Game Thread: Knicks vs Mavs

The Knicks get the Mavericks on the 2nd night of a back-to-back, which is good news for the Kristapsbockers. The Mavericks won last night in DC and look like they are better than most believed they would be, and the Knicks are coming off a poor performance against the Bucks on Saturday.

Should be a fun game, and we get to see Kristaps guard his “mentor” Dirk Nowitzki for the first time! Enjoy the festivities folks, and go Knicks!!

  1. The Sixers brought in Jerry Colangelo as their new chairman of basketball operations, while insisting that Hinkie — and The Process — will remain in place. Several analysts have guessed that this is entirely about improving the team’s horrible relationship with player agents, but it’s still not usually good when your boss has to hire an intermediate boss above you in a newly-created position.

  2. Oh, and in other LOLNBA:

    @LAIreland 2m2 minutes ago
Larry Nance and Lou Williams will start for the Lakers tonight in Toronto. D’Angelo Russell and Julius Randle will come off of the bench.

I live in constant fear that we’ll return to being a joke the second James Dolan remembers that he owns a basketball team, but how nice it is to be abundantly mediocre, with promise ahead, rather than the Association’s easiest punchline.

  3. Looking forward to the game today (I will have to watch the replay latter tonight when I get home from work). That KP and Dirk potential match up is pretty juicy, but you would have to think ROLO gets Dirk.

Dallas have played above their means so far this year, so here’s hoping the good guys can at least be competitive tonight.

  4. @alsep73

That’s not a bad idea, Kobe will be Kobe which means that Randle will get to play most of his time when he can be the focal point of the offense.

  5. One of the nicest passes from Melo I have seen in a while, to RoLo….

Dirk is serving it red hot to Treetops…

  6. Can someone explain to me why we’re switching off Nowitzski so people he’s three to ten inches taller than are guarding him

  7. Can someone explain to me why we’re switching off Nowitzski so people he’s three to ten inches taller than are guarding him

    It’s Raymond Felton night

  8. @9 – it happened a couple of times. For some insane reason they decided to switch on defense. Porzingis was guarding Felton.

  9. I’ll say it again. The Knicks are bad to mediocre. Our personnel except for Porzingis really are bad. We need to trade all except KP, Gallo, and Grant and look to the future.

  10. Uh yeah, sure trade them all I’m sure Phils actually going to do that and I’m sure the game thread is the place to start a one-person conversation about it

That RoLo charge into lay up LOL

  11. Based on my gut we lead the NBA in moving screens by an enormous margin

we might, we’re 4th in offensive fouls per game and god knows we don’t commit any on the break because what’s a break

  12. Hopefully all the minutes Seraphin was getting were just an extended birthday present by Fisher

  13. If Felton scores more than 10 points and or doesn’t get elbowed in the face I’ll consider this game a loss even if we win by 30

  14. #16

I wouldn’t be against trading all except the young core. As far as I can see KP6 is the only dude who has positive differentials on our team.

  15. Jose Calderon figured out that he can drive on Deron Williams. There aren’t that many players that guard him that he can outrun.

  16. Wow, it took Carlisle to actually call the fucking time out for Fisher to make a damn change.

Had that lineup stayed on the floor it would have been smoked and the lead would have increased.

  17. What does one hope to accomplish while playing Derrick Williams, Lance Thomas, and Kevin Seraphin together?

  18. Javale McGee is in the NBA singularly because he won the genetic pool lottery. He’s a n awful awful basketball player. Simply amazing that he keeps getting signed

  19. What does one hope to accomplish while playing Derrick Williams, Lance Thomas, and Kevin Seraphin together?

    Lose?

  20. We are not a very good team. If we don’t admit it
we can never get better. That includes Fisher.

  21. Threesus Christ.

Gotta do a better job guarding against the 3’s. Dallas looking like they are still scorching following last night’s game at Washington.

  22. Does no one want to try to find KP on a curl or around mid ranging cutting to the basket? The starting offense has been satisfied to not create for other guys.

