    1. @Ourand_SBJ
MSG Network went dark on Xfinity systems in northern New Jersey and Connecticut at midnight last night. The two sides put out dueling statements. But the upshot is that no deal appears on the horizon. This is going to be a long one.

Sigh. Well, it was fun watching the Knicks while it lasted.

    2. Apparently it’s watch bad Knicks teams or watch no Knicks teams. Dolan, the gift that keeps on giving.

    3. Ugh. Sorry Alan.

‘First wacky prediction that will get buried with this thread shortly: Obi and McBride are going to be a big part of the Knicks success this year.’

Hope so, Z-Man. I feel the same way, more McBride even. Hard part is giving rookies the whole season to measure their body of work. As with Obi, who didn’t seem even capable (and got a lot of shit here) until late in the season. I think McBride has the potential to start hot, but I’ll be surprised (and delighted) if he gets much playing time until the season’s well underway.

Someone here said ‘Play the kids!’ That’s my mantra.

    4. It just feels like it’s going to be hard for Deuce to get minutes early on, even though he’s a very Thibs type player. I assume the PG depth chart is something like this:

      Walker
      Rose
      Quickley
      Burks
      McBride
      Vildoza

Though if Vildoza gets the boot off and plays well enough to make the roster, he could very well wind up above Deuce and/or Burks. Now, if we have stretches where both of the pain point guards are out, and the coaches decide that, no, IQ is not a point guard, and that they no longer want to mess with Point Burks, then sure. It just feels like a lot of things have to happen.

    5. Bet the under:

“Jason Kidd says he expects Kristaps Porzingis to start at power forward, not center. Wants Porzingis to “be a basketball player” — feel free to put the ball on the floor, take midrange shots and “not be limited to shooting 3s.”

    6. Duece’s initial opportunity may come due to his ability to defend point guards like Trae, who present challenges to Kemba and Rose. If he is effective in that and his offense proficient, he may carve out a role in Thibs’s rotation.
Is anyone concerned about the amount of rust that brolic Mitch will have due to the amount of time he has been unable to scrimmage? The injury would not preclude him from practicing his shooting( especially foul shots) but limits other parts of his court development.

    7. Yeah I feel like if Vildoza makes the roster he’d play PG ahead of Burks. I think they’d probably try McBride there before Burks too-Burks at PG was the we don’t have anyone who can play PG option.

    8. Is anyone concerned about the amount of rust that brolic Mitch will have due to the amount of time he has been unable to scrimmage?

Not unless he forgot how to run and jump

    9. Mitch may not have forgotten how to run and jump but he does appear to have a new body that he could have used some training camp time to get accustomed to.

And this injury has taken a really long time not quite healing.,

Mitch is 74% of why I watch this team and I am definitely a little concerned about how things are going.

    10. Still having a difficult time wrapping my brain around the idea of a New York Knicks roster being too deep for a talented rookie to get any real minutes

    11. Yeah I feel like if Vildoza makes the roster he’d play PG ahead of Burks. I think they’d probably try McBride there before Burks too-Burks at PG was the we don’t have anyone who can play PG option.

You may be right, DRed. Certainly, we were desperate at the time we did Point Burks late last season. But I could also see Thibs shortening the rotation at a certain level of injuries, rather than trying to work in Vildoza or Deuce.

Duece’s initial opportunity may come due to his ability to defend point guards like Trae, who present challenges to Kemba and Rose. If he is effective in that and his offense proficient, he may carve out a role in Thibs’s rotation.

This, on the other hand, is a bit convincing. Kemba is a bad individual defender. Rose isn’t a great one but he understands Thibs’ scheme well. But if we just need a PG stopper, Deuce is the best we probably have on the roster, and he’s much more of an offensive threat than Frank was on his best day.

