    1. Sure, the Bucks badly missed Lopez (54-28 points in the paint, 59-37 TReb including 20 OREB for the Knicks), Middleton and Holiday’s first game back was rough (5 TO in 20 min),
but after a butt ugly first quarter the reaction was very very good,
on the back of the wonderful job of Noel and Rose.

Basically this is a win for last year team, the newcomers were invisible or worse.

Parity reign in the league and the Cavs just won in Toronto, let’s see if we can beat an inferior team before the rematches with Phila and Milwaukee.

    2. Cyber, thanks! It was a incredible game and my daughters team upset a nationally ranked opponent on their home floor. After being down two sets they came back to win three straight in gritty fashion. Unfortunately, my daughter went down with a sprained ankle in the fourth set and will be missing today’s championship game. Seeing your kid crumpled up on the floor crying in a hushed gym is rough but she had a major hand in the comeback and will be okay soon. If they win today they automatically qualify for the NCAA D-III tournament.

At least watching the Knicks run the champs off of their home floor was a way to distract from that! What a monster performance by Rose! Does anyone still think that Mitch is way better than Nerlens?

    3. Last year Mitch surprised us. He could slide his feet to flash and recover, making smart contests, and no longer hunting blocks, it’s why we all thought he was finally playing top-tier defense.

This year Mitch looks too slow to play that level of defense. Idk if that’s brolicity (I think it is), playing behind Kemba, or a prolonged injury recovery, but hopefully that changes.

    4. My comment was more about Nerlens being underrated than Mitch being overrated. Nerlens does so much more than block shots. He gets deflections, tips balls out, and just has a nose for the ball. Obviously he has the worst hands in NBA history but if that wasn’t true he’d be getting paid a lot more.

    5. My grades:

      Randle A-
Hard to argue with 32-12-4 (and 2 blocks). The man does a lot of things, sometimes bad but often very good. He was engaged and if he continues to play this way good thing will come.

      Barrett B +
He soiled the percentages a bit at the end but was instrumental in the third quarter comeback and lead. Another good game in a string that we hope doesn’t end.

      Robinson C-
Maybe he’s still in preseason mode after his long stop, but I’m not sold on Bulk-Mitch and I’d rather have Noel starting.

      Walker D
15 minutes of mediocrity, Thibs benched him for good and he was right. We need to try him with Noel behind to learn if we can absorb his defensive mistakes.

      Fournier C-
Just a little bit more active than Kemba, he hit a wall after the Pelicans game and can’t get out of his funk.

      Rose A +
Fantastic game, he kept us in when the boat was sinking and was the catalyst of the comeback in the third quarter. Very active (23-8-4, + 31 for the game) his ability the change pace based on who’s playing with him was fundamental for the win.

      Noel A
13 Reb, 3 STL and 9 deflections (according to Fred Katz), he changed the defense in a way Mitch didn’t. I know it’s heresy but for me he’s the starting center despite his scissorshands.

      Quickley B-
Encouraging game, very active on defense (3 STL) still needs to find his stroke but he tried hard. Thibs’ faith in him already touched Paytonian level, I hope he’s right (last year the blind faith didn’t help us).

      Toppin C-
Time to start hitting some threes Obi! Not bad, not great, useful…

      Burks C-
Did he really play? Yes he did it. One shot in 13 minutes? Mmmm… 4 DReb by the way…

      The Bench Warmers NG
Full garbage time, no one stood out and only Knox scored a point.

    6. I think Mitch needs to drop some lbs which might come naturally over the course of the season. Find a nice balance between the new muscle and old athletic version.

Offensively his vision and awareness on offense has been much improved hes making some nice passes

    7. DRed:
Nerlens is a terrific defensive big who is garbage on offense.

This is a very simplistic view of Nerlens’ value on the offensive end. How many possessions did he keep alive yesterday during the late game surge?

If anyone is garbage on offense it’s Mitch.