  23. Speaking of OKAFOR,
    anyone remember Emeka?
He used to be great as a rookie better than howard
then he is a average to above average player then he gets injured and
    now he is gone?

  24. I think the tech last game broke Jose and now he’s become angry Jose who incidentally is better at basketball

  25. Always been ambivalent on Melo, but 5 assists before the half (many to zinger) is pretty good

  26. Who can play defense? Gallo, KP, Thomas… that’s
about it. Melo can’t. Lopez just stands there with
    one arm half way up.

  27. A philly team with Melo

Last season was a “Philly team with Melo” and our record was garbage when he played.

The big difference is KP. He’s our best defender, rebounder, and second scorer.

  28. my favorite play of the half was the late Q2 fast break with felton speeding down the court and jose straining to keep pace, and in the background you have a ref jogging lightly down the court step for step with the ball

  29. I like that Dirk decided to teach KP6 a lesson in scoring.

Seems like wanted to go after the young buck to make a point.

  30. that 40 point spurs lead over philly is without kawhi, duncan & manu. boris diaw is +30 in 12 minutes which is hard to do in the olympics

  31. my favorite play of the half was the late Q2 fast break with felton speeding down the court and jose straining to keep pace, and in the background you have a ref jogging lightly down the court step for step with the ball

    -nailed

  32. shooting not withstanding this season is the best all around game melo has shown us, hell regain his mediocre efficiency, and this is not a knock on jose cause hes alread surpassed my expectations but if phil can magic us one league average playmaker this is a team no one wants to play

  33. It feels like it’s a much larger lead than it is.

One of those games where we just look completely hopeless but the score says they’re still in the game.

  34. also im sick of the espn dirk comps, latviathan is already outperforming dirks rookie campaign. and dirk doesnt have kps intensity or motor.

  35. We are completely hopeless. Just like our last game. We can however play well against Brooklyn and Philly!

  36. I have a feeling by the end of this week any delusions we had of the Knicks possibly making the playoffs will be put to rest.

  37. @86 Being compared to the league’s 6th leading scorer in history is not a bad thing… that being said, I agree with your sentiment, but Knicks fans should take it as a complement even though it is a misguided comparison.

I mean, you’re watching Dirk tonight. Nothing wrong with being like him.

  38. We are completely hopeless. Just like our last game. We can however play well against Brooklyn and Philly!

We could actually use a Ty Lawson type to give us life.

  39. also im sick of the espn dirk comps, latviathan is already outperforming dirks rookie campaign. and dirk doesnt have kps intensity or motor.

    – on the other side there is no guarantee that KP will exceed prime dirk.
    – Landry fields outplayed TMAC on his rookis year.

I will cheer for KP but I think the basis is not that good.

  40. Well, this game is pretty close to over already. No fun. Thought at least they would give Dallas a sweat at home with the Mavs playing the second night of a back-to-back.

    Argh.

  41. Carlisle really good at those crowd-killing time-outs. Any little sign of life and he snuffs the excitement out of the arena.

  42. We need a Dirk type franchise talent who will be an unselfish superstar.

I think KP can be that guy. Few teams have that luck to get one. Spurs had two consecutive types with The Admiral and Timmy.

  43. I mean Parsons dragged him out of bounds by the jersey lets out blame where blame is properly due and don’t let our negative opinion of Melo make you uncharitable

  44. melo and parsons is an unlikely fight. i figured they were doing a flash mob they’d planned via snapchat.

  45. >Gallo hits a 3
    >Our long national nightmare is over
    >Gallo front irons a 3
    >Our long national nightmare returns

  46. Didn’t see this run coming.

Nice way to finish this quarter, get it under 10 before the 4th and I’ll be quite content

  47. I mean Parsons dragged him out of bounds by the jersey lets out blame where blame is properly due and don’t let our negative opinion of Melo make you uncharitable

Very true. Its just that I’ve just seen lots of offensive and technical fouls come as a result of that.

