there’s really two(or three) big regression candidates and it’s randle and IQ… hart also with his 3pt shooting but he doesn’t shoot all that much and his whole season is probably going to look similar to the last whole season…
with randle .. he didn’t really show any sustainable improvements … randle to his credit improved by taking some bad midrange shots away and traded them for 3s which was a good change… however the vast majority of his perceived improvement came from 3-10 ft…. he shot a career high .519 and the next closest he shot was .429… it sticks out about as bad as his 3pt shooting a couple seasons ago…. most of those shots are of the drive-fadaway variety… or the fade hooks… or the outright floaters… and for a guy his size shooting those shots the way he does it’s very hard for it to be consistent…
for IQ it’s a similar story.. i think noble pointed out how IQ was bad for most of the year and then he got hot.. and that’s true… but what the hot streak sort of masked was IQ’s deterioration among a lot of other areas… with brunson’s arrival he’s handling the ball less and that impacted him… what saved his year was his floater and midrange shot… and that’s generally where he got hot… some of that may be sustainable but not at the rate at he was shooting last year… and that’s basically what you saw in the playoffs….
with both randle and IQ…. you can absolutely count on those areas to regress… and likely regress hard…. that doesn’t mean they will both tank .. they can improve in other areas and possibly shoot better but they are probably not going to have the year’s they had last year let alone improve… for randle he needs a bit of a transformation to have a more consistent outside shot…. and IQ is going to have to adjust to life playing next to brunson … or probably elsewhere….
part 1 of this interview with chris finch is worth a read:
https://www.minnpost.com/sports/2023/09/wolves-preview-one-on-one-with-coach-chris-finch/
While we need latter part of last season IQ we also need 1st quarter Julius: in the 1st quarter only Luka scored more points and only Nicola grabbed more rebounds and only Luka, Joel, and SGA averaged more points.
Interesting read pt. Not exactly brimming with optimism that KAT and Gobert syncing is going to happen. Both have to adapt, both have to let the game flow dictate their roles, and both have to be better at reading the game flow–a bit more than minor tweaking.
How are we not talking about the fact that Buddy Hield is likely being made available to the best (highest?) bidder? Better, younger version of Fournier, isn’t he?
Then again, Thibs wouldn’t like him for the same reason—no defense. But hell, slot him in for RJ going out in a trade for him and we wouldn’t be losing anything, as RJ doesn’t play any defense, either.
Please tell me I’m not a Knicks/Randle homer. I’ve gotten into a social media spat with a fan who says we’d be better off with John Collins as our starting PF over Randle.
I mean, he’s wrong, right? His whole argument comes down to Collins being a team player and Randle being a cancer/selfish.
His whole argument comes down to Collins being a team player
Forget about assessing Randle, but John Collins, the guy suspended for PEDs, the guy who criticised Trae to get his coach fired, the guy who said his career was stunted in Atlanta…is a team player?
No way I prefer Collins over Ju. I might have said differently a year or two ago, but recent…….ummmmmm…….events have changed my mind on this.
I’m so glad that we’re talking about actual basketball stuff today. And it’s not even paleo basketball.
Better? Yes. Younger? Technically, but they’re less than 2 months apart different
We probably don’t need another 6’4″ wing
John Collins just got salary dumped
Randle was all-NBA
Collins can’t create his own shot, can’t pass, and people don’t think much of his defense
Randle 3.3 EPM
Collins -1.5 EPM
Dude isn’t worth debating
i don’t know swifty, maybe you need to introduce your friend to a player stats page…
never that big a fan of collins…
i wonder how much of the anti-julius sentiment is tied in to his personality/appearance…
definitely an emotional player, hard not to notice his growth last season in handling his emotions on the court though…
work in progress for sure…
I think a lot of it is this. I think there are fans who immediately became entitled the moment we made our first playoffs three years ago and immediately started shitting on randle the next season when we struggled. Then when he flipped off the fans, they never forgave him. Even thought he apologized. I’ve seen people call him lazy and fat, which is insane. You can say what you want about Randle but fat? He’s like the most physically fit player in the league.
