As much as I liked Dart’s debut, if Dabol keeps using him as the illegitimate love child of Charley Tolar and Tom Rathman, he’ll have PTSD before the bye week.
Lol that’s a great description. I just watched highlights and it’s shocking. When I saw 10 carries in the box score I assumed he did a lot of scrambling for his life but no, it was designed.
I actually entered the season with a high estimation of Daboll. Then I realized 99% of that was attributable to Josh Allen’s success, which I assumed he played a major part in.
Between watching the defense under Bowen, seeing the predictable success of Jones in Indianapolis, and witnessing his master plan for Jaxson Dart be converting him to a fullback, I couldn’t be more out on the guy.
I hope there are no long term consequences of Nabers’ injury but it’s probably good for us that he miss this year.
some of those positions given are ridiculous mccullar has never been considered a point guard matt ryan and alex len should definitely be the first two that are left off jemison mccullar and shamet are next to go
josh allens success is much more attributable to josh allen than it is to daboll the guy worked really hard to clean things up
i guess evbuomwan and diawara have to be the last to go if we have to get it down to 14 diawara can stay if we only need to go down to 15 that leaves
Barring a trade, the max we can have on opening night is 17…14 on nba deals and 3 two-way deals.
The 3 most likely cuts are Len, Ryan, and Matthews. The two-way spots are currently filled by Jemison, Tosan, and McCullar.
Without a trade, only one vets min spot plus one rookie minimum spot are available due to the hard cap at the second apron.
It seems reasonable that no decision will be made until well into preseason so that players have a chance to battle for those spots. At the end of that battle, at least one of Brogdon, Shamet, Kolek or Dadiet will no longer be on the roster. That could change if a less likely trade happens involving Deuce, Huk, or Mitch.
The seemingly most likely outcome is that one of Kolek or Dadiet is traded so that both Brogdon and Shamet can be retained. But who knows?
Seems like beyond settling in on a rotation, Brown and the FO have two main jobs:
1) Determine whether to keep Shamet, Brogdon, or both
2) Determine who the least NBA-worthy player is between Kolek and Dadiet. Diawara too, since trading Dadiet would free up enough for Brogdon, Shamet, and another vet’s minimum….which I hope doesn’t happen.

One other point is that none of the two-way players (McCullar, Evbuomwan, or Jemison) can be on the 14-man roster without a trade. They have all have played in the NBA and are therefore not eligible for the rookie salary slot. They are in the same boat as Matthews and all of the other vets in that if they are on the roster it would have to be for the full vet’s minimum amount relative to the cap. They can be brought up to the NBA team on their two-way deal for a max of 50 days. They are not eligible for the playoffs unless their deal is converted to a full NBA deal.