    8. This is a very simplistic view of Nerlens’ value on the offensive end. How many possessions did he keep alive yesterday during the late game surge?

If anyone is garbage on offense it’s Mitch.

Are you saying Nerlens is a better offensive player than Mitch because he got some offensive rebounds in the 4th quarter yesterday? Do you think the Knicks missed a ton of 3s in the first quarter yesterday while Grayson Allen couldn’t miss because Mitch gained too much muscle in the offseason?

    9. I think Noel’s great. I’d much rather have Mitch, though. Together they make an excellent center for this team, which is the most important thing, especially since the team is capped out.

    10. not sure what’s up with taj at the moment, but, it’ll be interesting going forward for a while…last year thibs trusted taj to close over nerlens in a lot of close games, and, right now he probably trusts nerlens over mitch to close games…

mitch is at least 20 pounds too heavy right now…he needs to drop that weight like his next contract is dependant on it…

and for record, dropping 20 pounds wouldn’t hurt me none either…

    11. Most we can pay Mitch is 4/54. On the other hand, few teams are going to have cap space, and I’m skeptical those teams will prioritize Mitch at his current level of play. So we may be able to keep him anyway.

    12. I would do that deal right now, Brian.

As would I, but the problem is that the Knicks can’t pay open market price until the offseason. So I think they should try offering what they can offer (4/54) and hope Mitch takes it.

Knicks can only extend Mitch at 4/54. In the offseason, they can pay him anything up to the max.

    14. I’d be happy to close at 4/54,
it’s a kind of “we know you’re good, we believe in you but please don’t make us overpay”, it’s movable and at the same time it’s a nice guarantee for Mitch, it’s generations’ changing money (as a compare Noel has a 3/27 with a team option for the 3rd year)…

    15. There’s unusually little difference between the starters and the bench on this team. I don’t see a lot of daylight between any of the platoons except for Randall >> Obi.
1 Kemba + 1 Rose = 1 really good offensive pg (who can be hunted, needs a strong big to guard the lane, and should be on minutes restriction). When one is off the other has usually been on.
1 mitch + 1 nerlens + 1 taj = 1 really good defensive big (who fouls too much, and needs a good lob from a pg to score, except taj if he’s got a good match up). Still too early to worry about mitch IMO.
RJ and Burks and Fournier are pretty exchangeable – good defenders, decent shooters/shot creators and facilitators. Though if RJ keeps up his recent play that won’t remain true.
IQ is almost as much of a question mark as Deuce and Grimes at this point, but at least you’ll get energetic harassing man D from any of them.
      Jericho is a fun cigar.

    16. Knicks can only extend Mitch at 4/54. In the offseason, they can pay him anything up to the max.

Because we have Bird rights? Got it. Yeah, I’d rather extend him than re-sign in off-season for potentially more. 4/54 should be moveable unless his game totally craters.

    17. If only the Mitchophiles here were GMs of Sixers or Wizards, we could trade him straight up for Simmons or Beal

    18. The IQ, RJ, Rose, Randle, Noel lineup had a lot of synergy last night. I enjoyed watching them.

    19. Z-man:
If only the Mitchophiles here were GMs of Sixers or Wizards, we could trade him straight up for Simmons or Beal

Do you think that would be enough of a return for Mitch?

    20. I hate to be the warmonger but is this the day Z-man and DRed go at it over Mitch’s value?

One think’s he’s garbage, the other thinks he’s good. Can the battle of the KB titans still be avoided? Is there still hope for peace in the middle east, err, Midtown New York?

Let’s go friends, fight it out!

For the record most of Mitch’s advanced numbers (vorp, bpm and ws48) are in decline over the past 3 years. His TS otoh this year is so far insanely good.