I don’t get the hate at all. Dude came here when we sucked and has now helped us get to the playoffs in 2 of the last three seasons and there are fans who literally think he’s hot garbage. They’re idiots.
Are you talking about people on Twitter/Reddit? I don’t remember anyone here saying Randle was fat, or hot garbage. Last offseason it made some sense to doubt that Randle would be able to play at All NBA level again, but now he has answered those doubts and i think the 2021-22 season is looking like the outlier and not the other way around (as i admit i thought, last offseason).
wasn’t too sure about how i would like the Pat McAfee show…just saw an interview with bama’s coach saban…
well done, they got a good crew in studio, and mcafee is no where near as annoying (real high energy type) as i thought he would be…
okay swifty, let’s get weird…
had this one young corporal in the military who was crazy squared away…good soldier, good performance…
average height, she was very fit and had a dark skinned complexion with a naturally stern countenance…
she was having trouble figuring out how to smoothly fit in to the work environment…the general perception was that she was mean and hard to work with at times…
we had an honest discussion of how others can perceive ourselves…
people evaluate off of visual queues…it ain’t always fair, and often inaccurate…
she excelled as time went on…but, yeah there was a lot of folks put off by how she looked…her appearance made them nervous 😓
Randle is pretty swole, plays tons of minutes and plays a physical brand of ball. Dude is definitely not fat or out of shape by any stretch of the imagination. If anything he’s a bit of an overachiever because of his excellent fitness.
I think the chances IQ regresses are close to zero unless he’s dealing with injury issues. He has clearly and obviously added to his game and improved each year. He had some issues early in year 2 making adjustments to the rules changes, but as soon as he did he was a better overall player. Last year he got off to slow start very early, but was spectacular the rest of the way. Everything else was variance and statistical noise. He’ll add something else this year.
We know why Randle was bad 2 years ago. I said it then and correctly predicted the bounce back year once we got Brunson. We had no real PG or 2nd option, he was asked to do too much, and they were double teaming him. Ultimately it go to him mentally also. I think the latter remains the biggest risk with him. He’s not a high basketball IQ player and he’s also a little weak mentally. If things aren’t going well he can spiral down.
Since Randle’s All-NBA selections have come up a couple of times this week, I’m wondering two things:
1)How many of those 15 slots do we expect to be taken up by guards, now that the three teams are position-less?
2)What benchmarks — individual stats and/or team success — would Randle have to hit in order to make All-NBA again?
He was tremendous in both years he was selected, don’t get me wrong. But this past year, at least, he made it in part because there had to be six total forwards. And I imagine he’d have at least been bumped to third team back in 2021, if not left off altogether. But his durability, I think, will always have him at least in consideration, so long as his production is comparable to those two seasons.
…tremendous…don’t get me wrong. But…at least…had to be…I imagine…at least been bumped…if not left off altogether…his durability…I think…at least…so long…comparable to those two seasons.
the love – it’s too much to bear 😛
I was shocked to learn that Buddy Hield is only two months younger than Evan Fournier! Am I the only one who thinks that Fournier has seemed to have been around much longer? When I think Fournier, I think “savvy veteran,” and when I think Hield, I think “young guy just now turning veteran.” Had no idea Hield would also almost be 31 years old.
Alan, it probably also helps that he plays for the Knicks.
If I’m doing the math right, Doogie, Hield was drafted when he was 23 1/2. He was an old rookie. Not that Fournier was young, but he was drafted at 22 1/2.
Maybe a little, Z-man. Though we’ve seen in other sports that there is not a New York bump for season-ending awards. Jeter, for instance, had strong arguments to be MVP at least twice, and lost both times to guys with bigger old-school stats.
second weird thing for the day – what is dating like at almost 60 doogie?
easier/harder/less expensive/more expensive/less drama/more drama/less “romance”/more “romance”…
is i all online stuff these days or are there places to go (no not senior centers…not yet anyways 🙂 )…
Harder/much more expensive/less drama/more “romance.”
