I’ll bet you a nickel against nothing that Grimes doesn’t get Fournier’d. That’s an infinite rate of return, which is much more confident than 250 to 1

The Mets, while on life support, are definitely still breathing. They would need to go 14-2 or something like that so not getting any hopes up, but at least they seem like they are playing for something.

What sport do these… “Mets” play, Z-Man? I’m unaware of any sport in the New York metropolitan area that is not basketball at this point. There is no other sport, there are no other teams. Right?

More seriously, even though I have confidence that this is a team with a reasonably high floor — barring catastrophic injury, we should at worst be the eighth seed in the East — the PTSD part of me fears that this will be like the Giants, where we’re all wildly overestimating our potential based on a season where we ground out wins over more talented teams.

But of course, the Giants have only played one game this season. And we have two seasons out of three’s worth of evidence that, so long as Thibs has a roster with his kind of players — and he very much does this year — we’ll at least be in the playoff mix.

Pardon my lateness..been down with COVID all week. But..I can’t believe the talk around Kevin Porter is “trade”. The MF needs to be in jail. Listen..I get it if it’s self defense, but even if it were, he still went way too far. I’m gonna paraphrase something that I believe strongly, something that either the Prophet Muhammad or Elijah Muhammad said: “A civilization that does not protect and uplift its women, is not a civilization at all”. Violence should be a last resort in any situation, and even then- you CANNOT be THAT violent towards women. Period. And it has nothing to do with the bs “fairer sex” thing. Without women we are not born. IMO, that should say more than enough about how special women are for this world.

    Just..UGH!
    Ok..rant over

The Mets, while on life support, are definitely still breathing. They would need to go 14-2 or something like that so not getting any hopes up, but at least they seem like they are playing for something.

I’ll tell you the only things I wanna see from my Mets the rest of the way:
    1. The continued big league development of Senga, Baty, Vientos, and Mauricio.
    2. I’m gonna put Alvarez development in its own slot here because I think he’s a borderline star already, but I want him to raise his average so we can bat him higher.
    3. I am rooting so hard for Lindor to reach 100 RBI and 100 runs scored. The potential of him making the 30/30 club is nice, but I like 100 RBI and 100 runs more. Especially when you put it with his defense and him getting 25-plus HR and 20-plus steals. This guy can really do it all, and I think the doubters who think that because of his contract he should be batting .300 with 35 homers and 100 RBI every season are very shortsighted.

And then in the offseason, I hope Stearns and Eppler can find a middle of the lineup bat to support Alonso and Lindor. Preferably in the outfield.

Respectfully, Alan, I was stunned you put the idea forth given how vocal you’ve been on the topic of supporting players with histories of domestic violence.

If the idea is “well, we’d just be waiving him, so I don’t have to root for him”, that strikes me as the shallowest of excuses. You’re still advocating that we take advantage of domestic violence to move the team forward. The only difference is you’re cutting out the part where we hold onto the guy long enough to rehabilitate his trade value.

On a moral level, I don’t see the difference. You’re just cashing in on the amorality up front instead of later.

Porter gets paid either way, but if we trade for him he gets hit with NY taxes. We actually have a moral obligation to make this trade.

Many posters have done exactly what djphan is doing. Ptmilo once seriously asked me to deposit $1k in an escrow account when I casually said “I bet the Raptors can draft someone who outperforms Fred Van Vleet if we sign him to a mega deal.”

H: If we sign FVV for 4 years and the Raptors draft a PG with the 28th pick in this draft, I would put good money on whoever they draft being the better PG over the next 4 years.

PT: i will book this for any pick and any team fvv signs with

H: “Any team” wasn’t the bet.

PT: yes in gambling language this means i am giving you the option to get this action for your terms or for some other team bulls, cavs, etc. fvv signs with if you want it. only caveat is if it’s real it has to be escrowed. four years is a epoch among friendly strangers.

PT: for the record that wasn’t in the least meant as a thinly veiled call out to hubert for his (sure, stupid) take. he just baselessly seems like a fellow traveler in the lowly gutters of throwing money at inane esoterica for kicks. probably bad form, tho — sorry.

