Knicks Morning News (2021.10.26)

  • I have 4 tickets to tonight’s game vs Philly I can’t use. (Wife and eldest child have an event.) I dropped the price for tonight’s tickets to $280 for a foursome, or $150 a pair. Hoping to get rid of them, since I can’t even attend, and it’s cheaper than what I see on StubHub. (Most of 200 level is $80-$120 per ticket.)

    1. In case you’re scrolling straight to the comments, guys, Mike K is selling his tickets to tonight’s game. Top link.

    2. Z-man:
Teams are still figuring it out, so I would expect that the second 10 games will be a lot different than the first 10 games

The trick is figuring out which teams will figure it out.

    3. One development after the 1st week that has really surprised me is Grimes has a more than legitimate chance to take Quickley’s spot in the rotation. And so soon to boot. I know Thibs sticks with his guys, and he appears to love Quickley. But Grimes comes into the league with better shot selection and defense than Quickley. If his shot doesn’t come around quickly(no pun intended), I would not be shocked to see Grimes in there more often than not. I hope it doesn’t happen because I love Quickley and the threat to opposing defenses he brings with his range and willingness to fire from anywhere- but I also wouldn’t be mad at it either. The 2nd unit would be a better defensive squad with Grimes in there without sacrificing much shooting. I don’t know what happened. Quickley was a good defender at Kentucky. Maybe it’s because he’s now having to guard NBA 2’s.

But..it’s early and I have faith in the kid. It’s just that Grimes is ready to step in sooner than I expected as a rotation player while Quickley is trying to get untracked.

    4. I’m also a bit worried about Quickley, Totes. He was streaky last year, too, but eye test wise he has not looked great so far. Lot of heat check shots when he’s clearly not hot, and less movement from him overall. Beyond his range, the thing that made him stand out last year was how he was constantly moving around the court on offense, whether he had the ball or not. I don’t know if the new foul rules have him spooked, or if the shooting slump has, but it’s not looking good at this particular moment.

Ironically, Mirin Fader at The Ringer published a glowing IQ profile today. Knowing how this stuff works, this was surely planned out before the preseason even began, before anyone knew it would publish in the midst of a bad stretch of play for its subject.

    5. Yeah with the caveat that it’s way too early, I’m worried about this team’s defense and hopefully Grimes can offer some solid D for 18 minutes a game.

I still like Quickley as a microwave scorer, but where does he fit? He either cuts into Rose’s minutes (not good) or pushes Grimes to sf where he is less useful. I can see why they want Quickley to become a point guard, and frankly, we might be better off just keeping him in the system and coaching him up at that position until our current PGs fall off a cliff (probably fairly soon but not this year).

    6. ess-dog: until our current PGs fall off a cliff (probably fairly soon but not this year)

It’s possible that Kemba may already be off the cliff and is now suspended in mid-air, briefly, a la Wile E. Coyote

    7. Ironically, Mirin Fader at The Ringer published a glowing IQ profile today. Knowing how this stuff works, this was surely planned out before the preseason even began, before anyone knew it would publish in the midst of a bad stretch of play for its subject.

That article had me scratching my head at a few points. Like, two of the major praise points were (1) Quickley yelling at Cal and refusing to do suicides during practice, and (2) Quickley getting pissy about a preseason crossover not making it onto SportsCenter’s Top 10.

Not necessarily condemnable, but certainly not commendable. Their inclusion in a puff piece gives me the impression that the author was grasping at straws. Luckily, whether or not an article is wack really has no bearing on his playing ability or his potential growth. Fingers crossed that he gets his mojo back soon.

    8. NBA Power Rankings, week 2
      #15 New York Knicks
      Pace: 101.3 (15) OffRtg: 111.3 (8) DefRtg: 104.9 (12) NetRtg: +6.4 (12)
Kemba Walker is 8-for-14 from 3-point range, but the Knicks have 31.3 points per 100 possessions better with him off the floor (+22.1) than they’ve been with him on the floor (-9.2). It’s early, but hey, maybe Elfrid Payton wasn’t so bad? Really, the Knicks continue to be at their best with Derrick Rose running the point. Rose has also made more than half his 3s, and his 17 attempts from beyond the arc are four more than he had in any three-game stretch last season.
The Knicks were the only team last season that ranked in the top 10 in 3-point percentage (39.2%, third) and in the bottom 10 in the percentage of their shots that came from 3-point range (34.7%, 24th). They clearly aim to change the latter aspect of that distinction, and through three games, they’ve taken more than half of their shots from beyond the arc. After shooting 41-for-99 (41%) from deep in their wins over the Celtics and Magic, they were 13-for-48 (27%) against Orlando on Sunday, missing 14 of their 16 attempts in the fourth quarter as a six-point lead became a six-point loss.
      https://www.nba.com/news/power-rankings-2021-22-week-2

It’s only 3 games, but the on/off points from Kemba is astounding. We have only 3 players with negative on/off points in the 10 man rotation, the next is Quick with -12.7 and then Mitch is almost even (-2.1).

