    1. can’t wait for tonight’s game, Rose or not.

Re: Noah – it’s fine that he took a stand on something, and with his foundation, he certainly has a long history of putting his money and time where his mouth is.

That said, it was just sort of a weird place to take a stand IMHO. It’s like being against what a corporation stands for, and showing that by boycotting the lunch at employee orientation. If I remember correctly, the reason Fisher started doing camp at West Point was because he thought the academy stood for selflessness, teamwork, and discipline — which no matter what the military does, it certainly does still stand for that. But whatever, talk about a mountain out of a mole hill.

    2. RE: the discussion about Miami team wins for this season — great point on Nate Duncan’s podcast the other day. Miami has talent with Dragic and Whiteside certainly, but with evil Machiavellian Riley there, their own first rounder in hand, and a ton of cap space in the summer of 2017, there is a pretty decent chance that unless they overperform early in the season, that Riley just shuts it down and tanks. They don’t have their 1st round pick in 2018 or 2021 (to PHX). This summer (and the supposedly great draft class) might be their last chance to get a young star in the draft for a while.

The tanking aspect of things definitely changes projected win totals IMHO. Brooklyn for example would likely tank and be a good bet to be <20 wins, but they have no reason to, so they'll probably win 24 games. Philly was a sure bet to tank the last few years, but with Colangelo there, it seems likely they'll at least try to win most of their games. etc.etc.

    3. I wouldn’t touch that Miami line. Spoelstra consistently gets more out of less than most coaches in the league and as long as Winslow, Richardson and Whiteside are healthy, Miami should be pretty good on defense. Offense will be an issue as outside of Dragic they don’t have guys that can create a whole lot. If Winslow makes a leap that would help. Their 4 position is a bit of a disaster.

34 seems like a good line, but I’d tend to favor the over.

    4. I heard a podcast interviewing Colangelo. It was weird for me. Colangelo is an accomplished GM, with a good track record, but I came away not liking him at all, and being very happy we have Jackson instead.

    5. “We interrupt this discussion of Derrick Rose’s rape case and Joakim Noah’s West Point dis to bring you a regularly scheduled NBA preseason game.”

      Thank the lord…..

    6. Seriously though. I need more discussion about shaming Noah’s pacifist principles like I need a bullet in my skull.

Is Mindy gonna play at the 2 tonight or is that just an idea Hornacek is floating?

    7. For the game tonight does anyone know is MSG broadcasting it? I looked on my TV schedule and it looked like MSG is showing a Rangers preseason game and ESPN is showing the Knicks preseason game. Honestly, I was hoping to hear Clyde comment, and maybe also do interviews. But I can’t find anything on MSG.

    8. I don’t know who will start at the 2, but I assume we will see several players there since Hornacek says that is one of the starting spots up for grabs.

The official schedule lists both MSG and ESPN. No idea if that’s accurate or not.

Really excited to watch some basketball again, even if it is bullshit preseason basketball. Who does everyone think will be the guy that we all dramatically overrate on the basis of preseason performance (2015 winner: Kyle O’Quinn)? Baker maybe? Should get plenty of burn with Rose unavailable.

    10. Preseason goals:

      1. Notice that KP has become the best player in the NBA in the offseason.

      2. Pray that Ron Baker can turn Lou’s guaranteed money into a special advisor fee

      3. Employ slow mo dvr tactics to determine whether Noah is Noah or is most of the way to Kurt Thomasville

      4. Marshall Plumlee personal foul drinking game

    11. I am pretty surprised that Rose didn’t settle, especially given the plaintiff seemed like she wanted to settle. Oh well. Now everyone has to deal with all this drama.

    12. First preseason game. Noah will not play due to hamstring injury.

Who gives 2 shits? I’d be perfectly happy if Noah and Rose only played every other preseason game.

    13. If Hornacek is really willing to play small like that all season and there aren’t major injury issues to the small ball players (and Thomas doesn’t turn back into a pumpkin), I could see the Knicks beating the over/under.

    14. Porzingis should be a nightmare for opposing centers on offense, but we’ll have to see how his defense holds up. He was much better defensively when paired with Rolo last year if I’m remembering correctly. It’s certainly worth trying that lineup though.

    15. I’m just not sure that KP is ready to be the main rebounder/rim defender. The O might be great, D might be pretty awful.

But it’d be fun to watch.

    16. That lineup is going to get run this year, but probably not as the starting unit. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the first substitution they make consistently.

