No joke that was a devastating result in the 2nd game. The Thunder will likely be there in the Finals and we needed a chance to get information before the start of trade season a lot more than we need the NBA cup.

Brunson downplayed the notion of not receiving enough credit (re MVP), but was appreciative of Brown’s sentiments.

“No, I don’t read into that stuff,” Brunson said. “[It] just shows the trust and the faith that he has in me, and I’m very thankful of our relationship over these past couple months. It’s only going to continue to get better. Our communication has been great.

“It’s a growing experience, a learning experience but I’m really thankful for our relationship.”

Couldn’t watch last night. Great result.

Really enjoyed Jalen and Josh in the presser discussing how unathletic Jalen is.

    Vibes are excellent.

My sister just walked me through a play where OG gummed up the offense by going station to station, getting to the door he was supposed to die the past without paying attention to the defenders, where if he just shifted to another position he would have opened a lane for Mikal to the hoop. She thinks he’s just not an intuitive player on offense.

Rama, could you point up this play? I’d love to see it.

After the two cup games, Knicks are now #3 in Ortg (0.1 behind Houston), #9 in Drtg, #3 in SRS. It’s pretty good, folks.

Their offense was not very efficient earlier in the year, but now they have the #6 eFG% in the league (#2 in the East).

    1

OG may not be intuitive on offense (his forays into the paint give me horror movie dread vibes) but he is a 5-man defense in and onto himself.

Wemby is starting to turn me off with his big mouth.

Wemby and the Wings will be a good challenge. I would have preferred OKC but who knows? Maybe the Spurs are their kryptonite.

During last year’s Christmas game, Wemby had his way with us, and Sochan was the only other Spur who had a notable game on offense. Meanwhile, the Spurs had no answer for Mikal, and KAT shot well, and that was enough in a game where OG and Brunson were both shooting poorly. Without Deuce, Fox is likely to be a problem for us. The hope is that even if Wemby’s supporting cast plays better, our new offense will nonetheless overwhelm them.

And Hubert, while I would have liked to test ourselves against OKC, just to get a sense of how close we really are, what moves might need to be made before the deadline, etc., the Spurs aren’t exactly slouches. Win or lose, we’ll learn a good amount from the final. (Which is all I care about. The Cup itself? Whatever.)

I mean, mission accomplished as far as I’m concerned re: the Cup. I would honestly love for Brown to channel his inner Pop and play the starters a nominal amount of minutes, while telling the scrubs “Hey, you want the money, go get it, we got bigger fish to fry.” It would be an atrocity if one of our guys gets hurt in this stupid exhibition, or that the starters have to play big minutes again to grind out a win prior to the toughest stretch of basketball scheduling this season. 200 G’s is plenty.

“The Spurs are practically feudal – let’s all have champagnie until the kornet blows and we can hunt fox with vassals around the castle”

    lol rama

anyone know how “road” and “home” teams were determined for last nights games? seems random

“anyone know how “road” and “home” teams were determined for last nights games? seems random”

For the earlier games was about seeding based in IST group play record, with the same tiebreakers as for the wild card. I’m not sure how home team for the finals is determined, or if there is technically a home team. Seems like a coin flip situation.

thanks z and good morning to you and all happy hanukkah and chag sameach to those who celebrate

Thanks doogie, given what just happened in Australia, it will be hard to have a Happy Hanukkah. Brown University, too. And pretty much everywhere. What a world.

Sochan was the only other Spur who had a notable game on offense.

That’s sort of embarrassing, but he’s no longer in the rotation so it shouldn’t happen again.

a little disappointed that huk never got off the bench in that high-leverage game we could have afforded 6 or 8 minutes of him on the floor i think difficult to argue with the result tho just noticed that suggs shot 8-for-8 on 2s

agree z very sobering news to wake up to have to do our best to keep moving forward

Thanks doogie, given what just happened in Australia, it will be hard to have a Happy Hanukkah. Brown University, too. And pretty much everywhere. What a world.