    9. No, Elfrid Payton was that bad.

Everybody loves Kemba, but odds are very high that Kemba’s cooked. Bad move.

    10. Just to clarify, i posted NBA.com’s comment above but i not only do not commend, i strongly disagree with this part – “It’s early, but hey, maybe Elfrid Payton wasn’t so bad?”
      Elfrid Payton was bad, period.

    11. Kemba might just be in the Patty Mills category now, with his defense and age keeping him from starting or finishing games.

I still don’t think it’s a terrible deal unless you believe a Lonzo overpay was the better answer. It’s really hard to get a “great” PG on their 2nd or 3rd contract these days. Teams recognize their importance.

    12. Denis Schroeder stinks. To pick a stat he’s posted a positive BPM 0 times in his career. He’s just a guy.

    13. DRed:
Denis Schroeder stinks. To pick a stat he’s posted a positive BPM 0 times in his career. He’s just a guy.

Amen, never wanted anything to do with Schroeder.

And to pronounce Kemba cooked after 3 games is absurd also.

    14. d-mar: And to pronounce Kemba cooked after 3 games is absurd also.

Exactly. I also would like to see Kemba running the offense more, we’re again turning to only Julius having the ball and i don’t think that’s the best approach. We have several guys with the ability to make plays, we should try to balance it out more.

    15. I still think the Kemba move was a good one. 2 years at 8 million a year? He can still score and shoot 3’s and distributes the ball better than Elf, so I still think we come out on top with him over Elf. Even if his defense is bad and his numbers aren’t great, I think his overall effect on the starters will be more positive than Elf.

What I do think is an interesting debate, though, is Burks over Bullocks. Adding Kemba and Fournier along with bringing back Rose for a full season, our offense is seriously upgraded. But the defense has definitely taken a step back. Elf may not have been a good defender, but he is definitely better at this point than Kemba. And while I think Fournier will be fine on defense, Bullocks was a legitimately good defender. We still have great rim protection with Mitch and Noel and RJ seems up to the task of guarding the opposing team’s best wing, but I think we miss Bullocks.

Burks also seems kind of redundant when we have plenty of scoring and Bullocks was a good spot up 3 point shooter. Having him at the back up 3 would have made a lot of sense I think. You have Rose, IQ and Obi all able to put up points in the second unit and Bullocks would have been available for spot up 3’s with that second unit. There will be games when RJ is getting torched or the other team has two guards/wings going off and having Bullocks in the rotation would make more sense than Burks. Similar cost too.

    16. I agree that I think Kemba is a strong upgrade on offense. He may have lost his jump, but he still has a wet jumper, and a tight handle, and good passing instincts. He should be initiating more.

Where my eye test is concerned, the problem clearly is D. The snapshot in my head over and over these three games is watching Kemba chasing after his man from behind, sort of half-heartedly, as the guy weaves into the paint. And we’re not talking about CP3 or Ja here. His apparent inability to stay up on, much less in front of, his man is alarming and I’m hoping it’s focus and not just being a step slow now. And that he can get more focused with some Thibs horsewhipping.

    17. Amazing!

I admittedly know nothing about dancing, and Shump may have been making all kinds of technical mistakes I’m not aware of, but that looked pretty spectacular to me.

    18. swiftandabundant: What I do think is an interesting debate, though, is Burks over Bullocks.

Kemba was a late addition to the roster, i’m pretty sure if it was the other way around (Kemba being the first to be signed) that Leon would’ve prioritized Bullock over Burks.

    19. But also, as discussed, Burks’ contract has a team option for year three, and Bullock’s doesn’t. That may have been the tiebreaker as much as fit. Burks is also not a sieve on defense, even if he’s not as good at it as Bullock. I think we need as much off the dribble creation on offense as we can get, especially since we have a bunch of streaky offensive players. I’m fine with Burks being the guy we kept.

