I keep getting these posts on social media (which I really need to just quit) that say the Knicks let Hartenstein walk; that they gave up on him; or even “one team’s trash is another team’s treasure.” It may even be intentional engagement bait, but it still pisses me off.

I like to think I have a good handle on the burrs that will cling to the Knickerblogger pant leg but the retconning of IHart is completely baffling to me. He didn’t want to sign a three year deal when he came here. He outplayed what we could pay him. That’s kind of it.

So, many months ago I made plans for tonight to take my lovely wife to dinner and then to the Metropolitan Opera to see Aida as part of her annual birthday celebration. To make matters worse, a buddy offered me great seats to the game a week ago, and I had to pull the old line from Good Will Hunting…Sorry man, I gotta go see about a girl…..

At least I know for sure that I’m going to see a tragedy….

Hopefully the rest of us won’t be seeing a tragedy, as well. I want my girlfriend to see that we can indeed beat more than the bottom feeders of the league. I’m hoping that those Thunder aren’t too pissed off about the loss of their nice losing streak.

Who exactly are you asking that to? This is an entire forum, and often has hundreds or more people logged on at any given time. Are you asking everyone?

Personally, I’m pretty sure that I didn’t see Heathers, and it would be astoundingly low on my list of things that I’d want to see. If I did see it (or maybe even any portion of it), it didn’t make any impression on me and I’m ashamed of myself for having taken the time. But truly, I’m almost positive that I’ve never seen even a second of it.

It’s pretty good. Still holds up.

I think that Winona Ryder is horrible as an actress, and has actually gotten worse at it as she’s gotten older. She’s almost unwatchable in recent roles. It’s too bad that she’s part of the Tribe.

One thing conveniently left out of today’s “discussion” was that Brunson, KAT, and Bridges never played an NBA basketball game together before this year, OG only joined the team last year and was injured more than not, and Mitch has yet to suit up.

Meanwhile, Cleveland’s core of Mitchell, Garland, Mobley and Allen, plus core rotation players Okoro and Wade, are together for their 4th year, and rotation players Levert and Merrill have been there for the last 3. Their big additions have been Strus and Niang.

Maybe folks should give us some more time to gel and for Leon to find some Niang- or Strus-level players before we pass final judgment.

BTW, who are CLE’s backup bigs behind Mobley and Allen? Only asking because their starting guards are somewhat diminutive.

So how important will seeding be going into this year’s playoffs? I, for one, am very concerned about facing the Celts in round 2, and much, much less so about the Cavs. Thoughts? (If you can tear yourselves away from the scintillating back-and-forth above)

I can easily tear myself away from that crap.

I think that we’ve been assigning too much importance to seeding under Thibs (Exhibit A: that last-day-of-season OT game against the Bulls just to get win #50 last season). Maybe we ought to do like other good teams do and stop focusing on it so much. But we have the same coach. So we won’t.

I definitely do not believe that we should play any differently at the end of the season to either draw a certain opponent, or to avoid one. We should be able to beat whoever is in front of us, and if we don’t believe that we can, then we won’t.

One thing I’ve been quite impressed by is just how much bigger KAT seems to be than opposing players — he just seems to gobble rebounds well above everyone else’s heads. I haven’t been tracking how big the opposing center actually is, and it may just be that a lot of teams go small these days, but it’s as much a visual thing as much as the stat of him leading the league in rebounds.

Assuming Mitch comes back and is more or less okay, and not traded, I’m really curious to see how Thibs plays with lineups to find something that works with someone who plays even larger (but simpler). The specter of Gobert looms, but I’d imagine Mitch would partly just sub for KAT and play 20 minutes or so max. Even so, how the team can find a ‘fit’ with a non-floor-spreader should be interesting.

KAT is great at keeping the ball above his head on defensive rebounds and throwing passes from up there. Seems like a simple thing but a lot of bigs bring the ball down and get stripped.