Unspeakable tragedy, but the incredible courage of the unarmed fellow who took down one of the shooters reminds us that most folks are good.

Kolek plus most/all of the non-Brunson starters seems to make sense as a way to both rest Jalen and take advantage of Kolek’s playmaking. When you play him alongside dudes who can score efficiently and/or move well without the ball, he’s a lot more helpful than when he’s trying to set up Yabu or Clarkson.

home or away probably doesnt matter for the championship game since it does not appear in the standings and the player and team stats dont count towards anything

i think its very odd that the nba is playing a normal schedule today and tomorrow in between the semifinals and the finals of this cup thing they need to do better on that somehow it makes the tuesday night game seem almost superfluous and anticlimactic and even more meaningless

And Hubert, while I would have liked to test ourselves against OKC, just to get a sense of how close we really are, what moves might need to be made before the deadline, etc., the Spurs aren’t exactly slouches. Win or lose, we’ll learn a good amount from the final.

I don’t think we’ll learn anything meaningful playing the Spurs.

We know we’re good enough to win the East, and we know it’s extremely likely we’ll face the Thunder if we do.

There’s only one thing we need to know and we needed to know it now while Leon is in the market for upgrades:

Do we have enough ball handling outside of Brunson to cope with the Thunder’s defensive pressure? Can anyone else even bring the ball up against these guys when they turn up the heat?

Having a chance to see Kolek & Clarkson play against them would have been huge. Maybe we don’t need to trade for someone like Donte or Alvarado. Maybe we desperately do.

    Now we have to guess.

I know it might suck for the Pacers and the fans who have tickets, but it would be great if the NBA postponed the Knicks-Indiana game on Thursday as a perk for going all-out in an exhibition. Same with the Spurs having to fly to Washington. While unintentional, it seems absurdly punitive for the “winners” of this stupid money-grab to have to fly from Vegas to a to play a game, and then immediately fly to another city for a B2B. Maybe they should let Washington fly to Indiana and let those two powerhouses battle it out.

FWIW I also believe that the cup hangover effect is probably real and didn’t want to actually win the final. I just wanted to get there and measure ourselves against the Thunder.

This competition is supposed to be modeled after association football but they don’t cram it all in like this and put the teams who win at such a disadvantage. It should take place over four months not four weeks.

“Maybe they should let Washington fly to Indiana and let those two powerhouses battle it out.”

Of course it just so happens that Washington is in Indiana today.

magic used 10 players yesterday, same as the thunder, spurs went with 9…

it looks like we’re down to 8 usable without deuce or landry…

“i think its very odd that the nba is playing a normal schedule today and tomorrow in between the semifinals and the finals of this cup thing they need to do better on that…”

If I thought that you even bothered to read the rules I would respond…

The fact that Yabu has a role causes me to express frustration. Just play Huk as the alternative to Mitch at the five.

Odd paeon to Brunson by Edwards today (Pound for Pound…). Recommended as there’s a nice clip of many of his highlights yesterday.

What I really liked from yesterday is the number of highlights by everyone. Multiple brilliant passes on breaks. Great defensive stands. Would have been tragic to lose with the number of great individual efforts.

    Here’s the article from RealGM:

“I don’t want to lie to you, it’s very difficult,” Yabusele said. “I’m a competitor first. It’s not a situation I thought (I would be in) coming here.”

Yabusele had what he described as a “complicated” communication with the Knicks coaching staff, led by head coach Mike Brown. Previously, Brown had said he’d be “patient” with Yabusele, as the big man adjusted to his new team.

I think we should be more open minded when we hear guys complain like this. We’ve gone down this road with Obi Toppin, RJ Barrett, Quentin Grimes, and Mikal Bridges; and all four of them turned out to be right.

Putting round pegs into square holes is a big part of what we do around here.

