    1. Eh, it’s after 7 a.m. Time to move to the new thread.

I’d cut Plumlee and Lou to keep Baker (who I agree should be in the rotation) and Randle (who I think we’re going to need when the inevitable Rose/Jennings injuries strike). Sasha has continued his surprisingly non-terrible play from the end of last season, and Willy, KOQ, and KP’s ability to play the 5 gives us enough big man depth to cover for Noah’s own inevitable injuries.

      That’d put the roster at

      C: Noah, Hernangomez, O’Quinn
      PF: Porzingis, Ndour
      SF: Melo, Thomas, Cheese
      SG: Lee, Holiday, Ron
      PG: Rose, Jennings, Sasha, Randle

That feels like a pretty well-balanced roster, leaning into the most likely contingency scenarios, and keeping most of our interesting young guys. Thoughts?

    2. from yesterday:

Anyhow, I have a non-legal question. If Hornacek is waiting for Rose to get back to install his offense, what have the Knicks been practicing the last week or so?

I think the obvious answer is that Hornacek has been installing the offense he actually wants to run, as opposed to the triangle.

      Thoughts from the Rose drama-
      – I still don’t know exactly what happened that night, but the entirety of the evidence that I’ve seen, and the fact that the jury very quickly (and reportedly unanimously) found her not credible can only suggest to me that Rose was not only “not-liable” but also innocent of the charges. People can quote “only x% of rape cases are ultimately found to be fraudulent”, but that still means that x% of the are fraudulent, and that this could have been one of them.
      – as to how he treats women — that’s a much more complicated conversation, and has more to do with the athlete/celebrity culture as it relates to women — on BOTH sides of the male/female equation. Celebrities definitely feel a sense of entitlement which is baked in over years, and is NOT exclusive to Derrick Rose. But- there are unquestionably groupies out there, and unquestionably women that try to take advantage of situations. There is a reason that in the NBA (and probably NFL/MLB/NHL) rookie symposium they spend a lot of time talking about how to protect yourself in those situations. It is not made up.
      – as to the group sex aspect of it – I have zero opinion about it. What someone likes to do in his/her bedroom as a theoretically consenting adult is none of my business.

Re: the game last night –
      – KP with body control at the rim and seeming to have some clue as to how to seal off smaller defenders in transition — he is going to be a MONSTER.
      – I have an irrational love for Ron Baker.
      – I have lots of worry about Lance Thomas. His 3’s are missing by feet. And he seems quite shot-happy.

    3. One last non-trial thing about Rose —

I don’t think anyone here thinks that a guy with a TS of 48.5 and a USG% of 30+ is a good thing for any offense. What the optimists think is that he has a chance of returning to some semblance of when he was a good player. THAT player is GOOD for an offense, especially if he doesn’t feel the need to take every shot like he did when he was playing with an offensively challenged Bulls roster.

Meanwhile, how about the ball movement last night? That ball was zipping around. I was really impressed.

And like others, I have been really pleasantly surprised by Sasha. It’s become a cottage industry to rip on Sasha, but he really has played well since the midway point of last season. There’s no question he belongs on this roster.

interesting lineup of the night was 6’7″ Sasha, 6’5″ Lee, 6’9″ Kuzminskas, 7’3″ KP, 7′ Noah. That’s an interesting “switch anything” roster. I think Noah and Kp’s ability to switch onto smalls will be really important this year.

      Roster prediction:

      C: Noah, Willybilly, Plumlee
      PF: Kristaps, KOQ
      SF: Melo, Kuz, Thomas
      SG: Lee, Baker, Sasha, Holiday
      PG: Rose, Jennings, Randle

    4. I think the obvious answer is that Hornacek has been installing the offense he actually wants to run, as opposed to the triangle.

I actually think we’ve seen plenty of Triangle, but Hornacek has already tweaked it to create more pick and roll or pick and pop opportunities. The most obvious example is how when they form the strong side Triangle and swing the ball to the corner, the big in the strong side post and wing player on that side set a double ball screen for the player to come around and turn the corner into the middle of the floor.

Also I’ve noticed that the spacing on the weak side is more variable and that at times instead of having a player at the pinch post there, that player is spaced out beyond the arc on the wing. They’re also quite clearly getting down the floor faster and running more high screens early in the shot clock to trigger quick shot opportunities.