  48. I imagine someday that Gallo is just gonna explode for 30 points with 10 3s after all this built up three point related frustration

  49. I know Seraphin’s number suck and he’s our favorite punching bag but I swear it seems everytime I look up from a thread here he’s blocking a shot, dropping an 18 ft turnaround or splashing a hook. I keep wanting him channel Anthony Mason’s spirit.

  50. I think we can start with the more aggressive fire Fisher threads. This Seraphin experiment needs to end.

  51. If we all focus our energy on Seraphin getting a season ending injury we might bring it into reality

Or so The Secret tells me

  52. We sometimes need games like these to remind us how we’re just a KP away from sucking like last season.

  53. I enjoyed the draft, summer league, preseason, the
first 18 games or so, but now I feel that the season
    is over.

  54. Carlisle is a good head coach. He knows how to manage that lineup by playing to the situation.

  55. I’m watching this game while putting Xmas ornaments on the tree… We opted for a real tree this year, first time ever… By “we” I mean my wife… She insisted … After some argument, it now sits in the corner of my living room.

The first ornament she picks up, glass, fragile, she crushes it in her hand… She fake cries a little … She’s lucky she’s not bleeding

We’ll call it ornament number #6 … She puts a big glass ball on a flimsy branch … It slides off… Crash. Shatters everywhere…. She’s not used to real branches. Fake trees hold better obviously. So now, some legitimate crying .. It was her first Radio City ornament … As far as I know, her only one…. Not THAT significant

3 minutes later…. CRASH… again… It’s a porcelain jackolantern ornament. My mom got it for me since I’m born on Halloween … She explodes. Hysterical. Runs upstairs, pouting and crying like a child …

    Knicks look great, eh?

  56. I think KP could pick and pop from 3 more

Dallas is packing the paint and Jose has little chance of threading a pass through a thicket of bigs

  57. Thomas doesn’t do stupid shit, which is more than a lot of players can say, but I still couldn’t really tell you what he’s out there to do

  58. This game is what the KP doubters feared. He can’t grab a board for anything. I wonder if the Mavs scouted something in his rebounding technique

  59. i haven’t watch many charlotte games yet but clifford must be doing something right to be 12-8 with that team and MKG out for the year

  60. When we drafted Shumpert a writer ( i am not sure if it is ISOLA)
Slammed the knicks as he said we should have drafted that big guy who plays like rodman who was drafted by the wizards.
    Is that Serafin?

  61. I want to know who put “go under all screens trust me it’ll be cool” in the Dallas scouting report

  62. @160 yeah they are a scrappy bunch. And Batum has been great. Along with Lin and Lamb on the bench

  63. @161 I believe that was Chris Singleton

Funny, I was just thinking about that dude earlier. Turns out he’s playing in Lithuania now

  64. Player TS% TRB% BLK% USG% WS/48 BPM VORP
    O’Quinn .530 16.6 4.6 18.3 .099 0.1 1.5
    Seraphin .510 12.5 3.7 20.6 .045 -3.9 -2.6

  65. I think it was more the fact that most of Dallas’ shots were going in coupled with Nowitski dragging KP out to the perimeter

  66. it probably doesn’t hurt that batum and marvin williams are both facing exploding cap contract years

  67. Well, well, well. Knicks won’t die.

Guessing Dirk is gonna come back in the game though. And the spacing he provides creates nightmares.

  68. Re: Charlotte everyone’s playing at or above expectations especially Jeremy Lamb who’s been really really good. Scott Brooks is a moron for not giving him playtime when he was in OKC

  69. Melo isn’t a guy to lead a team to a championship.

He loses his cool way too easily in tough moments.

  70. The offense went to shit the moment Melo decided to play hero ball and force 3 straight shots.

  71. So is the strategy just give the ball to Porzingis anytime he’s within 25 feet of the basket

  72. That sequence where PorzinGod was pushed going for the offensive rebound, ran the length of the court to contest an open 3, and then ran again to set up and drill a 3 point was impressive as fuck.

