    1. Did not know the Mop-headed Hustle Bunny was part Native American.

Baker is also a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, a Native American tribe in the state of Oklahoma.

    2. I wonder if the team is actually still sort of high on Knox. Statistically, he shot much better last year (in more limited minutes, obviously), although the eye test found him looking a bit lost out there.

A .537 ts% is somewhat respectable, and he shot near .400 from three. The problem is the rest of his game. His rebounding was actually down, and he’s never been more than a baseline competent passer. His defense sort of improved (the Thibs bump?) but he still has a ways to go there as well.

That said, he’s still over a year younger than Obi and multiple years younger than Duarte. It’s not inconceivable that he’ll improve.

I’d like to think they’ll try to rehab Knox this year, but there won’t be many real game minutes for him unless we pull a big trade where we send out Obi and/or RJ. He seems like a nice kid, so I hope he gets an opportunity somewhere. One has to think he could at least grow into a Bobby Portis-style role eventually.

Reservation Dogs is a good, new show on FX about modern living on an OK reservation (if you’re looking for a show or want to know more about Ron Baker’s roots)…

… I don’t think Redick is worth a roster spot at this phase.

    4. Early Bird:
So, Ron Baker first ballot HOFer or does he have to wait a year?

even if he slips through the cracks..the veterans committee will make sure he gets in…

    5. .537 TS% is pretty bad. You better be a stud on defense or shot creation for teammates if you shoot that far under league average.

    6. I think Knox will get garbage time minutes and/or minutes when the injury situation is really bad, not look particularly good in them, and unceremoniously walk in the offseason. The decision to incinerate the 19th pick will thus look even stupider in hindsight.

I agree he seems like a nice kid and I truly do hope he sticks somewhere. For all of the unverified talk we got about how hard of a worker Frank Ntilikina was, Knox was the one who asked to play in summer league after his third year and never once grumbled about his role.

Being kind of tall and perhaps able to shoot threes should give him a better chance than Frank to catch on somewhere.

    7. The kind of player Knox is supposed to be would be useful on this team, since he’s more of a theoretical stretch big than Obi, and could help with specific matchups. Shame he’s just not good nearly all of the time. Those rare nights when his jumper is super wet make me exasperated he can’t just be Steve Novak.

    8. Jowles sent me wandering, leading me to share two small nuggets that barely qualify as interesting.

One is that by position (PG, SG, SF, PF, C) the TS% average is 55.7, 55.9, 57.2, 58.1, and 60.6, respectively. Certainly backing his claim about Knox, wherever one might slot him in.

The other is that 3PT% is spookily consistent across positions. 36.9, 36.9, 36.8, 36.6, and 34.2 respectively. Attempts vary from 1.4 for centers to 4.1 for shooting guards, but still. I would have been really wrong if someone had asked me this before I looked.

    9. Knox 2pa per 36 / 2p%

      19 – 9.2 / .387
      20 – 6.2 / .391
      21 – 4.2 / .389

      Knox reb per 36

      19 – 5.6
      20 – 5.7
      21 – 4.7

you really need to make layups in the nba… esp the easy ones… and you really need to grab boards if you’re in the frontcourt… those are as non-negotiable skills in the nba as you can get…

outside of a captain america like transformation or taking the lance thomas route of getting scorching hot from 3 for a couple months.. he’s probably destined for the 3on3 event in Paris in 2024….

    10. It seemed like Knox busted his ass enough last year to endear himself to the coaching staff but didn’t improve enough to be playable. I’d love to see him get 30 minutes a night in the G-League and see if something clicks though more for his sake than the Knicks- his processing time is so slow I can’t imagine him ever being more than a role player.

    11. I think it’s easy to underestimate just how good Novak was & he still barely played. Novak shot 43% for his career from 3 & per 100 took 12.4 3PA. That’s some prolific shooting on par with Steph Curry (43.3% & 12.2 3PA/100). Even great shooters like JJ Redick, Ray Allen, & Klay Thompson don’t quite measure up to Novak’s ability to hoist & hit 3s.

Knox had 90 shots from 3 last year, hit 39.3%, and only took 9.6 3PA/100 (an improved rate but not enough, less than Reggie).

In Novak’s first year as a Knick, arguably his only good year, he took over 14 3PA/100 and hit a league leading 47.5% of them. Knox needs to find 5 more attempts per 100 possessions and lead the league in shooting to replicate that season.

Knox might become a poor man’s Novak, but Novak was an all-time great shooter to make up for his poor defense and rebounding.

    12. last year around this time i asked for the worst pick you would take for knox. although i can’t recall, presumably the group sidestepped the question for an extended debate on the merits of swaddling to king crimson vs yes, but i said the 50th. it’s now the 60th.

    13. Cash considerations is okay with me as long as it’s used on complimentary tickets to Jimmy D and the Stooges ir whatever he calls his band anymore

I don’t want to pay to heckle, makes the heckling taste even sweeter

    14. Cleveland is acquiring Chicago restricted free agent F Lauri Markkanen on a four-year, $67M deal in a sign-and-trade, sources tell ESPN.

      Weird Woj-bomb.

    15. nance is a good pickup for portland. jones jr didn’t work but nance is pretty good and fits them well.

