    1. From the last thread:

DRed: Last time I listened to Macri he said we should give RJ 5/150 because it’s between the John Collins contract and the max. Collins is significantly better than RJ and overpaid. Macri seems like a nice enough dude and he’s a passionate Knicks fan but he’s a fucking idiot when it comes to player evaluation.

This is indeed a good topic to discuss. And for that i have some questions for you all… in the next comment.

    2. What should we do about RJ?
1 – Extend him or tell him to prove he’s worth the big bucks this coming season and then we’ll talk again in 2023 (he’s RFA, so there’s no risk for us)?
(in case we offer the extension, and even if you didn’t answer to do it in the first question)
      2 – Should we offer 4 or 5 years?
3 – What should our first offer be (AAV)?
4 – At what money (AAV) should we stop trying to get the deal done?

    3. On my way to MSG to graduate law school. I was wondering what they would’ve done if there was a scheduling conflict, and it occurred to me everyone was probably just like “I mean it’s the conference finals by then, don’t worry about it.”

    4. I’ll start. :)
      1 – Extend him.
      2 – 4 years.
      3 – 20M AAV.
4 – 25M AAV (if he wants more, then tell him to prove it in the coming season).

    5. thenoblefacehumper: On my way to MSG to graduate law school.

      Congrats! ;)

thenoblefacehumper: I was wondering what they would’ve done if there was a scheduling conflict, and it occurred to me everyone was probably just like “I mean it’s the conference finals by then, don’t worry about it.”

      LOL! Smart people! :P

    6. Congratulations TNFH. Do you still have to do the bar exam, or is that done?

    7. Congrats, Humper. And a belated congrats to Z-man as well. Do I see the beginning of a buddy picture here? Midnight Run 2?

    8. There’s literally no reason to extend RJ this summer and I find it bizarre that so many people are acting like it’s a given that we should.

thenoblefacehumper: On my way to MSG to graduate law school.

      Congrats!

    9. Congrats TNFH!

Agreed with telling RJ to earn it this year. He made some progress with regards to attacking the rim and running the offense but he was still to inefficient. If he can improve his finishing and FT% we should see a big boon in production since he attacks the rim so frequently.

    10. Congrats TNFH- Your debates here highly qualify you to litigate, especially briefs and affidavits. Hope for your sake that you choose another area. Very cool to be looking up at the rafters and see all the retired numbers.

the time. it fly. i still remember swaddling you in that res ipsa loquitur blanky. well done.

Congratulations TNFH. Do you still have to do the bar exam, or is that done?

too early for that. expect his first try this summer.

    12. rama as it was with the chickens:
Congrats, Humper. And a belated congrats to Z-man as well. Do I see the beginning of a buddy picture here? Midnight Run 2?

Haha, that’d be fun! Congrats tnfh, now you can concentrate full time on draft prognistications! Maybe we can arrange a joint (npi unless geo is involved) KB celebration.

    13. Haha, that’d be fun!

The question would be who’s the bondsman and who’s the prisoner? (Though I guess in a way that could be the question about the original as well….)

    14. Don’t extend RJ early. Extending players early is how you get Randle’s crap contract.

    15. The only reason to max extend a player is if he is clearly an all-NBA-type player and you want to have goodwill, and avoid the (small) possibility that a team offers a 2+1 with whatever other player-friendly poison pills in restricted free agency. That basically never happens because 1) no one cares about cap space anymore and 2) max-type players will obviously be matched, and so the offering team would just be tying up their cap space forever during the fast-moving free agency period. If not one of these limited situations, then all you’re doing is bidding against yourself.

The best reason for a team to extend a player (not at the max) is to get a discount on their contract later on — player gets guaranteed $ earlier than he would have, team gets the discount. Maxing RJ on an extension would be so incredibly dumb.

Twitter is saying that someone named Jalen Williams may end up being a lottery pick. Quick look at his stats — 50/40/81 basically (55% 2p%). Averaged 20/5/5 per 40

Combine: 6’5.75 in shoes, 7’2.25 wingspan, 8’9.5 standing reach, 209.2 lbs with 8.9% body fat

That is some crazy + wingspan.

