    1. Be nice if both Mitch and Noel play tonight. But on nights when both of those dudes can go, what do we do with Taj Gibson, aka the greatest living NBA player? Does he go back to sitting on the bench until someone’s hurt? Eat into Obi’s minutes? Play situationally against teams where we don’t need a shotblocker at the 5?

    2. Perhaps just run Taj out there as a big shooting guard? I would have absolutely no problem with that given the way his handle and shot look so far.

I love his jersey number. I didn’t realize it was an homage to Fort Green but that is awesome. Blood in the ground has a whole different resonance when things are going well.

    3. Obviously, Taj is being groomed for a microwave role. Who better to provide a shot in the arm (probably an unfortunate turn of phrase there) off the bench when the first team offense bogs down.

    4. I remember Kurt Thomas having a bit of a late career renaissance offensively. He’s probably the guy who reminds me the most of Taj and I recall him showing a few extra gears and getting paid as a result. I remember feeling pretty torn about whether it made him a more effective player. Don’t know if Taj will have a similar arc but its an excellent new comedy bit for this season.

    5. All of these Taj ideas sound good, guys. Maybe he should be the emergency point guard on the nights when Rose or Walker are out?

    6. And maybe on days where we don’t have games he can scout the G League to find future Taj’s

    7. Owen:
Searching “it’s crazy but it might just work gifs”……

Still waiting for Mike K to give me gif-posting powers. Sigh…

    8. Alan: Be nice if both Mitch and Noel play tonight.

I don’t ask for so much, i’d be happy if we have one of the two available. Both out would be a bummer for the season opener preparation.

    9. Over/under on Deuce & Grimey’s combined minutes tonight: 6

Of course, I’m betting the under.

    10. Towards the win predictions does anyone have the patience to search, and compare this blog’s average number of predicted wins to Vegas over under, to the actual result?

I think we’ve been doing this for several years already, could be fun to track relationship with reality.

    11. Second question: if both are at full health, does anyone have a preference on which shot blocking pogo stick starts and which plays with the bench mob? Their skill sets are similar but not identical, with Mitch adding a vertical dimension to the offense that Butterfingers Noel can’t, but with Noel a slightly more well-rounded defender at this point and at least a minor threat to shoot while not directly at the hoop. Does one fit better with Randle/RJ/Kemba/Fournier and the other better with Toppin/Burks/IQ/Rose, or does it not much matter?

    12. I think the answer to the second question depends what Obi brings to the table this season, as much as any other factor. But it probably doesn’t matter that much who starts (which is a good thing).

    13. Although things aren’t going according to plan, i’m still on team Mitch, so i’d always be in favor of him starting. But when reading “Does one fit better with Randle/RJ/Kemba/Fournier and the other better with Toppin/Burks/IQ/Rose” i stopped to think about it and now i guess it’s best that Noel starts, because he has a problem catching the ball and Kemba is much better at assisting guys than DRose.

    14. I think you gotta start Noel at least to start the season since he has been the starting center now since halfway through last season. We gotta see how Mitch looks and holds up. If he’s catching fire by the spring, maybe you switch them.

    15. Good points by all three of you. Obi and Mitch aren’t redundant offensively, but Obi provides a lob threat for the bench mob that the starting unit would lack without Mitch in it. At the same time, Mitch’s catch radius provides more room for error from Rose and/or IQ, while you might want to stick Noel with the best pure passer on the roster. Plus Noel has for the moment earned the job.

So I guess the answer is start Noel, bring Mitch off the bench and then see how both are playing after a few weeks? The only danger in that approach is if Mitch — playing for the kind of contract Noel already has — pouts at being a reserve and causes problems.

    16. So yours truly has a small Knicks-related problem. I’m not an impulsive person, but I did an impulsive thing — I bought Knicks half-season tickets. Mind you I can’t actually afford the price of a small used car I paid for them. But my thinking was that I could sell all but one of them, and either break even or make enough to take the family to a single game. I had consulted a few people prior who assured me this was completely possible, and that I shouldn’t worry.

