.k.a. updating a classic with an unrelated but current style.
That said, just being able to hear everything this time around is totally awesome, and it’s loaded with material. Looking forward to seeing the documentary on the new mix.

Listening to the new Tim mixes is an interesting experience. The sense of space it exists in is radically different, and it sounds like certain elements were removed from some of the songs.

Some songs sound clearly better with the new mixes, especially “Bastards Of Young,” which completely rips. “Dose Of Thunder” was never a fave of mine, but the new mix brings it to life. “Left Of The Dial” sounds great as well, much more hard hitting.

“Kiss Me On The Bus” sounds pretty similar to the original and I think I prefer the original mix of “Swingin’ Party.”

OG Swingin Party is pretty amazing, I agree — the new one sounds a little sterile (still enjoy the difference though)

And yes, the soundstage is 100% different. It really sounds like a real band!

For that record, Bob did all of his solos separately, and they were mixed in later, so it’s fun to hear them mix and match some of them into certain songs. I’ve always preferred the Tim version of Can’t Hardly Wait, and the new version is even more amazing. No idea why they didn’t put it on Tim originally.

I’m also realizing the Stasium mix is fairly different from the 2023 mix… the newer ones really are pretty sweet.
