CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn agrees with the Hive’s worries about our thin bench, compared to our GREAT starting lineup.
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/knicks-biggest-weakness-was-exposed-by-late-thunder-comeback-and-they-may-only-have-a-month-to-fix-it/
OKC has great depth* (and they were missing Chet and Caruso!) and even our closest opponents, BOS and CLE, have a better bench.
Deuce and Mitch will help a lot, but resting our starters a little more should be a priority.
I hope Leon can work something soon, but maybe we’ll need to wait for the next off-season to sweep some valuable guys at the veteran minimum, like other top-heavy teams did before.
* I wonder if their depth would be so useful with Thibs on the bench, but maybe I already know the answer… đ
Thibs needs to develop his bench or heâs setting this team for disappointment.
I wish I could disagree with a collective as respectfully as you did, Milo.
The Thunder without Chet are like us without Towns. That theyâre so good without him is remarkable.
Sadly I think I made my son a Thunder fan last night. I took him to the Christmas Day game to get him his first taste of basketball and last night I let him stay up late to watch with me. Alas, his favorite color is orange and he immediately took to the Thunder uniforms.
I consistently pointed out that the blue team has orange as their secondary color but it had no impact. By the middle of the second quarter he was cheering for Thunder baskets and when the Knicks went on their spectacular run to close out the half I was being jeered by my 6 year old mini me.
Thank god I cut him off at the half and went straight to story time before bed. I couldnât have handled his joy during the Knicksâ collapse.
First thing he asked me this morning was âdid the orange team win?â
I lied.
Sound parenting.
Kids do forget things.
We definitely need another piece off the bench. Not having Deuce (and Mitch) highlights the problem but Deuce isnât always going to have a good game and we need one more bucket getter, preferably a wing, off the bench.
The new second apron rules really makes it tough to add to already strong teams with lots of stars like the Knicks, so that’s rough.
That said, the new second apron rules are also the reason the Wolves traded Towns, so it’s all good, new second apron rules! We’re more than even!
There are many ways to arrive at the correct place đ
You might imagine my feelings when my 18 yr old informed me in 2007 he wanted to attend Middlebury College, one of the more liberal institutions in the country and major in Poly Sci. I asked him where he was going to get the 52k per year and he said “You and Mom..”
I said yep…. as long as you double major in Molecular Biology, too.
Today he’s pretty happy as neurosurgeon.
Brian, Holy shit is right. What a deal for the Celtics
âGuys like Previous, Shamet, Payton and Sims are 3rd string players. Theyâll be fine against the typical team in the NBA, but not against the very best teams in the league that have quality starters and a quality bench.â
Again, who the fuck is âPaytonâ? We have no such player, and this is the second time in three days mentioning this shit. âPrevious.â
G-d.
My million-dollar question this morning is did we lose because one of the best defenses in the league tightened up in the 4th quarter or because the starters had tired legs and their shots stopped falling?
Doogie, you might want to lighten up on people falling victim to autocorrect.
ESS – Probably a bit of both. People seemed to be whining about the refs a lot too. Surprised the game thread didnât get Tâd up.
One of the biggest differences between the teams I noticed last night besides the depth was that their shooting guard masquerading as a power forward is built like a truck. The fact that Jalen Williams can effectively guard a dominant center like Towns seems unfair.
âDoogie, you might want to lighten up on people falling victim to autocorrect.â
But why? I get autocorrected all the time. Then I see it, and then I fix it. Easy-peasy. đ And autocorrect isnât to blame for the idiocy of thinking that Elfrid Payton is still on the squad, or that Gary Payton or Gary Payton II ever was.
Maybe Shamet is still working his way back but it seems criminal to me to play Precious, Shamet and Payne so few minutes. All three of them are perfectly cromulent veteran bench pieces. Giving them a few more minutes each isnât going to kill our chances.
Iâm expecting a loss tonight after such a hard fought game. It is what it is but Leon and Thibs gotta figure something out. I donât fault Thibs too much for not playing Kolek or Huk or Dadiet but it seems insane to me that he wonât give the three vets off the bench he does play a few more minutes.