As to Mitch’s return, I noticed that Thibs is playing KAT and Precious together for a shift here and there, my guess is that’s a precursor of things to come. I think a healthy Mitch will make a major difference in how we match up with the best teams. Last night I posted a highlight reel from Game 5 vs the Cavs two years ago, and you could see how he just manhandled Allen and Mobley.

It’s early to be talking about seeding. As it stands right now, I didn’t feel good about either team. If Mitch is back and effective, then yes, I’d like the Cavs. But really, we would then match up pretty well with both. Which I’m sure was the intention with the KAT and Bridges trades. We don’t look great yet, but there’s a lot of season left to play.

Also, the chance that Porzingis gets hurt seems high, and if that is the case then I might prefer the Celtics either way.

I also think KAT’s timing on blocks is showing some improvement. Could be just wishful thinking, but that one that was originally called a goaltend and was overturned, along with some others, seemed different than what I observed earlier in the season.

And that, gentlemen, is an example of the plus side of having Thibs as our coach.

Cleveland has emerged as a title threat not because of “gelling,” but largely because they have two young players with very high ceilings who have made a leap. Mobley and Garland are now both 4+ BPM players. We don’t have players like that who are going to provide a big boost due to age-related improvement.

I mean, maybe SOME of it is due to these guys playing together for a few years now, but I wouldn’t expect to see the same kind of leap from the Knicks. All of our guys are already at or near their peaks of production.

Top 3 seeds in the East aren’t changing so get ready for a Knicks Celtics 2nd rd matchup.

The big difference between the Cavs and Celts for me (other than the obvious playoff experience factor) is the size of the Celts’ backcourt and 2-way versatility of their forwards. They have 4 guys to throw at Brunson 1-on-1 with decent rim protection behind them.

Whereas Brunson should be able to do more damage vs. Spida and Darius, both of whom are smallish, especially with KAT and Mitch crashing, OG and Mikal spotting up, and/or Hart slashing and crashing.

OG Anunoby is on pace to play around 3000 minutes this season. His previous high in minutes in a season is 2386.

I think we would be underdogs against either and “Thibs gonna Thibs” anyway so the point is moot. Cleveland is looking like the better team at this point, but I just want to finish in the top 4 and have homecourt in the first round. After that let the chips fall where they may.

LACCD has ordered classes and employees at all 9 schools to operate remotely.

We’ve been mindful to scale back on time spent outdoors. We’ll see how that works out with the little one since he’s home today (he’ll be 2 on the 27th, btw).

The Cavs ran off a 23-5 stretch going into the all-star break last year. I don’t see that much difference between this team and that team, except that Darius Garland is currently shooting 50-43-92…is that sustainable? Mobley is shooting 41% from 3, is that sustainable? Caris LeVert is shooting 45% from 3 (career 34.7%), is that sustainable? Isaac Okoro is shooting 45% from 3 (career 35.6%), is that sustainable? Ty Jerome is shooting 41% from 3 (career 36.3%), is that sustainable?

It should also be noted that as a head coach, Kenny Atkinson has a career postseason record of 1-4. He had one winning season, and was fired the year after when his team started out 28-34.

This is not to say that Cleveland’s record is a mirage or that they will fail in the playoffs…only that I have many more reasons to question them than the Celts.

I can get behind this. To me, this is Year 1 of this group’s title contention window (I remember someone saying they felt this is year 1.5 which in a way I understand). While I think this team is close to their “final form”, I believe there’s still a good deal of information to be gathered.

Among other questions, there’s two that stick out in my mind:
1. Can Mitch get back on the court with enough time before the trade deadline to give the team a good look at his defensive impact with this group?
2. Can the Knicks develop any of their rookies (my money is on Kolek) to flash as dependable bench depth by late in the season? My belief is they just need one of them to do so.

I look forward to neither California nor the Bronx burning anymore. My Dad lived on Rochambeau Avenue in his youth, about 75 years ago.

