From the last thread… sorry, had a busy weekend… Welcome Mr Jackson, i hope you post more often as it’s always refreshing to have new voices and adding members to the community. 🙂

Their 5th starter, Michael Porter Jr., posted a -2.2 BPM.

Quick note on this, when evaluating the Nuggets this year, I wouldn’t put too much weight on Porter’s playoff stats. He was playing hurt and it wasn’t just some minor thing. He could barely move one of his arms. If it was the playoffs, there’s no chance he would gave been on the court.

Michael Porter Jr. played through a left shoulder sprain he suffered in Game 2 of the 2025 NBA playoffs against the Los Angeles Clippers. The injury, a Grade 2 sprain of the AC joint, should have sidelined him for 4-6 weeks, but he chose to play through the pain despite it affecting his performance. The injury significantly limited his shooting and ability to rebound effectively

The Clarkson debate is similar to the Payne debate except on steroids (assuming he has plenty left).

We needed some scoring help on the bench and we needed a backup PG. He fit that role and was cheap. The problem is he has no conscience and is not really a PG. He’s going to make some huge shots, but it’s very likely he’s also going to shoot us out of a game here or there . Also, even when he’s playing well on offense he will often give up as much or more on defense.

I’d WAY rather have a healthy Brogdon in that role. He’s not going to give us the same high octane scoring and excitement, but he’ll score, play with a high IQ, will run the offense better and play some defense.

IMO healthy Brogdan is a better basketball player than healthy Clarkson and always was. I don’t know which has more left. I just know who I’d prefer if they were both healthy and reasonably close to peak.

I think that’s why it’s a good idea to have both. If one is failing, we have the other.

brogdon is for sure the better overall player but i dont see their roles as being anywhere near the same thing brogdons role would be to run the offense and shoot when he has a good shot and clarksons role would be to shoot regardless

I’m actually not so worried about Clarkson from a W/L perspective, as while he might shoot us out of quarters I don’t think he’ll play enough to tank a game if he’s coming up empty. I am presuming, however, that he’ll lead the team in pillows thrown at the screen…

i have a feeling that mike brown will give clarkson a medium-sized leash meaning when he misses his first couple he wont pull him immediately but hell pull him if he gets to something like 1-for-6

I don’t care about specific stats with Clarkson. We need a wild card on this team and Clarkson is a wild card. We didn’t really have one last year.

outside of Payne’s one quarter in game one of the playoffs, we didn’t really have that guy who can come in and completely take over a game and win one for us just by going off.

Sure, Clarkson might lose us a game in the playoffs too. But that’s on the coach to recognize when he’s in danger of doing that and pull him out of the game before we does that. But he also is capable of winning us a game.

Every team needs a wild card. A little crazy. Clarkson brings that.

To speak to what Z-Man and a few others have been saying, Clarkson’s last game was very telling, but mostly in a good way to me. As was said, most of his ‘bad decisions’ showed up as FGA, in that not all his shots were the best choices (regardless of going in or not); but he also broke down the defense and dropped the ball off for easy baskets a few times.

If he can keep doing that last bit I’ll take a few forced shots, I suppose.

Just bees and things and flowers
Just bees and things and flowers

this song has me wishing I understood the mechanics of song writing…not sure but I think this portion of the song is called a “pre-chorus”…it is just perfecto…

by any chance, anyone know if that’s the correct term for that part?

something about the way it sounds just works so wonderful for me…

funny, whenever I think of the artist it’s always one word: roy-ayers 😊

love how so many great instrumentalists have these vocal gems in their catalog…

that’s right: feel what I feel when I feel what i feel when i’m feeling…

I truly don’t get the trepidation about Clarkson, or the worry about his shot selection. It’s a very common genre of 6MoY-type “microwave” bench scorer….Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams, JR Smith…that are incredible valuable IFF utilized correctly and when alternatives are present. Sure, they are inefficient and take some dumb shots, but that’s kind of what you get in that genre and in that role. That’s really the key here…as was noted, Brogdan is just a different genre of 6MoY-type, the steady hand that makes everyone else better. In fact, a combo of Brogdon and Clarkson is a legit NBA starting backcourt. The good news is that neither guy has to be 6MoY for us…they just need to be 8MoY, 9MoY or 10MoY.

