    1. Former Golden State Warriors Star Who Hasn’t Played In The NBA For 4 Years Will Be Paid More Money By The Indiana Pacers Next Season Than New York Knicks’ Immanuel Quickley Will Get From The Knicks

Ahhh, the dog days of NBA offseason beat writing.

    2. Looking at our playoff roster, Randle, Barrett, Rose, Burks, Noel, Gibson, Quickley, Toppin and Knox (and Robinson on IL) are all back. Gone are Bullock, Ntilikina and Payton. Those 3 are replaced by Fournier and Kemba. And we have 3 draftees (Grimes, McBride and Sims)that will need to fight for playing time along with Luca Vildoza. The 3 draftees alone might be better than the trio of Bullock, Frank and Elf.

The continuity is the 10 returning playoff players and Mitch have a year of experience in the system together. They had a year of being coached by an elite coaching staff and they are very deep. Players are all going to put pressure on each other to have gotten better – just to survive on the roster. I look at the other teams in the east. Many have gotten better, but I think, this could be an amazing season.
Most prognosticators are predicting a 40-45 win team and a play-in berth. No way. My predictions: 50+ wins, 3 or 4 seed in the East team. (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Miami and Phillie, look out!) RJ joins Randle on the all-star team. #1 ranked team defense. Top third in 3-point scoring.

Leon is not done. I predict that Knox and picks will get traded for another all-star.

BTW, apologies for my recent absence. I was away. My son got hitched!

    3. Congrats, GoNY!

How many picks would have to be attached to Kevin Knox to acquire an all-star? 19? 37?

    4. From the last thread…

JK47: Is anybody here a fan of Blake Mills?

Didn’t knew him before, thanks for the tip. I found some videos and he’s very good indeed.
This one can mix Blake and Bob Dylan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1i8dnAi3X4
And Danielle Haim also looks very good on the drums… well, sounds good i mean… but yeah, she also looks good, on and off the drums. LOL
Oh, btw, Bob recorded this music in 1981 with Ronnie Wood on guitar, and Ringo Starr on the drums… oh man, this video is related to almost all of our last music threads. :)

    5. JJ Redick retired. Played forever, was on eight different teams (a couple of those twice), never a star but often a hugely valuable role player.

    6. Hey Raven, yesterday we were talking about the Top NBA players and i said we’d have to wait for the SI’s Top100… well, they started it today!? What a coincidence! :O
Julius was 79th on 2020, but on 2021 he was out of the Top100 for a total of zero Knicks players on the list.
About the 2022 list, they released today numbers 100-51 and we already have 3 players on the list: Evan (91), DRose (89) and Kemba (69). Coming tuesday they’ll release 50-31, if Julius isn’t on that list that’ll mean he’ll be Top30. :)

    7. Alan: How many picks would have to be attached to Kevin Knox to acquire an all-star? 19? 37?

The bigger question is how many additional picks are we attaching because Knox is in the deal instead of nobody.

    8. Alan:
      Congrats, GoNY!

How many picks would have to be attached to Kevin Knox to acquire an all-star? 19? 37?

If you attach a video of his 3 on 3 performances I believe the answer is zero

    9. Randle deserves all the credit in the world for how many minutes he played but people are going overboard about his value. I say that knowing I underrated him going into last season.

    10. GoNyGoNYGo: Most prognosticators are predicting a 40-45 win team and a play-in berth. No way. My predictions: 50 wins, 3 or 4 seed in the East team. (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Miami and Phillie, look out!)

I think we can overachieve again, but it’s hard to do it a 2nd time because now teams are ready for us.
I hope you’re right, of course, but my predictions have Philly, Miami and Atlanta ahead of us, which leaves the 6th seed (to escape the play-in) for the other teams you mentioned.
Boston and Knicks look to be better than Chicago. Maybe some other teams have a chance too, like Washington and Indiana. Or maybe the Raptors regain their best form by playing in Toronto again. Charlotte will have a lot of trouble trying to sneak in.