H: If it’s the Knicks, I’ll take the bet. I should probably get some odds on this but we can quibble about that if it comes to pass.

The hardest part will be settling on a metric to determine who added the most value, but we’ll cross that bridge if we get there.

You can name the dollar amount. Setting up an escrow account is fairly simple.

You’re just furthering my case that you are an AI.

I was definitely wrong about FVV’s worth at the time. But interestingly enough, looking at that draft, Immanuel Quickley probably would have been the best PG available for Toronto (assuming we wouldn’t have taken him if we had FVV). Desmond Bane was there, too.

On a moral level, I don’t see the difference. You’re just cashing in on the amorality up front instead of later.

Trading for Miles Bridges with the intention of playing him gives him a huge opportunity to continue his NBA career, make a lot more money, and generally move past what he did with barely a shred of accountability.

Trading for KPJ to cut him doesn’t do any of that. Not saying it’s totally ethically neutral–think there are decent arguments on both sides of that one–but it’s night and day from buying low on a player because he did something awful.

it’s night and day from buying low on a player because he did something awful

You would literally be buying low on Kevin Porter because he did something awful. That is the exact action you are pursuing.

The only difference is you wouldn’t play him.

For the record, I never advocated playing Miles Bridges. I just said sign him. I was thinking we hold onto him for a year and then auction him off for picks (which is exactly what Charlotte is going to do).

gives him a huge opportunity to continue his NBA career

Miles Bridges’ NBA career was 100% guaranteed to continue. It’s likely going to thrive when Charlotte trades him to a contender. That was always going to happen. You guys thinking he was going to be kicked out of the NBA for domestic violence was complete denial of everything that’s ever happened.

H: I would put good money on whoever they draft being the better PG over the next 4 years.

    DDB: whomever.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and take a guess that squeezing an asset out of Kevin Porter’s domestic violence issues is not really a Leon Rose kind of move. I don’t think we’re gonna have to worry about it y’all.

Please forgive this shameless plug, but I finally uploaded my first ebook on amazon.com a couple of days ago. Its listing is now up

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJ3ZRR8G

You can read the first five short chapters for free in the preview. Also, if you have Kindle Unlimited you can read it for free. Please note if you do check it out, the first few chapters have a lot of exposition as I tried to help my non-public school teaching friends understand some basic realities and terminology about being a teacher prior to the plot and satire really kicking into gear.

I’m a bit embarrassed to list it at $2.99 rather than $0.99, but after reading a lot about Amazon sales and royalties, I decided to go with that price point. The cover image cost me $12 to license, so I’m hoping that I can eventually get six sales so that I can recoup that investment.
    🙂

Miles Bridges’ NBA career was 100% guaranteed to continue. It’s likely going to thrive when Charlotte trades him to a contender. That was always going to happen. You guys thinking he was going to be kicked out of the NBA for domestic violence was complete denial of everything that’s ever happened.

Okay, but a team that traded for him would be directly complicit in this. Matter of fact, they would be helping him insure it is the case.

A team that trades for KPJ and cuts him would not be influencing the future of KPJ’s career in any direction. You could even argue such a trade is to his detriment, as it affirms he has no place in the league (it can be hard to come back from being regarded as waiver fodder).

Whether a trade is to the clear benefit of the abuser is a massive distinction!

Clash, it’s a topic I’m fascinated (and endlessly frustrated) with so I will definitely be reading! Congrats!

Signing Miles Bridges = capitalizing on domestic violence to make the team better.

Trading for Kevin Porter = capitalizing on domestic violence to make the team better.

If you can perform the mental gymnastics necessary to consider these two identical actions night and day, it just means you’re good at finding ways to circumvent your moral code.

And I agree with JK that this is not a Leon move.

It’s not even a good move if there were no moral issues. Porter’s salary would count this year, meaning it would put us in bad position for the repeater taxes and such.

It’s a dumb idea all around.