My main issue is with their health, and to a lesser degree, their age, although the two are related. Unlike Derrick Rose, neither player is nursing a career-altering injury…still, considering how many games they have missed in recent years, both guys just seem to be too brittle to be counted on for extended play. However, they are in roles that can be either limited or eliminated as necessary. They can probably even be salary-dumped before the deadline at a minimal cost.

But if they are healthy and not in major decline, both guys are going to be very positive pieces for us…the same way that Shump and JR were assets for the Cavs after that trade.

Meanwhile, I don’t understand anyone pining over the likes of Cam Payne and Delon Wright. The upgrade to Clarkson and Brogdon is pretty blatantly obvious.

I feel like the CLA article from the Athletic posted on the last thread did’t utilize it’s 4000 words very effectively. The only real basketball example it gave was using pool noodles, but I’ve seen mainstream guys doing that for a while just to nullify the height advantage players have over coaches. Also, if Ohtani used the method to bat through his TJ rehab why did the examples focus only on the pitching exercises he did? Anybody else feel a little under-informed after reading that lengthy piece?

Roy Ayers wife taught at the same school that I did and we became friendly. Got to meet him about 6 years ago. Very cool dude ( of course).

howdy g-man, good to see your words 🙂

hope you are well, and are recovering successfully from your earlier health thing…

my mind is sometimes a slippery and leaky vessel – you don’t remember asking me a couple of years ago about if I had completed a last will and testament do you?

for some reason your name pops in to my head when I think of it…the convo has stuck with me for years – even while continuing to actively procrastinate on the subject…despite whatever bravado may come to mind at the time – the whole: you’re gonna die sooner or later messes me up a bit…

anyways, hope you are well g-man, and if it was you: good looking out and gracias senor…

It’s worth checking in once in a while just to see the musings of Geo… I definitely remember encouraging you to get a will and living will done… Too many times I’ve seen the problems it can cause when things are not written down in black and white… I’m doing well, thanks for asking… I’m in much better shape since my bypass surgery… Roy Ayers in the 70’s is a big part of the soundtrack of my life… You’re lucky to have met Mrs. Ayers Bo… What a thrill…

I don’t know how we find minutes for both Clarkson and Brogdon… If we have to pick one for regular minutes, my vote goes to Brogdon… Also, I hope we can keep Matthews

I don’t think there’s a chance that Brogdon gets more minutes than Clarkson, but we’ll see.

The more I think about it, the more I really don’t want to sign either Matthews or Shamet and just keep the kids. In order of preference:
-Keep both Dadiet and Kolek, sign Brogdon and Diawara
-Keep Dadiet, trade Kolek, sign Brogdon, Matthews and Diawara
-Keep Dadiet, trade Kolek, sign Brogdon, Shamet, and Diawara
-Keep Kolek, trade Dadiet, sign Brogdon, Matthews, and Diawara
-Keep Kolek, trade Dadiet, sign Brogdon, Shamet, and Diawara
-(caveat: if possible with delay/pro rated) Keep Kolek, trade Dadiet, sign all of Brogdon, Shamet, Matthews, make Diawara a 2-way
-Trade both Kolek and Dadiet, keep all of Brogdon, Shamet, Matthews and one of Diawara or Tosan

I think possibility #4 or 5 is the most likely outcome.

I think tonight’s game is going to be pivotal in deciding who stays and who goes…assuming that those decisions haven’t been made already. The Wiz are a good test, they are a young team with players fighting for minutes and roster spots so should play very hard and serious for all 48.

I like Dadiet, but I think we’re pushing in all the chips this year… I don’t either he or Kolek will help much this year…

Yeah gk, I just wish whatever is going to happen would happen already. Even though we’re talking about guys who won’t play much if at all (barring disaster!) it is still unsettling to think about.

My concern isn’t with Clarkson’s playstyle. My concern is whether or not he’s washed. He’s 4 years away from his 6moty award, heading into his age 33 season, and hasn’t been as effective as earlier in his career.

Hate to see Dadiet leave for the all in bet, gk. Part of the reason is I’ve grown accustomed to rooting for a youngin to develop, and Dadiet is a logical candidate (as an aside in the 90s I couldn’t care less about the youngins as going all in each year made perfect sense; so I guess 20 years of poor teams changed my mindset and perhaps incorrectly). But the other part is Brogdon’s injury history. Taking a flier on it versus other less injury prone players is one thing; giving up an asset to do so is another..