    20. The odds that Kemba goes through an 82 game season and then performs even decently in the playoffs are very, very low. He’s already a sunk cost to me. I was hopeful to a degree — I do definitely like him and root for him — but even that hope was tempered by orthopedic reality and past performance. Others mileage of course may vary.

Hopefully, he’ll prove me wrong. (Elfrid Payton isn’t the bar here, so I’m personally not interested in whether Kemba is better than Elfrid Payton.)

    21. I think Bullock over Burks is a legitimate take(Fournier will be a straight upgrade over Bullock Imo). We have plenty of playmaking and lack perimeter D outside of RJ even tho Bullocks D is overrated. I dont think Burks defense that much worse than Bullock on the other hand

I just hope Grimes gets his opportunity at some point for major minutes he could replicate and probably surpass what Bullock gave us.

    22. 1. Rose IS that good.

      2. I loved the selection of Quick last year. I’m not worried about a few bad games shooting, but I always thought his form was a little odd, if not bad. His shot comes from very low and it just doesn’t look like good form to me even when it’s going in.

      3. Bullock vs. Burks is an interesting debate. I like Burks offensive versatility. He can play some PG in an emergency if we have some injuries (like Rose and Kemba both out). On the flip side, if you are adding Kemba and Fournier, offense should be less of a priority than defense. That argues for keeping Bullock.

      4. Kemba may have always been a defensive liability, but he’s certainly a bigger one now since his knee went bad and he hit his 30s. I’m not that worried about his offense, but since I prefer a top defense if he’s too much of a liability Thibs will have some interesting decisions to make.

Good test tonight if Embiid plays.

    23. On/Off are particularly mean to Kemba because Derrick Rose has been god-like the first few games. But the opponent’s offensive rating also skyrockets when Kemba is on the floor. I want to be patient, but the early returns statistically and by the eye test are pretty damning.

Randle is shooting .292 from 3, RJ is shooting .211 from 3, Obi is shooting .200 from 3. Nobody is freaking out about them, let’s not freak out about IQ’s 3pt shooting. 3pt shooting is high variance.

Do freak out about IQ’s FT rate and Obi’s inability to rebound. Rebounding is not high variance and Obi already sucked at it before committing to the break early.

Hope Noel comes back and locks down the defense/covers up Kemba’s flaws. If not, Deuce is waiting and Randle runs the offense anyways.

    24. RE: Kemba
I think it’s important to remember 2 things:
      1. It’s early
      2. Julius hasn’t developed chemistry with him yet.

The thing about Kemba is you have to give him enough rope to be who he is. And even with two really good PG’s the ball is in Julius’ hands way too much. And that’s why he turns the ball over so much. I cringe every time I see him bring the ball up the court. For a PF he has a great handle and can initiate offense. But not as much as he does now. If Elfrid was still manning the PG spot- I’d understand. But dude you gotta let Kemba play his role on this team. It’s great that he clicked with Fournier so quickly..but now we need him to click with Kemba. He trusts Rose, and sometimes Rose just says “here dog..imma let you do this one”. I’m ok with that to an extent. But over his career, Kemba has been a great ballhandler, a great threat in PnR situations, and a good decision maker- just like Rose. I just think..or hope..that the Kemba we see now is the result of the chemistry not being quite there. It’s gonna take adjustment and sacrifice from both Julius and Kemba- and they’re gonna have to work at it. I don’t think either of them are selfish players, so at some point it should work out.

Now..if we’re into Dec-Jan and the 2 haven’t meshed by then, we will have an actual issue. But now is the absolute best time during the season for those 2 to work the kinks out

    25. Also, Orlando is the worst team in the league this year and Boston has played terribly. It’s early, but this might not be our year.

    26. Offensively Kemba was rather significantly better than Schroeder last year, even while dealing with his injuries. I suppose it’s possible if Kemba declines further he could fall below Schroeder level on that end, but it’s way too early to say that has happened.

I won’t say I’ve scouted Schroeder extensively on defense but while I’m sure he’s better than current Kemba, neither his reputation nor his numbers suggest he’d make a meaningful difference on that end either.

Kemba’s upside over Schroeder’s well-known mediocrity was an easy call at the time and remains so.

    27. Yeah I think there is sometimes this idea that a good PG can just come in and instantly have chemistry with his teammates. I mean, good ones do to some degree but basketball on offense is a dance and people have to get their timing down with plays. Even simple ones like the pick and roll, every player is a little different with how they set the screens, how fast they are when they roll, etc. Its a coordinated play that takes some timing and chemistry even for the best players. STAT was an amazing roll man in his prime and him and Nash were one of the best pick and roll combos ever. But when he came to the Knicks, the first few weeks of the 2010 season him and Felton were off a bit on that play. Then they got their timing down and were really good at it. And that’s just the pick and roll. I expect it to get better.