    16. Would add re: the extension that just about everyone was actually happy about Randle’s extension – all NBA 2nd team at well below the max salary DID seem like a good deal, and was the win-win situation that extensions were intended to create. Except that Randle turned back into a pumpkin on the court, and into a whiny baby to boot.

    17. RJ is probably going to be a tricky situation no matter what. Obviously, a team would rather wait unless it’s an obvious case. But even if we don’t give him the max now, the big payday is still coming. Unless he totally breaks out efficiency wise next year, it’s still going to be a tough choice with more normal small incremental improvement. Ultimately, what I think they can’t do is count pennies. You can’t keep trading away or letting young talent walk away to start over over a few million or out of impatience. You have to pick your spots, try to develop the player, and…..

    18. swiftandabundant:
Kind of fun how the Warriors beat up on the Mavs taking a bunch of mid range shots while the Mavs tried to jack up 3’s.

      Sometime it be like that

      Seriously.., How is it goink

    19. swiftandabundant:

The Warriors did as good a job of slowing Doncic as can be expected and Dallas doesn’t have many good options after that unless their role players are shooting the lights out from 3. IMO, you can’t count on that every night, especially as the pressure grows. That and their lack of a rim protector are their vulnerabilities. Then again, I thought Suns had the Mavs number. Maybe this will be a better test for Doncic and Kidd.

    20. Crazy how valuable Andrew Wiggins has become even at his salary. Never going to be the alpha on a good team, but he is really great for the Warriors. last 2 seasons has put up nearly 800 3’s shooting 39% after averaging about 33% all the years prior. Crazy to think the Dubs got Wiggins and a lottery pick (Kuminga I think?) from Minnesota for Deangelo Russell of all players.

    24. catching up on better call saul, in to episode four of this final season…

      two thoughts come to mind:
      – i think vince gilligan has another one of these shows in him, and, i have no doubt the quality will continue to improve

      – rhea seehorn will finally get her well deserved emmy nomination (lead actress)…impossible for me to say she should win, because i haven’t seen much other tv stuff that might qualify, but wow is she continuing to dominate on screen

    26. How did not a single NBA voter think that Grimes was one of the 10 best rookies this year?

    27. Brian Cronin:
How did not a single NBA voter think that Grimes was one of the 10 best rookies this year?

It was a pretty good rookie class, and I’m guessing everyone who got votes played significantly more minutes than him. Plus, there’s always draft position bias.

    28. It was a pretty good rookie class, and I’m guessing everyone who got votes played significantly more minutes than him. Plus, there’s always draft position bias.

I’m not irked he didn’t make either of the All-Rookie teams, as I agree, it was a good class, but not a single vote? Cam Thomas got a vote! Josh Christopher got a vote!

    29. Brian Cronin: I’m not irked he didn’t make either of the All-Rookie teams, as I agree, it was a good class, but not a single vote? Cam Thomas got a vote! Josh Christopher got a vote!

Yeah, he should’ve gotten at least one, but Christopher & Thomas both looked pretty good despite having significant flaws. They also played around 400-500 more minutes than Grimes.

If they paid attention to defense for those not drafted top 5, then he definitely should’ve made it. But it’s media vote in the NBA. They’re not gonna do it.

    30. Sending condolences to KYN and all greek nation. Looks like the chariot has reached the destination, may he now go on to conquest paradise. RIP Vangelis.

    31. Hey Noble, you and Taylor Swift are colleagues on the 2022 graduation class! ;)

    32. Brian Cronin: I’m not irked he didn’t make either of the All-Rookie teams, as I agree, it was a good class, but not a single vote? Cam Thomas got a vote! Josh Christopher got a vote!

I’m with you, Brian, he deserved to get some votes. And i wouldn’t trade Grimes for any of those two.

    33. Swift, fwiw, I honestly didn’t even read that as a shot at you, since you aren’t the PJax guy on the board and you aren’t a luddite. And it actually was funny how the Warriors won that game. But I can see how you might take it that way.

