The tough thing about the NFL being so QB centric is that if they draft a good OL and then win say 9 or 10 games they’re just stuck next year with no QB and they’re drafing too low to have a chance at one of the better prospects

Certainly true. But I never got the sense Jaxson Dart is some excellent prospect. He seems like the kind of dude that’s available every single year outside the top 20 picks.

They seem to be betting heavily on the fact that he’s highly compatible with Daboll, and that’s what made taking him worth it. (Or maybe Mara just told them they needed to draft a QB.)

I’m mostly concerned with the following plausible scenario: the Giants get overwhelmed by their tough early schedule, have a terrible year, Mara fires the GM & coach, and now you have a new regime that doesn’t like Dart as much as the previous regime. In that case they’ll have wasted three quality draft picks.

I’m not in love with Schoen & Daboll, but I think they deserve to be judged on process vs wins. They have pivoted quite well from the Daniel Jones error and are getting a lot of good pieces in the door. I’m legitimately excited to watch this defense.

giants dont seem to be generating a lot of excitement here if everything breaks great maybe they can go 8-9 which would be stellar

I think Mara forced Shoen to make the Dart move. Sub-cromulent. Could have got O linemen and with this years schedule be in position to draft their future # 1 QB from this year’s class.

I swear today is the absolute weirdest day to take a trip to NY. But my lady and her little cousin have birthdays near each other and they wanted NY..sooooo..here we are at an Air BnB in Bayonne for a few days *rolls eyes*

This happens constantly to my team, the Raiders. Old regime drafts a weird pet player with the #1 pick (or other picks) then the player(s) underwhelm, the regime gets fired, and the new regime rightfully moves on from the weird/bad picks made by the old regime.

Pete Carroll is running the team now, and brings some competence to the job, but he’s the oldest coach in NFL history so by definition he’s not going to be around long. We’ll probably be doing this same thing again 2-3 years from now. The only thing that stays constant with the Raiders is Mark Davis using a Flowbee to cut his own hair.

I think Mara forced Shoen to make the Dart move. Sub-cromulent. Could have got O linemen and with this years schedule be in position to draft their future # 1 QB from this year’s class.

My thoughts, as well. In addition to the Dolphin guard who looks really good, there was a run on linemen with the 3rd round pick we gave up in the Dart deal, too. (JK’s Raiders got a tackle with our 99th pick, and I’m curious if he has any thoughts on Charles Grant.)

Seems like we really could have done a lot to transform our line in this draft. Not to mention we gave up a third round pick next year, too. If Dart is not a good starting QB, this was an opportunity cost they’ll likely never recover from. But of course if he’s good, well, we can always draft linemen next year.

It’s just really hard to shake the concern that they took Dart bc Mara demanded a QB, not because they liked Dart more than the linemen available.

Knicks likely to sign Mohamed Diawara to two-way deal

Interesting. That means they’re confident they can clear cap room or they’d rather have Nnaji in a roster slot than Diawara.

Charles Grant is what people refer to as a “project” which is a euphemism for “likely bust.” Small school guy, has looked nothing like an NFL player so far but tackles can take a little while to develop so (insert shrug emoticon). He’s low on the depth chart and the Raiders just extended their incumbent LT Kolton Miller for three years.

It was a mixed bag of a draft for the Raiders this year under the new regime. I don’t like the Ashton Jeanty pick, and I didn’t love the picks of Jack Bech (slow possession-type WR taken in second round) and Grant.

The picks that I did like were Darien Porter, a prototypical big Pete Carroll-style CB, and Dont’e Thornton, an athletic freak WR who should see lots of snaps as a rookie. Those guys were third and fourth round picks respectively. The Raiders should be able to run an effective ball control offense, as Jeanty is a much better player than what they’ve had at RB even if I wouldn’t have used a 1RP on him, Bowers is a generational TE and Geno Smith is an accurate passer. The offensive line is decent, maybe league average.

The defense is going to be dreadful.

bayonne most definitely aint nyc nyc=good bayonne=bad

We definitely picked a bad location. The place is nice..but we’re finally on our way into the city and it’s such a chore to get there from here

    🙂

i bet you are…tell ya poindexter, gotta trick yourself in to thinking this is what life is…and it’s the good stuff…

boys are back in school…plus of summer break is that we spend a lot more time together and we are all able to get in to more positive cohabitive routines…challenge is that it’s sometimes hard for me to get my own thoughts processed without interruption, or come to joyful terms with the necessity for me to cook, clean, serve others a lot more than normal…

one of the boys is constantly looking towards “what’s next”…generally i try to plan most of life’s activities days in advance, frequently share the plan with the folks around me…still get a bunch of questions, particualry from the kids reference: what’s next…

my recent go to response has been to say: i’m just going moment to moment…it’s really hard for me to do much more…then i restate the next part of the plan…

it’s been working…they’re okay with that response, it settles them…

trying to focus now on maintaining awareness while not indulging in any thought processes, emotions or sensory reactions…hinduism seems to be helping me on this part of the journey…

maybe next step will be in learning to more effectively draw energy and strength from those around me…the answer is there somewhere…

stay safe – so much sensory input, especially with a group of family around – be aware and HAVE FUN poindexter…

    Thanks, geo!

