    1. Good morning, people. Well, here it’s in the afternoon, but talking with you guys i’m always on ET time. :) It’s gameday and for my plan to get to 11-5, we must win in Charlotte. Can we do it? Let the discussion begin…
(the other 3 games are easy, against the 23rd, 27th and 29th placed teams, and at MSG)

    2. Tonight’s game will be a good test about where and who this team is.
We’re going to play on the road against a nearly full roster opponent (only P.J. Washington is out) that in preseason was considered “in our tier” or just below.
I imagine that the last two days have not been Thibs’ most accommodating and I’m really curious to watch how the starters will respond.

    3. (the other 3 games are easy, against the 23rd, 27th and 29th placed teams, and at MSG)

You mean the 23rd Indiana Pacers that kicked out asses 10 days ago and 27th Orlando Magic that won at MSG three weeks ago?

    4. I think that home loss to The Magic is the one that has soured so many people to this team. I think the other losses would have been more paltable if we had just won that one game.

    5. not to beat the Obi horse to death but… is there a stat on finishing around the rim whilst being well defended… he HAS to be our top guy in doing that, no? Is it soft touch? elevation? luck? all of the above…?

He does have soft touch around basket / off the glass, which has to make you think he’s gotta have something from 10ft in… can he work in a 8-10 ft fadeaway? forget the 3…

    6. Max: You mean the 23rd Indiana Pacers that kicked out asses 10 days ago and 27th Orlando Magic that won at MSG three weeks ago?

      Precisely. It’s revenge time. ;)

    7. There have been stretches where Obi’s three-point form has looked very good, even when they don’t go in. But there are still nights where it looks like he’s taking moonshots out there from deep. I doubt that’s ever going to be his specialty, but if the coaching staff can help him just find a consistency of form, that would be huge in terms of opening up the floor for his drives. Right now, opposing defenses don’t have to respect him as a threat from downtown.

    8. Extrapolating from past performance this season, there’s a 100% chance we lose all 3 of those games. Home game + terrible opponents = automatic loss for this team

    9. Obi’s three point shot looks horrific. He seems to have regressed honestly. But his offensive game everywhere else looks much improved.

    10. is Obi a little shawn marion with better shooting form but way less defense… shawn moved well laterally and stayed low, stayed down… obi should watch some tape..

    11. Re: Kemba – the most alarming statistic to me is that he’s attempted 9 FT’s in 11 games. When he was in his prime, he was great at getting to the rim and drawing contact. Now, when he penetrates, he has no explosion and it’s easy for defenders to just play him straight up and he’s forced to just dribble through the paint and give the ball up.

He’s not a very useful PG right unless he’s making 3 pointers at a high rate.

    12. Who is Kelan Martin. And Dalano Blanton?

Raptors have really gotten their mojo back although the depleted Sixers roster was helpful. And good win for Indiana.

Tyrese Maxey had a great night. And Duncan Robinson had some major gravity effects. 2-13 and plus 11. Although the other starters going 34-61 might have helped.

    13. KJG: not to beat the Obi horse to death but… is there a stat on finishing around the rim whilst being well defended… he HAS to be our top guy in doing that, no? Is it soft touch? elevation? luck? all of the above…?

He does have soft touch around basket / off the glass, which has to make you think he’s gotta have something from 10ft in… can he work in a 8-10 ft fadeaway? forget the 3…

I don’t know any available stats that are that granular but nba.com/stats does have FG% and frequency split out on how tightly a player is being guarded: https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1630167/shots-dash/

KJG: is Obi a little shawn marion with better shooting form but way less defense… shawn moved well laterally and stayed low, stayed down… obi should watch some tape..

      No

    14. At least the Hornets are exciting to watch and they also can’t really defend very well, so it should be a good game. I fully expect a LaMelo 35 point 15 assists with Oubre hitting 8 threes to keep the “scrub randomly torches us” tradition going.