If you isolate the quotes and ignore Real GM’s incendiary commentary, Yabu didn’t say anything to justify being called clueless. He was asked a question, presumably a leading one, and he answered:

“I don’t want to lie to you, it’s very difficult. I’m a competitor first. It’s not a situation I thought coming here. I try to be ready whenever my name is called. I try to control my impact on the court, no matter how much time I get.“

Mind you this was all in French so we don’t know how faithful that translation is. Some of the phrasing may sound worse in English.

I’m not out on Yabu. He’s been improving and should get back to last year’s form fairly soon. I think Brown is leaning heavily on his starters for these cup games, but Yabu should get at least 15 min a night during the season. If he makes the most of that, he’ll see more.

I would have more sympathy for Yabu if he showed up in peak physical condition. I had watched quite a bit of film from last season in Philly, but when I saw him in person on opening night, I couldn’t believe it was the same guy. When it came out that he was actually 18 lbs. heavier than his listed weight, I couldn’t believe it. The hope was that he would be 18 lbs. lighter!

Now if he was one of those guys who theoretically moves just as well with all that weight on him, whatever. But that hasn’t been the case (is it ever, really?) He looked at least a step slow right from the start of the season on defense, and was missing wide open shots on offense. He seemed unable to get off the ground.

I get that “it’s been difficult” and all that, but it’s on him to get on a diet and get into the gym until he gets down to a “professional” level of body fat. He’s gotten minutes in 24 out of 25 games, which is more than he has deserved, and my guess is that Mike Brown would love for the “theoretical” floor-spacing bench big to actually show up. It was Yabu’s job to lose, and he seems to have lost it, fair and square.

The thing is, there is still no one in front of him for that role…the Knicks are filling it by either playing Hart and others more minutes, or going small, or throwing Huk and Diawara out there. If he busts his ass and starts playing better on both ends, he will get more minutes. If not, tough shit.

Like me, the Giants don’t seem terribly bothered about the outcome of this game…

Didn’t realize the championship was game 83 and doesn’t really count. It should totally count for playoff positioning or some kind of tiebreaker… Silly to me that they just try to hype up the money side of things when the top guys make 9 figures.

Z-Man, interesting post. Earlier this morning, based on your first post, I looked at some film of Yabu from last year and was thinking, “He was at least 20 lbs lighter,” so your 18 lb note makes me trust my eye. As you intimated, he’s shat in his own bed, so it’s up to him to clean it up. I appreciate that he’s frustrated, but that’s on him.

Meanwhile Tyler the Creator has absolutely shown up. If I had to guess I’d say he’ll need to spend the offseason shooting endless threes with a coach to become perfectly cromulent, but if he can get it up to the low 30s percentage-wise, he deserves floor time.

seems tasty hasnt read the rules about the cup either i dont blame him neither one of us cared about it enough to delve into the details we can still comment on it regardless tho

yeah kolek is looking better and better glad we didnt dump him

Like me, the Giants don’t seem terribly bothered about the outcome of this game…

I don’t even care very much about the draft pick, especially since the top of this draft doesn’t seem great. I just want to remove any remaining excuse for John Mara — or whoever’s in charge while Mara is undergoing cancer treatment — to keep Joe Schoen around. You have to idiot-proof things with this ownership group.

That they’ve rebounded without Belichick, while he makes a fool of himself down in Chapel Hill, does mitigate my annoyance at least a little.

I thought for sure this was going to be the beginning of a four game Giants winning streak that led to Mara handing Schoen and Kafka extensions after the season. I’ll be so pleased if they lose today.

The Giants are poised to turn around as quickly as New England. They almost got the #1 pick last year, too. All they did was nail their draft* and hire the right coach. If the Giants do the same they could be a contender next year, too.

    * FWIW my Pats fan friends say we made a terrible mistake taking Carter over Campbell. Campbell has completely solidified their line and looks like he’s going to be a stalwart tackle for a decade. Carter has some great peripheral stats but really hasn’t made a big impact and his maturity issue is concerning.

Raven, to be honest, I wouldn’t bet the house that he was all that much lighter last year, nor do I have any evidence bayone the eye test and that report to question Yabu’s dedication to fitness or to the game per se.