Thanks for the defense, but he doesnât bother me. I rarely proofread anything I write. Iâm too busy. There are going to be spelling and grammatical errors from time to time with or without autocorrect. As long as the message is communicated well enough to understand, Iâm good. If âdogieâ doesnât like it, he can skip over my posts the same way I skip over his.
Mostly because the 20th best 3 ball team in the league shot 52% and the Knicks, for some reason didn’t attempt a single pass into the post with KAT guarded by a Lilliputian with the game on the line.
KAT’s tendency to disappear in big games is the most important criticism of him. He’s not the type of player to go out and demand the ball, even if he should. 13 shots is just not enough for him in a big game, especially when they are double teaming Brunson at midcourt.
Wemby-Jokic highlights worth watching.
That kid is going to be absurdly good if he can avoid injury
Agree with everyone else that the lack of depth â both the quality of guys on the bench and Thibs’ reluctance to play them â caught up with us last night, and will continue to be an issue until or unless Leon can fix it with the meager resources he has left after the three big trades. With Chet injured, we have a stronger starting lineup than they do (and might even with Chet). But OKC just has wave after wave of guys whom they can put in and trust to do good things on one or both ends of the court, which tires out our guys and keeps their stars a bit fresher.
Also, this was my first extended view of SGA in a while, and good lord, that guy is good in NBA games. If only he had been that good in a 3-on-3 scrimmage at draft time, though…
Chet may eventually be a great player, but right now he is no Towns on offense. The gap between Towns and our backups is monstrous. Itâs way larger than the gap between Chet and I-Hart. We wish we had I-Hart as a backup.
I-Hart is an efficient scorer, excellent rebounder, good playmaker and good defender. Much or what Chet gives you on offense that I-Hart does not will probably come from Shaiâs already highly efficient usage and/or be the 3s that I-Hart doesnât give you. Chet is no Towns from 3 at this age.
I think the real benefit is going to be better spacing with Chet, not losing a lot when heâs resting given I-Hart is his backup and the opportunity to go big against certain at matchups. For example, maybe they would have beaten the Bucks with both.
It was probably a little of both.
They tightened up, made it more difficult, we missed some shots, they were fresh, ran, and got wide open looks we didnât close out well on because we were tired.
If you can’t use context clues to figure out “Payton” refers to “Payne,” you’re an idiot (I don’t think you’re an idiot, I think you’re a short-tempered pedant).
Macri: “In a make or miss league, they went 1-of-9 from long range in the fourth quarter while the Thunder went 6-of-8. Shit happens.”
Thereâs an argument for giving our bench more minutes so we donât burn out our starters or cause any minor injuries to linger or get worse. But our bench is weak other than Deuce and eventually Mitch. So if we do that, weâll probably lose some extra games along the way. Thatâs not in Thibs DNA. If we had a better bench, heâd play them.
He should at least play the young players in any blowouts in either direction a couple of minutes sooner. He could always reverse course if the unthinkable happened and they made a huge run in a minute or two.
“If you canât use context clues to figure out âPaytonâ refers to âPayne,â youâre an idiot (I donât think youâre an idiot, I think youâre a short-tempered pedant).”
Yeah, yeah, but why would this occur from two separate posters over a three-day period? It’s really not that difficult to get our players’ names typed correctly. Or at least it shouldn’t be. And no one in my actual life thinks that I’m short-tempered. Quite the opposite, actually.
Doogie, who cares? Why do we need 7 posts harping on the same typo? Just get over it man
It is when you are on the phone all day with Medicaid, Medicare, Emblem health, Visiting Nurse Services, Attending Home Care, nurses, doctors and physical therapists for your 90 year old mother, nurses and aids from Home First for your brother that’s on the spectrum, all while taking care of their house and bills and making sure they have enough food. That doesn’t even count keeping your girlfriend from leaving you because you barely have the time and energy for her. (not to mention I like a horse today at Santa Anita đ
Point being, I make a lot of mistakes these days because I’m overwhelmed with things to do and think about. This is one of my escapes. There’s no reason to be overly picky on these spelling and other errors no matter who makes them. I’m wrong enough about basketball. Who cares about “Payton”
Itâs really not that difficult to figure out that âpotential #1 pick Ace Baileyâ refers to the Ace Bailey who is a potential #1 pick, yet your police procedural lasted two days and extended into multiple threads. So maybe go easy on the rest of us, you know?