    11. cybersoze: Coming tuesday they’ll release 50-31, if Julius isn’t on that list that’ll mean he’ll be Top30. :)

Looks like i misread this, the 100-51 part of the list was released yesterday, so the “coming tuesday” they were talking about is today. The list is out and Julius is #41. A little lower than i expected, but it’s not bad. And will drive him to work even harder to prove them wrong. ;)

    12. I think it’s possible we could finish ahead of Miami. They have good front line talent but I don’t love their depth, and Kyle Lowry is old. I could definitely see that team failing to live up to their projections.

    13. ESPN Sources: Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons will not report for opening of training camp next week and intends to never play another game for the franchise. Simmons hasn’t spoken to team since a late August meeting when he communicated this message to Sixers officials.

Well, this should be incredibly messy for the Sixers and league officials, who certainly don’t want the precedent of a player with this many years left on his contract refusing to show up for work.

    15. Alan: Well, this should be incredibly messy for the Sixers and league officials, who certainly don’t want the precedent of a player with this many years left on his contract refusing to show up for work.

I least we get to watch Daryl Morey try to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

    16. I cannot believe how fucking stupid Doc Rivers and Joel Embiid were. They alone turned a good asset into absolutely nothing. He’s going to get traded for a couple of 2nds when all is said and done.

    17. The Honorable Cock Jowles:
I cannot believe how fucking stupid Doc Rivers and Joel Embiid were. They alone turned a good asset into absolutely nothing. He’s going to get traded for a couple of 2nds when all is said and done.

Look on the bright side. If Embiid breaks down in a year or two maybe they’ll rehire Hinkie and then we’ll get to debate “the process 2” for another 10 years and wonder what might have been. :-)

    18. But but but they didn’t let Hinkie finish the process! Don’t you know! If he was allowed to tank for 5 more seasons Philly would have a championship by now! And all it would have taken is tanking for a decade to achieve it!

    19. I am so grateful that Ben Simmons is being the biggest dick he can possibly be. He is single-handedly tanking the possibility of Lillard and Embiid teaming up in Philadelphia.

Maybe we should stop thinking about them as locks to finish above us. Maybe GoNY is right and we can get back to the 4 seed.

    20. Deeefense:
Thanks for the heads up on Blake Mills.Since I mostly play blues (or at least try), I found this one interesting. A lot of star power here.He gets a nice solo in.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyvQD6UU_uQ

Strat, it’s a bit outside your wheelhouse I think but you might enjoy the album Blake Mills made with Pino Palladino. It’s definitely what I would call a “jazz” album and it’s definitely not blues at all but Blake Mills’ playing on that project is stunning. Mills and Palladino are both musicians who are incredibly sympathetic backing musicians, and to hear them play with each other is fascinating because neither one ever really takes the lead. It’s incredibly symbiotic playing between two masters. The sax player Sam Gendel is also really innovative player.

      Check out this tune:

I hadn’t seen that but man his solo in that is FIERCE.

He doesn’t play in the blues space all that much but that solo slaughters anything Eric Clapton ever did and I’m not exaggerating. The phrasing in that clip is just beyond.

After one particularly sweet lick, Matt “Guitar” Murphy just gives him a look like “Are you fucking kidding me?”

    22. The fourth seed is definitely a possibility. 76er’s look to be on the brink of chaos. Lowry is old in Miami. Bucks, Nets and Hawks are the only “locks” to be good and they most likely have the 1,2,3 spots secure. After that it is anyone’s guess and there is no reason we can’t be the 4th seed again.

    23. JK47: After one particularly sweet lick, Matt “Guitar” Murphy just gives him a look like “Are you fucking kidding me?”

I laughed at that because I was thinking the same thing.

I already found a video of some guy that takes apart that solo and teaches it. That’s my next lesson. It’s not like I’m any good or have any aspirations to be any good at this age, but when I get into these hobbies I live for those moments when by accident or just some crazy short lived peak I do whatever it is really well for even 5-10 minutes. It gives me a really “high” feeling. Right now, I’m just not good enough to get more than a glimpse of pretty good, but at least I am still getting better. The neighbors aren’t complaining. lol

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWmoV4TVd7k

    24. any of you guitar guys have an opinion on Marcus King? I had never heard of him until a month ago, then I saw him perform live and stick around til 2am getting hammered with the crowd. I was impressed, but I have an untrained ear and can be impressed rather easily.