What I absolutely do have is evidence that he is not playing well enough to deserve more minutes on a championship-or-bust team than he has gotten. I don’t relly hold it against him that he expressed frustration at the situation, but in my view it is 100% due to his level of play.

I fully expect Brown to give him more opportunities to show out as the season goes on, whether out of immediacy due to injuries or out of hope that he might come around and earn a bigger role in time for the playoffs. He has actually looked a bit better to me in recent games, and there’s 4 months left to the season, so we’ll see. That said, it would not surprise me in the least if he is traded before the deadline for a more useful player.

    My solution:

Cup counts as a regular season game. Winning team counts the win and replaces a loss on their schedule with a win. Losing team gets a win. The two opponents that were otherwise scheduled to play in the regular season game have to play eachother with the team with the worse record having to fly to play at the team with the better record.

While it would have been cooler to beat the Thunder, I think getting into the final period is a fun thing for the Knicks.

What I’m really getting routinely irritated about, though, is seeing players constantly drop from injuries. Holy shit, it is annoying. The Knicks have already lost OG for a bit, but in general, they’ve been pretty darn healthy, and that scares the shit out of me, because everyone else in the league seems to lose star players every other game. It feels like you’re just walking a tightrope at all times.

Speaking of trades, assuming that a trade involving Mitch, KAT, etc. as part of a bigger deal for a major difference-maker can’t be found, I am hoping that the following players are still on the roster past the deadline (unless they also are included in a “win” of a trade for Giannis, etc).:

    Brunson
    KAT
    Mikal
    Hart
    OG
    Mitch
    Deuce
    Kolek

So starting tomorrow, our actual “improve at the margins” trade bait is:
    -Yabu
    -Clarkson
    -Huk
    -Dadiet
-Shamet (I think? Is he trade-eligible while injured on a non-guaranteed contract?)
    -Diawara
-Fugazy Washington first that will convey as two likely early second rounders…which could be quite valuable!
    -Other second rounders
    -1st round swaps

We are also up against the second apron, so have to deal with trade restrictions.

I don’t think we can combine minimum salaries, so sounds like our most expensive package outside of the “core 8” would involve Yabu, Dadiet, and a minimum guy (Clarkson, Shamet, or Huk)

However, we’d have to take a minimum salary back or promote a G-League guy to meet the 14-man requirement.

So it sounds like we top out at $8,347,000 (pro-rated). Is that correct?

With that in mind, who might be trade targets in that range?
    -Washington: Marvin Bagley III
    -Jazz: Georges Niang, Kevin Love
    -Blazers: Kris Murray, Duop Reath
    -Thunder: Kenrich Williams
-Pels: Kevon Looney, Saddiq Bey, Jose Alvarado
    -Bucks: Taurean Prince
    -Clips: Nic Batum
    -Warriors: Al Horford
    -Nuggets: Zeke Nnaji
    -Mavs: Dwight Powell
    -Nets: DayRon Sharpe, Haywood Highsmith

    Any others?

What is crazy to me is the amount of “calf strain” injuries. I don’t ever recall hearing about them as often as now…

The Knicks’ defense has looked a lot better to my eyes over the last few weeks. They’re #9 and defensive rating now, and you can’t attribute that solely to strength of schedule as they now rank 18th in SOS. Their 3pt% allowed is now right at league average.

The offense is looking really strong, as the Knicks are now 6th in eFG%, 4th in ORB%, and 3rd in TOV%. They’re 7th in 3PAr and 5th in 3pt%. Very healthy looking numbers on that side of the ball.

The schedule gets tougher coming up, but the team is playing better than they did early in the season. There does seem to be some gelling taking place.

What is crazy to me is the amount of “calf strain” injuries. I don’t ever recall hearing about them as often as now…

Yeah, the calf strain stuff is scary as fuck.