I am generally anti-ref blaming. These things tend to even out, etc.
But this was an absolutely enormous play and I said in the game thread I thought iHart stepped out in real time.
I don’t think the refs cost us the game and some real weaknesses were highlighted. It can’t be a total coincidence that our 4th quarter net rating is -6.1, right between the Wizards and the Jazz for 24th in the league.
Hard for me to say whether Thibs’ hands are truly tied, or he should play the, um, limited bench guys we do have some more. Probably a bit of both. In any event, would be happy to get some *drumroll please* cromulent reinforcements at basically any position.
Itâs also kind of egregious that KAT took zero threes with short players guarding him.
Ugh, hang in there Strat. They appreciate you and are lucky to have you. Pulling for your horse.
It happens bc posters post from their phones and used the word Payton for many years so the phone autocorrects. Sometimes people donât catch it and sometimes the phone will even autocorrect as you post the comment.
In summation. Lighten up.
Then a) use your laptop instead of your phone, or b) be more careful fix it before posting. Both easy. đ
So the phone autocorrects to “Payton” from years ago, but cannot see that one has been using “Payne” more recently. Got it.
They’d be better off with RJ, IQ, and the five 1s.
Things and states that result, result from causes and predicates. NBA rosters do not sprout or otherwise result from divine participation or intervention. That should always be remembered.
We have a .577 team eFG%. We Are Not Going Back to Clank Barrett.
@Hubert,
Hope for your sake the Knicks start incorporating more orange into their jerseys next year. Maybe they’ll have an all orange city jersey soon.
We tried running the Brunson-iHart offense last night, but it turns out getting the ball to a 7′ iHart is a lot easier than getting the ball to the 6’4″ Hart, especially when said 7′ iHart is the man doubling Brunson.
I think we’d have been better off using KAT at the top of the key, despite Hart being a better passer and ball handler, for the simple fact it’s easier to get the ball to him. He’s proven himself to be a good enough passer from the top of the arc on top of being your 2nd best player.
Let’s get Luke Kornet back. He’s still on the right side of 30.
And Jeff Green is 38 years old, in his 17th season, on his 11th team, and currently starting for the 22-12 Houston Rockets.
Strat, what you are doing for your mother and brother is admirable. Itâs enormously difficult and deeply taxing. I was my motherâs personal nurse and caretaker during the pandemic. 6 months of liver cancer and figuring out how to say the things you need to say when every moment is one you are either trying to savor or forget. No in between. All of our journeys are personal so if this misses you, sorry to belabor an ordeal of enormous weight. I wish you balance and peace and any windows of unadulterated joy you might find along the way. I found gratitude that I was able to complete the cycle of life with my mother even though millions around the world were unable to even share a âgoodbyeâ as their loved ones were consumed by a plague. I have a space (as Iâm sure many here do) in my heart for you during this challenge. Go that horse.
Daniel Gafford: yes, please. Probably ungettable now, though. And Grimes had 26 last night.
Not having a bench that Thibs trusts is a problem the Knicks are going to have to solve. That team is not going to get any easier to beat along the way. Itâs on Thibs. Itâs on Leon. They need to figure it out or we could be looking at a rather dissatisfying close to what has been such a promising season. Weâre going to have to lose some games in the regular season because fuck the regular season. The starting lineup does not need to develop chemistry anymore. They need a fucking break.
Okongwu. Also yes, please.
I donât want to use my laptop, boomer.
I donât carry my laptop around with me.
You can simply let it go. Itâs a bball blog not a dissertation.
Yes you could make the excuse early that the starting 5 needed PT to gel but weâre past that point. They need to let them rest some, develop the bench and then have end of the game scenarios like last night but with the starters actually being fresh so they can learn how to close out in those situations.
Weâve actually been incredibly lucky so far none of our starters have gotten hurt.
I mean even if Thibs refuses to go beyond 8 men at least have those three bench players play 15 minutes each. There is no reason to not do this.
No matter our disagreements over the years, we can all come together on this one issue: Doogie sucks.
