As a follow on to yesterday’s discussion of The Replacements’ Tim album, I recall reading someone in the ‘Mats (maybe Tommy Stinson?) commenting about Tommy Erdelyi/Tommy Ramone’s production.
I think the comment was that Tommy’s hearing by that time was basically shot from all his years drumming live with the Ramones, thus the lackluster end product. I guess they so admired him that they just went with it at the time.
As much as I love the album, I’m not sure I’m going to spring for $70 or whatever for the Let it Bleed 4 cd and one LP set. I’d really like just the original album or maybe a double with some outtakes.
MJ & Van Gundy backing up Clyde would be better than letting Wally do games
If he doesn’t go back into coaching JVG taking over full time when Clyde retires would be perfect.
I would rather have Wally than MJ. I guess if having MJ moves Wally out of the picture, clearing the way for someone new when MJ goes back to the national telecast, that would be great. But I can’t listen to him. Hand down man down my butt.
I think I said this the last time they were discussed but I somehow totally missed The Replacements my whole life. Which is strange.
I usually don’t like album “retcon” mixes, where an album is “fixed” many years after the fact with a brand new mix from the master tapes. There are a few exceptions though, and the new mixes of Tim are an exception. They really did fix a gigantic flaw of what should have been a great album. I listened again last night in headphones and it’s an entirely different and better record, full stop.
The previous release Dead Man’s Pop did a similar retcon of the overly polished mixes of Don’t Tell A Soul, and I also prefer the retcon mixes of that album, but Don’t Tell A Soul is nowhere near as great as Tim so it just wasn’t that big of a deal.
I also gave it more of a listen JK and fully agree: the 2023 remixes are fantastic.
Tim was always my favorite Mats record because of the songs, and I just accepted it’s “80’s sound.” But now they sound like the epic band they could’ve been considered.
Despite all his talent, Westerberg has had terrible luck with producers… you could almost go so far as to say the band was cursed career-wise… or maybe just self-destructive?
Well, they had some good luck early on hooking up with Peter Jesperson, who was kind of a de facto manager in addition to a producer for them. He brought them pretty far, and helped them make some great and timeless records early in their career. Tim really stands alone as the only truly great record they made that was marred by crummy production. Some people don’t like Jim Dickinson’s production of Pleased To Meet Me but I think that record sounds incredible, I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
I will say that I don’t care for Scott Litt’s clinical production of All Shook Down, which has a very separated kind of sound, like everybody is playing in a different room at a different time. The songwriting is really strong on that record but the performances just aren’t there in my opinion.
I know this isn’t musicblogger, but…….
Yes, the season couldn’t start soon enough.
Who else wanted Deion to go undefeated? Damn.
Who hurt you, Doogie? It’s a safe space.
I’m good. I didn’t think that expressing my desire for the Colorado story to go at least a little bit further was anywhere near tantamount to a cry for help on anything.
Ever try to play Alex Chilton on guitar? There is serious magic on that record. Their live versions pale in comparison. It’s slick and period-specific and it totally works.
Never Mind is one of the best songs of the end of the Mats’ prime, and the sheen totally works.
I personally have never tried to play Alex Chilton on a guitar. 🙂
I’m not a Boomer, and I certainly ain’t no Gen Zer, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard a Replacements song before. I’m not even sure that I’d heard of them outside of this blog.
I definitely used to listen to the Replacements in high school and/or in college.
It took him 3 games to triple our win total from last season, so it’s still a huge success. Deion might steal some big names for next year’s recruiting class and make a big story of it yet.
Plus Travis Hunter was out, no thanks to a dirty hit from CSU.
