    1. Charlotte crushed them though. 30 for Miles. Oubre went off too. Maybe they are going to good this year. Lamelo looks the part.

I wouldn’t mind this, since it would in-incinerate the pick Charlotte owes us.

    2. mobley and barnes have both looked fantastic. charlotte can improve a lot by adding just a little rim protection.

    3. I missed most of the game. How did Sims look? Any better than I’m the opener?

Also glad IQ shot well last night. Was starting to worry.

    4. Tommy Beer:

The Knicks have made 41 three-pointers this season. No other team in the NBA has made more than 32.

Total 3-point attempts thru the first two games of the season:
      Knicks: 99
      Rockets: 71
      Nets: 71
      Warriors: 70

Lol, I kinda think the FO would immediately in-in-incinerate it. I don’t think they want it to convert for a couple years.

    7. My daughter survived the whole Lion King without any trauma and then collapsed in tears because I suggested she share a glow stick with a kid who didn’t have one. Bad beat

this had me smiling, thanks owen…

    8. from the discarded pilot script for: Geo Knows Best:

was having a convo with one of the boys reference being a bit of a disruptive influence in the classroom…trying to emphasize the importance of education, the looming 18 year old period when he needs to have a plan and especially how uncool it is for him to make his teachers day harder than it should have to be…trying to get him to understand she’s just another person doing a job and trying to feed her family…

took a while, but, after some time it seemed like he was starting to get the point…

I soooooooooooo wanted to end the conversation with: Just don’t be such a cunt to your teacher., a la fan fave Billy the Butcher…

somehow I was able to maintain enough restraint to substitute “jerk” for “cunt” :)

    9. Already laughed with the Thibod’Antoni, 7 seconds or Obi, and the in-in-in-in-incineration of picks! :D

    10. About the game, i think 4 of the starters played OK, although Julius has to lower the TOs and Mitch has to control the fouls (maybe just desire to do a lot, because last year he was almost never in foul trouble).
And then there’s Kemba, i know it’s only 2 games, so let’s wait for a proper sample size, but i have to admit i assumed he would be lighting it up early on and then would fade a little because of the season’s wear and tear. But now i just hope this is going to be the opposite, start slow and then grow into his role. Because if that’s not the case, we’ll be in trouble at PG.

    11. bit of irony to the story here being – keeping it raw is actually a very effective communication style with his younger brother…the youngest, unlike how his older brother and sister acted when they were younger – tends to act up in public, so once we get back in to our car things can get a little spicey…

to his credit though, he handles it, doesn’t take it too personal (if I look at the other two even disappovely they tend to shut down a while) and actually gets the point, at least for the moment…

he’s about to turn 8 and acts like a grumpy old crazy man at times…we get along pretty well…

ah, some of the many joys of parenting…

    12. Thibs talks about taking the right three ball shots and we’re getting them, it seems. The only ugly ones that I’ve seen have been from IQ and, hopefully, he’ll get the message too.

    13. The 2nd team (without Noel/Taj) played well also, but DRose was magnificent. He’s playing really well, but better not change his role. Obi had a very good game, Burks is Burks, and Quick played like in the first game (meaning he didn’t play well) but it was very encouraging to see him shoot well again. Let’s hope this will bring his confidence back.
It was nice to give time to all the players, and i start with Sims, he looked better but granted it was ORL on the other side, we’ll need more games, Grimes played just like in preseason, i think he’ll be ready when his number is called, and Deuce looked OK but the shots didn’t went in, maybe next time.

    14. geo: he’s about to turn 8 and acts like a grumpy old crazy man at times…we get along pretty well…

My youngest is 15, and i have to say i don’t envy you! :P
“Oh, thanks cyber! You’re very supportive!” LOL

    15. Things we know and things we still don’t know (Raven Version, feel free to violently disagree):

Randle being an all-star (last year version) is for real.

Randle bogarting that joint and throwing the ball away is also for real. I figure these are correctable and Thibs can beat it into his brain that he now has teammates he can trust. We’ll see.

Evan is a Slytherin. In a good way. First half of the first game I kept thinking “He’s slithering to the hoop” over and over. He’s so smooth and slippery on his drives, and he gets to the rim every time. Then I looked up Slytherin and it says ‘cunning and resourceful,’ which totally works.