It doesn’t matter which side of the “tank vs hybrid” approach you’re on, doesn’t matter what you think about RJ Barrett, doesn’t matter where you stand on Phil Jackson, doesn’t matter how you feel about Tom Thibodeau’s rotations. Grammar policing on a WordPress blog is the most pathetic thing in the history of planet earth, and the person that does it is an annoying jerk.
that was nice clarence…
my heart goes out to you strat, wishing you all the strength and patience required to be someone that others close to you can lean upon…
i imagine it’s a big reason why we are even here…
LOL Thanks, JK. đ
(Addendum: geo likes me, so you’re entirely incorrect when you write that you “all come together” on that. You probably shouldn’t speak for others, but whatev.)
and, on the other side of things, hearing about hubie doing dad duty makes me smile from ear to ear…
you are definitely not old hubie, but not a young kid either…
i have to imagine the prospect of being a dad may not have always seemed a possibility…
it sounds like you are feeling very blessed for the opportunity to be: dad…
one of the toughest, but greatest, jobs ever…
have a blessed day dad/hubie đ
Edit: maybe there’s some kid’s knick gear you can pick up that highlights orange…I like the color myself and have some orange knick stuff…
@EB next year weâre watching all the IST games on the orange court.
@geo thanks, my man. Luv ya.
Another reason why I never elected to procreate. My dad was Liverpool and I was Arsenal. He tried to bribe me. I didnât take it. 4 decades later and weâre just starting to mend.
Strat, I went through a similar circumstance with my mom and my wife , whose father is in home hospice care is currently experiencing it.( Dealing with health insurers and Medicare is a special kind of hell). Easier said than done, but allow yourself some me time( I had a brother helping out with my mom) and hopefully you have someone to speak with and vent. If not, you have a band of Kbrus to listen.
folks don’t like getting beat with the doogie shtick…
i like folks whom have a strong work ethic, are intelligent, and whom are honest….
beyond that, I gravitate towards other folks more on the periphery of society, other folks whom don’t quite fit in…
so yes, i am partial to your persona…plus, you seem to have your shit together…
it’s a tough thing for some to do, but hopefully at some point you are able to appreciate just how tough life is for others…
allow yourself to be kind to others, be supportive of your community…
not so much for the sake of others, more so for your own…
not sure if any of that makes any sense to you…
Doogie, you said the other day that you aren’t on meds. Maybe you should try some.
My hot takes from last night:
-While our starting 5’s are somewhat comparable, OKC is the better team. They are also very well coached. That was a brilliant defensive game plan in the 4th quarter, and the Knicks had no answer for it. We are comparable offensively, but on defense there is a significant gap.
-This is the first game to expose things that we need to address, hopefully between now and the trade deadline.
-The good news is that we can see next Friday how “hot” these takes are, i.e. how relevant the homecourt/refs/3pt variance/bad bounces thing was determinative. If we lose in similar fashion, meaning that it’s close for 3 quarters and then we get run off the court like we did last night, that would not be a good sign. OTOH, if we throw some new wrinkles at them and the shots start falling and we win by hook or by crook, that will be encouraging.
Very winnable game, which is encouraging in a way. The hero ball from JB down the stretch was annoying and thibs really needs to play our cromulent bench guys like 4 more minutes a night. The good thing is we only have to worry about OKC if we’re in the finals
I read somewhere this morning, and now can’t find it, that we’re something like -6 in fourth quarters. I’m certainly in the “play the bench more, Thibs” camp, but eye test gives me the sense that this isn’t the real problem, or at least the whole problem. We seem to have a tendency to get away from ‘beautiful’ basketball in the fourth. We saw some annoying Brunson heroics this game, and I guess as your point guard captain goes so goes the team. But it feels a bit across the board. And I don’t think it’s because guys are exhausted (although maybe a little…).
I don’t know if it’s just relaxing and trusting your teammates to do the right thing, but my hot take is that there’s still more gelling to be done…
A minor point to back up my take — Knicks average over 7 assists a quarter for quarters 1-3, then drop to 6 for 4th quarters.
Could be various other reasons for this, of course.
Raven, I’m not buying that. Let’s ignore the fact that in our 24 wins, many of them were over in the 4th and either the starters were coasting or we had our scrubs in. In competitive games, opponents level up and have their starters on the court playing at maximum intensity and taking away stuff that might have worked earlier in the game. This is especially true for the best teams that have excellent defenses (e.g. OKC).