I’m not really in favor of a KP2 trade, but as a move, it would be helpful to 1. The Rockets, who would be turning a disaster and a lost player into a contributor and 2. Fournier, who desperately wants some playing time and could actually help the Rockets with his shooting.
Who it doesn’t help much is the Knicks. We don’t need more 2nd rounders, and the trade would give us less flexibility not more.
Leon seems like a charitable guy, but I don’t think he’ll want to make moves that don’t benefit the team.

Again, “providing a massive benefit to the domestic abuser” is an enormous distinction. It is pretty much the sole reason people hated the Miles Bridges idea.

I will repeat that I’m not saying there are no other ethical dilemmas associated with trading for KPJ and immediately cutting him. I’m saying whatever those may be, they are different, and I would strongly argue less clearcut, than those involved with directly facilitating Miles Bridges’ re-entry to the NBA.

Trading for Porter doesn’t seem like a Leon Rose move (debatable). Aller strikes me as a guy who would be an opportunist about it

Again, “providing a massive benefit to the domestic abuser” is an enormous distinction.

    Again, mental gymnastics.

If you’re seeking ways to improve your station based on a domestic violence incident, you have lost the moral high ground. Period. No distinction changed that.

Shout out to EB for adding much needed levity to counter my heaviness today, which I will now desist.

I’m in a weirdly good mood today, but don’t worry I’ll be back to yelling at everyone in the near future

Also I’m moving back to the East coast

Hubert, if you go back and read my comments yesterday, I was never actually advocating for it. I’m disgusted by Porter Jr’s actions, just as I was by Miles Bridges’. I was wondering under what circumstances the Knicks would consider it, because I imagine every NBA front office is having conversations on the subject.

There is also that difference of KPJ never actually being on the team, but fuck that guy. I wouldn’t want the Knicks to be paying his salary for a season, even if draft picks came our way.

well said poindexter…predatory behavior, is predatory behavior…

women, children, disabled folks, impoverished folks all deserve to not be abused…shoot men too i guess…

from the artifacts found from paleolithic (pre-3500 bce or so) cultures it would seem women have not always been second citizens in society…for whatever reason, their roles in society really took a hit when “civilization” first started kicking off…

i was watching some show where a journalist was visiting this tribe in africa where the women where indeed in charge of the location…

the men were assigned the more menial, labor intensive tasks in the community…

when the men were interviewed almost all of them hated the situation…the women unanimously expressed the desire to not marry…

Congrats, ClashFan, that is awesome. I’m going to check it out during the weekend. 😉
And this got me thinking that i must try to develop some talent or else i’ll be expelled from the group! 🤭 😀

I’ve been thinking about Porter trades. If the Rockets do a trade it’s because they want a useful player. They would trade picks for a useful player and Porter would just function as matching salary. The only benefit to Porter is that if the receiving team waives him he can sign with anyone. What would be bad for Porter is if the receiving team keeps him but tells him to go home (which could happen). If the Knicks did that, I wouldn’t be so mad as they would basically be trading Fournier for draft picks, which is fine.

This argument reminds me of another debate. Some charities don’t want to take contributions from the wrong people. However, the Salvation Army doesn’t agree with this. They will take money from anyone. Their philosophy is that they are putting the money towards a good use and it’s ok for bad people to contribute to doing good.

The thing people seem weirdly missing here with the KPJ trade idea is the absolute ‘moral outrage,’ fake clickbait or otherwise, that would occur in every media outlet out there if the Knicks did this. Even if they cut him later that afternoon. The blowback would be enormous and enormously damaging, because media and internet. The FO certainly recognize this, so it’s an interesting thought exercise (or not) but I don’t think it has a shred of potential in happening. Like zero.

I wouldn’t want the Knicks to be paying his salary for a season, even if draft picks came our way.

Fair enough, Alan. It read to me as if there wouldn’t be an objection if we received sufficient draft compensation. But if there is no amount of compensation that you would accept to cut the guy, then my surprise was unwarranted.

Some charities don’t want to take contributions from the wrong people. However, the Salvation Army doesn’t agree with this. They will take money from anyone. Their philosophy is that they are putting the money towards a good use and it’s ok for bad people to contribute to doing good.