Unrelated, but so far what I’ve seen on his out of timeout plays has also been excellent.

    5. Plumlee is a lock guys. Randall is the odd man out, with Amundson.
I’m surprised that he isn’t already getting the Cole Aldridge treatment on this board. Put me down as a Plumlee guy.

    6. I really don’t like the idea of having 15 men on the roster just because we have 15 slots. I think we should trim the roster to 13 or 14 so we can bring up a D League guy with no problem. With that said, I have no problem cutting Plumlee along with Amundson, Tokoto, and N’Dour. I don’t believe any of those four guys have proven to be NBA level players. I like N’Dour a lot but he really doesn’t do much well. He might be hell to practice against though, so I can see his place as an inactive on our roster.

      – Joakim Noah had 7 rebounds and 4 assists in 14 minutes. Just awesome work right there.
      – I need more than 3 boards from KP.
      – Ron Baker, Courtney Lee, and Sasha Vujacic are the best guards on the team and project to be above average NBA guards this season.
      – Lance Thomas looked like shit this entire pre-season but he did that last year too. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt, but that version of Lance Thomas has no business getting minutes on an NBA roster. Kuz should take all of his minutes in the regular season.

    7. I’m hoping that we could cut Randle and then sign him for Westchester. Would Brooklyn grab him? That would really hurt.

    8. Seems like we have a lot more intelligence, hustle, and balance on this roster… Not to mention talent. I have a good feeling… 47 and 35. Cheese is an awesome knick name too.

    9. I’m going with a cool 53-29 this season. The Knicks big four of Noah, Porzingis, Ron Baker, and Hernangomez will power us to victory most nights.

Seriously though if Rose and Jennings don’t sabotage what we have, we could be pretty good.

    10. Knicks are 5th in preseason offensive rating, behind Rockets, Raptors, Warriors and Heat, all teams in the top 12 in offensive rating last year.

Maybe it’s a complete fluke, or maybe the Knicks might AT LEAST be better offensively this year.

They’re also in the top half in pace.

    11. It’s sort of hard to judge what we’ve seen on offense in the preseason when we’ve mainly been missing Rose who is potentially (and I say potentially because I do think there’s at least a chance that he fits in successfully) going to vacuum up a lot of touches and shots and not use them very efficiently while also really hurting the spacing when he doesn’t have the ball. Unless we get a new, more restrained Derrick Rose, he’s going to change the equation on offense a lot.

    12. just from watching a bit of the pre-season games…man, we look pretty young and athletic out there – i was a little worried that with horny’s up tempo play style we would gas by the 4th qtr…other than maybe lance – we look pretty fit getting up and down the court…

not a big KOQ fan – he always looks like he’s pressing/forcing things…maybe it’s just me (or the bit of “indulging” i usually do after work while watching games) – but i really like justin holiday’s game a lot…he’s active with a decent touch and seems to position himself well on the court…

so, if sasha ends up being our backup pg for an extended period of time – maybe that won’t be the end of the world for us…

offensively, my biggest concern will be our turnovers…to be honest – i haven’t really paid that close attention yet to what we have going on with our defense…

finally, although i grew up out on the island – i always thought of nyc being an international kind of place – it really makes me happy to see the we finally have a good group of young (exciting) international players – can’t hate on phil for that…

    13. We’ve been missing Rose AND Noah. Melo sat a game as well.

Plus, we played Boston with no starters and Brooklyn with no Lin and Washington with Wall playing his first post-surgery game.

      It’s really hard to judge.

I loved watching last night’s game though. The passing was beautiful.

    14. O’Quinn looked pretty good last night. I hope he carves out his niche this year. I like his toughness, he is a willing passer and a decent rebounder.

    15. Somebody help me out here. Rose played on an incredibly offensively challenged team with the Bulls, right? So he was ball dominant. He played on the Olympic team, and was a more traditional point guard. So, why would people think that Rose, coming to a team with Melo (whom he knows and respects) and Porzingas, attempt to be the same type of guard he was in Chicago?

    16. When KOQ makes quick decisions with the ball like he did yesterday he’s a valuable rotation big. He needs to bottle that up and bring it with him for all 82.

    17. Feels like he can only put it together for like 3 games a month.

Hopefully Noah’s mentorship isn’t only limited to KP.