The defense is gonna be the issue though.

    28. Ok I’ve had no takers, so I’m dropping the price to $200 for the 4. or $110 for 2, tonight against Philly. I can’t go, so really don’t want to get stuck with them.

    29. I can’t go tonight, but I’ll put a blast out on my instagram. What’s the section and row?

    30. They are in section 227, row 13 (17-18) and row 14 (18-19). It’s actually a sweet spot if you like bathrooms, booze, and food. The ladies have a “secret” restroom up the stairs. Mens & Ladies are downstairs. It’s right by the staircase too.

    31. Mike, the opening game drained me such that I couldn’t abide the initial price but I’ll take you up on all 4 on that one. I emailed you!

    32. I’m ok with that to an extent. But over his career, Kemba has been a great ballhandler, a great threat in PnR situations, and a good decision maker- just like Rose.

this is perfect totes…granted i haven’t watched a full game yet, but – that sounds spot on…

why in the world is julius’ usage up four points 3 games in…

    33. Obviously very early days but Fred Katz had a note in his most recent piece about Kemba only having one make in the paint so far through three games. The dramatic reduction in his paint attempts was the big statistical marker of his waning health the last couple years; he was consistently at 25-30% of his FGA in Charlotte and fell to less than 13% last year, so far he’s right in line with that 13% figure again. Even a physically limited Kemba was pretty effective offensively last year so I’d still bet heavily on him playing better than he has, but just an interesting statistical marker to keep an eye on.

    34. Kemba can still shoot, and he can still run a pick and roll, which he did beautifully with Mitch early in Sunday’s game. We got neither of those things from our starting point guard last year. He may be cooked. His game may have to evolve. Or it may just be growing pains. I’m going to give him some time.

    35. folks he’s played 41 minutes let’s not be too hasty

I don’t think it’s the 41 minutes that has people spooked. He really tailed off last season (even with a good stretch of ball when he teamed up with Rose), and was a zero in the playoffs. I’m sure if I’m wrong ptmilo will smack me down, but by my eyes it seemed like the floater stopped being effective and he stopped getting to the line. Without those two things, he looks a lot like the player djphan projected him to be.

Yeah, it’s not Burks over Bullock if Bullock wouldn’t take the deal that Burks did.

    37. With IQ, it’s not just the 41 regular season minutes, but how bad he looked in the preseason, and how poorly he shot the ball in Vegas, even if he did other things well. Factor in the playoffs, and his shooting slump has been going on for a while now.

    38. Meanwhile, 5 minutes with 2 TO and nothing else for Rokas in today’s Euroleague contest.
As I wrote the other day, he needs some seasoning while Rose and Kemba are entrenched at PG…

    39. Athletic has a long piece about Mobley’s start to the season. Apparently the defense is for real.

      https://theathletic.com/2911739/2021/10/25/mobley-tops-impressive-rookie-class-scouting-overtime-elite-and-more-hollingers-week-that-was/?source=nbatw

“Mind you, it’s not like Mobley was doing this against some random scrub either – Young is one of the best offensive players in the league. His tape from the first two games supports the idea that this wasn’t a fluke. He can become one of the best defensive players in the league, quickly.”

    40. thenoblefacehumper: Mike, the opening game drained me such that I couldn’t abide the initial price but I’ll take you up on all 4 on that one. I emailed you!

That’s nice of you, Noble. Oh, but wait, are you taking a Celtics fan to the Garden again? LOL

    41. I’m a little pessimist for tonight’s game. Anyone with this feeling, or is it just me?

    42. cybersoze:
I’m a little pessimist for tonight’s game. Anyone with this feeling, or is it just me?

For me it’s all about E4. He was automatic in the first two games and that gave us balance with repeatable success by design. Last game he just didn’t have it, so we were just chucking.

Since I don’t know Fournier very well, I’m hoping he’s “normally” automatic.

    43. cybersoze:
I’m a little pessimist for tonight’s game. Anyone with this feeling, or is it just me?

given that we have not beaten them in the regular season since 2017…I would say you’re justified in your pessimism…

    44. I enjoyed the argument re Mitch being better overall than Noel, but the simple fact is despite the butter stumps Noel is a DAMN fine defender, and I do think the team suffers for his absence.

I love Taj and the energy he brings, but he’s no Noel on D.