IQ blows hot and cold. He was that way most of last year, and he’s that way just two games into this year. I’d like to see him be more consistent on the good side of things, but he’s still my fan fave even being inconsistent.

Obi is for real. Nuff said.

Mitch is for real, but makes me nervous. Fingers crossed he just needs to get in better shape, and doesn’t break in the process.

We don’t know what we have yet in Kemba. Full stop. We just don’t. Time will tell.

Ditto with RJ. Is he MIA for long stretches due to taking on the top D role? Is he just taking some time getting things together (like last year)? Is it more weapons so less RJ? This will be an interesting story line to track.

    16. Raven: Mitch is for real, but makes me nervous. Fingers crossed he just needs to get in better shape, and doesn’t break in the process.

I was surprised how often Mitch ended up in the floor. I don’t remember that from last year. That’s a tall tree falling down like that over and over.

    17. Our 2nd unit reminds me of the old Hubie Brown days…not sure there a many teams that can bring in 6-10 with that talent…I assume if/when Noel comes back it will be him, obi, iq, rose and burks…with taj getting spot minutes..but if rose keeps that level up…it is solid 2nd group…

I also think if Kemba nevers reverts to form…that Fournier can deal with PG duties (a la Burks last year) and then maybe IQ…but…we’ll see…maybe Kemba is still shaking off some rust…he just looks like a shell of his ol’self…

    18. I don’t know if the Bulls will work this year, but next year they’ll be able to add some back of the rotation talent… assuming LaVine stays.

Lol, LAL. Don’t know why you’d want Westbrook taking up possessions when you have AD & LeBron. They should bench him until AD & LBJ both get injured.

Toronto sans Siakim destroyed the Celtics last night, isn’t Boston supposed to be better than us?

    19. Good game yesterday, leaving no hope to a bad team, easy win. Now please do an encore sunday.
      My grades:

      Randle B
It’s Orlando, he had 4 bad turnover, but he’s solid as a rock (10 Reb, 7 Ast) e when the Magic tried to get close in the third he went to work and restore order.

      Robinson C-
Not explosive as usual, to be seen if it’s rust or the new weight.

      Walker C-
I’m not as hard on him as others, his 3 triples helped us get separation, we never look back. Anyway we expect more from him.

      Fournier B
Good first half, help build the 30 point halftime lead. His 3-level offense give us a different feel on offense. His two-men game with Randle can become a formidable weapon.

      Barrett C-
Wet powders from long range, couple of turnovers, not the game I expected from him against a bad team. He’ll do better sunday.

      Toppin A-
Hit corners threes, run like hell, attack the basket, try his best on defense, now he must start hitting free throws. His blossoming into a real player is the best thing to happen in the first two games (with Fournier)

      Rose A
Simply perfect. 7 assists to go with 4 three pointers and no turnovers, the team run a lot with him at the helm. The change-of-pace sixth man role fit him perfectly.

      Burks A
Drilled 4 3s and dished 7 assists (!). Professional performance.

      Quickley B-
Maybe a couple of FTs got him over the slump? Let him be a poor man Lou Williams and don’t put pressure on him to become a PG, he’ll be fine.

      Sims C
Better than the first time, he rebounded well, we need to remember he’s the 58th pick.

      Grimes NG
Scored his first NBA bucket, I’m happy for him

      McBride NG
Can’t hit his shots, he’ll do it sunday.

      Knox NG
4 minutes, 1 ast, 1 TO, 1 Foul. The garbagest of the garbage time.

      Selden NG
How do they call it when you play 1 minutes and score all zeros in the boxscore? The Trillion? Well, he got the trillion.

    20. Max: McBride NG
Can’t hit his shots, he’ll do it sunday.

He was clearly desperately trying to get his first NBA points and was doing too much on his shots. I’m not worried.

Another interesting thing I’ve seen (two games in) — Mitch is finally setting real picks, not slipping them. People run into him now and it creates separation.

    21. Kemba is figuring out his new role. He’s never been anything but option #1, green light on everything. He’s not that on the Knicks.

To put it in perspective, Kemba has a 16.8% USG. His next lowest is his rookie 25.2%. Fournier has never eclipsed that mark over a full season.

I expect Kemba to take over games at some point this season, but that’s not his job for now.