    18. I was thinking about the rotations, I think Horny has a great deal of options with this team. Somewhere in the middle of the game he could go with a lineup of Rose, Jennings, Lee, Melo, and KP. I think this could be the most devastating offensive lineup, you could even swap out Rose/Jennings for Sasha. You have 4-5 shooters on the court who can all drive and kick, run pnr and so on. There are so many options!

    19. I wouldn’t mind seeing 2 PG sets with Sasha in the J Kidd/Prigs role, the other 3 players on the floor just really have to pick up the shooting load with Rose/Jennings on the floor.

    20. Rose, Jennings, Melo, Lee and KP seems like a good way to murder our star unicorn as he valiantly tries to defend the paint and every other spot on the floor. Why not just stick him in the Jets secondary for a few games?

    21. lol he defends the paint already, did you miss yesterday?

Also, Melo defending 4s is usually a break even or a plus. So is Lee defending 3s

    22. Rose Jennings shouldn’t be in a 2 PG lineup together because neither of them can shoot a basketball into the ocean and both are subpar on defense.

Rose/Sasha might be decent, though. Maybe even Rose/Baker or Sasha/Baker (is that really a 2 pg set?) off the bench…but we’re getting ahead of ourselves there.

    23. Rose Jennings shouldn’t be in a 2 PG lineup together because neither of them can shoot a basketball into the ocean and both are subpar on defense.

True, but if they are both constantly on the attack wouldn’t that be a good thing?

    24. @27. Do you really hate Phil? He was the Mountain Man for chrissakes! I’m assuming this hatred is because of the Bulls, right?

    25. This name was a holdover from the heady first days of the D-Rose trade fallout

    26. We have a lot of options everywhere but PG. How viable some of those options are remains to be seen, but Horny has some flexible pieces if he wants to tinker.

    27. 3 things i like A LOT till now from our pre season:
      -ultrafast-unselfish ball movement
      -TEAM spirit
      -High Energy

need to see better D tho to be fully pumped

    28. This team is very volatile, and I took the under on 35.5 wins (I think?) just about month and a half ago or so.

After seeing some of our new bench guys in preseason I’ll follow my small-sample size availability heuristic and take the over at 38-40 wins.

    29. To be honest, I think projecting win totals for the Knicks this year is pointless. Everything I have read has them anywhere from 35 wins to 50. To be honest I would be happy to play .500 ball all season and push for a low playoff seed. Those might be low goals, but after the last 2 years it will at least mean we will have a season of entertaining consistent basketball.

The start of the season is going to be important for us. If we can come out of the first 10 games with a winning record it could set us up nicely when we go on the inevitable 6 game losing streak at some point.

    30. I liked what I saw out of the Sasha/Ron backcourt yesterday. Two reasonably big and athletic guys with high motors and defensive chops who can handle well for 2-guards, pass and shoot. Sasha can definitely play PG in a lineup wth good ball-handlers, e.g. Sasha-Baker-Kuz-and two of KP, Noah or Melo. Lance and Willy can play in those lineups as well.

I haven’t seen a single numbers-backed projection that has the Knicks above .500. Would love to see the justification, there.

    32. That’s weak. Watching the team in Pre-season is not a number. The Eye test is still a thing(especially for predictions) as much as you hate it.

You talking to me? It has nothing to do with preseason. It has everything to do with the tens of thousands of minutes that the Knicks’ players have played before putting on the blue and orange.

Statistical projection is a thing (especially for predictions) as much as you hate it.

    34. Slightly off topic..
But, I am genuinely excited for Lin. I hope sets the league afire again with the Nets. I also hope Rose shows out in the games vs the Nets. Lin finally has the rock- officially, maybe he stays healthy and becomes the player we all thought he could be.

Nah I appreciate stats. These Knicks have never played together so there are no previous numbers to look at.

    36. Nah I appreciate stats. These Knicks have never played together so there are no previous numbers to look at.

Are there any usable stats in the NBA then? No team is the same year to year. Players may very but they don’t vary that much to the point where looking at stats from other teams is useless.

    37. Are there any usable stats in the NBA then? No team is the same year to year. Players may very but they don’t vary that much to the point where looking at stats from other teams is useless.