    17. “I am pretty surprised that Rose didn’t settle,”
He still might. It is very common for settlement discussions to really go down to the wire, with both parties bluffing that they are perfectly willing to go to trial, until one or both of them blink. Often, cases will settle even after the trial has started. It would not surprise me at all if the lawyers actually go through the process of picking a jury and then settle the case right before opening statements.

    18. from Stefan Bondy (NYDN beat writer) — @SBondyNYDN: Kristaps Porzingis tells me he may have problem guarding big centers but, “I don’t back down to nobody.”

      I love this Kristaps.

    19. from Stefan Bondy (NYDN beat writer) — @SBondyNYDN: Kristaps Porzingis tells me he may have problem guarding big centers but, “I don’t back down to nobody.”

You think he knows that means he backs down to everybody? (-:

    20. That lineup is going to get run this year, but probably not as the starting unit. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the first substitution they make consistently.

Agree. Assuming the starting lineup is as we expect it to be, it would make sense to do an early substitution of Lance for Noah, play small for a few minutes, and then bring back Noah in some bench-heavy units where his offensive facilitation has more use than in the starting lineup.

If we’re going to play small a lot it will require some of the unproven bench guys to step up though. The key to playing small successfully is to have big, versatile wings since they need to provide an outsize share of rebounding and rim protection. We have Lance who fits that definition well (assuming he doesn’t turn back into a pumpkin), and Melo can do it as well. After that it’s really just N’Dour and Kuz who potentially fit the role and they’re both huge question marks.

    21. @25

You can even play “small” with Noah at the 5 as the only big. It may actually work better since he’s a far better defender and rebounder than KP at this point in their careers. Despite his lack of scoring prowess the balance might be better with the Noah small ball lineups.

So there’s a chance we’ll get a lot of small ball while still giving KP and Noah plenty of minutes.

After that it’s really just N’Dour and Kuz who potentially fit the role and they’re both huge question marks.

N’Dour’s the wild card for me. What he could be in theory is the perfect tweener forward to play small with next to Melo and KP with the ability he’s flashed in protecting the rim and switching onto perimeter players. The sample size here is miniscule and against much inferior quality, so it’ll be interesting to see how he progresses.

    22. I, for one, am more interested in seeing Jennings, Holiday, and the end of the bench youngins. Holiday is gonna get consistent minutes for pretty much the first time in his career. I only expect 1 of O’Quinn/Billy to get consistent minutes up front, so we could very well be looking at a second 5 with Thomas more of a stretch 4 and Cheese and Holiday as the main wings. I’m also interested in seeing what the defense looks like without Mike Longabardi in tow.

    23. I am so on board the Ndour train.

It’s so weird that his name is simply Ndour. It so looks like something that would have an apostrophe.

    24. I am so on board the Ndour train.

It’s so weird that his name is simply Ndour. It so looks like something that would have an apostrophe.

      Couldnt agree more

    25. Regardless of who starts I like Noah playing with the second unit some, as we can run a lot of offense through him. I think the rest of bench guys like cheese, holiday and lance can learn to cut off his post ups in the half court.

    26. It’s been so long I don’t even remember if there were dedicated preseason game threads

    27. I have stayed quiet and pretty much away for weeks and weeks. There has been no “basketball” talk. There’s been lots of talk about politics, Rose’s trial and other crap. I’m glad that there’s finally pro basketball to watch. It’s just preseason, but I feel like I’ve just crawled out of a desert and am seeing an oasis.

    28. Does Lee’s shot always look that herky-jerky? I don’t think I’ve ever actually watched him shoot a basketball.

    29. def more pick n roll than last year but a lot of mid range shots… and porzingis hardly touches the ball….

let’s hope this is not a theme for the year….

    30. It good to hear about how the Knicks are going to need time to learn the triangle every damn year.

    31. If the Knicks can’t play defense (and the first unit couldn’t), we have no shot this year.

Brandon Jennings is terrible. Hernangomez is actually the Spanish David Lee.

    32. “Knickerblogger – where fans go to overreact to one half of one game of preseason basketball”

    33. One game does not a season make, but remember the chatter about how bad the eFG% would be this year… then look at the eFG%.

    34. Mike D’Antoni is going to steal Westbrook’s MVP and put it squarely in the hands of James Harden.

    35. Um I thought this offense was going to be different this year. It looks exactly the same except we’re blowing more layups.

    36. @76 right …except that the Rockets are still ghastly defensively. So they won’t win much

    37. I’m hoping and praying that the Knicks have not yet started practicing pick and roll defense yet. That might explain things a bit…
      :-)

    38. No matter how good Joakim Noah is, if we can’t guard back court players or 3 point shooters we have no shot on defense.