This kid works his ass off.

  73. At this point I will not criticize Melo if he just punched one of it not all 3 refs in the face.

  74. Melo has cost us this fucking game in just about every way imaginable down the stretch.

With that said, that blocking foul call was pure bullshit.

  75. Porzingis was 100% ready to do whatever it took to win us the game.

    Completely coldblooded.

  76. This kid is special.

Whatever it is that superstars have that make them special, PorzinGod has it.

  77. Pretty exciting finish. I wish the refs didn’t seem to be out to fuck us every single night….

  78. Honestly, maybe the Mavs just got a bit tired late. They still had some good looks but started missing.

  79. @215 I find your lack of faith in the Porzingod… disturbing

We better use the KP at the 5 smallball lineup going forward

If Fisher keeps tinkering with it I’ll shit my pants in anger

  80. If Melo was 6-12 that line would be pretty damn good. I wish he’d hurry up and get that shot back.

  81. The offense went to shit the moment Melo decided to play hero ball and force 3 straight shots.

Are you KPs brother? Serious question.

Melo had a rough go of it down the stretch. 3 questionable calls. He never gets the benefit of the doubt it’s quite amazing.

He didn’t play hero ball he tried to score and on the offensive foul he was trying to free KP.

  82. @215

I saw it as regression to the mean. They were hot as hell for the first half and couldn’t maintain it.

  83. Takeaway from this game is that KP should be our
    center.

This. I’ve been saying it for awhile. We need to establish him down low. If that means having KP play the 5 then so be it.

  84. It would be nice if Seraphin gets traded the day he is eligible. That would be the best thing ever.

  85. Are you KPs brother? Serious question.

What does my criticism of Melo’s game make me his brother?

If that were so KP would have millions of brothers and sisters.

  86. @221 it was a really weird game in the second half. I do think the Mavs ran out of steam.

When the Knicks cut the lead to 12 and then the Mavs had 2 straight layups to end the 3rd was the back breaker

  87. @225 is that a yes?

Every post is about KP and you are new. I’m asking that’s it. No need to get defensive.

  88. @226 al has gotten a great deal more Ignorant in his old age. It’s quite impressive. And I love it

  89. He didn’t play hero ball he tried to score and on the offensive foul he was trying to free KP.

He took three straight shots with 3:00 to go where he forced the ball off balance with defenders in his face and someone open calling for the ball. He predictably missed each of them.

  90. is that a yes?

I wish. I’d be rich watching the game at MSG right now.

Every post is about KP and you are new. I’m asking that’s it. No need to get defensive.

Well, in fairness, I spent a few criticizing Melo’s predictable gametime decisions and Fisher’s shitty decision-making.

Watch out though Sczerbiak is criticizing Melo now too. He must be another lost brother.

  91. @221 I think people here want Melo to be a ballhog because it fits a narrative. I think he’s perfectly fine with somebody else shooting the ball. I just think the officiating is really getting to him and I can’t blame him.

  92. @230 ok. You win. Except 1 was a non call, 1 was an offensive foul call and 1 was a WIDE open 3.

@231 I don’t care who criticizes Melo. I think he was bad too, I don’t know what you are arguing.

    I quit tho. Good night

  93. Melo sucked tonight, to the point that I was wondering if he was paid to throw the game. Offensive fouls, forced shots, ignoring wide-open teammates, turning the ball over…doing 10 smart things does not excuse doing 10 dumb things. I would love to see Fisher have some balls and bench him when he plays stupid, selfish ball like he has during the last 2 games.

  94. @234 I agree the turnovers negated the good assist numbers. And there was dumb play all around from him.

  95. I thought he passed pretty well. Some wires definitely got crossed at the end though.

This isn’t Melos team anymore and I think it could be a real issue sooner rather than later.