Fast forward and I’ve yet to be able to sell any of the tickets. I’ve tried to sell the next 3-4 games, and all but 1 game (Philly) are selling below the cost I paid for them. I do have a few “big games,” but putting it all in a spreadsheet at what they’re selling for now, it doesn’t seem I’ll come close to breaking even. I’m wondering since they’re not great seats (200s) that maybe I bit off more than I could chew.

I’m guessing closer to the games, the ticket price will go up, but I’m worried that it’s not the case. Does anyone have experience with this? I could use someone talking me off the ledge.

    17. Mike – i feel your pain.

Been a season ticket holder forever and a major Stub Hub seller as well. I was always able to come close to breaking even by selling the shit games at a discount and the primo games at a premium ( and of course attending some games as well)

This year it’s a whole new ballgame, and I think the Delta variant is the big reason. Tourists and hotel guests are normally big buyers (I’ve sat next to them many times) and this year there are obviously way less of them. Plus a general hesitancy to be with large crowds.

So this could be a rough year for reselling, but all I can say is if the Knicks are good and things get back to “normal” I think the landscape will start to improve maybe by 2022.

      Hope that helps!

    18. I’m expecting Noel to be the starter while Mitch is eased in (he didn’t play since march), then a reassessment after 10-15 games.

Hope Mitch doesn’t pout, it’s a sign of immaturity, it would look bad and doesn’t help with his next contract (every GM in the league is worried about is “maturity”).

P.S. I’ll not be surprised if they equally share playing time all season long, I’m wondering how all this can fit with Taj (I don’t want him to chew on Obi’s minutes).

    19. I agree. Obviously, given my avatar.

He is also more likely to be pissed off by not starting. And pissing him off has more downside.

    20. Mike K, you will not make your money back in increments. You will make a disproportionate amount of it selling the best tickets you have.

Demand is low early in the season. Plan to go to as many of those games as possible. And don’t expect to sell your tickets too far in advance. A lot of them will be bought same day or within a day or two.

Try to avoid selling on stubhub bc they take an arm and a leg out. But use them as a benchmark for pricing. I would recommend posting here first, as you have a lot of people who would buy from you.

    21. First of all, THANK YOU MIKE! I promise not to overuse this.

Second, this Tommy Beer article suggests the Knicks are the second most in-demand NBA team on StubHub this season. So my hope is that you’ll be able to unload all the tickets as games get closer. You may have to take a loss on some early ones, but can hopefully make it back and then some as the season moves along and if the team remains good.

Superpowers for everybody? “And when everyone’s Super… no one will be!” (Syndrome, from The Incredibles)

Yeah, to be clear, I was not asking for the rest of you uncultured heathens to have gif inserting powers. Just me!

    25. Mike K, I can tell you from Rangers ST experience (and a boatload of experience with the Knicks and stubhub) that buying season tickets or partial plans has to “work” for reasons other than economic or you’re better off just buying off Stubhub or Ticketmaster when you feel the urge to go. Even with the ridiculous fees you have to pay SH or TM, you’re probably better off.

Here’s how I rationalize Rangers’ STs:

      1. Playoffs. Unfortunately, the resale market in the past has been quite a bit higher for the Rangers than for the Knicks when it comes to the playoffs. Game 7 of the 2015 quarterfinals against the Capitals, you literally couldn’t get into the Garden for less than $1,000. I’ve never seen anything close to that for a Knicks playoff game. Even Game 7 on spec last year against the Hawks was nothing close. But the rationalization, “I want to pay face for the playoffs and have my seats” can work, and it does for me. Is it better economically? Probably not.

      2. Premium games locked in. I have the Rangers premium plan. Last night was my first game. There is a non-economic benefit, at least to me, to just know in advance when I’m going and not have to decide and deal with getting tickets. While you can probably do better economically just going game by game, there is a hassle factor and I often would get to the point of picking seats for a good game and then seeing the fees and getting pissed off and saying fuck it, I’m not paying those fees — and then you wind up not going to a game you’d otherwise like to go to. Still intangible, but there’s something to be said for knowing you’re paying “face” and not fees, which you get with STs.

