Do you think Leon will make some adjustments now, until the deadline, or do we ride with this team to check how they fare in the playoffs against the other contenders/pretenders?
I think he will do something. Not to great effect though.
It seems like a seller’s market, so probably what Owen said. Nick Richards seemed like a bargain though.
Hot take: Wild at Heart — not Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway or Eraserhead — is my favorite Lynch film. Love the characters in that film like no other in his filmography. Willem Defoe’s bravura performance as the seedy Bobby Peru gives us one of the most underrated villains in cinema history.
Jake Fischer says Mitch may not be back this season at all. So that’s great.
If that’s a possibility then Leon needs to apply for an injury exception immediately
Jake Fisher was simply speculating about scenarios. He did not indicate that he has any inside info to merit that concern. No news there.
I am not a David Lynch fan. His stuff is too weird and dark for me.
Its funny how life is full of small incrimental changes that make the end of things seem like whimpers instead of bangs. Pete Alonso was a fixture of my Mets fandom for years and now it seems that I am placidly ready to let him go without much fanfare or angst. It took a series of minor steps to arrive at that point but here we are. I don’t know if other fans empathize with my attitude towards that shift, but I recognize that life is a lot like that, you know? You realize that there is no singular final moment. Even death, the most final of events, can be understood as the culmination of a lifelong process of aging (and hence dying) a little bit each day.
Sorry for the existential rant this morning, but the thought just illuminated upon me and I felt the need to share it with the group.
If that’s a possibility then Leon needs to apply for an injury exception immediately
The deadline to apply for the disabled player exception was the 15th. Even if we could have applied, the DPE does not subtract salary from your roster or remove luxury tax or apron consequences. Because we’re $500k from a hard cap, the exception is effectively useless to us.
ras, quite a post! Seems like the dying a bit each day theme in the context of losing out on Pete Alonso is in itself a tribute to David Lynch’s world view.

There’s always The Straight Story. It’s been a couple decades since I’ve seen it, but my recollection is that it’s the least Lynchian film in existence despite being directed by David Lynch. Worth watching.
Alonso is coming off two not-so-great years, and I know he’s probably not a very wise investment, but I’m getting kind of concerned about how the Mets are handling what is looking like a gaping hole in their lineup. As of now they don’t have enough bats, and honestly they don’t really look like they have enough arms either.
If they’re basically done shopping and don’t add some more significant pieces, they look like a fringe playoff team, even with the addition of Soto.
I think any action before the deadline is dependent on which way the Knicks want to go long term.
1. If they think Mitch can come back and be healthy and want to take a good look at the Towns/Mitch pairing, then doing nothing major for now makes sense.
2. If they are not confident in Mitch and/or want a backup that can have a similar role to Towns and be able to score and shoot some 3s for when Towns is out, then trading Mitch for Jonas Valanciunas makes some sense.
3. If they have some 3&D+ PF (or other player) in mind to try to pair with Towns in the off season, keeping Mitch as a trade asset make some sense.
A lot depends on what they think of Mitch, what they can get for Sims, what they think Hukporti’s prospects are for next year and stuff like that.
The horizons on Mitch have been receding for some time now. I don’t expect to see him healthy and on the court any time this season, or really ever again.
3. If they have some 3&D+ PF (or other player) in mind to try to pair with Towns in the off season, keeping Mitch as a trade asset make some sense.
I still don’t know who you think fits this description.
My caveat is that I absolutely loved The Elephant Man. Literally one of my favorite movies ever. So there’s that.
OTOH I watched Mulholland Drive to find out why some “respected” folks here loved it. Wish I could get that 2 hours of my life back.
JK, with the Dodgers inking Sasaki and Tanner Scott, Uncle Steve’s sudden budget limits seem rational. How can any NL team hope to beat the Dodgers with their starting pitching and everyday lineup. That said, when Alonso pivoted to a 3 year deal, I thought the prudent thing to do was to overpay Pete on an AAV basis. Soto is going to walk alot this upcoming season.
Assuming we don’t bring back Pete, I would think they move Vientos to 1st, re-sign Iglesias, hope for a bounce back year from McNeil, and hope either Baty or Acuna can step in if needed.