Don’t be dramatic. I’m talking about projecting a teams record. Roles may change, players may improve or whatever. I agree stats are useful….but my original response was to the comment by Jowles in #38.

Someone posted that they think the Knicks could go .500 and Jowles said there are no stats to back that. My point is that watching a new team play in preseason can give you an idea as to the possibilities

    38. I haven’t seen a single numbers-backed projection that has the Knicks above .500. Would love to see the justification, there.

Most of the ones I have read over .500 have been more OpEd. pieces rather than actual numbers based, so you can probably take them with a grain of salt.

    39. We finished the half with Baker at the point and made our last 6 shots I believe. He’s a god.

    40. I would like to see KUZ get some minutes with some of the starters like Willy, Baker, Ndour, and Plumlee has this preseason. Maybe Jeff will play him over Lance or Holiday this half.

    41. @57. Probably not college hoops fans. Ron was well coached and has had to play at an athletic disadvantage for…like, ever. Clearly the NBA is a whole different planet athlete-wise, but in the regular season, drifting around the 3pt line with minimal defense is becoming the norm, so with Ron being a shooter, he should be fine. Plus he’ll at least put forth an effort on d. …Noah looks like he’s trying to get in every possible rhythm for the season and I freaking love it.

    42. To me the big battle should be between Plumlee and Amundson. I like the kid but I think Lou gets the nod. I hope that I’m wrong.

Baker is good…really good. I think Phil found a gem. Sorry Randle. Tokomo needs to play in the D-League.

Porzingis is a brick wall on defense. Noah mad some really bad passes and some great passes in the first half. The chemistry is not quite there yet but the signs a good.

I adore Courtney Lee. His defense is solid and his jumper is sweet. But he’s more than a 3-and-D. He can handle the ball and pass too.

On the flip side, Jennings is flashy but sloppy. Vujacic might be more effective at this point.

    43. Melo’s D has been very bad at times. He switched with Lee for no reason and then left Foye open. Maybe the reason was he switched to provide help on Lopez but he still needs to get back to his man?the shooter.

    44. Why not just stick him in the Jets secondary for a few games?

PtMilo is ready for the regular season.

Add Walt to that inner cicrcle of things we all agree on.

And if the Knicks break 50 wins, I will fund the next KB bar night.

    45. Can O’Quinn actually be useful or is it just that they’re playing the Nets in a preseason game?

    46. Kyle “Sean P” O’Quinn is plenty useful. In short bursts. Twice a month. At home. Against the 76ers.

    47. Like who works with Jennings in the offseason and lets him get away with such poor lower body shooting mechanics?

    48. Lance Thomas has been terrible this preseason. I never thought his 2015 was sustainable. And now it seems like he isn’t getting off on the right foot.

    49. 72. Oh, don’t get me wrong. He plays for the Knicks and he’s a native. I love the guy. I’d buy him a beer. But for all the skills he has, he never puts it together for long stretches. A game or 3? Sure. 50 games? Nope.

    50. I didn’t see the first half. Was their any reason why KP ended up taking less shots than Noah?

    51. Lin looks like a pretty safe bet to lead the league in turnovers. Also, if Holiday can shoot at all he’s going to be a nice rotation player- very good defender and has made a bunch of surprisingly nice passes off of the dribble the last few games. Really nice back to back games from KOQ- of course he looked really good early last season too so…

    52. Was their any reason why KP ended up taking less shots than Noah?

Yeah. Noah was unstoppable. He dominated the 1st quarter for the Knicks. I think he had 8 out of the first 10 Knicks points. The Nets were playing off him and he took advantage.

    53. What torture it must be to be a Nets fan. “Best case” is you outperform expectations, win 30 games and the draft pick you give the Celtics ends up being maybe 10th 0r 11th.

And the worst case is you have the worst record in the NBA and Boston gets the #1 pick.

      #there is no process

    54. KOQ has played better lately. Not sold yet but he’s got my attention.

Kuz is poor on indiv D, esp vs size. Better at team D. I think he’ll figure it out enough to get a long rotation look..

    55. Kuz has to learn the NBA game. He also has a tendency to travel on a perimeter fake shot where he instead tries to drive.

    56. A second unit consisting of Jennings, Holiday, Lance, O’Quinn and Kuz should be an effective and interesting group to watch. NDour, WillyBilly, Sasha and Baker can be sprinkled in too.