(Also, Thibs uses PGs in weird ways so maybe that’s it, I don’t know it’s 2 games)

    22. Even if Kemba’s ability to drive is greatly diminished, his shooting keeps defenses honest, which opens things up for the other guys on the floor. Especially relative to the guy whose spot he took. I’m definitely in a wait and see mode.

    23. Alan:
Even if Kemba’s ability to drive is greatly diminished, his shooting keeps defenses honest, which opens things up for the other guys on the floor. Especially relative to the guy whose spot he took. I’m definitely in a wait and see mode.

Yeah, who was the last starting PG we can count on for some pick & roll threes, Jarrett Jack?

    24. Yeah, we don’t hear from Farfa in months now, i think. If i remember it well, i think he made a comment on the free agency acquisitions, like 3 months ago or something like that.

    25. My seven year old son has taken to grunting exactly like Roy Kent. It’s actually hilarious. He is in love with his teacher though so no problems there.

Kemba so far seems to be what we thought he was. Fournier is a little better. The guy who has stood out so far for me is definitely Rose. The guy is the picture of health right now and moving really well out there. By the playoffs last year he was noticeably slowing down but firing on all cylinders (until the inevitable injury I expect.)

IQ breaking out definitely very positive too.

3-0 would be a really fantastic start to the season before we match up with Philly.

    26. Yeah, Kemba can still shoot, you can’t just sag off him the way you can sag off Elf. We have four three point shooters in our starting lineup instead of three, and the results speak for themselves.

I’ll tell you one thing, this is gonna be a hell of a lot better than the 23rd ranked offense.

    27. Owen: 3-0 would be a really fantastic start to the season before we match up with Philly.

Really hope Mitch is okay, Swole Mitch vs Embiid is can’t miss TV

    28. what a team, man. I can’t even figure out if I like the starters more than the bench. Derrick Rose 3.0 is an incredible basketball player. Evan Fournier is smooth as silk. RJ & Mitch are the best homegrown players we’ve had since Mark Jackson (apologies to Owen and all the other David Lee stans). Obi & IQ could be the next two. Kemba is taking a while to get going (like last year, too) but I trust that he will have spurts this season where he dazzles us. And Julius. What a beast.

I love teams built like this.

    29. damn I didn’t realize we play Philly on Tuesday at home. The Garden’s gonna be crazy for that one.

    30. Rumor has it that Simmons has not had the vaccine, so he wouldn’t solve Brooklyn’s problem.

    31. No vaccine but Simmons does have a beautiful countertop on his kitchen island. The grain on the stone is exquisite.

    32. Thanks, Alan. That’s really stupid from Simmons, well that and the rest of his behaviour, because by not being vaccinated he’s automatically removing Lakers, Clippers, Warriors, Knicks and Nets, from the teams in which he can land!? Where does he want to go?

    33. So far it looks like the Randle/Fournier two man game is going to be the first option in most half-court sets- Fournier’s ability to put the ball on the deck makes it much more dangerous than the Randle/Bullock two man game that was pretty successful last year. Kemba’s going to get a lot of spot up threes and should have the opportunity to make plays attacking close-outs but it looks like the offense is still going to run through Randle for better or worse.

    34. Katz:

The Westchester Knicks selected former Bowling Green guard Justin Turner with the No. 4 pick in the G League draft.

No idea who this is. Unless he’s the guy from the Dodgers.

    35. Owen:
No vaccine but Simmons does have a beautiful countertop on his kitchen island. The grain on the stone is exquisite.

I’m also a big fan of his music collection. He seemed to have the seminal works of Huey Lewis and the news.

    36. cybersoze: Thanks, Alan. That’s really stupid from Simmons, well that and the rest of his behaviour, because by not being vaccinated he’s automatically removing Lakers, Clippers, Warriors, Knicks and Nets, from the teams in which he can land!? Where does he want to go?

Hilariously, he’s said that he wants to play for one of the California teams.

      Alan: Katz:

No idea who this is. Unless he’s the guy from the Dodgers.

5th year senior last year: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/justin-turner-1.html

He’s got nice counting stats and decent shooting splits. Weirdly, his FT shooting improved every year while his 3P shooting got worse.

    37. Tommy Beer:

Knicks have listed Nerlens Noel (sore left knee) as doubtful and Taj Gibson (personal) as questionable for Sunday’s game vs. the Magic.