Clyde has often said that he would not go for steals early in games because he wanted to lure opponents into thinking that a certain move would work. This might be unique to him, but I think it captures how the defensive intensity ramps up as the clock ticks down.
This couldn’t have been more apparent last night. The moves that worked for Brunson earlier in the game stopped working because they aggressively trapped him and forced the ball where they wanted it to go. After dominating in the post earlier in the game, Mikal was nowhere to be found. OG is virtually useless off the dribble. Josh Hart’s 3pt shot is always there, but most teams will live and die with that shot. Passes to KAT were either unavailable or when he caught them he was blitzed and had to move the ball vs. a swarming D that, other than leaving Hart a late contest away.
And the goal isn’t even to stop us as much as to slow us down enough to take advantage of our shortcomings on defense. I wouldn’t say that SGA or J-Dub scored at will, but OKC’s offensive looks were waaaaay better than ours down the stretch. When we are short of answers on both ends, we wind up losing the tit-for-tat battle.
You can bet that opponents are going to look at that game film and try to copy the same formula. It might not work because we are very, very good on offense. But the Celts and Cavs will surely play us the same way (they probably would have done so anyway, it’s not rocket science.)
OKC simply adjusted their defense after the half and we had no answer. Getting KAT open at the 3pt line wouldâve been a nice change of pace, but unfortunately Thibs didnât consider that.
The fact that we played so well in the first half is definitely promising, but the team still has some work to do (even before we start to integrate Mitch).
“Doogie, you said the other day that you arenât on meds. Maybe you should try some.”
No, thanks. Don’t want any, and don’t need any. But thanks for your concern.
“No, thanks. Donât want any, and donât need any. But thanks for your concern.”
You actually do need them. Very much so. Not for your own benefit, but for everyone else’s. Or just stop posting here since the vast majority find your posts to be a detriment to the conversation. Or just continue to not care about that. Whatever. If you are comfortable in your own skin and couldn’t care less about what the members of a particular community think of you, carry on!
(caveat: if you can muster up the dignity to read the room and act accordingly without meds, it would be greatly appreciated by most of us.)
Nope. Donât need âem. If you knew me IRL, youâd probably like me. Everybody does.
I know many here think the Knicks need a statement win to prove they’re a championship contender but I already think they’re a championship contender so last night was just an annoying loss cause it was a game they should’ve won regardless of the opponent.
My hope for the rest of this season is for the Knicks to finish with a top 5 record in the NBA (currently they have the 4th best record), be relatively healthy come playoff time and take their best shot in the playoffs. Don’t think by the trade deadline they’ll be able to address the depth issues but I still really like the current team and look forward to seeing them make a run come playoff time.
Itâs a notoriously common trait among well-liked people to talk all the time about how everyone likes them
Dear Doogie,
Happy Saturday, I hope you are having a nice start to the new year.
My mom was a line editor for major newspapers and magazines. It was her job to catch mistakes and fix them, but she never took that job home with her. She could function as the matriarch of a family full of dunces, hipsters, and wanna-be artists (yes, I am an only child) without constant correction and belittlement. You claim to be good at your job, but you have also shown that you struggle with inferring context, which seems like a major occupational impediment. Itâs like being a point guard who canât dribble with his left hand, or a center who canât catch. If you edited Faulkner, or Kerouac, or James Joyce youâd be leaving greasy smudges all over it for no reason at all.
Not to say that we are a collection of Faulkners here. But what we have here at Knickerblogger is pretty special. You are surrounded by extremely intelligent people who share their thoughts liberally on a wide spectrum of things. I have learned so much from the armchair contributors â valuable stuff that I carry with me in my off-line life. Your presence here is to mute conversation and try to cater the site to your liking, which appears to be having us all just name tall people and ask âare they available?â So far, your greatest contribution has been teaching me that Markanen has two Ks in it, which, as the son of a professional line editor, could come in handy should the need to write my mom about the Utah Jazz ever arise, but, for all other intents and purposes is completely worthless to know.