    15. Kemba made some good moves to the basket last game, but completely flubbed the shot/dump-off pass to Mitch.

I suspect he did prep much for the season in hopes of protecting his knees. It’s possible he’s playing himself into game shape and will catch on halfway through the year, just like last year. But this seems like wishful thinking and doesn’t solve the immediate problem that he may be the worst player in the league right now that’s not 21 or under.

    16. Tyrese Maxey had a great night.

How’s everybody currently feeling about our periodic Maxey vs Quickley debate? Maxey is being asked to carry a much heavier load by Philly than IQ is here, and Quickley remains much more of a deep threat. But Maxey’s starting at point guard for one of the better teams in the league so far this season, whereas IQ is still very much a combo guard.

    17. I don’t see any great mystery.

Payton, Bullock, and Frank are gone. Nerlens missed a bunch of games.

      We added Fournier and Walker.

Everyone on earth predicted our offense would be better and our defense worse. The only thing we didn’t know was how certain players would develop, what lineups we’d use, how they’d work, and what the “net” would be. We still don’t know what the “net” will be.

We had an unbalanced team without enough scoring and spacing last year and it looks like we have an unbalanced team without enough defense now.

I don’t have a huge problem with adding Fournier and I would love Kemba if he was healthy, but I don’t like that combination on the court together at all. IMO, when you already have Randle and RJ on the court, adding 2 more scorers doesn’t add as much on offense as we are losing with that combo on defense. Personally, I don’t think swapping Rose and Kemba changes things much either.

IMO we still have a PG problem. We need someone that is a good defender and playmaker that can also hit an open 3. He doesn’t have to be an elite playmaker or top scorer. He just has to be able to penetrate, make a play, defend really well, and hit an open 3.

I may be crazy, but I think we have to at least take a look at McBride eventually on a night Kemba or Rose is out. He may not be enough of a playmaker yet and he’s probably way too raw, but he’ll defend and he’s not afraid to shoot if he’s wide open. Let’s see.

    18. Continuing my last post, I don’t want to debate the salary because it’s obviously an issue, but IMO Lonzo would look great in a Knicks uniform right now. Sometimes you have to pay a premium for the right young piece with upside. I wanted him during free agency and I’m starting to think we made a mistake.

    19. Kemba made some good moves to the basket last game, but completely flubbed the shot/dump-off pass to Mitch.

Our PGs combined have assisted on 5 Mitchell Robinson buckets and 3 for Noel (granted Noel has only made 7 shots)

    20. Early Bird: Extrapolating from past performance this season, there’s a 100% chance we lose all 3 of those games. Home game + terrible opponents = automatic loss for this team

Shame on you, now i’ve lost the confidence on our first 4 game winning streak. :P

    21. Bruno Almeida: At least the Hornets are exciting to watch and they also can’t really defend very well, so it should be a good game. I fully expect a LaMelo 35 point 15 assists with Oubre hitting 8 threes to keep the “scrub randomly torches us” tradition going.

That scrub (Oubre) had 37 pts, 5 trb, 2 stl in the previous game, with 7-9 from 3P land.

    22. ***is Obi a little shawn marion with better shooting form but way less defense… shawn moved well laterally and stayed low, stayed down… obi should watch some tape..

      No***

It’s funny to read comps like this, because I have read about this current Knicks team of players here way more than I have seen them actually play. I don’t think I saw a Knicks game until the playoffs last year. But this year I have an infant, so I’m trial-running League Pass while I lie on the floor with her for hours at a time in the evening, and I’ve caught a few of the games, and the pictures that have been painted in my mind here are almost unrecognizable to the players I’ve seen on the court.

    23. Donnie Walsh: and the pictures that have been painted in my mind here are almost unrecognizable to the players I’ve seen on the court.