The Mavs missed a bunch of open threes and I also think with a different ref the game would have had the same outcome but a different shape.

Wiggins played good defense and is at his peak and scoring 19 points on 18 t-shots in a playoff game is fine. I still find him kind of unremarkable for the attention he still commands. How much worse would they be with, I don’t know, Reggie Bullock? I’d wager not much.

    34. Dallas shot 22.9% from 3 including 3-10 for Bullock, 0-5 for Brunson and 0-4 for Bertans, most of those being open shots. There was a stretch in the first half where Bullock had 3 wide open 3 and missed all of them. Unless the invisible 6th man is on GSW’s side this season, that’s unlikely to happen again.

The Warriors are still a better team but this game was not representative of how Dallas usually plays at all.

    35. IMO, as the playoff pressure increases, so will the probability of having a night when the role players are throwing up wide open bricks from 3. Some of it may be game specific too. On a night when the other team is firing back and they really need those 3s, the rim will tend to shrink. On a night when they get off to a good start and have the lead they might relax and start free stroking. A lot lot of it may be random noise, but not all of it. Part of what makes great shooters great is not just that they can shoot well. It’s that they can shoot well when it matters most. That said, Dallas was so bad from outside we can expect better.

    36. >Swift, fwiw, I honestly didn’t even read that as a shot at you, since you aren’t the PJax guy on the board and you aren’t a luddite.<

I didn't even see it as a shot at Phil (or me) given that Dallas sucked from 3 last night. It was a joke.

Plus, Phil was not against shooting 3s. He was against building your entire offense around P&R and shooting 3s kind of like the Rockets did and now the Mavs are doing. D'Antoni is his anti-Christ. :-)

I give everyone a pass on the Warriors because they arguably had 3 of the 10 best pressure 3 point shooters in NBA history on the same team and Kerr was running large pieces of the triangle and Spurs offense along with the 3 point shooting. I'm not so sure too many teams should be trying to duplicate what they were doing.

If you have guys like Kareem, Shaq, Hakeem, or McKhale in the post you are going to do great in the post and should take advantage, but that doesn't mean it's a good strategy for everyone else. It also doesn't mean you should never go into the post if you don't. A big mismatch is still an opportunity for the right player.

    37. This Everton half has been one of the greatest things I have ever seen in sports

    38. #Sending condolences to KYN and all greek nation. Looks like the chariot has reached the destination, may he now go on to conquest paradise. RIP Vangelis.#

      Thanks man
Definitely one of the greatest artists coming from Souvlakistan. Slightly cheesy at times but among the Sacred Monsters of Electronic Music.

    39. Owen:
This Everton half has been one of the greatest things I have ever seen in sports

At least of my teams has a reason to celebrate, even if it’s just surviving relegation lol. It was a great showcase of why relegation is such a positive influence in the quality of games for football.

    40. Appreciate it everyone! I genuinely couldn’t have made it through without you guys, and yes that includes those of you with whom I don’t always agree. Perhaps especially you.

I honestly can’t think of an RJ offer that would accomplish both not overpaying him and not insulting him, so my preferred approach might be to just say from the start that to maintain flexibility we’ll be going into restricted free agency with him and will be delighted to match his best offer.

    41. Congrats TNFH!
There is no way I’d extend RJ right now. He’s just not a number one option and I don’t think there is a team in the league that would max him next year.

    42. Remember the theoretical question about whether some dude off the street could score a basket against an NBA team if given 48 minutes? The Heat look like a team full of that dudes today.

    43. I looked at ESPN’s latest mock draft. Looking at the top picks mostly they are centers or power forward. It made me think that when the Houston GM talked about possibly trading down, it was because they already have young guys at those positions and think it might be better to get a player of some other position in the draft.

By the way, ESPN has us picking Mathurin.