Funny you mention this bc I’m on charitable board that had this conversation last night. I am firmly in the Salvation Army’s camp but I am (as usual) in the minority.

oh man, did i spell it wrong…gosh darn it…

i like having folks around to keep us on our toes…i be missing you and E when you all disappear for some time…

hope your day is moving along smoothly doogie…

i gotta ask though – what’s your favorite sciencey subject?

oh shoot doogie, you’re right…meant to say neolithic instead of paleolithic…the paleolithic stuff is from 10,000 bce and earlier…it was reference neolithic cultures where i had read that gender roles were more equitable…

right now looking in on the indus valley civilization (from pakistan to the coast along the indus river)…need to read a lot more though – i heard an interesting note that excavations revealed neither palaces (for kings/queens) nor major warfare in the area during their time (about 2500 bce – 1900 bce)…it seems they were mostly focused on trading…

I don’t have a favorite “sciency” subject, unless it has to do with an attractive woman who is interested in it.

    @ShamsCharania
Free agent center Usman Garuba has agreed to a two-way NBA contract with the Golden State Warriors, sources tell me and
@anthonyVslater. The former Rockets first-round pick is coming off averaging 8.2 points and 4 rebounds for Spain in the FIBA World Cup.

The Garuba dream — such as it was — is dead. Long live the Nate Knight dream!

oh gee thanks doogie…now i’m really feeling old…

i probably do need to be more focused on pussy and cars…i envy your hormonal levels…got a little extra testosterone to share please 🙂

    Edit:

Both words are acceptable in the English language, but they have different meanings. Sciency is an adjective used to describe something that appears to be scientific but lacks scientific evidence or credibility. On the other hand, sciencey is also an adjective used to describe something that is related to or resembles science, but it may not necessarily be scientific.

I’m old myself. I’ll be 60 in April, but I attempt to counteract that by dating women in their 40s. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t.
I don’t care about cars. I care about music quite a lot.

This is not one of those moral dilemmas with no easy answer. This is just basketball. So it’s actually very easy to say “no”.

If some of Mengele’s research yielded information that could be used to find a cure for a deadly disease, should we use it?

If experimenting on chimps leads to a cure for paralysis, is it OK to put a few of them through torturous experiences and kill some of them?

What about torturing little puppies to gain extremely valuable scientific knowledge?

    Pigs?

These would be tougher for me.

It’s way too easy to say no to a Porter trade. He’s a scumbag. This is just basketball. We don’t need to win that badly. Fvck him. He’s Houston’s basketball problem and the legal system’s problem to deal with.

awwwwww, old man hug to ya doogie…

old man hug = eye to eye contact, followed by a solemn and sincere nod of the head…no flesh touched, no words spoken…

i’ll indulge a bit more on the porter thing…i know i ain’t the only one who’s experienced having people they love and care for get their ass whooped by some genetic fuck up…

not sure what it is about “instincts” that drives someone to wanna choke another…it’s a sad thing though…that’s a trauma event for you there…

talked to a couple of ladies in my life, ma and my friend (still hasn’t moved out here yet, job stuff), it’ll happen when it’s meant to…

my dad (6’3” 200 or so in his prime) was an addict with anger issues (mental illness for sure)…i remember one time we were in this restaurant and dad was parking the car, when he came in he was a bit ruffled and dirty – he had just had a fight in the parking lot…

he didn’t seem very upset at all, kind of happy actually…

anyways, mom who’s 5’3″ and probably like 130 or so back then, assured my father that if he ever put his hands on her she would stab him in his sleep…

he believed her, i believe her…he never touched her…my friend (about 5’7″, maybe 140?) told me she actually brought a knife to high school to show some boy who had taken an unwanted and aggressive interest in her…

i 100% believe she would have used it…

i got my own story to tell, was in college, first girlfriend, she was a physical person…we were madly in “whatever”…toward the end of our romantic relationship at one point put my hands on her to push her out of my room late one night…

we had recently had our ring ceremony…my ring hit her head and she pretty much crumbled to the floor, was gonna take her to get some help – about, she was worried abut “me” getting in trouble…

    not my finest moment…

serious talk though right…sometimes basketball, just ain’t basketball…

I care about music quite a lot.

have you listened to the music of some of the different posters?

    some really really good stuff…

i think now i’ve listened to maybe 4 or 5 different posters recordings…i had them bookmarked on my work computer 🙂

speaking of one of our resident authors, i can’t remember if clash fan linked anything he had done…

    any specific genres you enjoy?