    12. Either Miles or Grimes earning minutes would be nice to see since we are so weak on perimeter defense.

    13. It’s odd that the foul-baiting rule changes are coming into effect this year of all year — last year’s overall .192 FT/FGA was the lowest since the stat began to be tracked in the 1973-74 season. I’m not saying it’s not warranted, just interesting that the league is taking action now, and not back in 2006 or so, when fouls were drawn about 25% more often, in related to FGA attempts.

For all the talk about eliminating “non-basketball plays,” how about we fix the end of games, where it looks like a game of keepaway played by uber-athletic tall millionaires? This is Z-man’s cue to tell us all that foul-and-pray is a pillar of the game that is a joy to watch.

    14. I don’t see the need for Vildoza at this point. He has underwhelmed ever since we signed him. I’d move on.

    15. Hi geo! Not much of a traveller here.

not to get too personal, but, why is it that you think you don’t travel more?

not so sure the desire to travel was there a lot when i was younger, until about 40 or so, i sure did move around a lot though…the last couple of decades, not so much…less and less as the years go by…

there are some places though i wouldn’t mind visiting…for reasons, top of my fantasy travel list right now is malta…

    16. DRed:

That’s it Jason, Porzingis with freedom to put the ball on the floor is exactly what Dallas is missing. This is going to end really well. LOL

    17. It’s entirely possible that Kemba & Rose go down at the same time. We’ll need 2 PGs and Deuce, IQ, & Burks may struggle running the point. Vildoza gives us another option at PG.

Remember that both Burks & Fournier missed nearly 30 games last year too.

It’s entirely possible we need Deuce & Luca at PG because Grimes & IQ are already covering our wings.

    18. I love to watch the rookies develop and (try to) become good players, but I don’t think we’re in a stage where “play the kids” makes sense. We’re a playoff team and so we should try to get the best seed we can, meaning we’ll not be playing the kids a lot. But i hope Thibs doesn’t play the best players the insane amount of minutes he did last season (who am i kidding?), and there’s some minutes left to play the kids once in a while. And even more important, i hope we use the G-League to develop the rookies. The past regimes weren’t favorable to that approach, but we’ll only know how Leon feels about it this year.

    19. @ShamsCharania
Sources: The 76ers are not paying Ben Simmons his $8.25 million payment due today as the three-time All-Star awaits a trade. Simmons still is not showing up to Philadelphia and has understood the ramifications of his holdout.

I wrote “play the kids” in a previous thread, and I really hope we do. Given that both Kemba and Rose are likely to be on restricted minutes and Kemba may even sit out back to backs, I think this season is a real opportunity to have a second unit of all kids. Better still if they get a lot of time together. By now Mitch is a wild card for me bc of all the injuries. I hope he excels this year but I’m not holding my breath. On the other hand RJ, IQ, and Obi (playoff Obi, please) have no excuses. I want to see what they can do. And if the rookies get burn for reasons above, defense etc. I’m even happier. Like someone else said above, I don’t even need to see Vildoza suit up.

Facing facts, the next Knicks championship team will not have any of Rose, Walker, Burks, Fournier, on it and maybe not even Julius if he regresses (as I sadly expect). Let’s get the next guys battle tested together and figure out which ones to keep.

    21. Yeah the Kids will get their opportunity once the inevitable injuries pop up on the Wing and PG spots. Fournier has to miss any games and Thibs will have no choice but to play Grimes

    22. kevin5318:

Yeah I’m curious to see if Thibs will be proactive (!) and devise a managed minutes scheme, especially given his comments about wanting to have the right guys on at the end. If so, it’s a great opportunity to give the young guys continuity with one another from the beginning of the season rather than hitting the panic button when someone inevitably goes down.

    23. geo:
howdy dude, hope you’re feeling well and treatment is going – tolerable at least…

Thanks, geo. Treatment was absolutely terrible the last time and I thought that it could be the end of the line for me. I took an extra week off and am doing better now. I go back next week. Ughhh.

    24. @ShamsCharania

I just can’t imagine Simmons continuing to stay home at this point. It will feel pretty bad and definitely a lot of people online will make fun of him for caving, but he can actually make more of a nuisance of himself by being there and, yeah, the small matter of $8M.