In terms of SOS, the Knicks have a pretty average schedule for the East. Some teams like Orlando have had a tougher schedule, but mostly because they had to play NY 4 times.

It’s very irritating that the Patriots are already this good again.

    HA — My jinx worked!

JK agreed, their defense looks a lot better now than it did earlier on. And aspects of the offense do as well. And there still seems like there’s more room for growth on both sides of the ball. No one is playing our of their mind and some guys are on the low side of career numbers.

Thing is, unlike in the last 5 years, it truly feels like the regular season doesn’t matter much at all. Assuming reasonable health, we would likely be a 50-60 win team so long as we had a decent coach, no matter who it was. It all comes down to playoff performance, and I don’t think anything can be assumed beyond “We have a really good roster and are very well coached, and the way things are shaping up, we should be able to beat anyone in the East in a 7-game series.

That’s a good problem for us long-suffering fans to have. And it’s cool that we aren’t constantly bickering about Thibs’ rigidity and the minutes police stuff. Brown is definitely a refreshing change on many levels.

But I do think that the schedule has been kinder to us than suggested by SOS or SRS. We really haven’t been tested by teams that are both good and fully healthy. It’s looking more and more like the Celtics will get Tatum back before the playoffs. After losing to the Magic twice, we beat them twice, but without Franz and with a less-than-100% Suggs. We beat the Cavs w/o Garland, and they will be w/o Mobley on Christmas Day. We haven’t played Detroit, or OKC, or Denver, or San Antonio, or the Lakers, or the Hawks, or the Sixers. We are 1-2 vs. a less-than-100% Miami. The Celts beat us pretty handily.

Now to be fair, we haven’t been fully healthy either for most of the season thus far…Hart was banged up when the season started, Shamet, Brunson, OG and now Deuce have missed time, and Mitch is probably still dealing with rust and soreness.

The bottom line is that as much as I am enjoying our recent play and respecting Brown’s coaching, I don’t think there’s much to take away thus far that we couldn’t have assumed coming in to the season, knowing Brown’s history. There’s not a single win on the ledger that I would call a “signature” win, meaning against a top team when both teams were close to full strength.

The upcoming 10-game stretch where we play the Sixers, Heat, Wolves, Cavs, Hawks, Pels, Spurs, Hawks, Sixers and Pistons in 18 days will tell us a lot more than any of the previous 25 games.

seems tasty hasnt read the rules about the cup either i dont blame him neither one of us cared about it enough to delve into the details we can still comment on it regardless tho

No doogie. Tasty is an intelligent poster with an interesting point. Your point just shows a lack of the most basic research.

The upcoming 10-game stretch where we play the Sixers, Heat, Wolves, Cavs, Hawks, Pels, Spurs, Hawks, Sixers and Pistons in 18 days will tell us a lot more than any of the previous 25 games.

If they are reasonably healthy, they’ll be fine.

I don’t think we can combine minimum salaries

that rule doesn’t apply between dec 15 and the deadline

Cavs lost to the Hornets and are now 15-12.

This blog would self implode if that was the Knicks

“that rule doesn’t apply between dec 15 and the deadline”

Interesting! Is it true that for us it doesn’t make much difference because if we combine them we won’t be able to have 14 players and stay under the second apron?

Put differently, looking at my example above where we keep our top 8, what is the largest salary we can trade for that would enable us to fill 14 roster spots without breaking cap rules? I came up with that $8.347M number, is that close?

in general, they’ve been pretty darn healthy

They really haven’t, Brian. We have not had a major injury, but almost everyone has missed real time (except Mikal, of course). Brunson a few weeks, OG some weeks, Mitch a few weeks, Deuce in and out for various reasons, KAT a game here and there, Hart some games at the beginning of the season (and even when he came back he looked washed for a minute). And Shamet may be out for the season, so far as we know.

Great that Yabu and Clarkson haven’t missed time but, um, I don’t think that’s meaningful.

All to say things haven’t gone as smoothly as the team has made it look.