I like Deuce, but if you told me at the trade deadline last year we somehow could flip him for Clarkson and Brogdon (even injured) I would have done that in a heartbeat. Unless Brogdon is truly washed or gets injured pre-season, Deuce is likely behind both of them. And if that is the case, trade him rather than Dadiet—but not because we want to sign Shamet!
1
To me, the most exciting part of the preseason isn’t the depth guys, but seeing the various lineups Brown puts out there. I imagine the schemes are going to be pretty vanilla in the exhibition games, so we won’t see too much of what he’s installing at both ends. I just want to see a lot of Mitch + starters and Deuce + starters, and also to see how Brown mixes and matches the reserves. Is it going to be a lot of hockey-style line changes? Or would we see minutes with, say, Brunson, Brogdon, Mikal, Hart, and Yabu? (Not saying that’s an ideal five-man grouping. It’s just the kind of weird lineup that Thibs wouldn’t use.)
1
I hope there are no long term consequences of Nabers’ injury but it’s probably good for us that he miss this year.
The only long term consequence will be that when Dabol speaks to Mara after the season he will say, “Jeez John, if Nabors didn’t get injured we wouldn’t have exposed Dart to the pummeling he took and we would have been at least 9-8 rather than the 5-12 we finished.”
1
I hear you, Alan, but my sense is that messing with lineups will continue well into the season and nothing we see in preseason will be all that surprising or meaningful. I fully expect a big dose of Mitch and KAT, especially to prepare for game 1 vs. Cleveland’s twin towers. I’m hoping to see very limited play by the starters in Abu Dhabi, maybe 20-25 mpg or even less, mostly in the first and third quarters. I think our top-6 are set (either Hart or Mitch will start) but Brown has to figure out how to utilize 7-10, likely Deuce, Yabu, Clarkson, and Brogdon. I think BE’s point about Deuce losing time to Clarkson and Brogdon is valid, although if Hart’s finger becomes surgical, that could change the calculus.
Just to elaborate, I think it’s important for Deuce to make some kind of leap this year. While he definitely had his moments and stretches, statistically he was kind of meh. If he can’t get out from under Clarkson and Brogdon, it would make sense to trade him prior to the deadline. I love the kid and would hate to see him go so I’m rooting hard for improvement.
Macri summed him up pretty well in his last newsletter, essentially saying that he is great value at his salary but flawed on both ends mainly due to his size.
Just learned that Brogdon lead the whole league during 2023-24 season in spot up 3PG% at 52%.
I’m thinking maybe we should sub out Mitch early in the 1st, bring in Brogdon, move Jalen off ball and go 5 out for the last 4-6 minutes of the 1st quarter every game. To start 2nd bring Mitch back with Yabu, Hart, Clarkson and Deuce. After 15-20 games, review and adjust.
This data focuses specifically on three-point attempts on catch-and-shoot opportunities during 2024-25 season:
Rank Player Catch-and-Shoot 3P%
1 Buddy Hield 58.5% 2 Garrison Matthews 57.1%
3 Taurean Prince 50.6% 4 Karl-Anthony Towns 47.0%
5 Norman Powell 46.6%
Brown and Leon are clearly placing a premium on spot up shooting and that’s why they looking into Mathews but think its criminal that we didn’t get KAT any open corner threes all season.
Especially since he was being guarded by much shorter players since opposing centers were playing off Hart.
Having a 6’7” player try to close in and meanigfully contest a catch and shoot 7 footer is a non-event. So he didn’t even have to be super open.
It will be interesting to see what Brogdon has left after two injury-riddled seasons putting up spotty numbers on shitty teams. There are also some questions about his fit in the locker room, although it’s hard to read too much into that stuff.
Honestly, when things shake out, I think it’s going to be more Clarkson and Deuce and less Brogdon…unless Brogdon both stays healthy and shows out on the defensive end. Brown is preaching uptempo and Brogdon seems more like a slow-it-down type.
“Having a 6’7” player try to close in and meanigfully contest a catch and shoot 7 footer is a non-event.”
I don’t agree with this because KAT does not have a particularly high release point and a long-armed wing glued to him beyond the arc makes both the catch and the shot difficult.
Part of the problem is that KAT has a relatively low release that doesn’t take full advantage of his height, so he can’t necessarily get it off against shorter defenders.
I think the issue with KAT shooting from the corners is that he’s slow and getting back on defense is easier when he’s at the top of the key… not sure if he’s a good enough deterrent to want him back over OG, but it’s also very difficult to find anyone who shoots the % he does from above the break.
Brogdon put up his usually stats last season EXCEPT his 3pt shooting. He’s an insanely good shooter, so I expect he’ll be back to normal unless the injury is permanent or lingering for an awfully long time.
With Deuce the question is whether he’s closer to the 2023-24 version or the 2024-25 version. The main problem was shooting .455 inside the arc compared to .510 the year before. He was sub-.500 at the rim.
long-armed wing glued to him beyond the arc makes both the catch and the shot difficult.
Hear you. I wasn’t saying glued to him but the usual two step close and contest situations.
Also, sprinting to corners on misses after contesting guys like KP and Evans.
There were many times where Hart pushed after rebounding and KAT was just standing above the break on the left side of the floor instead of running to the corner. It’s an impossible pass for Hart to make unless he gets to the left corner where he can actually receive the ball and shoot a higher percentage shot.
I mean, sure, KAT should be taking more catch and shoot 3’s. And if we start Mitch and play them together more, he will.
The key is to keep opposing C’s glued to Mitch, who will absolutely destroy non-C’s on the offensive glass. KAT should be playing 15-20 mpg as a PF with Mitch and the rest at C in a 5-out lineup. In fact, having a Mitch-KAT-Hart trio could work as well because The C on Hart thing is disrupted.
As much as it pains me to say this, I like “the idea” of Brogdon enough to think trading Kolek or Dadiet makes some sense. I’m not sure which I’d prefer trading, but if they still believe in Dadiet, I’d rather keep him because Brogdon is probably going to play ahead of Kolek anyway. The key is his health. At least we’ll get to see all of them some more before a decision has to be made.
“Also, sprinting to corners on misses after contesting guys like KP and Evans.”
who is evans the last player with that surname was jacob but even then his last season was five years ago
Got bored while waiting for a client to upload something into our portal, so I decided to look at Brogdon’s career stats again. Is it too late to change my mind on trading Kolek? Sheesh!
We worry about Mitch staying upright, and rightfully so. But Brogdon’s injury history isn’t any better. I honestly trust Mitch to stay healthy more than Brogdon. Brogdon only played more than 65 games twice- 75 games(28 starts) in his rookie year, one 67 games off the bench for Boston in 22-23. It’s easy to say he won’t be asked to do much, but his game is the type that we will need on this team. So we will lean on him when he’s healthy. Theoretically, how do we keep him healthy when he makes the team?
I wonder what Brogdon is expecting in terms of role. He’s never averaged less than 23 mpg and that was last year on a tanking team. In every other year he’s averaged at least 26 mpg.
If he stays healthy, there’s gpnna be a ton of pressure on Deuce to produce. And given that Deuce is in a contract year and could easily be offered something in the $8-12M AAV range. The dude is uniquely lovable but he absolutely has to play better on both ends to justify keeping him past the deadline.
“who is evans”
I’m guessing he meant Evan Mobley…
On the KP note, I’m wondering how the Hawks will gel this season. They have a clunky roster…but I could see them having a shot at being a top 4-5 seed in the East and a tough playoff out if everything goes right (e.g. KP and JJ stay healthy, Daniels and Risacher continue to develop, etc.
Just checking around the league…I totally forgot that the Lakers picked up De’Andre Ayton and Marcus Smart. They could be very interesting. But so can lots of teams out west…Minny, Dallas, Denver, and San Antonio. Obviously OKC is still the favorite to make the finals and Houston is the team to watch, but there’s gonna be some dogfights out there!