Listen, I have my grammatical hangups, hell everybody does. For example, my kids have been playing the Wicked soundtrack non-stop for two weeks. There are three separate occasions across multiple songs in which the Grande, nĂ©e Chenoweth, character uses âIâ instead of âmeâincorrectly. It angers me, and I want to rip the Alexa from the wall and hurl it out the window every time I hear it. But⊠I donât. Because there are bigger issues to rage against in life than Stephen Schwartzâs syntax. I just tell myself âit brings my kids joyâ, and move on. But I also donât listen to it when my kids arenât around because I recognize that the music of Wicked just isnât for me. I choose to avoid it the best I can. Maybe the same applies to you and this site, snd maybe you should do the same?
“I know many here think the Knicks need a statement win to prove theyâre a championship contender but I already think theyâre a championship contender so last night was just an annoying loss cause it was a game they shouldâve won regardless of the opponent.”
I don’t think “championship contender” is a useful way to characterize the Knicks. I agree that we fall into that category, but there’s still a pecking order.
I don’t get where the “we should have won” stuff comes from. We were soundly beaten in every aspect of the game in the 4th quarter. Any objective observer would come to that conclusion. We didn’t just miss 3’s or commit turnovers. We were funneled into bad shots, our driving lanes were taken away, and our turnovers were forced, not careless brainfarts. Their offense consistently generated better looks than ours did. Sure, it helped that Wiggins had a career night, but he was lining up the seams on the ball. Not to mention that they were the guys on the tail end of a B2B.
As I said, if we do a similar number on them (and like all teams, they will be fired up to play at MSG) I’ll be less concerned.
First — yes, Z-Man, I think you’ve nicely pulverized my rather anemic take (at least I caveated the hell out of it).
Second, I’m trying to decide which is funnier, the Doogie whompings (which are largely excellent), or his beaming on the podium, shouting “You like me! You really like me!” despite the fact that he did not actually win an award, but instead is being told to shut up.
Finally, another weak take. If I was a betting man, I’d bet that the Knicks are going to come out pissed off and hammer the Bulls. At least for three quarters…
rewatched q4. watching live also thought it was mainly an offensive short circuiting: too much jalen heroball, not enough kat, not enough movement and ball movement. on rewatch thought this partly held up (the one jalen tov trying to slip a pass through the ihart trap was painful), but the defense was a much bigger eye sore.
we had severe communication breakdowns in the fourth. didn’t seem to know if we were hedging or switching or trapping the pick and roll. gave a clean lane or clean roll on almost every possession, and it was either unintentional or unexpected by the help. every possession seemed like it was josh hart panic helping at the rim.
also failed to talk through two easy transition pick ups. only once saw the players pointing fingers (when og and kat flubbed a simple pnr), but it happened on repeat. seemed like we were caught in between on almost every screen. we actually got multiple breaks on d (j dub missed two fts, ihart missed two fts, sga fouled by hart uncalled, ihart and one called non shooting), or it would have been worse. other than one outstanding iso job by og on sga, it seemed like nearly every possession was a miscue.
Nice one, Donnie.
“Nope. Donât need âem. If you knew me IRL, youâd probably like me. Everybody does.”
Well that means one of the following things must be true:
-You are equally clueless about how you are perceived IRL and folks are just too polite to tell you how annoying they find you, maybe because they realize that you are on the spectrum and have empathy for you. There’s a mentally handicapped guy at my gym like that, every time I see him he says “How’s your daughter? Tell her I said hi, we miss her!” and I always respond kindly with a smile. If you asked him, he would tell you that everyone likes him.

I’m going with Door #1.
Knicks had a 12 pt lead at halftime, lead by 8 at end of 3rd quarter and despite the awful start to the 4th quarter they still lead by 5 with 7 mins left. Knicks should’ve won last night.
In terms of championship contenders of course all the top teams shouldn’t be considered equal but some here feel if on paper the Knicks aren’t a top 2 team then they have no chance. In general throughout NBA history that’s usually been the case but in the past few years since the Golden St and LeBron Cavs era that no longer has been true, been a few instances of lower seeded teams reaching the NBA Finals.
My feeling is no matter who the Knicks play in the playoffs it’s gonna take at least 6 games to eliminate them, I believe they have a legit fighting chance against even Boston and OKC. That may not be enough for some and I understand that but for me right now it’s a pretty good place to be in.