      Small ball! Small ball!

    38. I’m not as worried about Kemba as a lot of people are. All he really needs to do is give us 15 to 20 minutes of better pg play than Payton and he’s a plus. He seems to be avoiding contact on both ends, except when trying to take charges, which is fine for now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him turn it up a notch when we really need it.

This is not our year to contend anyway. I look at Kemba, Rose, and Burks as great placeholders and mentors until the kids develop or we decide to push in our chips for Lilliard, Beal, or some other star. I really like watching the young home grown players develop. I hope we stick to this course and build a Detroit Piston-like contender.

    39. We just need like 22 minutes of non-black hole play from Kemba with the starting unit. It seems like he can still shoot and that alone allows us to play a much better brand of offense. I almost forgot what good spacing and willing passing around thr perimeter looks like, but we have those things now.

    40. JK47: It seems like he can still shoot and that alone allows us to play a much better brand of offense.

      yes

I also agree that the offense will run through Julius so our pgs won’t have gaudy assist numbers.

If yall aren’t absolutely giddy over Obi/ Mitch then you need a new anti depressant cocktail.

Watching Rose is like watching Roy Hobbs

      Early returns are awesome…

    41. I was surprised how often Mitch ended up in the floor. I don’t remember that from last year. That’s a tall tree falling down like that over and over.

that’s really sticking out like crazy…

    42. Rose A
Simply perfect. 7 assists to go with 4 three pointers and no turnovers, the team run a lot with him at the helm. The change-of-pace sixth man role fit him perfectly.

Derrick Rose 3.0 is an incredible basketball player.

Watching Rose is like watching Roy Hobbs

he needs a 6th man of the year and championship ring as a knick to complete his basketball story…

i’m going to hold out hope there’s more to come from kemba, we need him at the end of the season and playoffs mostly anyways…

good to see quik hit some shots…obi is just wow right now…

super important he plays with the second unit and to close games, but, rose is our second best player at the moment…i think evian though is about to have a career year…

    43. geo:
      costa versus vettori…as advertised…

Watched only the last round, looks like it was a hard fight, I’m happy for Marvin :-)

    44. man, the weight limit got upped on him by 20 lbs (!!!) a week prior to the fight…you know he was pissed…

costa was conditioned and performed well (didn’t have to cut 26 lbs a week prior to fighting), marvin is just a really tough guy in the cage, i mean so’s costa, the guy’s a beast, only his second lost out of fifteen fights…marvin’s mechanics/techniques are good, not great…he’s super durable and very well conditioned (which is more about health and will than anything else)…

he should fight the winner of brunson/cannonier…whoever wins from that should fight the winner of israel and whittaker, after they sign and set a date for the belt…

    45. Watching Raptors-Mavs. Porzingis just shot an airball trying to post up OG Anunoby and then flagrantly fouled him out of frustration.

I really, really hope Kidd remains their coach next year when we have their pick again.

    46. How boring a rainy Saturday is it? Watching Atlanta getting thumped by Cleveland, which is not easy to do (get thumped by Cleveland, and watch such a game). There’s time left, but it’s nice to see Atlanta vulnerable.

    47. Cleveland is probably going to be a bad team but they’re more talented than some of the other bottom-feeding teams in the league. They have some competent veterans mixed in with a couple of relatively young guys who are already developed a little and then some recent lottery picks who are still very green. They look like a pretty scrappy little team to me.

    48. The first few weeks of the season are always crazy…

Atlanta with an awful shooting night, I’m not gonna cry on a Trae’s bad game,
Rubio played very well, Mobley too.

    49. I’m exploring classic games the NBA has available online and found the Christmas day game against the Celtics from Ewing’s rookie year. It’s a great game and it’s so fun to watch Ewing before his knees fucked up his career.