    44. ***By the way, ESPN has us picking Mathurin.***

If Mathurin is available at #11, he’ll have a great career in Oklahoma City. #dolansrazor

    45. I hate to admit it, but now is the perfect time to trade RJ.

I know we all want to love him, but look: he’s played roughly 6500 NBA minutes already and has consistently produced historically bad efficiency.

I know he’s young, but even monumental improvements would only put him in Rudy Gay territory. Yet at his age, we could still use him as the main cog in a star trade. Idk who that star would be, but we should be looking for him asap.

    46. I hate that I find myself rooting for this Celtics team in this series, I feel dirty.

    47. For some reason, I found the Warriors Dallas game more fun to watch than Boston Miami. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the style of play of the two teams.

    48. I think Boston plays some pretty nice basketball to watch, they share the ball a lot and run some really nice plays and they always play super hard. The Heat also hustles a lot but it’s definitely aesthetically less pleasing to me.

    49. Yeah, I hate to admit it but the Celts are exactly the kind of team I would love to root for. Talented, cohesive, gritty. The guy who has surprised me the most is Marcus Smart, I didn’t think they could advance too far with him as the primary PG option, but he’s making a believer out of me. And I always thought they made a mistake by getting away from their defensive identity by bringing on guys like Kyrie, Kemba and Hayward and not re-signing Horford. They definitely made some good moves this year.

    50. I enjoyed the Garnett Celtics. So there is precedent for saying nice things about the Celtics.

But as we have learned lately, precedent means nothing. So not a kind word shall pass my lips.

      Go Heat!?!

    51. Morning all – I am sure this will get swallowed up by the next thread, but such is my schedule.

First- congratulations on graduation from law school TNFH! My brother is an NYU Law alum, hope for much success for you in the future.

Second – not sure if people have heard it yet, but Berman was on the Locked on Knicks podcast that dropped this AM, and he had a bunch of nuggets in there:
      – does not expect the Knicks to bring Mitch back — says the Knicks don’t want to pay such a limited offensive player that kind of $, think Noel Sims could do much of what Mitch can do, continues to float Myles Turner (or Brogdon) as potential acquisitions. Also says Mitch may want a change of scenery
      – does not expect the Knicks to get Brunson – thinks he will be out of the price range at which the Knicks can make it happen, since he expects Cuban to pay him appropriately
      – says Thibs may be a goner by ASB this year unless the Knicks start really well – and that Johnny Bryant would be next man up.
      – thinks unlikely the Knicks will trade up in the draft as the consensus seems to be 1-5 picks are one tier and after that it gets pretty flat.
      – thinks Mathurin will be gone by 11. Still thinks Dyson Daniels is a reasonable possibility (I would be happy with this!)
      – was sort of ambivalent about Randle – seems to think there is some chance he comes back after taking some time off. But also that the Knicks seem comfortable with idea of Toppin as the PF of the future.

    52. Yikes, so that sounds like they’re going to do….nothing? Except let Mitch walk? Also, how can they think Noel can provide anything after missing all of last season basically? Even if they can’t unload Noel right away, why not sign Mitch and then Noel is gone by the end of the season? Noel is more limited on offense than Mitch and Mitch is way younger and can improve still.

I would be really sad if we let Mitch go for nothing. I think he can be a starting C on a contending team. Yeah, he needs to fix the free throws and show a little bit more diversity offensively. But there is still time for that to happen for him. Would be a huge letdown if we let him go.

    53. Berman is the RJ of Knicks beat writers, gets a lot of attention but the efficiency is very low.

    54. I won’t be all that sad about losing Mitch. As I’ve indicated, I think you can get 80% of his production at 50% or less of what he is likely to get paid, and that is ignoring his injury history. Or alternatively, you can invest more salary in a more complete player.

However, I agree that losing him for nothing is bad asset management. He should have been traded before the deadline for whatever was being offered. The fact that he wasn’t traded probably speaks to how KB Mitch stans have an inflated sense of his value around the league. I doubt that anyone offered anything more than a couple of 2nd rounders or bad contracts for him.

    55. Don’t worry Frank, when the daily thread is up i’ll copy your comment to the new thread.
