I’d like this team to be competitive for the rest of Brunson’s tenure (and beyond) and it’s GOING to require hard choices along the way.

No doubt about that, but how many years is Brunson going to be a top guard? Keeping this team for a couple of years was a no-brainer to me. Our players are not 25 years old, they are 29-30. Their moment is now. Give them a couple chances at a repeat, then tear down the team (and maybe keep Brunson to be the mentor for a young and upcoming player). I find this absolutely befuddling.

I'm going to apologize in advance for my own salary cap/apron ignorance. Okay, now that I have that out of the way...

Would it have been possible to have selected Tarris Reed at 24, and then also use the TP-MLE to sign Kevon Looney? I know it's water under the bridge because that did not happen, but I'm wondering if that was a possibility given our unwillingness to act like a big market team.

FWIW, I don't believe for a second that Dolan is doing this to screw Knicks fans. I think he wants to win more championships as much as any of us, maybe more.

What I DO think is that he truly believes that avoiding the second apron at all costs is the best way to do it. He chose the word "suicidal" for a reason.

Now that reason may be extremely ignorant, and he is a very ignorant man. No doubt about it. I feel confident that if Leon and Wes, and possibly Brunson or Brown, explained to Dolan that it was logical to go over the apron, he would likely have just overruled them because of that narcissistic belief in his own reasoning, just like Trump often ignores his advisors no matter what they say. Those two are cut from the same cloth.

But I do think that this decision opens up possibilities that would not be open if we signed Mitch to this deal. We can agree to disagree on this, but no matter...it is what it is.

Hubs,

We've drafted plenty of players in the 2nd round. I get punting the first round pick bc it's guaranteed. But there was literally no reason not to draft a center with that first pick in round 2. It's not guaranteed. Even assuming we were going to bring back Mitch AND Huk, getting another center made sense because Huk was far from a sure thing and you could probably snag someone there who is already better than Huk.

Honestly, this sucks. But outside of hte SA, this is a lot of money for Mitch and he's going to start or at least play a lot more minutes for Boston. so not sure we were ready to commit to that knowing all of his warts better than anyone else.

Well Z-Man, why not weigh in? Do you think I'm wrong and this was actually a calculated decision from the front office? If so, why do you think literally all of the beat reporters have blown it on what amounts to a pretty god damn crucial detail?

Because mind you, I am not saying the front office won't find a way to salvage the situation. Matter of fact I said I had confidence they could! I am simply saying I believe what the reporters have said and what the fact pattern indicates: James Dolan very, very recently imposed a restriction that is nothing but bad for basketball purposes.

I think you answering these questions would lead to a healthier discussion than me pulling up the Bargnani thread or some of your KAT takes in response. I guess I'm getting soft in my old age.

I'm quite sad about Mitch leaving (and pissed that it's the Celtics) but y'all need to take a pill.

First, it's not irrational to want to avoid the second apron for team-building reasons (rather than "being a cheap-ass billionaire" like so many want to assume). I'd like this team to be competitive for the rest of Brunson's tenure (and beyond) and it's GOING to require hard choices along the way. Paying our top 5 what we pay them makes it hard to fill out the roster, and it's only going to get worse once JB gets extended for the max.

Also, there's reason to be concerned with overpaying a guy who has Mitch's injury history and was occasionally unplayable during the playoffs (not forgetting the great work he did in limited minutes).

This FO has found diamonds in the rough over and over again; they're far from flawless but I do believe they will figure it out.

Also, we just won the championship FFS. It's all gravy.