We’re okay down here in the LBC, Diggy. So far at least. Our old neighborhood in Pasadena near the Altadena city line has all burnt down. The house we lived in has survived so far but three blocks north of there everything is gone.

When we bought this place in Long Beach, moving far away from any kind of fire zone was a high priority for us. Sadly those concerns turned out to be well founded.

Psychologically, it might be better for the team to make the ECF by avoiding the Celts and Cavs until the ECF but materially, losing to either of them in the second round is no different than us beating a lesser team in the second round. The advantage of getting the 2 seed is we avoid one of them until the ECF but it would not mean we’re closer to a title if we ended up losing to either in the ECF than in the 2nd round.

So I think fuck it. Worry about health and not too much about seeding. I think the 3 seed is most likely ours to lose even if we rest some guys here and there.

There’s a chance one of them will lose in the first or second round anyways.

In other words, Thibs lighten up! And Leon, get some help (without trading away the last of our assets for a rental).

I’ve seen enough of this team sans-Mitch to realize its limitations. I keep calling it our thermal exhaust port: we’re small and we can’t defend well.

A healthy Mitch could change everything. But maximizing player health has been an unequivocal organizational failure.

I want to see the Knicks look at it like “how do we get Mitch back to optimum health over the next two seasons,” instead of “how do we get Mitch on the court in the playoffs” (which is what we did last year with both Mitch and Randle, and it cost us dearly).

Someone in this organization needs to zoom out and say “this might not be our year, but if we get this guy healthy, next year could be”.

I treat Doogie like a human being so he tends to cut me some slack. Just yesterday, for example, I referred to the Cavs top 4 as Mitchell, Garland, Allan, and Mobley, and he did not interject to say “who is Allan? There are no Allans on Cleveland! Do you mean Edgar Allan Poe? He’s dead!!”

Mitch was gimpy AF last year when he came back and his conditioning was noticeably poor but we played him anyway.

I hear ya, but I truly do believe that is what they’re doing and that is why the timeline for Mitch’s return has been pushed back. And we had the recent Thibs quote about Mitch being “lean” which I think is promising.

Mitch was a super skinny dude when he first came into the league. He had mad hops but got pushed around easily. One of the things I think really turned him into such a force was how he got bigger and stronger, especially once Thibs got here, but he lost some of that spring and I think the extra weight took it’s tool on his body. So I’m guessing they want a happy medium between early day Mitch and the Mitch of the last few seasons.

And not for nothing…I’ve said this before. But I think the NBA is partly to blame for Mitch’s reinjury. He did look gimpy. we had no back up center when he went down (beyond Precious) and the team DID file for an injury exception and was denied. That exception would have allowed them to find another big for the roster and Mitch would not have come back.

You can argue well they should have not brought him back anyways, and you might be right. But fact is Leon DID want him to not come back, otherwise he would not have filed for the injury exception.

The medical shit is very tough to evaluate because we don’t see any of it aside from random mitch in the gym instagram stories.

There’s a part of me that fears Leon has a bad Mitch trade lined up already and is going to pull the trigger as soon as the counterparty sees Mitch on the court.

Generally when we see rumors Leon is going to trade a guy, that guy gets traded. And we saw some pretty specific Mitch rumors this summer.

Cleanse thy mind of the stupid discourse of the past few days with this truly excellent piece from Neil Paine.

In one fell swoop he discusses the, uh, minutes thing, the ways teams are guarding the Brunson/KAT PNR that have led to its effectiveness dropping, the larger strengths and flaws of the roster in general, and potential solutions to our various woes.

I don’t want to give too much away because, well, the article is free anyway, and you should read it. But I think we can all agree with the conclusion:

All of this might sound like we’re down on the Knicks, or being unnecessarily harsh on a team that has a legitimate chance to win the title. But in many ways, New York’s problems would be the envy of other teams. They have a core with two high-scoring stars and a supporting cast of starters that can fit into multiple roles. Perhaps recognizing this, Thibodeau and the Knicks have leaned heavily on what came most naturally for that group right away.