Granted, they’re unrecognizable to ourselves also. :P

    24. Alan: How’s everybody currently feeling about our periodic Maxey vs Quickley debate? Maxey is being asked to carry a much heavier load by Philly than IQ is here, and Quickley remains much more of a deep threat. But Maxey’s starting at point guard for one of the better teams in the league so far this season, whereas IQ is still very much a combo guard.

I was watching Maxey last night and he is almost an IQ clone (or vice versa) but he appears to be (a) slightly more rugged/built than IQ (b) maybe a slightly better handle (c) a better pull up jumper from 10-15 ft so he doesnt have to rely on the floater and (d) is able to finish around the rim a little better….I think IQ has more range but Maxey can hit the open 3 pretty well…

It seems that he (Maxey) has gotten better and the extra floor time is increasing his confidence…which makes me wonder if IQ got extended minutes would he take bigger marginal steps in his development than what his role is affording him right now.

Perhaps if Kemba (see article in NY Post today where he shoulders the blame for the 1st unit follies) ultimately just is done…IQ will get the call and run with it…like Maxey is doing (although it is a small sample size).

    25. Perhaps if Kemba (see article in NY Post today where he shoulders the blame for the 1st unit follies) ultimately just is done

I went looking for the story. Here’s the quote:

“I think I can help my teammates be better at the start of games. I think I can use my voice a little more,” Walker said. “I don’t think I’m energetic enough. And that needs to be my role. I need to get my guys going. I will definitely take some onus on that aspect. I gotta do it.”

Kemba’s definitely aware of the issue. The question is whether he is physically capable of fixing it. And, if not, whether Thibs will make a move or just stick with this rotation all year.

    26. this isn’t the first time obi has been compared to marion here. djphan did it more than once. hard to like that comp. i also don’t agree with the knicks wall video posted here, claiming obi has significant lowered his center of gravity on defense. i think obi’s defense has been a little better, thanks to a genuinely awesome motor in concert with his elite length and ups. but he is still very mistake prone and slow to change direction. it would be awesome if he continued to improve. he made some bad mistakes last game but also made some great plays, including a block against george hill he didn’t get credit for and a great steal on the allen kick out where he essentially hid behind portis and shot his arm out like a tentacle. i still don’t believe a randle/toppin front court will work, but that would be a great thing to be wrong about.

i think maxey is a better prospect than iq. iq is almost surely never doing to be the 2pt threat maxey already is, while the shooting delta is much foggier. i do think iq’s defense has looked a lot better this year.

    27. DudeInKnicksTown:
Didn’t we want to draft Maxey and then settled for Quickley?

I think that’s what the scuttlebutt was back then – tried to maneuver up to get Maxey and when that failed, traded back a little and got Quick.

KJG: not to beat the Obi horse to death but… is there a stat on finishing around the rim whilst being well defended… he HAS to be our top guy in doing that, no? Is it soft touch? elevation? luck? all of the above…?

One of most amazing early Obi stats is that he’s shooting 78.6% from 2P range even though he’s averaging 8 2Ps per 36 and has only 12 dunks on the season (Feels like more!). 85.3% at the rim.

he doesn’t resemble Shawn Marion at all — Marion’s best quality was that he could guard 1-5. Obi certainly can’t.

    28. DudeInKnicksTown: Didn’t we want to draft Maxey and then settled for Quickley?

Yes, we were trying to trade up to pick Maxey, but when that became impossible, we traded back to pick IQ (and then incinerated the added pick! LOL).

    29. Also Marion averaged double-digit rebounds repeatedly throughout his career. And yes, he was a demon defender.

    30. Are you sure you want to disagree with this guy ? Let’s hope he doesn’t come after you! :P

if mr suicide king doesn’t like my hot gravity takes he can come find me holding a camcorder in my mavs ntilikina jersey at belmont this weekend

It’s actually 19 dunks (out of 35 made FG). For some reason, the NBA counts dunks and alleyoops separately.

    32. Donnie Walsh:
***is Obi a little shawn marion with better shooting form but way less defense… shawn moved well laterally and stayed low, stayed down… obi should watch some tape..