@geo I will be 60 in a couple of weeks. Online dating has made things much easier to me. I can easily screen out women who are not a good fit. Spend as much or little as I want. There is an endless pool of candidates. I’ve only run into a few women who put up inaccurate pictures or information. I love it.
Definitely not talking about people here. I know we get into sometimes but get into a debate about a player on some random Knicks fan page on FB and you’ll quickly appreciate just how smart and nuanced our arguments are here even if we do get entrenched in our POVs.
“Though we’ve seen in other sports that there is not a New York bump for season-ending awards. Jeter, for instance, had strong arguments to be MVP at least twice, and lost both times to guys with bigger old-school stats.”
Yeah but I truly think there is something different about the Knicks, especially now. They had been so bad for so long, and yet one good season and the national media, particularly guys like Stephen A. Smith, pump them up way beyond, say, Minny or Utah or other smaller market teams. Clearly, Julius was the face of the 2020-21 team, and he and Brunson were the dynamic duo last year. In 2022-23, he was pretty legit. He was 24th in BPM and a bunch of the guys above him either missed a bunch of games (e.g. Kawhi, AD, KD), played for lottery teams (e.g. Hali, KP, Markaten) or were unlikeable (Kyrie, Harden).
Since we’re talking Randle and I posted something on the previous thread when it appears this one had already appeared, I’ll stick it on here again, if nothing else than to annoy Z-man:
I think one of the reasons Julius is such a lightning rod is because of his style of play, which leads to a wide range of perceptions about him.
He has the perception of being on-again, off-again (Good and Bad Julius), whether within a game, over a stretch of games, or even from season to season.
He’s not terribly graceful. Of the all-NBA power players, people like Giannis and LeBron have a beauty to their power, an inevitability when they go to the hole. I tend to hold my breath when Julius drives.
This extends to his outside shooting, which is often of high difficulty with multiple players draped on him. Again, with Steph and Dame it’s inevitable, while a Julius spin-and-shoot in traffic does not feel that way, despite it often going in.
I think this leads to people underappreciating Julius because of the aesthetics, which really isn’t fair (except perhaps for the first bit).
I’m expecting Julius to be on par with last year, as I am working to release my PTSD from his turnover-laden point-forward time (with Elf) and his meltdown season. I expect to be holding my breath a lot, but I also expect good things to happen.
thanks doogie…that doesn’t sound too bad…
ha g-man…it sounds like you have truly adapted with the times 🙂
Robert Randolph doing the Thursday Night Football intro. Rocking!
The Persian woman who is 43 and a hottie of all hotties, and closer to my son’s age (31) than my own (59). Life is good.
lol Raven, you couldn’t possibly annoy me! Well, not today anyway…
I somewhat agree with all the points you made. I have said many times that he has an “ugly” game, compared to, say, Melo. He’s lefty, his shot is funky looking, he’s not particularly telegenic, etc. and he’s even uglier (basketball speaking) when he goes into hero ball mode, and even worse when he fails in that mode.
But what has bugged me is when folks say ridiculous stuff like the team would be better if Obi took his place, or that he’s physically in decline, or that he was unlikely to ever be all-star level again after 2020-21 because there will never be empty gyms again, or that he should be traded for peanuts, or even worse, with assets attached. Obviously those things were difficult to rebut in real time at this point last year, but time has revealed those takes for what they were. And I’m not saying that there wasn’t data to support those takes. Only that the data was interpreted in the most jaded possible way, and that some of that tendency was rooted in the points you made above.
Fournier is listed at 20 on BKRef for his first season (sorry Alan, had to double check because I remember him being pretty young) and Hield was 24. So Fournier has been around 4 years longer.
She’s young, hot, and likes having her spelling corrected? Don’t blow this.
She doesn’t need to have her spelling corrected. She speaks and writes pretty close to perfectly. I’ve always found this with non-native English speakers: when they learn the language, they don’t learn it with all the lazy and careless habits that most American native English speakers pick up along the way. It actually makes logical sense, when you think about it. (She also speaks fluent French, but I refuse to lose her to Fournier. I’m sure he’s got one of his own already, anyway.)