With the virtually perfect efficiency in pricing, the bottom line is that teams are just not going to permit their fans to arbitrage the prices on their tickets. *They’re* going to capture that. And then they’re going to get fees tacked on if you need to bail on a game. Hope the…

    26. i had no idea most gifs are greater than 1 MB, makes sense, looks like we’ll have to make due with meme’s…time to work on my meme game :)

hmmmmm, it seems there’s a bit of a trick to increase the size and have the image appear on a mobile device…

    27. I hate Stubhub with a passion, but unfortunately they attract the highest number of buyers. Their customer service is abysmal, the other day I was on hold for 2 hours and the guy who eventually picked up had screaming children in the background

They also don’t allow you to see sold tickets anymore, claiming that competitors were using that info nefariously. That was always a big reason to use Stubhub – being able to see recent sales was incredibly important in terms of pricing your tix.

They deserve to go out of business honestly…

    28. oh al, i was kind of hoping we were gonna get another pic of you riding the subway with them eyes wide open and totally prepared for any incursion in to your personal space :P

      Testing a potential gif workaround in 3… 2… 1…
UPDATE: Well, nertz. That didn’t work.

Thibs smiling? How could that work? The system thought it was fake! LOL

    30. you ever have one of those months where like the 7 most important things are all scheduled at the same time?

I am sextuple booked after work on October 20. And now I just realized that’s opening night, too.

    33. Huh – the spurs cutting bait on a #19 pick is likely not a good sign.
      His stats are pretty awful.

    34. I liked Samanic as a draft prospect, but since then i never followed his play/stats. Either way, since we cut Vildoza, we needed a new Luka. Problem solved. :D

    35. @TommyBeer
A lot to like about this signing.

Samanic, who is still just 21 years old, averaged:
      21.8 points,
      11.3 rebounds,
      2.2 assists and
1.8 made 3PT’s in the G League last season.

He needs to improve his offensive efficiency. He shot just 44% from the floor and 29.7% from downtown.

Meanwhile, this is an interesting breakdown of what went wrong for him with the Spurs. Seems like effort/motor are an issue, which we’ve already dealt with regarding Knox, but he has a greater and more varied skillset than Knox. And it’s a two-way. Wouldn’t be awful to see what the G-League staff can do with him.

    36. GIF test to help Alan and Geo.
[UPDATE] Checked if the img src command was working now, with the changes on the editor, but still isn’t. So i’m not of great help. :P

    37. Also, with an open 15th roster spot and both two-way spots filled, I wonder if Aamir Simms gets our 15th spot, and/or if we tear up Jericho Sims’ two-way deal and give him a real contract and sign Aamir to the other two-way.

    38. @IanBegley
Knicks are currently listing Mitchell Robinson as questionable for tonight’s game against Washington.

Worth a look, but hate to see a problem being effort. Maybe a maturity light bulb turns on for him sometime soon and he’ll stop giving up on plays and sulking when adversity strikes.

    40. Its been awhile since I was a season ticket holder but I was only able to do it with my buddy by selling more than half of the games including most of the big games. We made bank in 2010,2011 (thanks linsanity) and in 2012. We broke even in 2013 and then I got out. My buddy has lost money every season since then.

I think if things were completely normal you would most definitely break even and maybe even make money. But delta is the big question mark. I can tell you as someone who works in live event ticketing, right now 30 percent or more of tickets are sold right before the event bc people are willing to go out but want to wait until the last minute.

So I would say…hang in there? You will lose money on some games and accepting that is part of it. A big thing is that you do kind of have to keep an eye on Stubhub constantly and adjust your prices accordingly. This will mean you lower prices but also raise them when you notice certain games selling really well.

Christmas game you should be able to sell. Weekend games/Friday nights you should be able to sell at a decent price even if the team isn’t great. Its not ALWAYS about the opponent and how good they are but the better the opponent, the more likely you are to make money. But being on the weekends/Friday night also really helps.

The last thing I will say is that even during those good seasons when we made a profit, we almost always lost money on the games earlier in the season. Casual NBA fans don’t really get invested until at least Christmas and the casual fan is where you will make money reselling tickets. So you gotta hope the Knicks start the season out hot and build momentum going into Feb, March…cause that is when you will make the most money.