    Speaking of music…

I know most of you guys are younger than me. I’ll be 65 in a few months. Eventually, (it will come faster than you think), you’ll be pushing 60 too.

I’m not a “very good” guitarist. I’m “meh” with occasional moments of “hey that was good”. Point being, even with a small amount of time dedicated to it each week, I keep getting noticeably better. So if you discover something later in life that you enjoy and want to get better at it, I just wanted to let you know it’s very doable. I might be good by 70. 🙂

KPJ is a troubled young man. Troubled family history, troubled history. If we trade for him, we have a plan to help him, not because he can be arbitraged as an asset. When we traded for Latrell I held my nose until I saw that the plan was that we can rehab him.

Brian, the people demand a new thread! Ryan Arcidiacono has been re-signed!

We’re now one man away from an all Nova lineup

We all know who we wish that fifth guy could be, EB. Alas, it’s not meant to be.

Also, I’ve never heard of an Exhibit 9 before.

    @IanBegley
Ryan Arciadocono’s deal with the Knicks is an Exhibit 9 pact, per sources. Knicks have 14 players on standard NBA deals, so they have an opening to add another player on a traditional deal prior to the regular season. If he makes regular season roster, Arcidiacono’s deal can be no longer than one season and no more than the veteran’s minimum.

So instead of taking a chance on the upside of tyty and Garuba two 21 year old 1st round picks we signed 26 year old Knight, 26 year old Jefferies, 25 year old Roby, 29 year old Arcidiacono, 23 year old Washington jr., 23 year old Jacob Toppin to contracts and 26 year old Charlie Brown Jr., and 25 year old Skapintsev to exhibit 10 deals.

Other than Martin we can’t even take end of the bench fliers on players with upside.

I don’t know why at least a couple of our g-league, two-way and end of the bench guys couldn’t be under 22 with at least some home run potential.

It’s like Leon is allergic to upside gambles even the lowest risk ones.

We all know Arcidiacono’s making the roster. Over who though? Roby? Jeffries? They better have a plan to trim the fat on this roster because we are the NY Wildcats and Thibs does appreciate Arcidiacono *shrugs* lol

Wasting back of roster spots on guys with infinitesimal upside is a big part of what we do here

We’re not going to kick wasting back of roster spots on guys with infinitesimal upside to the curb

We all know who we wish that fifth guy could be, EB. Alas, it’s not meant to be.

Alas, Archie & Mikal didn’t even play on the same team. They both won titles with Brunson & Donte tho!!

There’s a reason Houston cut both players and there’s a reason neither player got more than a two-way deal. I wouldn’t describe either as high-upside guys either.

Garuba has zero offensive upside. At 6’8″ 220 he’s a massively undersized C. He was worth a risk in the draft for a pick rich Rockets but he’s got a lower ceiling than Knight at this point and doesn’t fill a need for the Knicks.

I liked Tyty in the draft but there was always questions about his athleticism. He probably tops out as a good bench guard. More salient, he probably doesn’t want to sign with us and play behind Brunson, IQ, and Deuce.

Miami showed the 2nd chance market is flush with talent. It makes sense to chase the guys there who fill actual needs instead of a 4th PG or C.

These guys generally don’t work out. It’s why it’s so amazing that Miami found guys who did work out. I’m not really sure they are good enough to fill actual needs.

I think Garuba has real upside. He won Rising Star in Europe a couple years ago, was efficient with good rebs and defensive numbers in Houston, and showed some offensive upside in FIBA for Spain averaging over 17 points/36 for them.

I am willing to bet he will look much better in Golden State’s well run offense over the summer league level mess he was in Houston last year.

I would rather have him than Sims, Roby, or Knight. I think he is both better now and has more upside.