We were all worried about our starting pitching last year and they ended up being pretty great. We’re bringing back Manaea and Peterson and should get a full year from Senga. We just need two of Montas/Blackburn/Canning to not be a total disaster as the 4/5 starters. We also added Clay Holmes and AJ Minter and with Edwin Diaz another year removed from his injury our bullpen should be pretty great.
“If they’re basically done shopping and don’t add some more significant pieces, they look like a fringe playoff team, even with the addition of Soto.”
I dunno, seems to me like they took the team that played the best baseball in MLB for 3+ months and added Soto and subtracted Alonso. They might have lost more ground on the Dodgers, but who didn’t?
Seems like their biggest loss is Severino, but Senga should mostly make up for that. If you move Vientos to first and promote Luisangel Acuna and/or Mauricio, seems like they shouldn’t miss Alonso and his ice-cold streaks all that much. That is doubly true if McNeil can bounce back.
Bregman seems like the only real difference-maker out there, but he seems poised to go to the Sox. Beyond that whatayagonnado?
Holmes is going to start, and maybe that works out, maybe it doesn’t.
The Mets and Cohen have the resources to be a playoff lock every year, and they seem to be pinching some pennies just at the wrong spot of the win curve. The goal shouldn’t be “beat the Dodgers this year,” it should be “‘make the playoffs every year.”
As it stands right now, they’re a fringe playoff team, not a lock. They’re $40M or so below their payroll from last season and it looks like they’re set to enter the season with at least one gaping hole.
I still don’t know who you think fits this description.
You never know who will be available and who we’d be willing to trade.
Maybe someone we view as untouchable right now is not.
imo the most obvious candidate is Jonathan Isaac. He’s having a down year from 3. That could make him available. I am more than willing to overlook some volatility from 3 to get everything else he brings to the table and hope his shot returns to the mean. He’ll be making 15m next year and seems reasonably healthy now.
It’s not perfect because of the injury history. Who knows if he could stand up to 25-30 minutes per night or even worse the Thibs treatment, but we have limited assets.
And Nick Richards (of Kentucky) scored a totally useless 21 points (7-of-8 from the field and 7-of-9 from the line) and pulled down 11 rebounds in a totally useless debut for the Suns in 29 minutes off the bench last night.
And Okongwu had 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks on 6-of-shooting (2-of-3 from 3) in 32 minutes off the bench for the Hawks last night.
Isaac would be an interesting piece, as he is on a reasonable contract and is having a bit of a down year. Not sure what you really give Orlando that they would be interested in, however.
Adem Bona with 12 and 6 on 5-of-5 shooting in 19 minutes off the bench for the Sixers last night.
Thomas Bryant with 12 and 6 on 5-of-7 shooting in 20 minutes off the bench for the Pacers last night.
Seems like the dying a bit each day theme in the context of losing out on Pete Alonso is in itself a tribute to David Lynch’s world view.
Yep. Lost Highway might be for you, dude.
“There’s a time to live and a time to die
When it’s time to meet the maker

That’s fucking deep, man. I am checking this song out.
They’re $40M or so below their payroll from last season and it looks like they’re set to enter the season with at least one gaping hole
I like Pete, but he was essentially a 2-ish WAR player last season. That can be replaced fairly easily with intelligent FO moves. There’s plenty of talent left out there, I think we need to wait to see what’s what.
The true headscratcher re: Okongwu is why the Hawks are still starting Capela over him.
would be very very hard to trade for isaac now bc he is still on his old deal at $25mm this year. a fun fact is that a 3 way trade i would definitely not make that sends isaac here, cj mccollum to orlando, and mitch, precious, garry harris and deuce to the pels, fails on our end by the price of a toyota camry.
I saw Wild At Heart a on the big screen at the Coolidge in Boston a couple years back with a friend with benefits. I think also his boyfriend and my husband. We liked each other well enough before the movie and it was the first time I had dated a “cinephile” in my adult life. Hubby took me off the market before the dating apps changed reality forever. For the better i think. Now we can discuss the important things before tangling toes. Scouting reports are essential for good sex. Our burgeoning relationship ended immediately after. I don’t like to tell people to shut the fuck up in a public theatre because it’s not my living room but I sometimes feel it. Unless they’re like really clever and saying out loud what needs to be said. But lynch didn’t really need person x making sure everyone else in the theater knew they were his biggest fan or that they knew every fucking word of what is definitely not Lynchs best work (sorry to disagree, Ras). Mulholland Drive is as good as it gets.