    39. when noah is on the court… our defense will be fine…. i have no doubt about that…

      our offense… is another matter..

    40. Don’t overreact, don’t overreact, don’t overreact… *continues sobbing in corner

    41. Okay I’m certain our defense won’t be this bad because Kyle O’Quinn is a mess defensively.

      KP doing work though.

    42. Somebody tell KP 3 rebounds in 22 minutes ain’t gonna cut it, and while you’re at it tell Melo and D Rose that 19 points on 22 FGA ain’t gonna cut it either.

    43. Rose’s legs look good though. Once he gets on the same page with KP on the pick and pop that’s trouble

    44. Bold prediction:

Joakim Noah, Kristaps Porzingis, and Billy Buckets lead the Knicks in Wins Produced for the season.

    45. Harden, Anderson, Gordon & Mr. Pringles is going to be a formidable offense, at least until Anderson & Gordon get hurt.

    46. Clint Capela as the dive man isn’t a joke, either. Houston is a playoff team in the West.

    47. Well at least Kbloggers aren’t the only ones overreacting, Chauncey Billups and Jalen Rose both said the Knicks aren’t a playoff team.

    48. Lol. Ok so Ryan Anderson wasn’t guarded all game and Harden went off. That was really it. This means nothing. Rose looked good, lee hit open threes. Need to see the team with Noah. Houston is a bad team to play your first preseason game against.

They will make the playoffs because the west ain’t that strong after the top 3

    49. I’ve never disliked a guy so easy to root for as much as I dislike Lance Thomas. He just looks like he should have played defensive end or something.

    50. I don’t take anything from the preseason for the veterans. It’s pretty meaningless. It really only matters for the guys on the margins and the rookies. Great wins, terrible losses – it’s all meaningless.

    51. Jennings looks awful. 1/8 now.

While he has been terrible, it’s still all meaningless. It’s an exhibition. It would’t worry me (well, except I’m down on Jennings in general, but you know what I mean).

    52. Cheer up, everyone, our next game is against Brooklyn. We can even our critical preseason record at 1-1. And we’ll still be tied with every other team in the Eastern Conference for the #1 seed in the playoffs.

    53. Melo looked slow. Had no elevation. He’s declining fast and I really feel like he’s the peice that doesnt quite fit. Say what you want about Rose. I like the potential of the two man game with Him and KP. Especially if KP shoots 40% from 3 this yr. Rose penetrating. It’s like pick your poison.

Also KP and Billy look good out there together.

    54. @117, Melo had no lift at the beginning of last season either. He still put together a pretty decent season, bro.

    55. Melo looked slow. Had no elevation. He’s declining fast and I really feel like he’s the peice that doesnt quite fit.

********1st HOT TAKE OF THE YEAR!!!!!!******

    56. Decent is a good word. @124. We need him to have an all NBA Season. And he doesn’t seem capable of that anymore.

    57. Some guy pronounced the Greak Freak’s name like “YAHNIS ANTENENENOPO” the other night. It was glorious.

    58. Around the league, Mt. Whiteside had 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 23 minutes. And Buddy Hield is putting together a nice little preseason.

    59. @136 – basically all their draft picks the last 2 years…

I recognize Harrell, but I’m lost on these other guys (besides knowing Payton from his dad, of course). Oh shit, wait, is that Bobby Brown? From years ago? The other guys aren’t draft picks, are they?

    60. Melo looked slow. Had no elevation. He’s declining fast and I really feel like he’s the peice that doesnt quite fit.

If only KP were ready to play C full time. We’re stuck with “slower” Melo at the 3 when he’s so much better at the 4 at this point. Then again, Melo has never been considered quick. I think he’ll be fine if he can repeat last year’s numbers…but Rose really has to show up and make things less congested for Melo

    61. Jeff Van Gundy monologuing about sexual assault during this Knicks preseason game is surreal and awesome. Love you JVG.

    62. i’m gonna go out on a limb and say mindy might actually outplay lance thomas this year….

    63. Oh shit, wait, is that Bobby Brown? From years ago?

lol and he’s beginning to look more like the singer

    64. lol and he’s beginning to look more like the singer

Man, I remember debating whether the Knicks should give Brown a shot. That was, like, three years ago!

    65. Defense was fucking atrocious (caveat: against what is likely to be one of the 3-4 best offenses in the NBA). KP looked very good. That’s about all I got.

    66. Can we fast forward to when KP is the only guy from the current team still on the roster

    67. @142 Yes I Agree. Melo at the 4 is better option. But we know against certain teams KP cant play 5. Yes, Rose has to hit jump shots. But tonight he looked pretty good for first game action in 5 months.