EB I agree that we should be at least a bit concerned about that, but there is very little reason to believe that he is. I get that his last two years haven’t been encouraging on that front, but as I posted yesterday, he’s had a rash of fully recoverable injuries during that time.

Apparently the starters aren’t playing tonight, so we’ll get a good, long look at these guys.

Cam Payne’s game is not aesthetically pleasing but he was an effective bench player for us. He had 16.5 points and 6.7 assists to 1.7 turnovers per 36. His efficiency wasn’t great but he also created his own shot a high percentage of the time.

If Clarkson is as good as Payne was, I’d call that a win.

And the 2 seasons before that he had a combined 0.7 OBPM. Is that good enough to overcome his atrocious defense?

okay then doogie, my guess on that section of the song about bees, things and flowers is that it is either a pre-chorus or an interlude…

final answer: going with it being an interlude…great word to describe what’s in between…

underrated component of a great album, almost forgotten….remember how fun the interludes were on the chronic…

kind of wish he had used that word combo as a refrain…

Ms. Ayers is one of the strongest people I have ever met. Her mere stare would shut down the most difficult to control students.

“If Clarkson is as good as Payne was, I’d call that a win.”

If Clarkson is *only* as good as Payne was, I’d call it a significant disappointment. The entire reason for signing Clarkson was to improve on Payne, who was clearly available at the same price.

I agree that Payne was a solid player given his role for most of the year. But in any scenario where that role needed to be expanded due to injury or circumstance, he could not be counted on, especially for scoring. Most importantly, after a very good Game 1 vs DET, he was virtually unplayable in the playoffs and eventually got benched completely after game 2 vs. Indiana, even though Indiana played its bench players many minutes. If that happens with Clarkson, I will definitely be very disappointed.

Clarkson has been by far the more skilled and accomplished player. If he settles in at Payne-level mediocrity, that would be a loss in my book.

Roy Ayers’ son Nabil worked at 4AD when Ariel Pink was signed to that label. Lovely guy. His dad was apparently kind of a deadbeat dad and they had no relationship, which Nabil wrote about in his memoir.

it kind of sounds like roy acted as some kind of sperm donor to his mom, louise…sans like going through any clinic or anything…

probably need to hear from spouse or other kids to know what kind of dad roy was…

unfortunately am very familiar with the whole deadbeat dad thing…they are most certainly out there…

Fair point. Check out above video for more examples and background history. Hope this helps.

My worry with Clarkson is also about age-related decline. His archetype (ball-dominant scoring combo guard with a shaky 3 point shot) tends to age very badly and the drop off tends to be steep. If there is any drop off in the shot making he becomes a negative impact player really fast.

The Knicks must have a similar worry since all of the vets fighting for roster spots are also guards. Brogdon, Shamet, and Mathews are all redundant if we get peak Clarkson. If he is as good as he was 4 years ago him and McBride will eat up all of the back-up guard minutes.

Hedging our bets is probably a good idea and I could easily see Brogdon eventually supplanting Clarkson in the rotation if healthy.

His archetype (ball-dominant scoring combo guard with a shaky 3 point shot) tends to age very badly

Is this true? All the middle quarter usage soakers of his ilk that I can think of off the top of my head seem to have done it forever. Crawford played til he was 40; Lou Williams, Barbosa, Bobby Jackson all well into their mid-thirties. (This is an archetype that was never all that good to begin with).

The only way I’m okay moving a young player to sign two vets is if the second vet is not a guard. I still don’t love it but it at least makes a little sense. I think it would be bad roster management to move off of either Kolek or Dadiet to sign another 2 guard when Brunson, Bridges, McBride, Clarkson, Brogdon, and even Hart would be in front of them.

If we moved off of one of the young players to sign Brogdon and depth at the 4 or 5 it would feel a lot better than Brogdon and either of Mathews or Shamet.

I could see Bol Bol (unsigned), Trey Lyles (In Europe with NBA out), Kai Jones (In Europe with NBA out), Christian Wood (unsigned), or even keeping Len as all better options than Shamet or Mathews. Plus there might be even better options available once teams cut their rosters down.

I still hope we just stand pat with our young guys but I can see an argument for bolstering our lack of depth at the 4 and 5, especially if Hukporti isn’t ready for real minutes.