When will the madness end Donnie? Are you going to stock a G League squad now?

    33. “if mr suicide king doesn’t like my hot gravity takes he can come find me holding a camcorder in my mavs ntilikina jersey at belmont this weekend”

I’ll be looking for you in the paddock, but make sure you go to Aqueduct because Belmont is closed. :-)

    34. I think Obi in transition is a little like Marion in transition. Obi would be an all star next to prime Nash.

But yeah, the rest. No. Marion was a good passer too. One of the all time great fantasy assets.

    35. It took me halfway through today’s thread to remember that Shawn Marion and Shawn Kemp are two very different people.

    36. Owen:
I think Obi in transition is a little like Marion in transition. Obi would be an all star next to prime Nash.

But yeah, the rest. No. Marion was a good passer too. One of the all time great fantasy assets.

Well, Marion was an allstar prior to playing with Nash. Though his 2P% spiked after Nash got there. Marion was a 45%-48% shooter from 2 his first few years but that number jumped to 52% Nash’s first year and 57% and 58% the next two years. I appreciate that Obi looks like an actual NBA player, which he sure as hell didn’t last year, but he’s still got a long way to go before he’s on like Alex Caruso’s level let alone Marion or another allstar.

    37. Nice little Euroleague game for our friend Rokas yesterday,
      20 minutes (it was an easy win for Barca), 8 points (4-5 2PT 0-1 3PT), 5 assists.
      The kid can pass.

    38. Shawn Marion?

Shawn Marion was a critical piece on both sides of the ball for some very good Suns teams. Toppin is on the bench for a team that may struggle to make he playoffs. I fail to see the similarity at this stage.

    39. So do we think Marion was a good player, a great player or something else?… im a little confused by the commentary… for me, he was good but i didnt love him…
      \

    40. Marion had a very good year 2… clearly not a late bloomer…. why couldnt obi project to be marion-esque by say, year 5 …? at ripe age of 27?

    41. Shawn Marion was a fantastically good player, although I don’t think he qualifies as great in my book. He was a vicious Swiss army knife of a player who, like Dennis Rodman, never should have gotten all those rebounds but somehow always did (five years in double figures). He could score from anywhere and was murder on the break, and while only 6’7″ as mentioned he could guard 1-5. I think of him like a poor man’s Scotty Pippen, which is still a hell of a player.

    42. if mr suicide king doesn’t like my hot gravity takes he can come find me holding a camcorder in my mavs ntilikina jersey at belmont this weekend

I really needed that laugh today, thanks

    43. Given that we are comparing players, I looked up player comparisons for Quickley using CARMELO. Quckley’s best comparison is Klay Thompson (!). Toppin’s is John Leuer ( who?).

    44. if mr suicide king doesn’t like my hot gravity takes he can come find me holding a camcorder in my mavs ntilikina jersey at belmont this weekend

I never want to be on the receiving end of one of these (and if I have, I have clearly blocked it from my memory banks so as to maintain a healthy sense of self)

    45. I love Owen’s picture of Mitch with his knee’s above Randle’s shoulders. I’m afraid we’ll never see that Mitch again.

    46. Given that we are comparing players, I looked up player comparisons for Quickley using CARMELO. Quckley’s best comparison is Klay Thompson (!). Toppin’s is John Leuer ( who?).

I remember Jon Leuer. That is a scary compariosn.

    47. ptmilo: if mr suicide king doesn’t like my hot gravity takes he can come find me holding a camcorder in my mavs ntilikina jersey at belmont this weekend

LOL. I’m sure Mavs #11 jersey looks very good on you. ;)

    48. Knick fan not in NJ: using CARMELO. Quickley’s best comparison is Klay Thompson (!)

CARMELO must be on drugs or something, there’s not a single chance that Quick turns into the new Klay.

    49. “That’s literally a joke I just made in the game thread! Too funny.“

      Great minds? :-)

To the game thread I go……