  96. I didn’t even criticize Melo’s shot selection much until the final 3 minutes when we were rallying by spreading the ball and getting open looks. He can’t kill runs like that by holding onto the ball and forcing shots. We had a rhythm going.

  97. That offensive foul hug they called on Melo was bullshit. Guys do that all the time at the end of games.

  98. The Zingularity was evolving before our eyes again, gaining strength, tearing at the fabric of reality, bending it to his will. That, at least, was fun. One day when he rules the galaxy… he’ll wave his hands and transform late game deficits into glorious victories.

The Knicks lost because they let Dallas have 236 wide open 3s in the first half. Making it closer at the end wasn’t a moral victory, but I’m glad they didn’t give up after being down 20+ for much of the 2nd half.

  99. We shot better than we have been recently and we shared the ball pretty well (yes, including Melo with his 8 assists). Dirk pulling KP out to the line killed his rebounding but he still had a great game and we rebounded sort of okay overall. We were shit defending the 3 but the Mavs will do that to you sometimes. The biggest problem is the fouls as it has been since the start of the season. They took 20 FTs to our 9 with a 9 point differential in a 7 point loss. Part of that is just that the roster isn’t chock full of great defenders but they’ve been trying hard thus fouling a lot more (e.g. Calderon, J.) but it is fucking killing us. It’s not always the amount of fouls either it’s the nature of them. If memory serves at the half we hadn’t committed much more in the way of fouls than the Mavs but they’d shot 2 or 3 times as many FTs. Part of it is bad calls but that’s been so consistent recently that I’m concerned that we’ve developed a reputation for hacking and slashing that is going to keep following us around resulting in more and more turnovers and FTAs. Makes me think we need to back off on the D for a few games and play super clean just to get the refs to lay the fuck off down the road.

  100. Gotta give you credit Ras, I told you to stop being uncharitable (and I was right at the time), and then you predicted that Melo would implode, which he did.

He had a poor game and his play at the end of games is legitimately horrible.

  101. Probably not really in a position to comment as I only managed to see the last quarter, but I feel that if the team get 20 down to a pretty decent team like Dallas, that’s pretty tough to blame all on Melo. I don’t want to be a Melo apologist, but it kind of feels like he’s being scapegoated on this one here. Yeah there were some mistakes and he definitely had a pretty average game, so there could be a little blame apportioned to him considering he’s a leader. He’s been getting a bit of a bum steer from the ref’s lately so I can understand why he is getting frustrated.

Makes me think we need to back off on the D for a few games and play super clean just to get the refs to lay the fuck off down the road.

What has killed us is the non calls when we are on offence. End of the day you make your own luck with the officiating by playing well. Interesting hypothesis though.

  102. Over the years, I’ve written more positive than negative posts about Melo. I truly try to call ’em as I see ’em. I may be a lot of things, but am certainly not pro- or anti-Melo. It just seems like he can’t help himself from trying to force things.

Frankly, I don’t care about the reason he gets calls or doesn’t. Smart players adjust to the way the game is being called. Time and time again, Melo demonstrates that he is incapable of adjusting to game situations, including refereeing. When he’s getting the calls, or when he’s locked in, he’s spectacular. When he’s not, he plays dumb basketball more often than not. It’s very frustrating to watch.

I don’t mind when we lose because we miss good shots or make good decisions that just don’t pan out for whatever reason. I hate when we lose because of dumb, selfish decision-making by the guy who is supposed to be the team’s best player.

That’s on the coach and GM too. Melo is now past the point where he can run a coach, player or GM out of town. He has to be held accountable.

  103. 97: landry fields was forth all time in win shares for a rookie, landry had ten double doubles in his first 20 games??

  104. the funny thing is one day when kp is on a team devoid of talent like melis been the trolls will kill him too. that being said they need to run through kp and let melo be olympic melo, spot up scorer and playmaker, hes the best 2nd banana in the game nothing wrong with that, kp is the alpha(westbrook and durant are twin alphas(