Is this true? All the middle quarter usage soakers of his ilk that I can think of off the top of my head seem to have done it forever. Crawford played till he was 40; Lou Williams, Barbosa, Bobby Jackson all well into their mid-thirties. (This is an archetype that was never all that good to begin with).

Crawford, Barbosa, and Williams were all better shooters (Crawford much better), plus Williams’s last useful season was at age 33, he was terrible his final two seasons, and Barbosa was done by 34, and not great over his last three seasons either. Bobby Jackson was a tenacious defender which extended his usefulness even after his scoring became less than average.

I think I read that if we trade Dadiet, not only could we get two vets now but we could potentially add one more once the buyout market emerges. We’d have just enough to get a vet in for 45 days or something like that.

I’m surprised nobody took a flyer on Kai Jones, who was just wrecking some shit down the stretch for Dallas last year. Obviously he has some flaws or he wouldn’t be signed to a contract in Turkey right now, but that’s the kind of guy I’d like to take a flyer on.

not at all in love with kai jones blue hair or his insta posts but i do kind of like his 19/11 on 84 percent fg shooting in the last dozen games for the mavs by the way we drafted him ourselves at #19 overall in 2021 and then traded him (shock!) to charlotte for a 2022 first rounder

I agree with Ben on wanting to keep the kids, but not on the point about age-related concerns. Clarkson doesn’t look washed at all, and his game should age better than those other guys. Crawford and Williams were not great shooters…career 34-34% guys. Clarkson is better than both of those guys inside the arc. As to Barbosa, he was helpful to the championship Dubs as a 8th-9th man, sort of the role that I hope Clarkson will occupy.

Beyond that, I think that whoever we wind up signing has to be “disposable” before the trade deadline, either by being non-guaranteed or as someone who can be absorbed and waived by another team if a second rounder and/or cash are attached. They you can still move on to other alternatives after the deadline.

I’m not ready to decide upon the end of the roster composition yet. Keeping a kid or two to develop is a good idea. Yeah, push the chips in but hey, we don’t need to destroy the future. I think Dadiet could eventually become an SF2 and that Kolek a decent PG2. But if giving them up in a trade upgrades a rotational spot, then I’m all for it.

Mike Brown said Brunson, Mikal, OG, KAT, Mitch, Landry, Hart and Hukporti will all be out tonight.

Clarkson is going to take approximately 10 million shots.

So what will lineups be tonight?
My guess:
Starters: Deuce, Yabu, Brogdon, Clarkson, Len
Bench: Dadiet, Tosan, Matthews, Diawara, Kolek, Jemison, Ryan, McCullar

I would prefer not to see much of Len or Ryan, but…

I suspect Dadiet gets one more start, to either boost his trade value or convince them not to trade him.

I think you are right about starting Dadiet tonight, maybe instead of Brogdon?

Beyond that, I dunno, Alan. The numbers game does not seem to work in Dadiet’s favor at all. It also seems unlikely that only Brogdon will make the vet cut. Maybe Kolek is gone? Damn, I just wanna know already.

Starting lineup confirmed to be: Brogdon, Clarkson, Deuce, Yabu, and Dadiet. Small!!

“…In the opening five’s places, Begley reports, tenured point guard Miles McBride will headline the way next to touted newcomers Malcolm Brogdon, Jordan Clarkson, and Guerschon Yabusele while the quintet is rounded by 2024 first-round pick Pacome Dadiet. Per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, Hukporti was originally set to get the start but is out due to an illness, as is Shamet. Hart is missing his third consecutive preseason game since going down with a back injury during the Knicks’ preseason opener in Abu Dhabi.”

Clarkson is going to take approximately 10 million shots.

I would like the over, please

This is going to be a seriously weird game to watch.

But hopefully informative.

I think this kid Tyler Murray has the goods as an announcer…has similarities to Breen. Also to Eddie Munster.

Clarkson getting the start, intrigued to see how this goes. In the real games I hope he’s exclusively on the court with Mitch, or at least Huk.

Suppose this is going the way you’d expect it to go when your defense has Clarkson/Brogdon/Dadiet/Yabu

kind of miss thibs mean mugging on the sideline…actually no i don’t…

deuce, clarkson and brogdon make for an interesting combo…very much a scrimmage type vibe…

Some of these Clarkson shots wouldn’t look quite so bad if he just set his feet. He does appear to be the only player to breakdown the defense off the dribble.