“Interesting. That means they’re confident they can clear cap room or they’d rather have Nnaji in a roster slot than Diawara.“

Yeah. By definition, if you like a “project” better to get him on a 2-way than a roster spot if he is acceptable to it. So good news there. Nnaji makes sense on the roster if they view the slot as just needing a big who can man the paint semi-passably and give us 6 fouls (ie, never see the floor unless a dire emergency in which case we are likely losing the game anyway) while the real development work goes to Diawara with the Westies. Or as you say, Aller is concocting something no one has tried before.

just cuz it’s sunday, oh wait today is monday, oh well…this next session’s prep work was to explore the origin story for the notion(s): don’t need people/people are cumbersome and energy draining/better off alone…

figured it out while trying to be still, basically spent a lot of time alone growing up, moved around a bunch, house ethos was to work hard and take care of yourself…those became core beliefs…current counter is that it is good to serve others, engaging more i can build a stronger support network to help me along, and it is possible to be in a particular moment and feel joy in the parts you do like…

did a bonus one i have to work on: hate telling people what to do…from early 20’s to 40 or so primary work stuff was just that, made me weary at work, as in a near revulsive physical reaction kind of way…however, it’s a necessity even without work, sometimes a responsibility, more importantly it helps prevent worse shit from happening later on…

trying to be a good student with the therapy stuff – so i can get this cycle of headshrinking over with as quickly as possible…do get it now though: no magic pill, no finish line…for those folks who’ve opened themselves up to this kind of health care already, much respect, like aging – not for the weak…

Based on the Athletic article, it’s just something he’s heard discussed and is not impending like Hoopshype suggests. He says “wouldn’t be surprised” which is very noncommittal.

    Thanks Strat,

The article is interesting and Edward’s does say he expects Diawara to get a two way spot but he doesn’t actually address who will get the 14th roster spot after a veteran (maybe Shamet) is hired for the 13th spot. I suspect he didn’t really think about the issue of how to get a first year rookie salary in the last spot.

George Costanza bragging about the parking space he got, only it’s me talking about how we did the two busiest rides at Disneyland this morning with no wait.

36 years ago today, technotronic gave us Pump Up the Jam. God Bless.

Aaaaand now I hate you for bringing that up 😄😄

    Sheeeeesh…time really does fly, huh?

Thought it might inspire a fun soundtrack for your foray into the center of the universe.

    1

My understanding is that it would not make sense for the Knicks to tender an offer to anyone for that last rookie spot until the last possible moment, and probably the same goes for the vet’s minimum spot although less so because you run the risk of losing out on impatient candidates.

Since there isn’t a super-large pool of “viable” candidates for that last rookie roster spot, it seems to make sense to sign guys to 2-way deals before the season starts to buy time for later prorated deals. Unless someone from another team shakes loose, seems like it would likely be one of Diawara, Nnaji, or Pate to get that spot. So unless I’m mistaken, there’s no conflict between Diawara signing a 2-way and being eligible for the rookie spot at a later time…isn’t that what happened with Hukporti?

“only it’s me talking about how we did the two busiest rides at Disneyland this morning with no wait.”

What I’ve heard is that a VIP can jump the line, but for a VIP who would rather remain low-key ,whom they recognise (either by sight or by posts such as knickerbocker.com) they discretely move the people in front of you elsewhere.

Two things taught me patience as a kid: waiting on lines at Disneyland and being a Knicks fan.

I have failed my kids by introducing them to rich friends who get them “front of the line passes” and to the Indiana Pacers.

That’s only one example of patience, seeing as you gave up on the other

The Athletic did a 2024 NBA redraft and wouldn’t you know it, the new top 20 is littered with all the quality players Leon didn’t think were good enough:

    9. Jaylen Wells (taken 39th after Leon traded the 38th pick)

    12. Ajay Mitchell (taken 38th with the Knicks’ pick Leon traded)

    13. Kyshawn George (taken 24th with the Knicks’ pick Leon traded)

    15. Kyle Filipowski (taken 32nd after Leon passed on him twice)

    17. Terrance Shannon Jr (taken 27th after Leon passed on him twice)

    19. Isaiah Collier (taken 29th after Leon passed on him twice)

    20. Ryan Dunn (taken 28th after Leon passed on him twice)

    https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6547791/2025/08/14/nba-draft-2024-stephon-castle-zaccharie-risacher/

Our draft picks from last year haven’t made an impression in the mind of any national reporter. I do think Hukporti was a good find at fifty something, but he’s not good enough to get any national writer’s attention as a draft find. But otherwise, those writers have a point.