That solo doesn’t seem unattainable to learn, there are some difficult technical things in it but the magic of it is his phrasing, timing and note choice. He’s also super respectful to the blues form in that solo, he’s playing strictly within that idiom and just has complete mastery of it.

To me something like this is on a whole other level from a guy like John Mayer, who is very good himself. Blake Mills is like “best guitar player in the world” kind of good.

    26. Thanks to this thread, I just had the revelation that I used to see Blake Mills perform in talent shows at Malibu High, back in what must have been 2002 or so. He used to play with Roy Orbison’s son and Lenny Goldsmith’s son (and I think one of Gregg Allman’s kids too). They must have been 15 at the time, and now I realize, from following the various links in this thread, that I saw these guys again, some 15 years later, opening for Alabama Shakes at the Greek. I didn’t put any of this together until just now. It’s cool that Mills is getting noticed by Knick fans all over the country now, haha.

    27. To answer the “how many picks would have to be attached to Kevin Knox to acquire an all-star?” I think the answer came already. There are going to be disgruntled players that teams simply cannot get rid of. Big ticket guys. John Wall, now Ben Simmons. How would Knox and 2 second rounders sound to Houston and Philly? There are trades to be made. Our fan opinions mean little. If we’re able to absorb a cash hit, we can make a trade.

Thanks everyone! I’m sure nobody really cares but I can’t talk about the details with anyone who really knows me personally yet and I just have to spew…

This was no ordinary wedding. My son met his wife in Nicaragua while playing digital nomad. She’s an Argentinian that moved to Toronto when she was 12. They had to get “legally” married last fall for her green card but she hadn’t seen her parents or siblings in person for 16 months because of the pandemic. We drove up to Toronto for a religious mini-mony (a new fangled term) and at the engagement dinner that they threw after the ceremonies, my son and his new wife handed out “save the date” cards to parents and siblings. The “save the date” card was for the arrival of my first grandchild in April!

(BTW, they’re all Raptor fans up there)

    28. We have an Argentine on the team! How did he not get the Knicks in the prenup!?!

Congrats, that is terrific news GoNY.

    29. The thing about trying to predict the Knicks’ seed is the only outcomes I would find truly surprising are a finish in the top 3 or outside the top 10. Even last year only a game separated us from the 6th seed, and this year there are even more teams that project to be of roughly similar quality and/or better than they were last year.

If we won, say, 48 games I could see that being good enough for the 4th seed or not even keeping us out of the play-in. For that reason I think it makes more sense to try to predict the team’s quality more broadly.

    30. GoNY, congrats, and that’s a very convoluted story. Thanks for sharing.

And Donnie, an even more convoluted story re Blake. Well done.

    31. Owen:
We have an Argentine on the team! How did he not get the Knicks in the prenup!?!

My daughter-in-law’s brother’s hit me up about him the day Luca was signed!

    32. GoNyGoNYGo: My daughter-in-law’s brother’s hit me up about him the day Luca was signed!

What did he say? Do we have the new Manu on our hands or what? :D
Congrats on the news, being a granddad it’s probably even better, you have the good part and little responsibility. LOL

    33. vincoug:
If we offered Philly Knox and two 2nd for Ben Simmons they’d laugh and hang up the phone.

they wouldn’t be able to hang up because they would be laughing too hard…

    34. We’d offer them the protected CHA pick (which I’ve been assured is indistinguishable from two 2nds), so at least they’d pause to figure out the protections before laughing

pepper: they wouldn’t be able to hang up because they would be laughing too hard…

      .

    35. Funny how I go searching for Blake Mills videos and find his NPR concert with the legendary Pino Palladino and a recent obsession of mine, Sam Gendel, who turns the sax into a totally new instrument (polysax).

Julian Lage is also one of the best guitarists on earth right now. His famous rendition of “I’ll Be Seeing You” makes me feel like I’m watching an alien. The intro to that is the result of years of working on motifs, but it is IMPROVISED. Go ahead and look that one up. It is improvised. How?