“Itâs a notoriously common trait among well-liked people to talk all the time about how everyone likes them”
Bad armchair diagnosis. Bad; real bad. I don’t “talk all the time about how everyone likes me.” In fact, here is the only place I’ve ever been pushed to defend my character, so here is the only place I’ve ever done it at all.
pt, on thing I haven’t mentioned is that the physicality of the game was reminiscent of the ’90s, and that worked against us in this particular game. Specifically, Dort was taking ridiculous liberties with Brunson, there was one play off the ball where he seemed to be hanging onto Brunson’s arm preventing him from breaking free. KAT was being mauled off of his spots by shorter defenders and bumped on the catch. I truly can’t believe how much they are letting go this year in general, and in this game specifically.
“Knicks had a 12 pt lead at halftime, lead by 8 at end of 3rd quarter and despite the awful start to the 4th quarter they still lead by 5 with 7 mins left. Knicks shouldâve won last night.”
Really, this statement is beneath you. A 5-pt lead with 7 minutes to go is meaningless. I mean, if we were down by five with 7 minutes to go and came back and won, would you be saying that we should have lost the game? (Oh, never mind, you would have prematurely called it the worst loss of the season by that point lol!)
Door #1 is so wrong that it’s almost spectacularly hilarious. And I’m not on the spectrum of anything, but feel free to think otherwise from afar if you so wish! đ
We agree, they tightened the defense in the 4th quarter…
… And despite their very aggressive defense they were whistled for 2 (two) fouls in the 4th, the first one with only 2:08 left to play.
Josh Hart alone had more fouls in the quarter than the entire OKC team.
We were robbed, pure and simple, and I hope we’d get the same home cooking whistle next week.
In general NBA refereeing has been really, really, really bad so far but yesterday was pure comedy.
P.S. My apologies to J-Hart. During the game I thought he got the technical for taunting Benedict Hartenstein and I criticized him, but he was protesting with the refs and he was absolutely right.
Many folks on the spectrum are the last to know. They think they are perfectly normal and the rest of the world just doesn’t get them. They are oblivious to social cues. Sound familiar?
Nope. LOL
A quick google search revealed the following:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents with a wide range of signs and symptoms that can vary in severity and individual expression. Some common characteristics include:
Social Communication Difficulties:
Difficulty making eye contact
Reduced interest in social interactions
Challenges understanding and using social cues
Delayed or absent language development
Repetitive use of language, such as echolalia (repeating words or phrases)
Repetitive Behaviors and Restricted Interests:
Insistence on routines and resistance to change
Repetitive movements, such as hand flapping or rocking
Intense focus on specific objects or activities
Unusual sensory sensitivities to sounds, textures, or tastes

Shit Z-man you’re right, I didn’t call it the worst loss of the season last night. I’m getting soft!
Agree with Milo that the real issue in the 4th quarter was defense . The offense wasn’t pretty by any means, but neither team was scoring at will, really. I think the defensive lapses were mainly due to physical and mental fatigue, since most of the mistakes were, like, botching a simple PnR coverage.
I would love for us to do something at the trade deadline but I’m not optimistic: I’ve been near obsessively been checking everyone’s roster for sub 5m trades we could make with our bench flotsam, but none of the options seem like that much an improvement. I’m stuck thinking that the best trade we could make is for something like Sims for Toumani Camara, or Sims for Daniel Theis. To be sure, either trade would be a net gain, but only at the margins.
As such, we may be locked into this very good but not championship level team (for the record: I think we are and will continue to be a top 5 team in the league) for the season, unless Mitch becomes a DPOY on return. Next year, when we have a bit more cap flex, may be the real window, which is something other posters have also mentioned.
Nope, donât have any of those. LOL đ
My 2 cents prediction for tonight – we go out of our way to get Towns more involved in the offense and he goes off, similar to what happened after the Cavs loss, when we beat Miami. Let’s see.
You mean Markaten?
Idiot. LOL

Respectfully, I just don’t see it this way. We have the #2 offense in the NBA, yet were held to 107 points, and 41 points in the second half. It’s a given that our defense is just okay at best, so it is not useful to pin this on our D.