Put differently, looking at my example above where we keep our top 8, what is the largest salary we can trade for that would enable us to fill 14 roster spots without breaking cap rules? I came up with that $8.347M number, is that close?

i think they could maybe get as high as jalen smith ($9mm) if they deal (say) yabu, dadiet and a min if they wait close enough to the deadline for the two replacement prorations to be low enough.

@darules I don’t remember the exact play – it was in the second half, and not particularly notable; that is, it turned into a regular possession with a shot (can’t remember make or miss). She was more outlining his feel for the game – he was early down the court on a possession, Brunson had the ball, the defense wasn’t set, and Mikal had a lane to the hoop…but OG brought his guy there because that’s where he set up for the play. He was doing what he was supposed to do, but if he had recognized opportunity, it would have been an easy hoop. It happened too fast for me to see it, but when I said he’s a little more of a station to station player, she that’s it exactly – he doesn’t see the game the same way Hart, Mikal, Brunson and even KAT do. Which is probably why he’s our worst passer by a mile.

    1

Thanks as always. pt. Jalen Smith is kinda sorta interesting, but mostly not. Also would bring Naji Marshall into play, who I think is a lot more interesting, although looking at his stats I thought he was a better shooter than he actually is. Brook Lopez seems pretty cooked. Saric as well.

Not really shocking the Nets beat a Bucks team without Giannis but I’m pretty surprised they beat anyone by 45

Actually Jalen Smith’s stats make him more interesting than I thought he was back in Indiana. Seems like he has trouble staying in rotations for a guy that on paper can shoot, rebound, and defend. He’s still only 25.

Interesting! Is it true that for us it doesn’t make much difference because if we combine them we won’t be able to have 14 players and stay under the second apron?

We get to sign prorated deals, so if we dump a min salary player we could sign a new one for less money. So by the midpoint, we could make a trade that tacks on a minimum player for salary matching & sign 2 new minimums for the same price to meet roster requirements.

We could also pull some Aller BS and go under the minimum for 2 weeks with a trade, then sign non-guaranteed players to get to the roster minimum, then cut them and go for another 2 weeks below the minimum before signing players.

So while having only $148,000 of room is a pretty big restriction, there are ways to work around it. If you wait till the deadline, you can basically add up all our minimums then subtract the prorated amounts needed to replace them and we could still meet the roster minimum… not that you’d want those guys seeing the floor.

Thanks EB. I still can’t really reckon the answer to your question: what is the absolute most we can spend on a single player if none of our starting 5 plus Deuce, Mitch, or Kolek are in the deal? Is it more than the $9M that ptmilo suggested? Are you saying that the minimums are roughly 2:1 (outgoing vs. new prorated signing) around the time of the deadline? Does that push it up to $11M or so?

I think there’s a way to get to $11M if you move Shamet, Huk, Dadiet, Clarkson & Yabu and dip below the roster minimum for the max number of days, but then you need to convince a team to cut 4 players and then sign 4 DaQuan Jeffries for the end of the bench.

Idk, it’s complicated. Probably just go with ptmilo’s number and call it a day.

Man… the Bucks definitely need to blow it up after that loss. There’s clearly no route to ever winning again with hardly any picks, an awful coach, a terrible FO, and a roster maxed out with garbage (minus Giannis).

I think winning on Tuesday and putting up a Cup Championship banner at the garden is a good step in the right direction and long overdue.

In soccer, fans, teams and players pride themselves on winning everything they played for. Especially as you get into quaterfinals and semis. Wemby gets this and that’s why he came back from the injury to play. He’s going to try to go for another christmas type game.

Lakers pulled out a weird win vs. Phoenix, LeBron. fouled on a 3 with 3 seconds left and then blocking Grayson Allen, making up for 8 turnovers.

“I think winning on Tuesday and putting up a Cup Championship banner at the garden is a good step in the right direction and long overdue.”

I mean it is kind of a fugazy banner but at the same time, those Atlantic Division banners are pretty fugazy as well. Whatever.