    36. swiftandabundant:
But but but they didn’t let Hinkie finish the process! Don’t you know! If he was allowed to tank for 5 more seasons Philly would have a championship by now! And all it would have taken is tanking for a decade to achieve it!

I’m not taking bait on this one. If you don’t see how Colangelo AND Brand nearly rode The Process into the ground, that’s on you. We’ve discussed it too much for anyone to hold this variety of dumb opinion.

    37. cybersoze: What did he say? Do we have the new Manu on our hands or what? :D

They like him a lot but that might be national pride and was before the Olympics.
BTW (and you probably all know this already) but Luca may not be available for training camp. He has fluid on his ankle which limited him in the Olympics.

      vincoug:
If we offered Philly Knox and two 2nd for Ben Simmons they’d laugh and hang up the phone.

Haha. That trade couldn’t fly anyway. He’s a $33M player and the Knicks don’t have a single player making over $22M. They can’t match salaries in a manner that works for any reasonable trade. Honestly, he’s really good but he’s also very flawed for a max player. Same goes for Wall. He’s great but can there be a bigger injury risk in hoops? These are albatross contracts I wouldn’t touch. Maybe the ones laughing are the teams that the 76ers are calling?

    38. It’s not a dumb opinion, jowles. It’s just one you disagree with. The fact that you have to call it dumb and also don’t want to talk about it proves to me that deep down inside you know you’re wrong but bring the stubborn guy you are, you’ll never admit it. It’s ok, buddy. I know it hurts ya can’t take me over the fire anymore for bargnarni or being tram optimist since my crew runs the board now! Ha!

They processed for 5 seasons and drafted exactly one good player and one good but flawed player who is now untradeable. All their other top picks were busts. But they just needed more time, right? So do the twolves and kings. Any day now tanking for high picks will win them a championship too.

    39. It’s amazing just how many people are ready to besmirch the success of the Sixers Process even though they were one rim bounce away from an NBA championship

    40. Come on now, Silky. They were one rim bounce away from still having to go through the Bucks and the Warriors.

    41. Of course the counterfactual is largely unknowable, but I liked Philadelphia’s chances at the time just as much as Toronto’s. If that impression of mine was accurate they had just as good a shot against the warriors and bucks as Toronto did. In any case, it’s just a bit silly to think that the lack of a chip means that the process was a failure when they’re perennial first or second tier contenders

    42. Sixers management since Hinkie has been bad (not counting Morey, who hasn’t been there very long, but he’s not off to a great start either). That makes it hard yo evaluate the process as successful or not.

    43. I like Clark jr. He’s a guy that gained prominence at an older age. He’s extremely good. But my problem with him is that he just doesn’t have many really good songs in his catalogue. If you can see him live, though, I recommend it, as I would any top-tier talent in any field. But, as I’ve said here before (I think), of all the guitarists I’ve been privileged to see live (and I’ve seen a lot, mostly in intimate settings), the greatest is, by far, Tuck Andress who is a jazz guitarist and the uncle of St Vincent. You can see some of his performances on YouTube, if you care to. I’ve been seeing his shows live whenever I can for 20-plus years now. Every time I am more in awe of his mastery.

    44. Too many people put an emphasis on winning an NBA championship. The 76ers were the #1 seed in the East this year. They’re perennially among the teams that have a legit NBA title shot. We just went through this with Giannis, he wasn’t a “winning” player until suddenly he won. Despite a lot of mismanagement, the process worked.

    45. It’s pretty much beyond dispute that The Process worked, even though Hinkie made some errors and Philly ownership got impatient and stupid.

A few years from now we’ll be having the same argument about OKC and Presti, only that he’s smarter than Hinkie and has more cache with ownership. Anyone want to bet against them being a perennial contender by then?

    46. The real underlying argument is not whether the process works (it certainly does if done patiently and intelligently) but whether it is preferable to other approaches. Clearly, lots of perennial contenders have been built without enduring season after season of abject tanking. So The Process is not definitively the “best” or the “only” way to go, and is far from foolproof.

    47. It’s pretty much beyond dispute that The Process worked, even though Hinkie made some errors and Philly ownership got impatient and stupid.

I totally agree with you, but here we are, still having folks dispute it.
