Game Thread and Preview: Knicks @ Wizards

The folks at the excellent Wizards blog truthaboutit.net asked me to offer a few words about the Knicks in advance of the matchup in D.C. tonight.

I talk about the trade, Phil Jackson’s hat choices, 2015 free agents (Jeremy Lin!), developing the young Knicks, and whether Melo should shut it down.

  1. One last time…

    Shump Shump!

A little bit of me just died inside, but it had to be done. Seeing what Mozgov just netted, I’m disappointed we couldn’t get more out of him other than being able to dump JR. Good strategy, but poor tactics.

  2. I think it’s a bit redundant and very easy to say we should have got more for Shump when teams overpay for players of perceived lesser or similar quality. Cleveland are desperate for a rim protector, and made that obvious by offering a nice package of picks for Mozgov. I think the sentiment that has been kicking around that whilst we maybe could have got more for Shump, he may have also been overvalued as well is pretty spot on even though I wanted so bad for Shump to work for us.

I’m at work, so won’t get a chance to watch the game live (yay?). Is Galloway suiting up? If so it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table, although first pro game for a D-Leaguer with little practice under his belt it’s probably safe to say he’ll see garbage minuets to start off.

It is easy to say it, I’ll give you that. ;)

It looks like he will! This should be fun, at least.

  4. Welcome to the team Langston. Do you want to guard the best player in the NBA or John Wall?

  5. Thomas B. is named Dion? I don’t know who to believe anymore

Yeah, Thomas is a nick name I used when I started here at KB to keep my boss from knowing how often I was posting at work.

  6. Mozgov netted Denver 2 more first round picks? The “Melo” Trade, the gift that keeps on giving…..to Denver!

  7. I like Acy.

Me too. I hope he remains underrated so we can keep him at a reasonable price. I think he may still have some upside too.

  8. JR Smith picking up in Cleveland right where he left off. When asked about not knowing their offense yet he replied, “when in doubt, shoot.” I love JR Smith…

    …when he’s on another team.

  9. Did Cole really just ask out of the game?

He knows that the only chance of truly tanking is for him to be replaced with the pathetic player that is Jason Smith.

  10. Langston Galloway – sounds like a character in a bad soap opera. He should fit right in here!

  11. Can someone please teach Jason Smith that when other Knicks take shots, he has to look for the offensive board? The guy can’t just look for that mid-range jumper!

Whatever happens going forward, the coaching staff needs to whip these players into shape. I know that I wouldn’t tolerate that as a coach.

  12. I got a feeling Prigs is going to snap and fight someone one of these nights.

Melo speaking pure gibberish about his knee

  13. Melo speaking pure gibberish about his knee

Every time Melo speaks about anything it’s peppered with gibberish.

  14. Did Cole really just ask out of the game?

Cole’s hitting the “rookie wall”. I mean, this is kind of like his rookie season. But then again, don’t rookies even last longer than Cole has so far?

  15. I laughed out loud in the middle of my kid’s violin lesson when I read DRED’s question to Galloway in comment #5.

  16. I have a hard time believing there isn’t a playoff team that could use Prigioni. God I love watching the old man play…

  17. Camby was winded and asked out of a game once during his first year as a Knick. Van Gundy didn’t put him back into a game for a week. (Winning culture?)

  18. It does make you think that the rumors about Cole not practicing hard are true- the Knicks play the slowest pace in the league and he’s asking out after 7 minutes gone in the first quarter? That’s inexcusable though pretty low on the list of inexcusable things about the Knicks this year.

  19. If only Phil cared about developing young players. This lineup of Galloway, Larkin, THJ, Early, Cole to finish the game is just the same old Knicks retreads.

In all seriousness this last 5 minutes was the most fun I had watching this team all year.

  20. Have we already played the Nuggets in Denver? If not, better plan to have the whole medical staff there to look after Cole. Could you imagine Cole a couple of years ago playing in altitude against one of the highest paced offenses?

  21. Cole pulling the chair on himself following his hook shot into the stanchion is some serious performance art. Meanwhile, in basketball land, Milsap and Horford are 2-16 yet the Hawks lead the Griz by 10 in the second half. They are 26-8!

  22. These scrubs have given DC a decent show tonight. Best I can say now is a) it hurts less and less to watch the losses pile up each night, b) it’s kinda fun to watch these young guns get some real NBA floor time, and c) suffering thru this season and last will make any future success all that more sweet. Go Knickertankers!

  23. I mean, the full strength Knicks could lose to the wizards by 10 or so, but it wouldn’t be this funny

  24. It is strange that Derrick Rose and Kemba Walker are currently roughly the same player, and that player is a slightly worse version of Monta Ellis.

  25. I’m worried Cole may go Larry Sanders on us, believe all this huffing and puffing isn’t worth it and quit to chop lumber for the rest of his life.

  26. I’m worried Cole may go Larry Sanders on us, believe all this huffing and puffing isn’t worth it and quit to chop lumber for the rest of his life.

I have to say that that’s part of my antipathy towards Cole- he’s finally getting a shot to play real minutes and he really doesn’t seem to care all that much. He plays hard enough but has never seemed particularly passionate about the game to me. Of course it’s hard to get too passionate when you’re losing every night but a little more fire and desire would be nice.