Again, we were held to 41 points in the second half, so the game evolved into a defensive struggle, and we are not going to win those kinds of games against the better 2-way teams, not with the likes of JB and KAT on the floor. Who were the weak links defensively for the Thunder? Who could we isolate and attack, whether in iso or in PnR? I sure didn’t see anyone. KAT didn’t have a single open look from 3 all game. Neither did Payne. Brunson went 0-5, mainly on contested looks. Hart had more attempts than KAT, Brunson, Payne and Shamet combined. How is that not on the offense?
If we actually do pull those kinds of games out against the likes of the Celts, Cavs, or Thunder, it’s probably because they are missing good looks or getting a bad whistle.
BTW I sincerely apologize if my posts directed at Doogie have come off as in any way insensitive to folks on the spectrum, or experiencing any form of mental/emotional difficulty. In that spirit, I’ll cease and desist.
@Z-Man,
To my mind, this was the confluence of two issues that are not related to our offense per se. The first is that our guys were clearly tired–and that is because we currently have no bench. I think we would’ve put up a much more robust fight in the 4th if we had a bit more depth. The second issue, as I saw it, was the exceedingly lax whistle (which I think affected us our gameplan more than OKC without being the difference-maker, for whatever that’s worth) that allowed them to flawlessly execute their strategy of blitzing Brunson and KAT. Maybe we have no answer for our stars getting mugged.
This is not to say that there weren’t real offensive issues–there was too much of Brunson trying to break the blitz after the refs had made it clear that nothing but the most egregious muggings would be called on either side–but it seemed like the bigger problem, to my eye at least, was simply being unable to defend a simple action in the 4th.
That’s fair, alecto. My worry is that the defensive issues are more inherent than fatigue- or ref- related. I fear that these inherent issues have been largely masked by a ridiculously easy schedule, and that they will become a repetitive theme going forward in this next 30-game stretch. Hopefully it’s just Knicks Fan PTSD rearing its head!
The Knicks’ defense…
We rank 14th in the league, and that seems about right really. Yes, we’ve had the easy schedule, but we also started off VERY rough defensively and seem to have improved a bit. The underlying numbers look how you’d expect a Thibs defense to look: decent in defensive eFG%, not so great in turnovers created, solid in defensive FT/FGA. We allow a not-so-hot 3PT% but our 2PT% allowed has gotten steadily better as the season has gone on.
The thing that’s most worrying about this team is a potential injury spiral. We lean very heavily on the top six guys in our rotation, and when one goes down, those minutes have to go somewhere. When one or two guys gets hurt, Thibs is just going to play the other top six players more minutes to compensate.
OKC got useful minutes last night from guys who are probably their 9th-12th best players. They’re not afraid to play those guys. They got 66 minutes from their bench and we got 36. Presti has done an exceptional job of backfilling their roster with guys that can go out there and not kill you. In a sense he has mastered the art of “iteration” that the Dodgers have done so well in MLB (and which David Stearns also seems to understand). I had almost forgotten that they drafted Nicola Topic last year, a true lottery talent who is a perfect fit for them, should be an excellent ball dominant Goran Dragic-style guard for them who can run the offense when SGA sits. He’s out for the year with an injury but he’s an excellent prospect. They’re playing the long game.
A lot of attention gets paid to the big asset haul that Presti pulled off, but he has also done an incredible job of making smart little moves around the margins. They’re like a bottomless well of talent.
We had something like four turnovers in a row at the beginning of the fourth quarter. To me, that was the turning point. It was awful to watch. I donât think that was totally them stepping up their defense, we got tired and/or lazy too.
Yeah Topic was a really smart pick because they can put off paying him for an extra year.
Letâs face it: Itâs very very hard to compete with what OKC has done⊠become the best team in the league and the team with the most draft picks? What Presti has done is pretty unprecedented.
Frankly Iâm more comfortable comparing our team to Boston, who also has better depth but found it late in the draft or kicked to the curb.
That said, I think youâre all underestimating Leon and Aller. I bet they net us some bench goodies at the deadline by working the contacts and crunching the numbers.
The absurdly easy schedule recently was so weird, because while I loved seeing them destroy teams, there definitely was a bit of a dulled joy to it all. Them kicking Minnesota’s ass, on the other hand, felt really good, ya know?