Save the weeknight games for yourself. Sell the weekends and the biggest opponents (NETS, Lakers will be big) and try to sell more of the later part of the season. Also, be sure to treat yourself with one really good game for yourself each…

    41. There was a 76ers game in 2011/2012 that was right after Linsanity. We sold section 200 seats for like $600 each and the Knicks got destroyed in that game. I remember my buddy and I just thought “man those people who bought our tickets must have been pissed.”

    42. cybersoze: I liked Samanic as a draft prospect, but since then i never followed his play/stats. Either way, since we cut Vildoza, we needed a new Luka. Problem solved. :D

Luka solves another problem we had… NOW WE HAVE A PICK #19 ON THE ROSTER! No more incinerating threads, please! :P

    43. oh well, probably for the best soze, time to get lost in work…ugh, between interviewing for a new role and having shrinks about to poke in my brain – waaaaay too much self reflection lately…i feel like i’m in some kind of introspection purgatory…

i’m already ready to pass go :)

    44. The Spurs’ reputation with late first rounders and players development has taken a small hit in recent years, but it will crater if we can extract something out of Samanic when they cannot.

Decent flyer, he’s worth a shot.

    45. Wait..I gotta ask..

Did anyone see Marbury call Stephen A out about his take on Kyrie? HE SAID WAYHOW AGAIN!! lololololol

      That is all..

      Carry on.

    46. There’s no need to rush Taj into the lineup. He was here long before Randle came into the league and he’ll be here long after Grimes, Deuce, and RJ retire. He’ll be the centerpiece on the Knicks 2073 championship run.

    47. d-mar: Wait so the Spurs incinerated a #19 pick?

LOL, that’s right. Today spursblogger.net is probably on fire. ;P

    48. I wonder what the plan is with Samanic. We’ve been churning through the bottom of our roster more than usual lately so maybe it’s another blip on the radar. Or..do they anticipate needing Sims this season more than they originally thought and maybe see Samanic as a possible option as a stretch big? Whatever the case, it feels like a very low risk-high reward gamble considering his draft pedigree. I kinda hope that Aamir Simms sticks with Westchester too.

    49. Alan: Boo. They are not working. At least not when they’re my own Tweets.

Mastering superpowers is a long and winding road! :P

    50. Samanic’s G-League and overseas numbers are reasonably intriguing and the Spurs don’t know shit these days. Above average use of the two-way slot IMO.

    51. I wonder what the plan is with Samanic. We’ve been churning through the bottom of our roster more than usual lately so maybe it’s another blip on the radar.

It really is weird how many back of the roster guys they’ve cycled through.

    52. There was a 76ers game in 2011/2012 that was right after Linsanity. We sold section 200 seats for like $600 each and the Knicks got destroyed in that game. I remember my buddy and I just thought “man those people who bought our tickets must have been pissed.”

I did the same thing…only my wife and I just used the money to buy other seats at that same game (and pocket the profit). That was….not a good game.

    53. I am still shocked at the fact that since Leon Rose has taken over, our Knicks have made consistently smart moves. Goes to show you how low the bar was previously lol. And most of them are effective moves. Is this..is this real? This Samanic thing- if he sticks- strikes me as an incredibly advantageous and shrewd move. Rose has made fringe moves that probably were never intended to have an immediate payoff, but always work to the team’s favor in some way.

Take Selden and Bacon. Everyone knew they probably were not gonna be on the team, but I think the impact is twofold. It adds more goodwill to the team’s reputation, and that (plus the contract year probably) has brought out a new level of energy and effectiveness from Knox. And that will pay off should we ever need him- if he’snot traded. I’m just sayin- I’ve been a Knicks fan since Gerald Wilkins was on the team. I’m not used to this level of thoroughness with top to bottom roster decisions.

Also..watching Thibs with the media has me wondering if he’s an even better fit than JVG was. I’ve never seen Thibs be this candid. Knowing how intense he normally is, this is a sign that he truly loves being the Knicks coach. Tell you one thing..he’s making me miss JVG a little less. I wonder though..if the team say..gets in a fight with Brooklyn or Philly? Will Thibs hang on to KD or Embiid’s leg to try and break up a fight? LOL that would be perfect

    54. You don’t need gifs to be extraordinaire!!!!

(i could definitely use a Liberace gif here!)