    50. How boring a rainy Saturday is it?

tried watching black widow last night, only made it through about 15 to 20 minutes, a bit disappointed, but oh well…

saw venom/carnage with the boys this morning, loved it…like the first movie, not a very good movie though…

what i enjoyed most was the eddie brock/venom dialogue…venom is sort of like mania to the joker’s melancholy, i got a soft spot for that kind of stuff…tom hardy is an excellent actor, big fan of stephen graham since snatch and boardwalk empire…talk about using restraint, amazing that they were able to get that material to a pg13 rating…

i’ve never really read many if any carnage stories before…i see he made some appearances in the ultimate spiderman comics…

boys are reaching that age where they’re spending a bunch of time outside now with their friends…their sister never really did this at the same age…the house is quieter, but, spending time now listening for them and walking around outside to check in on them…

    51. So far KP is 5 for 17 for 14 points although he does have nine rebounds while THJ is 9 for 16 for 25 points including 7 for 11 from three. Soon Dallas fans are going to be calling it the Hardaway trade instead of the Porzingis trade.

    52. Knick fan not in NJ:

      On reddit, they already do!

    53. Kings of Comedy only on Netflix until the end of the month. Must be cancelling them instead of Chappelle.

    54. I liked Mobley the most in this draft and he is looking good.

Anthony Edwards might end up being one of my biggest L’s.

    55. pepper: was just listening to joe strummer…immediately thought “clash fan would be proud of me”…

I’m nearly brought to tears every time I play his take on Redemption Song. Believe it or not, I’ve got Assembly but still haven’t taken the shrink off to play it.

Also love his song “Johnny Appleseed” that he did with the Mescaleros. A true talent.

Yeah, Mick was the better tunesmith, but Joe was the lyricist, frontman, brains, heart, soul, etc. of The Clash. I’m glad they made up and eventually shared the same stage on one occasion before Joe died.

I got all the Mescaleros stuff as they came out, and though the albums were pretty uneven, I enjoyed Strummer’s second act in life. F Scott was wrong about that.

    60. I wonder when the “we passed on Obi Toppin to draft Killian Hayes” lament will start in Detroit…

Everyone still so sure they’d prefer Halibuteon over Obi? I’m seeing Obi more and more as a late bloomer who’s just going to keep getting better in the next 2-3 years. He seems to have overcome a huge hurdle by being a passable defensive large wing. Obviously we need to see more, but if he can hold his own on D, he could wind up being a heck of a player. Halibuteon is looking like he could improve as well, but where does he top out? At the very least, it’s a valid comparison right now, which is more than most of us thought in year 1…

    61. ***one of my good friends was real good friends with mick jones…***

I typically don’t like to name drop my friends, but it’s saturday night and I’m home alone reading Knickerblogger, so I’ll go ahead and say what I’ve been wanting to say here for a while now: I’ve recently become friends with a member of the Straight Shot. It’s really quite exciting. I’m basically just a local gig away from entering the Inner Circle y’all have only imagined in your deepest, darkest nightmares, haha.

    62. Z-man: Everyone still so sure they’d prefer Halibuteon over Obi?

Yeah, last year it looked for a moment that we were looking at the abyss of another Knox-like pick. However, I still contend that part of the appeal of drafting Haliburton was to get a PG, which are usually harder to come by than PFs. Since then we have managed by getting Rose and now Kemba, but they are clearly not long-term solutions. We will have more opportunities to sign a PG in the future, but they are going to be scarce.

      coincidence…perhaps…

    64. We’re going 3-0 as the Bulls,
two games against Orlando for us, two against Detroit sans Cade for them, unbalanced schedule.
      Pound the scrubs!

      P.S. Good morning Geo!

Poor guy/girl, must have been a really awful person in the past life! LOL

It’s a great point (npi). I still have questions of whether Hali is an ideal long-term solution to that position, i.e better that what we can get either as a reasonably priced free agent or via a mid to late first round pick. It’s really a great capologist question, and the answer is all about Hali’s percieved ceiling. I don’t see a max player there…more like a Brogdan-level guy at best.

Another consideration is Thibs’ installation of a modern offense and experimentation with Julius and Obi sharing the court. There again it becomes a matter of Obi’s ceiling. We are fortunate to have two exceptional rim-running rim protectors that aren’t necessarily liabilities when teams go small, and maybe are assets sometimes. But running Obi out there is a whole different look, and maybe a better look than Hali could provide this specific team.

Definitely something to keep an eye on.

One other thing is perceived trade value. Obi’s gotta be closing that gap…not that we should trade him…he’s an eminently lovable local product…but does Hali net more in a trade than Obi? The answer is probably still yes but not by nearly as much as last year.