    25. I think he’s bizarrely decided to make this a “thing,” and he has made so much money already (and eventually will make more money) that he’s okay with it. It truly is mystifying as to how everyone involved has handled this so poorly outside of I guess Morey, but even there, you could argue that Morey should know these guys well enough to know that the ostensible “best” way to handle this (which was Morey’s strategy) is not actually the best way to handle it when the people involved are not cooperating.

    26. considering the history of the parties involved, chances are good that simmons won’t actually “lose” that money, maybe some, but, rich paul has some pretty deep pockets…

    27. geo:
are you able to focus primarily on your health, or are you engaged in other stuff too?

Luckily, I can focus on my health. What’s tough is that there is no cure. Sometimes I feel like Sisyphus, rolling the big boulder up the hill.

    28. I also can’t believe how badly Simmons & his people have handled this. Like he’s going to get tons of money whenever he finally gets moved, but this has got to be murder for his brand.

    29. Like who wants the loser who was afraid to dunk the ball in the playoffs and then pouted all summer to endorse their stuff

    30. I haven’t given up on Vildoza. I think there’s a real possibility he had this injury during the olympics but was playing through it, the way athletes often do when they think the stakes are high. But my intuition about the current Knicks medical staff is that they don’t let players do that. Look at Mitch for an example. If this is the case Vildoza could be better than he showed in the Olympics.

    31. I thought it couldn’t get dumber than Embiid and Rivers throwing their max player under the bus but now that player has decided to stay there until Morey decides to unlatch the parking brake

    32. Usually I don’t go in for the new-agey, vaguely snowflaky, modern idea of “Don’t criticize your players in public” but if there’s one time it clearly applies it’s at the end of a tough playoff series where you’ve just lost Game 7 and a reporter asks a gotcha question. There’s literally only one answer to the question Doc was asked and it’s, “Yes, we can win a championship with Ben.” Doc fucking that up is the worst answer by a coach to a question about a player I can ever remember.

    33. E, I am in total agreement. When you win, you win as a team and when you lose, you lose as a team. Any coach should know that.

    34. I thought it couldn’t get dumber than Embiid and Rivers throwing their max player under the bus but now that player has decided to stay there until Morey decides to unlatch the parking brake

I can only imagine what Morey is thinking about with these guys. “Are all of you morons?”

    35. Ben is such a weird player I can see why people would have trouble appreciating what he does and get mad at what he doesn’t do-they’ve been trying to get him to shoot for years and he won’t do it. He won’t work with the teams people in the offseason. He is far from the only reason they lost that game, but he had an open dunk down the stretch and for whatever reason he wouldn’t shoot. He shot 15-45 from the line in a series in which his team lost games by 4, 3, 4, and 7 points. Doc Rivers was a really good, really competitive NBA player who hit almost 80% of his FTs in his playoff career. Yeah, he should have been more diplomatic about Ben, but he’s also probably losing his mind that this guy can’t make a fucking free throw after years of being coddled by his team and he almost certainly can’t understand why you wouldn’t dunk the ball when you had an open path under the hoop late in a game 7.

    36. Oh, I totally agree that Simmons must have been very frustrating to deal with, but if you want to get rid of him, trashing him is not the way to do it. Doc is a very smart guy, so it’s shocking that he didn’t get that.

    37. Doc gets some OAKAAK love from me, but he may be one of the most overrated coaches in history.

Embiid is a pompous ass who should be 40 lbs lighter. I.m glad he and his mouth and knees are not on our team.

    38. Simmons was deeply wronged by Doc and Embiid. I don’t blame him for forcing his way out. But he’s a head case that I would want no part of on the Knicks.

Is he a championship caliber player on a max deal? Sure, but that’s not whete I’d spend my money. He’d be a good fit on a small-market WC team like Sacramento. Maybe by his next contract he will have patched up the holes in his game and his ego enough to be part of a big 3 in a big market.