    Good enough for what?

Good enough to stop us from acquiring an All-NBA center

EB, why do you like to propagate the idea that using all our draft picks and paying them their full salary would have prevented us from being able to trade for KAT when it’s already been shown to be clearly false?

All we had to do was not sign Precious for $6M and sign a vet min instead. Then we could have had all three of our picks and completed the KAT trade.

We didn’t forego the chance to draft three rotation players for KAT. We did it for Precious.

The really basic reason you seem to be skipping is that Rose just thought Dadiet and Kolek were better than these guys.

All we had to do was not sign Precious for $6M

At the time, Achiuwa was slotted to be our starting center.

Even after acquiring Towns, he played 57 games, which would have been 77 had he not been injured to start the year.

    Player BPM

    Jaylen Wells -2.2
    Ajay Mitchell -1.6
    Kyshawn George -4.1
    Kyle Filipowski -1.0
    Terrence Shannon -2.1
    Isaiah Collier -5.1
    Ryan Dunn -4.1

Some of these guys showed some promise but how many of them are going to be useful?

So what you’re saying, EB, is that you’ve been wrong to continually suggest that we needed to trade out of those picks and get Dadiet’s lower salary slot in order to facilitate the KAT trade. Thank you for clarifying.

Sure, we could have also signed Brunson to a minimum deal or traded OG for a worse less expensive player. There’s a very large number of ways to save money. The FO needs to choose one. This is the one they chose. If they had chosen another one, you’d complain about that one too.

Or maybe they just liked Tyler Kolek, Pacome Dadiet, Hukporti, and McCullar as players and realized they could pickup assets and still get them.

Rookie year (and even second year) BPMs are notoriously poor at predicting if a player will be cromulent in the future. Just look at our own roster for evidence:

    Brunson: -1.7, -0.9
    Hart: -0.1, -1.3
    Anunoby: -0.6, -2.4
    Bridges: -1.6, 0.8
    McBride: -4.5, -2.3

To answer your question, I think Jaylen Wells and Ajay Mitchell would both be very useful right now, i.e. good enough to be in our current 9 man rotation ahead of someone like Jordan Clarkson.

Filipowski, Shannon, and George will likely need another season but could easily follow Deuce-like trajectories.

We needed a pipeline, and we blew a grand chance to draft one.

Just to be clear… what you’re saying, EB, is that you’ve been wrong to continually suggest that using those draft picks and acquiring KAT via trade was an either/or scenario. Thank you for clarifying.

It remains true that if we had paid more money for a second 1st round pick, we would not be able to acquire Towns.

This is a dumb exercise. We have 4 players who played a combined 600 minutes. Several of the players you listed will end up being bad. One season is not enough to evaluate a draft.

It remains true that Leon did not need to trade any of his picks in order to facilitate the KAT trade.

He simply made bad choices and there was no greater good compelling him to do so.

Above all else, the draft remains a crapshoot. Viewing it in hindsight with the criteria that a FO must make the best pick at every slot is absurd.

Nobody expects you to pick the single best stock each year.

Redrafting a year after the draft is fucking pointless. Like, if you redrafted the 2014 draft in the summer of 2015 you’d have Elfrid Payton and Langston Galloway in the top 10 but Jokic would go undrafted. If you redrafted 2017 in 2018 you’d probably end up with Ntilikina over Derrick White, Josh Hart, and Isiah Hartenstein.

    3

We simply made bad choices with all of three our picks. There was no greater good compelling us to do so.

Good to know that Dadiet is worthless. We should trade him now, maybe just cut him.

2013 draft is another good one. MCW would go 1st in a redraft well over Giannis and Gobert.

Bringing back Precious when we needed a big was a perfectly fine choice. But yes, it would always be good if we could draft without ever choosing the wrong players

Hell, just look at the all-rookie teams every year; they’re littered with guys who never amounted to anything while All-NBA players don’t even make the list. In 2019, SGA was all-rookie 2nd team (with Landry Shamet) while Ayton and Bagley were 1st team.

I could be mistaken but I think the driving force behind all those egregious trade downs was getting the money to consummate the Mikal Bridges trade. IIRC Leon couldn’t even hold the line at giving Brooklyn his 5 best first rounders. He also agreed to throw in enough cash to cover Shake Milton’s salary, which compelled him to make all those bad trades in the ’24 draft.

Leon also could not have just signed a vet minimum player and used him to trade for KAT. That is against the trade rules.

Doogie, could you do me a solid and kindly count how many posts EB makes before he can admit he was wrong? Thanks, boo.