The Wizards are my 2nd favorite team this year. If they can be the 7th worst team in the NBA and get jumped twice in the lottery we’ll have the 9th pick in the draft.

Then again there is this from Kevin Pelton:

15. Washington Wizards
Projected wins: 14.2

Given how my model tends to compress the expected standings to avoid bad misses, this is a shockingly low projection for the Wizards. In fact, it’s the worst I’ve calculated for a team since adopting this model in 2010. After trading away veterans at the deadline and again this past summer, Washington doesn’t have a single player who rates in the league’s top 130.

I remain happy we got Jordan Clarkson for the minimum for an easily revocable role.

Plenty hedged, but still, technically, tepidly, cautiously pro-Clarkson.

Watching our group of 4-5 players competing for spots or to avoid being traded is an embarrassment of riches. We have too many players good enough to make an NBA team. I would not want to make the decision.

I like Landry Shamet and he seems to want to be here, but I think I prefer Evil Novak

HOW do we get this man to do the discount double check??? God knows Rodgers never got to in this town…

at least were shooting well from 3 this time kolek doesnt have it with 7 points and 4 assists in 7 minutes what do you want from him

It appears as if our scrubs are not as good as the worst team in the NBA.

It appears as if our scrubs are not as good as the worst team in the NBA.

To be fair, we are missing Hukporti and Shamet and Hart

Brogdon playing like he wants the TJ Warren treatment but at least he got the last layups in.

Yabu’s large butt doesn’t help him rebound at all. He’s also too short to play C on defense both as an anchor and 1-on-1.

McCullar standing out again.

Clarkson doing what we signed him for.

Halftime thoughts. I really like Brogdon’s game. Although being the only professional on the court helps. But he really knows what he’s doing.

I do not like Dadiet’s defense. Like even a little bit.

Didn’t get furious at Clarkson even once.

Not sure that Yabu is an upgrade from Precious.

To be fair to Yabu, the Wizards scrubs have lots of positional size and length and he’s being asked to play C. But yeah, he has looked pas bien.

I’m going to draw exactly zero conclusions from this garbage ass game populated entirely by scrubs, other than that I’m glad Mike Brown is giving the real players a day off

I don’t care that half these players don’t make the roster, the second team defense looks pitiful.

Deuce, Brogdon and Yabo might be the only rotation players that are playing today. So, aside from them, who makes the team that’s playing today?

Dadiet? Kolek? Matthews? Anyone else?

Well glad that mess is behind us! My observations:

-I don’t think Dadiet did much to help his cause. Meaning that whatever the decision was before the game hasn’t changed. The one thing he did well was rebound.

-Kolek showed guts and guile in the second half, but he got away with a lot of stuff in the paint that would not be available vs. a better team. I just don’t see any development from him, and think we could pick up a similar player on the waiver wire at any time.

-Clarkson and Brogdon both looked meh. Probably not easy to play with scrubs.

-Yabu looks slow and out of shape. Did not look like a high-IQ player. Totally dominated by the Wiz’s bigs. Worrisome.

-Jemison looks like a very decent 2-way contract big. Great energy!

-He looks raw and confused at times, but Diawara has hit a couple of spot-up 3’s and made some nice drives.

-I like things about Tosan but his FTs are as bad as Mitch’s.

-McCullar seems a couple of years away..maybe more.

-I hope I never see Alex Len or Matt Ryan on the floor in a Knicks uniform ever again.

Bottom line: Didn’t learn much from this game other than Washington’s scrubs looked way less scrubby than our scrubs.

I couldn’t watch the game, but I am looking at the box score and some of our deep bench have nice lines. Kolek, Jemison, McCulkar and Evbuoman stood out to me in the box score. Were they actually good?

Great interview on Jordan Clarkson by Edwards in The Athletic. Not. Big take-away is that Jordan has a mediocre memory. Also the only take-away.

KFNINJ, a lot of that decent play took place when we were down over 30 points. Kolek (and then Deuce) went on a very nice run to bring them back to within 20, the other guys made a couple of plays here and there, but mostly just random garbage time stuff.

KnicksFan, Kolek looked perfectly cromulent (20-4-6) if you didn’t watch him try and fail to shoot threes. Actually painful, a few of them. Jemison is a powerhouse who doesn’t yet know how to play basketball, and Ev and McCullar, like most of our scrubs, had a few good moments late in the game.