    21. yeah, i’m not feeling so rushed to sign mitch at the moment…the weight thing is an issue, he’s young and he can easily get even bigger…i have a feeling, bigger mitch won’t equal healthier, more injury free mitch…

i know just one game, but, butter stumps made a very strong case to be our starting center in his first time on the court in a while…taj does what taj does…it’ll be interesting to see how many games mitch closes throughout the year…

nerlens blocking folks’ shots, changes the game…

We should probably draft 2 more centers next year just to be safe. What do you think?

    23. The Knicks have the #2 offensive rating in the league so maybe they don’t need to tweak a whole lot, but it seems like they should be looking to get Mitch a few lobs per game. His usage is creeping down to zero.

    24. i don’t know dude, he was out all year, he did something different in the off-season, for a big guy already, and bulked…

he not even averaging 4 fga per game…his numbers aren’t that great right now…he’s got like 5 months before the trade deadline, we’ll learn more between now and then…

my hope for either sims or simms to hang around for another season or so are small…

    25. Ingmarrr that’s an exaggeration…DRed thinks Mitch is way better than Nerlens and I think they are mostly the same player with minor differences. Mitch has physical advantages but is a relatively low IQ player. Nerlens does more winning things that don’t show up in the box score.

My main issue with the Mitch love is that he hasn’t gotten one iota better than who he was as a rookie. He’s an injury-prone low IQ player who is putting up mediocre stats.

    26. random basketball thought…

was watching the suns/rockets play the other night, was interested to see jalen green (now, he needs to gain the 20 pounds mitch needs to lose) – but, the only thing you could really notice watching the game was how crazy bouncy and fun it was to watch kevin porter jr play with the ball in his hand…

he’s pretty much a ghost in every other aspect out on the court, but man is he fun to watch go at the hoop…

also, i’m not getting the christian wood love…he sorta looks like jared jeffries’ clone, but – unlike jeffries, he seems to really hunt stats out on the court, granted he’s out there with green and porter, so he has to be aggressive, but, not very impressive…

I only watched the first quarter, but there were several failed lob attempts to Mitch. We’re trying. It doesn’t always work, even with his huge catch radius and great hands.

    28. Alan: I only watched the first quarter, but there were several failed lob attempts to Mitch. We’re trying. It doesn’t always work, even with his huge catch radius and great hands.

Yes. And they failed because the Bucks were looking for the lob and defended it well. Other teams are going to look for it too. It would help if Mitch had another way to score.

    29. If Mitch is gonna have like a 7.5 USG% we might want to stop saying that Mitch is a better offensive player than Noel. Dude takes a FGA once like every 25 minutes.

    30. JK47:

He going to have his games where they aren’t defending the P&R well or he’s dominating on the offensive boards, but against really good defensive teams in the playoffs they’ll be able to take him out of most games.

    31. I just got back from my 25 year high school reunion. They gave us a tour of the new campus, which now includes The Dolan Family Science, Technology, and Research Center.

At least he didn’t take over the music program.

    32. Not sure what the takeaway from the final few minutes of the Heat/Jazz game is. Is it that nobody wants to be taken seriously as a title contender?

    33. I’m watching some of Mavs and Celtics. It’s really hard to pick someone to root for

    34. Since you mentioned Frank I looked at his stats and coming into tonight his TS% was a whopping 45%! But he’s having a big game vs Boston, 5 pts on 2 for 3 shooting so he’s on a roll right now.

    35. Anytime a player can score 5pts, you know they’re having a great game /s

And for those Frank fans who swear his value is in plus-minus, Frank was a team trailing -7

    36. Early Bird:

When Mitch scores 5 points on 3 shots we write sonnets about him…

    37. Guys, the Celtics lost on a brutal buzzer beater. And someone else is running a marathon tmw. Can’t we all just enjoy this?

    38. I mean absolutely zero disrespect to Luka as, again, that was a hell of a shot, but I don’t know if I’m thrilled with some of this talk about how clutch he is when the dude shoots at the end of the game every time. Yes, sometimes they go in, but way more than often they do not.

The point of the game is not to have to need to hit a buzzer beater! :-)