    55. I watched one Spurs game last year where Samanic came in and was absolutely electric. Clearly has the tools to be a good player. I remember googling him to figure out who he was and why he wasn’t getting more minutes.

      Seems like a solid flyer….

    56. Minus
      Cut by the Spurs

This is less of a red flag than it used to be. I’m still not expecting much out of our New Luka, but the Spurs FO has been kind of a mess of late, as Jowles has gone into at greater length in other posts.

    57. As long as Popovic is there allow me to feel that “cut by SAS” is the worst of the 30 nba teams.
Not a good sign for me.
      Especially for a rookie/youngster

    58. Just back from watching our old friend Shane Larkin and former Mavs Rodrigue Beaubois (I remember him tormenting us in a MSG blowout, many years ago) losing against the unstoppable Olimpia Milano.

Any news on the Mitch/Noel front for tonight game?

    59. This story is very much like the previous link shared above. Highlights that he quits on plays, acts like he just doesn’t enjoy basketball much and won’t put the energy into it necessary to succeed.
      https://www.poundingtherock.com/2021/10/11/22721523/luka-samanic-and-the-spurs-were-never-quite-right-for-each-other
Hence my earlier Bargs line. It’ll be interesting to see if Thibs’ coaching staff can beat that out of him, otherwise I can’t imagine they’ll have much more patience than SAS had.

    60. Begley:

Here’s how Thibodeau described the Knicks’ approach to Robinson’s rehab:

“He was here for most of the summer. When he did go home, we sent a trainer with him, we sent a coach with him. We sent basically three people (with him). Because he’s that important. And all our players are. I think going through a rehab like he’s going through, I think it’s important for us to be heavily involved. And he’s responded.

“It’s not easy to go through a long rehab. That was the one thing that Derrick did before, for three consecutive years. So I know the challenges that go along with that. There’s a physical challenge, there’s also a mental challenge. You’re away from your teammates, that’s not an easy thing to do. So we wanted to make sure he got through that.

“And the staff we have, Aaron Brooks was with him a lot, Kenny Payne has been with him. The whole staff was involved with him. And he’s really grown. Not only the physical part, but who he is; he’s much more confident. I think he has a great understanding now of the league, what goes into it. So we’re anxious to get him back out there.”

    61. @NYPost_Berman
Mitchell won’t start and will play limitedly. “Get his feet wet”, Thibs said.

    62. Oh man, I don’t want to open a bag of worms but I have to talk at least a little bit about this article about Kyrie: https://www.theringer.com/nba/2021/10/15/22727896/kyrie-irving-nets-vaccine-holdout-brooklyn-nets

      In particular, this quote:

The first messy subject—see the above—is Kyrie himself: obviously one of the smartest and most thoughtful players in the NBA, also one of the most grandiose and whimsical.

How can anyone, let alone a professional writer who’s written for the NYT Mag and The New Yorker, look at Kyrie “The Earth Is Flat” Irving aka Kyrie “I’ve Had Multiple Knee Surgeries Without Asking Any Questions But Vaccines Are Different” Irving and say, yeah this dude is obviously both smart and thoughtful. Is it supposed to be a dig at the rest of the NBA that Kyrie “Hotep” Irving is one of the smartest and most thoughtful players in the NBA?

    63. Jesus. I just careened from a Robinson Doubter to a Robinson Dreamer.

Looking forward to finding out the reality (which initially is likely to be somewhere in between…).

    64. This is funny! :D

      Jeremy Cohen @TheCohencidence:

      *Knicks win 2024 NBA championship*

Mike Breen: After 51 years, the New York Knicks are once again NBA champs

Jeff Van Gundy: Can I just say, I’m thrilled for Tom Thibodeau

Mark Jackson: Absolutely Jeff, but let’s not forget about Elfrid Payton’s contributions three seasons ago

    65. Alan:
      Game thread?

Mike K is demanding more money from MSG to create game threads. There will be no new game threads until KB.net & MSG can reach an agreement.

    66. I hope that Mitch stays healthy. He’s the difference between 44 wins and probably 55.