  27. Kyle Korver is the incredibly rare player who has gone from good to great well into his 30s. Korver has become a pretty good, usually smart, always hustling defender. He is a wing with a TS% over .700 playing 33 mpg and 2nd in the league in made 3s. We’re shy of halfway through, but that’s a historically unmatched performance.

  28. Any first impressions of Galloway? Any rumors about who will fill the extra roster spots?

  29. Korver can thank Thibs who wouldn’t play him until he started really competing on defense- he was soft in both Philly and Utah but definitely picked up his game in Chicago.

Galloway looked like a d-leaguer making the jump to the NBA- took a couple of rushed threes that were really ugly, missed a couple at the rim as well. Looked fine on defense- he and Larkin could be a really pesky paring on that end. The one shot he took that looked totally in rhythm was a corner three off of a kick-out and he nailed that so hopefully the poor shooting was more nerves than anything.

  30. I just saw the interview with Carmelo (because my DVR was behind the real game) It was hard to understand what he meant at first, but then it sank in. He was saying that Phil had told him there would be a new organization and system and such and that now that new stuff was actually here and we would now see what it turned into. He’s right, it is a fresh start for the Knicks with all new young guys, cap space and a high draft pick and he was saying now we will see what happens.

I hope I’m not being as incoherent as he was expressing this.

  31. We need another big cause Cole gonna die.

Galloway didn’t play much. Looked like a raw rookie, but he can definitely be disruptive defensively. Got really long arms and he seems athletic enough.

  32. From ESPN:

The current Knicks starting 5 has combined win shares of 4.2. Coming into Wednesday, there are 11 players that have higher win shares than the Knicks starting 5 combined. [-]

Knicks Starting 5 Win Shares – Wednesday
    Pablo Prigioni 1.2
    Quincy Acy 1.1
    Cole Aldrich 0.9
    José Calderón 0.7
    Tim Hardaway Jr. 0.3

*All players combined equal to 4.2 win shares

  33. It does make you think that the rumors about Cole not practicing hard are true- the Knicks play the slowest pace in the league and he’s asking out after 7 minutes gone in the first quarter? That’s inexcusable though pretty low on the list of inexcusable things about the Knicks this year.

I’m not going to find the link, but back in the summer Phil Jackson was asked to discuss players. When he talked about Cole he pigeon-holed him as the end-of-the-bench, garbage-time fill in. His words were not inspiring. This is a kid that has potential, if someone decides to coach him up.

  34. I’m mean Cole has no muscle definition, seems a bit fat, and looks like he’s gonna die after 4 minutes of game time. And he’s competing against the most athletic 6’10″+ men in the world. And doing okay!

  35. I could swear there was a time when picking TH2 ahead of Rudy Gobert didn’t at all seem like a disaster. Like maybe a month or two ago? Quaint.

  36. Honestly, if I’m Cole I’m doing all the PEDs. All of them. Then I’m getting paid.

Seriously. Maybe he ought to take a peek in Amar’e’s locker while he’s out.

  37. I had to go back and check my math, but over the last 5 games Derrick Rose is 23-90 from the field, 28%.

That’s some serious brickage right there.

  38. Bofo line from Monroe 27 18 and 6

    11/16 fg 5/5ft

Okafor, Monroe Melo front court? With Cole on bench?

  39. Found it
7 yrs or less = 25% of cap
    7-9 = 30%
    >10 =35%

So that number sounds right for Monroe.

    66 x .25 = 16.5 mil

They may have the cap projections a little lower

  40. I would do terrible things for draymond green if this team had a hope of contending in the next few years

  41. Okafor, Monroe Melo front court?

    Calderon, _____, Melo, Monroe, Okafor.

Who do you expect to play defense?

  42. Anything over $10M for Monroe is too risky and he will get more than $10M. Also, wouldn’t Okfor and Monroe be kind or redundant?

  43. #91 I agree on 10 to 12 mil. And I dont think it’s redundant. Monroe has a midrange game that should make a rookie year easier for Okafor. And both could play 5 with Melo at 4 at times.

    #90 Jimmy Butler hahahaha

  44. If we go after Monroe it makes no sense to draft Okafor/Towns and pair them with Melo. Melo at the 3 just doesn’t work in the current NBA without a legitimate stretch-4 (not for spacing issues – Melo can shoot the ball – , but because Melo is so much more effective starting from the block).

Also, any concern about defense would be justified.

Note: I’m not suggesting we draft Mudiay (god forbid! Mudiay could be a good player but I see his ceiling as a poor man’s Starbury or a Brandon Jennings, which is not that bad but not what you want from a foundational piece); I’m suggesting we focus on other things than “scoring potential”, in making our pick and in chasing free agents. Gasol, Okafor and Melo would be good. But Gasol ain’t coming here (nor Butler, nor Leonard).

  45. Isn’t it ironic that Philly is trying to stink as bad as it can, and for two years in a row is out-tanked by a team who started the season thinking it would go to the playoffs?

  46. If Phil Jax is the Braintrust he is touted to be, the 2015 Knicks starting lineup will most likely be:
    Reggie Jackson, PG
    THJr, SG
    Wes Matthews, SF
    Paul Milsap, PF
    J. Okafor, C
And jettison ISO Melo for Player & picks !!!!!
That will truly be the birth of a Knicks Team !