But lynch didn’t really need person x making sure everyone else in the theater knew they were his biggest fan or that they knew every fucking word of what is definitely not Lynchs best work
It seems the esoteric nature of Lynch’s work attracted this particularly annoying type of cinephile: the Know-it-All who is convinced they’ve figured out the secret subtext and has to share how clever they are with the world for it. Ironically, it was exactly this type of impulse which Lynch rejected whenever discussing his work. Guy always left his work open to multiple meanings and interpretations. I always felt he wanted moviegoers to figure out what his art could mean for themselves in ways that were unique to each individual. It’s what makes his work so fascinating and frustrating at the same time.
And, yeah, I am not going to say Wild at Heart was Lynch’s magnum opus because it probably isn’t even Top 3 in his filmography. But it is my personal favorite.
I hear that. I love the movie myself.
they seem to be pinching some pennies just at the wrong spot of the win curve.
Doesn’t look that way to me. You guys opened up a ten year window. Alonso really only helps you this year, then he probably becomes a burden. Steve’s probably gearing up to add Vlad Guerrero Jr next year and thinks it’s better to have room for that move even if it costs you a little bit now, and I think that’s wise. In fact that’s the kind of long term thinking that Leon continually fails to operate with. (Leon is actually a lot like Thibs; the way Thibs only thinks of the current game, Leon only thinks of the current season.)
I dunno, I guess the plot of Mulholland Drive can fairly said to be a bit esoteric and to therefore have drawn its fair share of know-it-alls and I-can-see-things-you-can’t-sees … but it terms of themes and what the film is “about” it seems pretty straightforward.
It’s about the nature of dreams and ambitions in modern America first and foremost and, secondly, about love and attraction.
Hits both of them out of the stadium to this film observer’s eyes. The “This is the girl” sequence is arguably my favorite sequence in film history.
Appreciate the meditation, Ras.
And so, from hour to hour, we ripe and ripe,
And then, from hour to hour, we rot and rot
David Stearns has been frighteningly competent in his tenure so far, so I assume there will be some sort of suitable Plan B to replace Alonso’s bat. As I mentioned earlier, they’re still $40M south of their payroll number from last year, when they weren’t even expected to contend. They could do an awful lot of things with $40M given the available players who are still on the market.
The true headscratcher re: Okongwu is why the Hawks are still starting Capela over him.
I suspect because Capela is the incumbent but he may still be better on the defensive side than Okongwu.
You never know who will be available and who we’d be willing to trade.
Maybe someone we view as untouchable right now is not.
That’s fair. I do love the idea of Isaac and it’s not as if they need more defense. They don’t need all of Carter, Bitadze, Isaac, and Paolo, but with Carter & Isaac’s injury histories they might keep both as long as possible.
Theoretically, we could use Carter and slide KAT to the 4 too.
TJ Warren sat out last night for Westchester, I’m not sure why. Nobody of interest played.
I’m a big Mulholland Drive fan, love that movie. Very sad to see Lynch go.
Soto is going to walk alot this upcoming season.
He walked 129 times last year and only two intentional with Judge batting behind him. Look for that to rise for sure.
Anyone think Jay Huff from the Grizz is worth a sniff? Cheap 4 year contract, shoots a lot and well from 3, can block an occasional shot, seems to be becoming an NBA player like I Hart was 3 years ago.
I like Jay Huff, but I think the Grizz may like him more than I do.
He’d probably be a positive on his own, but we might have to lose more than he’s worth to get him.
“Anyone think Jay Huff from the Grizz is worth a sniff? Cheap 4 year contract, shoots a lot and well from 3, can block an occasional shot, seems to be becoming an NBA player like I Hart was 3 years ago.”
Obviously I like him as a player, as I mentioned him at least once or twice about a month ago. But I have zero interest—less than zero, actually—in sniffing him.
I’m not sure how Hal and Cohen can justify their lack of spending seeing what the Dodgers are doing. Of course I say lack of spending compared to the Dodgers, unlike most Yankee fans I don’t consider Hal cheap.
But at least the Yankees are in the AL which seems like is in the middle of a period of mediocrity so the Yankees go into this season as heavy favorites to win the pennant again and even without Soto should win more than the 94 games they did last year. But if they really wanted to get a pure stranglehold on the AL they could’ve made a play for another top flight reliever and acquired another big bat for the infield.