But winning in the NBA is about more than talent or even money plays; it’s also about who can adapt and then counter-adapt from there. The rest of the league is beginning to figure out what New York does best, and the regular season isn’t even halfway over yet. It’s what the Knicks do from here that will determine whether they have the adaptability to finally cash in on their championship potential — or if this will be just another season of promise that goes unfulfilled in the Big Apple.

Definitely a good article and worth a read but it doesn’t discuss incinerated draft picks at all.

Of all the possible outcomes with Mitch, him returning to 2023 form to dominate Mobley/Allen again looks least likely of all.

Most likely: He is done as a regular player and will never be able to stay healthy long enough to play himself into shape. The track record for recurring injuries to the same body part where the player is out for longer and longer every time is pretty bad. This is probably gonna be similar to late stage Allan Houston or Amare.

Next most likely is we get him on the court for a hot minute and pull the trigger on a not great trade, as Hubie suggested. It’s pretty much impossible for us to get a return that would be as valuable as 2023 Mitch.

It’s a shame because 2023 Mitch would absolutely move the needle by shoring up all of our biggest weaknesses. Right now we have the choice to play 5-out or be absolutely terrible. With Mitch we’d have a credible 4-out lineup that matches up decently with CLE or Chet-less OKC while enabling us to move Hart or Bridges to the bench. Hart/Bridges + Deuce + Precious on the bench would give us an entirely legit top 8 and it’s credible to think that Landree Chalamee or Payne could fill in any remaining gaps.

KAT and Deuce are questionable to play again, so…….not great.

KAT has tendinitis of the patellar tendon in his knee. That’s a repetitive stress condition that needs rest to fully heal. He’s had it for several weeks and it’s getting worse. While miracles are possible, the odds aren’t great that he’ll be 100% come playoff time, given the decision-making personnel involved.

I’m not sure there’s much new to say about the game as we played them a week ago and discussed the aftermath a reasonable amount, but I guess I’ll reiterate some of that here and see if anything interesting stumbles out:

(1) If the game is close down the stretch, what is the offensive game plan? Brunson struggled and sending Hart to screen did almost nothing.

(2) Overall Brunson and KAT both struggled on offense. Brunson had more attempts than points and KAT only scored 17 on average efficiency. Can we get better games from them?

(3) Three-point percentage disparity. OKC over 50%. NYK under 30%. Very uncromulent. We smoked them in the first half when we shot 41% and they shot 36%. Is our shooting the OKC defense or luck?

(4) Stopping Jalen and SGA again. We held Jalen to 20pts on 52.1 TS%. That’s a win. We held SGA to 33 on 56.7 TS%, which I guess is a win against his season averages?

i’d give us about a 20% chance of winning tonight’s game…

Vegas is giving us around 40%, but I have a feeling we’ll get blown out.

Across a 7-game series 40% translates to about a 29% chance of winning. That’s not too bad but obviously a lot will change health-wise between now and if we ever actually play them.

The biggest problem with the Knicks right now is that there’s 3 superteams ahead of us that look like they’d wipe the floor with several of the recent champions.

If they rested Brunson and Towns for the Raptors game, I’d feel way better about this one and going forward. IMO, neither was at 100% for the Raptor’s game and I doubt playing in it helped much other than improving the probability of winning that single game.

Given Towns is questionable again tonight, I think it’s pretty certain it was a mistake to play him.

I’ve given up on this. Our culture under Thibs is to prioritize winning the current game over all long term considerations and we have the kind of players that take pride in playing through injuries. So it’s likely we’ll be disadvantaged at the end of the season against some fresher healthier teams.

Donovan Clingan still interests me before he gets expensive.

If we were hitting on all cylinders I’d say odds were quite decent tonight. But between KAT (walking wounded), Jalen and Mikal (shooting woes) at the moment, and still no Deuce, I’d be very happy with a fairly competitive game for three quarters.

I’d be ecstatic with Kolek and Huk for the last five minutes as the Thunder pull away…