    16. So the Cavs have like $70M in annual commitments to Love Allen Markkanen and they just drafted Mobley 3rd? Oh and Nance who’s a little more flexible but still more of a big than anything else? I guess they’re just going for talent still but that is a strange roster.

edit: Never mind on Nance I see he is part of the S&T

    17. loved the notes on child care in a car Jazzfunk :)

too funny, these days i just raise the volume of the music when the kids start talking too much in the car…if i really don’t feel like engaging in whatever back and forth the boys got going on – i start singing, loudly…hahahahahaha…

    18. Maybe you pitch people on the idea the Knox’s value will rise in a league where less scoring happens at the foul line. He got fouled less than Frank last year! Although, that’s probably not quite fair since Frank got some techs I bet and some late and close opportunities.

Amazingly, Obi had a lower FTr than Knox also.

I’d take anything for Knox. He probably will hang on in the league for a few more years somehow though because measurables, shooting, Kentucky, whatever….

    19. At this point, Knox is only a top10 pick salary filler for a trade. He’ll be a minor piece on any trade, but maybe other teams see him as a reclamation project, and that helps some deal. If not traded, we’ll let him go at the end of the season, just like Frank last year. But we can’t waive him or dump him, we need his salary on the books to use in trades.

    20. Thanks, Geo. Singing in the car at your kids is the best part of getting older. Your days of being self-conscious are long gone- theirs are only beginning. They know you are completely out of your mind, but it’s funny for a while. After the 5th song, the realization that their genes and your genes are somehow linked will scare them to death. They will tell you to stop, but you have to commit all the way and keep going.

    21. any folks here do the single parent thing?

generally, their mom’s a phone call away, but, for the most part, when i have the kids over, it’s just us…their mom and i are good friends and coordinate and communicate reference the kids a lot, but, i just think of all the cooking, cleaning, focused attention and wonder what that might be like with a partner around in the home…

i guess only doing weekends and school breaks mostly makes it easier on me anyways…still…

ha, okay – so today’s questions is would i rather have kevin knox or jj reddick on the roster…it’s close, but, i’d rather have reddick – i think…i don’t know, maybe not :)

    22. Hey Geo, I’m a single Dad. I have 50% custody of my 14 year old daughter. She seems to have adapted well, but I sometimes wake up in a panic thinking I need to wake her up for school or something.

    23. ***At this point, Knox is only a top10 pick salary filler for a trade. He’ll be a minor piece on any trade, but maybe other teams see him as a reclamation project, and that helps some deal.***

He’s the new Dennis Smith jr.

    24. The thing is that DSjr is a PG and only a PG, and it’s the position that requires the highest b-ball IQ. Knox is more generic and his required skillset is not one that runs the team. He will probably still suck, but at least he doesn’t have to make others better.

    25. ***The thing is that DSjr is a PG and only a PG, and it’s the position that requires the highest b-ball IQ. Knox is more generic and his required skillset is not one that runs the team.***

Yeah, that’s true. I just mean in the way Cybersoze describes him: his main use being a guy you include in a deal so the other team can save some face and say “and we got a recent lottery pick who’s only 21 years old”, a la Dennis Smith.

    26. Geo, I’m a single dad of two girls 10 and 12. The baby days are long behind me, but I’ve since moved upstate, and it’s hard being so far from them on a day-to-day basis. My ex is the primary caregiver, and we aren’t exactly friendly. She didn’t want me to move away, making things worse. She’s also made life hard for any girlfriend, including my current partner. I keep it together for the kids, but it has been difficult. It’s great when I get to see them on weekends or holidays, but I’m always juggling their, my new partner, and my ex’s needs. It feels like I’m the head of the UN sometimes…

    27. any folks here do the single parent thing?

i’m just gonna throw this out there bc it’s 3am and I’m coming down off my mushrooms…

About this time last year I was living single bachelor life as much as you could possibly live it. And then I girl I last saw in 2017 called me up and said her son was mine. I had like a 1 month period of being utterly crazy… probably caused a few fights on here during that time… but eventually, and rather quickly, I accepted it for the blessing that it was.

My son lives in Florida with his mom. I didn’t meet him til he was 2 years old. I’ve spent the last year going through more than you can imagine. But I’ve had a lot of time to bond with him. I go down there once a month, and he spent June & July with me.

It’s been a wild road… got multiple paternity tests… took a long time to agree on a parenting plan… but damn, in the end, it feels incredible. I’m 43 and didn’t think I’d ever have one.

It sucks not being there every day; I don’t think of parenting as a part time gig. But I am grateful AF to be in this position. It’s really changed my life in the most positive way.

    28. This blog is amazing, when we were discussing parenting didn’t even think about single parenting, as it’s not my reality. Single parenting must be very hard, there’s some stuff that’s always Lady Cyber that takes care, like health issues. I don’t know sh*t about it, and would probably panic a little (or a lot, can’t really say). Much respect to you guys that are doing all the parenting stuff alone.
And to keep the Rolling Stones conversation, we now know who’s Mick Jagger here on KB! :P
Can’t imagine getting a call from an ex saying “hey, want to know what i’ve been doing lately? i’ve been carrying your son and now you’re a dad”, must be an overwhelming feeling. But so cool you’re getting it right. ;)

    29. Kudos to you single dads, who are a part of your children’s lives. I learned as a teacher of many students from single-family homes, where one of the parents was absent from the child’s life, the profound harm to that child. Several of my teaching colleagues were single custodial parents and I have the utmost admiration and respect for them.