“who is evans”
lol…my bad. I was thinking of Myles Turner.
It was frustrating to see KAT run to the left break and stop…zero chance for Brunson, Hart or Bridges to make that over shoulder pass when they’re attacking the rim on the right side before the defense is fully set. First runner must fill the opposite corner. If the ball comes back out…they can always reset and shuffle KAT back above the break if they’re concerned with transition defense.
hello geo i am actually on my laptop and phone quite a bit on weekends especially on sunday mornings prepping for fantasy football i check in on the blog and not much is usually going on in the offseason that warrants me commenting i like baseball but do not know the stats or have the interest that many of you do so there is not much for me to say on that front as far as nabers my attention is not by any means only for my fantasy team caring about nabers himself and the impact to his life and career are not mutually exclusive with it

Facts Zman…I would put the degree of difficulty of winning the West this year to be near par with winning back to back titles.
Wonder if there is any data on Finals results when the better team is exhausted due to the rigourous path vs a less talented rested team.

There is data, and it’s not a thing.
The closest is Draymond picking up a bunch of flagrants and getting suspended for reaching his quota in the 2016 finals. That wasn’t exhaustion, though, and Draymond is always a special case (both great and terrible).

The only long term consequence will be that when Dabol speaks to Mara after the season he will say, “Jeez John, if Nabors didn’t get injured we wouldn’t have exposed Dart to the pummeling he took and we would have been at least 9-8 rather than the 5-12 we finished.”
1 Buddy Hield 58.5%
2 Garrison Matthews 57.1%
3 Taurean Prince 50.6%
4 Karl-Anthony Towns 47.0%

At least we’ll get to see all of them some more before a decision has to be made.

who is evans the last player with that surname was jacob but even then his last season was five years ago
Obviously OKC is still the favorite to make the finals and Houston is the team to watch, but there’s gonna be some dogfights out there!
howdy mister doogie…what else is there but to get personal…ya’ll (not copying donnie, i was cool with this kinda chatter first) just way more interesting…
been wondering what is up with your device discipline these days, in particular staying off the site on weekends…did someone make you do it, or was it something you decided on your own?
is it helping? like increasing QOL and stuff?
how did you accomplish this thing?
was gonna be my usual self and chide you for being more concerned for your “fantasy” whatever than that young person’s knee…wanna be nice to you though and find out how you’re kicking butt with your device discipline on the weekends…
feed me the poop (info) already please…
Wonder if there is any data on Finals results when the better team is exhausted due to the rigourous path vs a less talented rested team.
probably exists somewhere
It’s a special kind of hell to be a jet fan
I haven’t listened yet but the Sunc’d on podcast just posted a Knicks season preview as a free episode. The guest on the the show is James L. Edward’s.
It was awfully fun in the late 60’s.
Knicks too. But Jets have been worse in my lifetime.
i was born in 64…when i was 4 or 5….some relative or maybe my parents got me a joe namath faux uniform pajamas (even had the enclosed feet on’em) and that was that…how was I to know that my pro football fandom was cursed forever…
There is data, and it’s not a thing.
The closest is Draymond picking up a bunch of flagrants and getting suspended for reaching his quota in the 2016 finals. That wasn’t exhaustion, though, and Draymond is always a special case (both great and terrible).