Mets I dunno man not sure what they’re doing after signing Soto. You can say they have him for 15 years so they have a huge window but shit the Dodgers window will be open for just as long with the way they’re operating right now.
Also to add to ras talking about how easily he’s moved on from Alonso, I justify moving on from players by maintaining that I’m a fan of the front of my team’s jersey not the back.
Now it’s been easier to do so as a Yankees fan because they’re basically always good so while I was super pissed about losing Soto whatever we still have Judge and they’ll be other superstars that will eventually join the team. Being a Knicks fan has been much more difficult, when Ewing got traded it was really hard for me but we still had Houston, Spree and the rest of the 1999-2000 core so it made it a bit easier to move on plus obviously Ewing was at the end of his career.
Moving on from Eli Manning however has been alot harder than I anticipated….
Pete Alonso blah blah blah. Can we talk about AJ Brown instead? 🙂
Obviously I like him as a player, as I mentioned him at least once or twice about a month ago. But I have zero interest—less than zero, actually—in sniffing him.

fig·ure of speech
noun
noun: figure of speech; plural noun: figures of speech
a word or phrase used in a non-literal sense for rhetorical or vivid effect.
Yes, I know. That’s why my saying that was a joke. It wasn’t a good joke, or a particularly funny one, but somehow it was still better than some of the other things that attempt to pass as jokes around here (e.g., ignorantly and idiotically spelling players’ names incorrectly on purpose, even full well knowing the correct way to spell those names).
And now back to basketball: Yes, I mentioned Jay Huff’s talent and apparent ascendance a couple of times quite a while back, so I think that he’s a good player, as well. On that we agree.
Saquon Barkley is an elite talent, not RJ Barrett
Jay Huff would be great and he isn’t in the rotation for Memphis when everyone is healthy but Eddy misses a good amount of time and Memphis is trying to win this year. I see no reason that they would give up am important, young, cheap depth piece for anything we can offer, even if he is 3rd string.
The player that makes a lot of sense to me is Theis. The Pelicans are not salvaging this season so moving him for someone like Sims and a couple 2nds makes sense for them and he would do a lot for our center depth.
Eddy Curry
Yeah, I mentioned Theis quite a while back, too. Original thoughts, etc., etc.
Theis has been mentioned before but he isn’t starting and now that New Orleans’ season is pretty much over he should be available.
I sorta like Theis, but I don’t see him helping the Knicks. He can’t shoot the three, and he’s only 6’8″. He’s basically an old Precious, with admittedly better footwork in the post, but at 6’8″ so what.
I see no reason that they would give up am important, young, cheap depth piece
Huff is 26. He’s a newer name, but I wouldn’t consider him young. Otherwise, you’re right he’s not going anywhere. He’s locked up for another 3 years on basically a minimum deal.
“Theis has been mentioned before but he isn’t starting and now that New Orleans’ season is pretty much over he should be available.”
All correct. Which is why I mentioned him before. 🙂
Maybe the Pellies’ season isn’t over now, since Zion is back and thinner and playing well. Ha ha. Who am I kidding?
Jay Huff at 26 and 7’1″ at least makes sense, even if he’s un-gettable. Theis is like recycling The Year of Bobbie Portis. Let’s stockpile too many mediocre power forwards!
I bet we can get Marcus Morris, too. He’s 6’8″ and washed. Checks both boxes.
Is Kel’el Ware some kind of superhero sent from Kryptom to save the Heat?
What a game!
Miami got 73 points out of their bench. The Anti-Knicks.
We complain plenty about NBA refs here, but penalties now dictate NFL games to such a degree that I’ve totally lost interest.
Okey-doke.
i’ve always thought of the second round of the nfl playoffs as the best football weekend of their season…
should be two excellent games next week…
Ded.
I totally get why the Giants didn’t want to pay Saquon but god damn, man. That guy is so fucking good and it really sucks he’s an Eagle.

I suspect because Capela is the incumbent but he may still be better on the defensive side than Okongwu.

fig·ure of speech
noun
noun: figure of speech; plural noun: figures of speech
a word or phrase used in a non-literal sense for rhetorical or vivid effect.
